It might seem like something out of Star Trek, but people controlling so-called ‘smartbrains' with their own thoughts could happen sooner than you think. And it doesn't stop there. Innovations in biomedical technologies is speeding the progress of things such as artificial lab-grown organs, nanorobots inside the body, or computers hardwired to the brain which is becoming common in the next 20 years. On UNSW's Engineering the Future podcast, Associate Professor Mohit Shivdasani and Claire Bridges talk to STEM journalist Neil Martin, about how the science-fiction of bionic humans is now rapidly becoming a reality. Behind The Veil: Along Comes Merri!Technology is moving fast! The days of scratching out a floorplan on paper is a thing of the past! Merri is the next level of 3D design platforms that leave nothing to the imagination. Our guest this week: Randi BushellRandi Bushell is the Founder & CEO of Merri, a 3D visualization platform for the events industry–bringing venues, planners, and vendors onto a single platform to design and execute best-in-class events. Prior to starting Merri, she spent her early career in Ecommerce at Macys.com and Walmart.com. While planning her wedding in 2018 she struggled to make design decisions without adequate tooling to visualize the event, which acted as the catalyst for starting Merri, and has now grown to be one of the fastest growing platforms in the industry. She did not want to be an entrepreneur! She was happy with her career and job – but she just couldn't let go of this idea. Within 5 months, the idea went from a drawing on a cocktail napkin to full fledge usable program. Date of Lecture: 18 October 2022 About the Lecture: How do you weigh a tree, let alone a forest? The recent increased focus on trees as tools in the fight against climate change, and the subsequent rush to see who can plant the most trees, assumes that we know how much carbon trees store (and how that can change). But do we? Our current understanding relies on very simplistic models and assumptions that are rarely if ever tested, in part due to the lack of detailed 3D measurements of trees. Mat will show how new 3D measurements of tree size and shape are challenging some of these assumptions, with major implications understanding how forests function. He will also show how these measurements are helping to address fundamental ecological questions about the size and shape of trees, how forests respond to environmental change, and how we can monitor forests more effectively from the ground, air and space. About the Speaker: Professor Mat Disney , Professor of Remote Sensing at UCL Department of Geography

Archaeologists have been 3D scanning artifacts for a while now. But, what do you do with those scans? We post them on websites, use them in reports, and try to do some analysis, but, it's not consistent. This new paper from PLOS ONE is from the architects of a new software, Artifact 3D, that intends to take those scans and perform some high-level, detailed, analytical algorithms that are consistent and repeatable. We talk about it on this week's episode. Interested in learning about how to use X-Rays and similar technology in archaeology? Check out the linked PaleoImaging course from James Elliot! In my early career, most of my projects are from CG Architect. CG Architect is a platform where we artists can meet with our potential customers, this was the only way I knew at that time to get a job. This led me to keep joining the visualization pro of the week. And from there, I learn a lot while building my journey to become Professional 3D Artist. And here are three lesson you should learn as a new 3d artist.
On this Additive Insight Editorial Roundtable, TCT's Head of Content Laura Griffiths and Senior Content Producer Sam Davies discuss the biggest 3D printing and additive manufacturing news from the last month. We kick things off with Markforged and perhaps the most organised Formnext announcement to date with a teaser for a new composite 3D printer that's been described by CEO Shai Terem as a "beast of a machine". Prepare to get your mind blown. By now you should be aware that when I say something is amazing it's going to be. When I say I've discovered something about the Moon then you know you better pay attention because it's big. This discovery is HUGE. In the Past In the past I discovered the Moon was Flat, I discovered that the Moon has a Firmament Around it - or at least it used too, it's all broken up now. I discovered that the Moon and the Sun were being simulated by very advanced technologies. Together we then studied the moon simulator and the sun simulator until we all fully understood it. I then discovered that the Moon was a hologram and my HUGE discovery tonight goes right along with it. You're going to love this. Please be prepared that brain matter may drip from your ear whenever your brain explodes. Please know you have been warned. The discovery tonight is going to move our future research along in amazing directions and it's going to do so with increased speed and accuracy. I'm so excited to see what sort of new doors in our research of the Moon this new discovery can open. I want everyone to attend the live show here on YouTube tonight and help us discuss the possibilities of what more we can do with this. I have no problem doing all the work on the research but this is when I pitch it to all of you to get your opinion on what we can then do with that new knowledge. The comment section of YouTube and the Live Chat of the Live Shows never fails.

Patients typically wait for transplants for months, even years, sometimes dying before receiving them. But now there are companies combating the life-threatening organ shortage with 3D printing. The process is called "Bioprinting" and it uses human tissue cells as “ink”. It actually isn't a new idea. 3D printers can already make human skin and even retinas. But the method has been limited to small, thin tissues that lack blood vessels. New 3D printing technologies could soon change that. The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine is creating artificial ears. A hydrogel scaffold is printed and then covered in skin and cartilage cells. These cells propagate, forming an ear-like structure. The original scaffold biodegrades, leaving the newly formed ear behind. By using the patient’s own cells, the organ has less chance of rejection once transplanted. United Therapeutics in New Hampshire is using a similar method to create lungs. A collagen infrastructure is 3D printed and then impregnated with human cells to animate it. The process, called "recellularization" is still in its early stages and not without challenges. The more complex an organ, the more difficult the task. Organs may someday be manufactured in large numbers, not only solving the organ shortage, but also reshaping our life spans. Imagine getting a new heart and lungs when your original ones give out. The future possibilities are exciting, though much further research and testing are still needed. While printing a 3D brain is a long way off, Sharon Presnell—chief scientist of Organovo whose company is 3D printing thin sheets of liver—says, “We all think it’s going to be possible at some point in the future. Where we differ, is on how long it will take.” *Hungry for more of the Good Stuff? Pushing the limit of 3D printing and trying new 3D Printing Filament – Matthew Gorton– Ep32 Matthew Gorton is Mechanical Engineer who has transitioned from employee to entrepreneur. For many years, he worked at WL Gore, in both Arizona and Delaware. (WL Gore is best known for the Gore-Tex Brand). As an aside, I also worked there as a summer intern in 2006. Matt has since left that job to pursue his passion of 3D printing as a full time career. His business is PrintedSolid, which is both an online and brick and motor 3D printer retailer. He sells many desktop 3D printers and materials, mostly the ColorFabb brand. We discuss his transition into entrepreneurship. Then we get into a lot of 3D printing details and details on new materials for 3D printing. We also discuss a new metal desktop 3D printer. Key Takeaways Matt followed his dreams through and the business is succeeding. Don't doubt yourself when you want to pursue your passions. While we discussed many aspects of 3D printing, one of my big takeaways is how many different materials there are and that I need to experiment with more materials like he is doing. Diplomacy, Defence and Development are the 3D's of Canada's new foreign policy announced by the Prime Minister last year. These, together with Commerce, are the cornerstones of the strategy designed to enhance our position in the world. The Responsibility to Protect, which has been a Canadian initiative from the outset, is the most far-reaching agreement on the prevention of mass killing since the UN Genocide Convention was established in 1948. It seeks to ensure that the protection of civilians takes precedence over national sovereignty. It is one of the most important outcomes of the World Summit held at the United Nations last September. But will these new initiatives help prevent another Rwanda? According to UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, large-scale attacks against civilians continue in Dafur in Western Sudan. “Women and girls are being raped by armed groups, yet more villages are being burned, and thousands more are being driven from their homes”, he said in December. And in Afghanistan, with Canada's military presence on the increase, are there clear and achievable political and military objectives? Is there an exit strategy? Speaker: Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire Gen. Dallaire joined the Canadian Army in 1964. After graduating with a B.Sc. from the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario, he held various command, staff and training appointments in Canada and Germany. In 1993, he took command of the United Nations Observer Mission – Uganda and Rwanda and later, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross for this mission. On his return from Rwanda, he served as commander of the 1st Canadian Division and Deputy Commander of the Canadian Army. Promoted to three-star general, he was appointed to various senior positions including Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources – Military) in the Ministry of Defence. Gen. Dallaire retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in April 2000. He serves as a special adviser to the Canadian government on war-affected children and the prohibition of small-arms distribution. He is currently a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Gen. Dallaire was awarded the Order of Canada in 2002. His internationally acclaimed book “Shake Hands With the Devil – The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda” won the Governor General's Literary Award for Non-Fiction in 2004. Gen.
