This week we bring 3 great conversation from the great Cal-Lab Association meeting that happened in February during Lab Day Chicago. First up is someone that has to put up with Elvis on a regular basis at Derby Dental Lab (https://www.derbydental.com/), Liam Johns. Liam talks about growing up with a technician father, becoming the removable manager at a young age, and how digital excites him for the future of dental technology. Then we chat with two gentlemen from Wiand Dental Lab (https://www.wiandlab.com/), Tom Wiand and Scott Lowrey. Tom tells the story of starting the lab in the early 90s, organically growing through the years, and keeping up with technology. Scott talks about going from selling burs to selling restorations 10 years ago. Now he does education, chairside support, and helps the lab succeed. We wrap up the episode with former player for the Pittsburg Steelers, Matt Cushing. Once done, a buddy asked if he would do sales for his lab. Not knowing anything about teeth, it wasn't long before Matt found a passion for the industry and opened First Choice Dental Lab (https://www.firstchoicelab.com/) and is now (17 years later) a lab that has acquired other labs, grew to full service, and has a satellite lab in another state. Don't miss this incredible webinar with Tanya Little, a dentist from beautiful Vancouver, Canada. We would like to invite you to a special webinar that she's hosting with Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) and LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) on Wednesday, May 7th, titled "Reflections from a Denturist: 20 Years of Crafting Dentures!". In this program, she will review the incredible history of removables with Ivoclar and focus on the new and exciting evolution based print resin and of course, the PM7. Her goal is to provide you with several key takeaways that will allow you to work smarter and not harder. You can join on May 7th by registering at https://lmtmag.com/webinars/reflections-from-a-denturist-20-years-of-crafting-dentures Are you a dental lab in need of more talent to improve your bottom line and keep production on schedule? Are you a dental tech with great skills but feel you're being limited at your current lab? Well, the answer is here and this is precisely why WIN WIN GO (https://www.winwingo.com/) was created. The dental lab and dental tech community needed a place where labs and technicians can meet, talk about their needs and connect in ways that foster a win win outcome. As a tech. If you're ready to make a change, thinking about moving in the next year or just curious what's out there, sign up today. It's totally free. As a lab, you might be feeling the frustration of paying the big employment site so much and getting so few tech candidates. We understand they don't much care about our industry. WINWINGO.com is simply the best place for lab techs and lab owners to actively engage in creating their ideal future. WINWINGO.com, how dental techs find paradise. Special Guests: Matt Cushing, Liam Johns, Scott Lowrey , and Tom Wiand CDT.
► Save 30% with Code: WGAN30REG at www.3DISE.com --- The Future of 3D Spatial Innovation Eric Marquette Just looking at the lineup for 3DISE Conference 2025, it's like a who's who of the spatial tech world. I mean, over thirty top speakers, covering everything from digital twins to AI-powered photogrammetry? It's kind of mind-blowing. Dan Smigrod Absolutely. This is, without a doubt, one of the most intensive conferences for professionals in our field. Digital twins, for example, are going far beyond architecture now. They're being used in urban planning, industrial plants, even entertainment. It's—it's fascinating how the technology keeps expanding its reach. Eric Marquette Right. And I love the phrase 'information tsunami' they used to describe the event. Like, think about that session on "A.I. and Photogrammetry." That intersection is where things are getting super innovative. Dan Smigrod A.I.'s application to photogrammetry, it's really remarkable. Just imagine the speed and detail improvement in processing 3D models. We're talking tasks that used to take days, or weeks, now done in hours. And these models aren't just static—A.I. allows them to be predictive. Eric Marquette That's it. Predictive modeling! And, people always think of this stuff as being only for massive projects. But it's trickling down. Even smaller firms can now afford—and actually benefit from—A.I.-powered tools. Dan Smigrod Exactly. And this leads us to the keynote on digital twins—another massive shift. What's amazing about digital twins is their versatility. In factories, they simulate production; in retail, they're creating virtual tours of spaces. It's this blending of physical and digital worlds. Eric Marquette Like, how cool is that? You can take a space or system and make the virtual version so detailed that you're basically predicting the future. I mean, airports, theme parks, entire cities—they're building these twins and saying, "Here's how we optimize this." It's wild stuff. Dan Smigrod This is shaping up to be one of the must-attend conferences of the year. From deep-dives like "Reality Capture and GIS" to big-picture panels about collaboration. Eric Marquette It's a glimpse into the future of how we design, create, and connect through 3D innovation. Dan Smigrod The 3DISE Conference 2025 ... is Thursday, April 24th and Friday, April 25th in Prague. Save 30 percent with code: WGAN30REG at 3DISE.com. That's 3-D-I-S-E dot com. We are back from IDS in Cologne, Germany. THANK YOU exocad for hosting us and everyone, be prepared for some amazing new features coming to you soon! Along with a TON of crazy good conversations. So when we got an email from the creators of a device that Elvis uses all the time asking to be on the podcast, we jumped at the opportunity. Luckly we were all going to be at the Cal-Lab Association (https://cal-lab.org/) meeting that happens the same week at Lab Day Chicago. This time, Elvis sits down with Danny Yao and Dr. Russell Crockett. Danny has a long history in sales with implants and full arch workflows. Dr. Crockett is a practicing Prosthodontist that loves to design better ways to do dentistry. Meeting awhile ago, Danny saw Dr. Crockett's prototype for a way to get accurate full arch records using just an iOS scanner. Together they created OptiSplint (https://digitalarches.com/collections/optisplint%C2%AE-the-easiest-and-most-accurate-implant-positioning-system-for-full-arch) and ArchTracer (https://digitalarches.com/collections/archtracer%E2%84%A2-the-only-fiducial-marker-you-will-ever-need). Simply put, they screw onto MUAs, lute together, and you can get a series of scans pretty much guaranteed to perfect. Want to know more about this amazing workflow? Take a listen as we dive deeper into all that Digital Arches (https://digitalarches.com/) does. Take it from Laura Prosser, the digital marketing manager for Ivoclar North America (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us). She would like to invite you to start following them on Instagram. It's your chance to obtain exclusive updates on product announcements, industry news, upcoming educational events, and heartwarming stories about our local team and industry professionals. Let's get social together. Simply start following us on Instagram @Ivoclar.na (https://www.instagram.com/ivoclar.na/). We'll see you there. Alan is joined with Dr. Armen Mirzayan and Damien Bonner of CAD-Ray for a second round of discussion on digital dentistry! Damien explains a typical progression of someone moving into digital dentistry. Companies shouldn't sell digital products to dentists that aren't ready for them. Armen is a very cheap salesperson. Buy your scanner from someone who knows something about scanners. CAD-Ray are terrible sales people but amazing support people. Armen on scan bodies One very cool thing about digital dentistry is that we can verify accuracy in ways that you can't in analog dentistry. Digital margins are tiny enough that we cannot manufacture to the tolerances that we actually see on the digital impression. The slop is in manufacturing more than digital scanning Photogrammetry and the accuracy of digital scanners over an edentulous scan. This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology. From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.About American Agri-WomenAmerican Agri-Women (AAW) promotes the welfare of our national security through a safe and reliable food, fiber and mineral supply. In this episode of "Your Drone Questions Answered" David Young, founder of Drone Launch Academy, discusses the use of drones for cell tower inspections. He is joined by Sam McGuire from Field Sync, an expert in the field. They dive into the topic and provide valuable insights on how drones are revolutionizing cell tower inspections.Sam shares his background experience with drones and cell towers, highlighting the opportunities that arise from integrating traditional workforce with drone technology. They discuss the evolution of the market and the importance of tailoring workflows to gather and analyze data effectively. In the early days, tower inspections were limited to the perspective of climbers and involved manual assessments of equipment, connections, and potential safety hazards. However, with the introduction of drones, the process has become more efficient and safer. Drones provide a comprehensive 360-degree view of the tower, allowing for detailed analysis and identification of issues such as loose connections, damaged structures, or safety system deficiencies. The discussion delves into the concept of a digital twin, where drones capture high-quality visual data that can be used for 2D visual assessments or to create a complete digital representation of the tower. This digital twin approach enables advanced analytics and detailed reporting for a better understanding of the tower's condition and maintenance needs.Sam emphasizes the importance of compliance with network operators' requirements, insurance coverage, and necessary documentation when conducting cell tower inspections. He also mentions the availability of software tools like DroneDeploy and Pix4D, which offer tower-specific options for processing the collected data and generating accurate digital representations. If you're interested in learning more about drones and cell tower inspections, this episode provides a wealth of information and practical insights from industry experts. EveryPoint combines photogrammetry techniques with the iPhone Pro's LiDAR scanner to fill in the gaps, as well as utilizes the positional / accelerometer data from the Apple AR toolkit. When combined, this delivers color 3D models that are said to be more accurate than simply using the iPhone's LiDAR scanner alone. EveryPoint is not an end user product in itself, but a technology layer on which developers can create their solutions, in construction and other industries. In this Podcast, Jonathan Stephens, the Chief Evangelist and Marketing Director at EveryPoint, talks about EveryPoint, the possible applications of photogrammetry, AI and machine learning – and the future of EveryPoint. “But here's my plug: All the great things about Christmas are present at Thanksgiving - without the pressure of buying shit for people. And so you get the feast. You get the opulent … the harvest feast. And you're usually connecting with an N of people that you have an N amount of feelings for. And maybe some people are struggling with their family - I get that. You're usually connecting with an extended group of people you care about and there's no pretense… It's just like, “Yeah, we gotta have this meal together.” Worst case scenario, you get into a turkey measuring contest. It happens. Because they believe in the synergies that are being created between you, the dental office, and your lab. And they want to further leverage these synergies. Their aligners are used as a pre-treatment to a larger restorative esthetic case, to widen gaps prior to placing implants, to close a diastema, ease crowding, and simply enhance your patient's smiles. Even for your Essix retainer needs your Gro3X aligner certified lab can help. Look for a Gro3X Aligner certified lab near you, such as Castle Dental Lab (http://www.castlelab.com/) in San Antonio, TX (ask for Blaine), AMK Dental Lab (https://www.amkdentallaboratory.com/) in O'Neill, NE (ask for Anne), Staggs Dental Lab (https://www.facebook.com/staggsdental) in McCoole Maryland (ask for Derrick), AA Dental Design (https://www.aadentaldesign.com/) in Murrieta, CA (ask for Frankie), and many, many more… For a complete listing of Gro3X Aligner Certified Labs go to www.gro3x.com Whip Mix (https://www.whipmix.com/) introduces the CUREbox Plus (https://www.whipmix.com/products/curebox-plus/), a new curing unit that ensures the proper and full polymerization of 3D printed resins.
