EP #289 - Radical Innovation - A Solo Show with your Host, Susan Burrell This month's theme is Innovation, which means to introduce something new / make changes in something established. Through the chaos of what is occurring in the world around us I believe we are being introduced to something new. We are being asked to listen to what else is out there and we are being challenged by what has been established. I believe this is all happening for a reason. We need to pay attention because through this heightened awareness we are being called to align to a higher frequency. So ask you, where are you holding resistance? Perhaps in your body? Perhaps you are blocking energy that needs to be released and perhaps it is in relation to something you are resisting? Are you being asked from within, from your higher self to innovate or create a new way of managing your life? Perhaps your problems, or responsibilities or the way you view what is occurring around you needs to shift. Consider introducing something new. For several years now I have been using oracle cards as a way of tapping into my intuition. And the cards I use are called Sacred Rebel Cards by Alana Fairchild. If you've never worked with oracle cards, I strongly recommend this deck. Consider this. You are your own authority. You can lean into your own inner wisdom. If you find you are asking others for their opinion, or seeking answers outside of yourself then maybe, just maybe it is time to shift to your own radical innovative self and lean into your own way of being. I am personally choosing to accept the shock of the new. I am stepping into a new journey, a new path of being healthier, happier and experiencing more freedom. Where in your life can you innovate? Shift? Change? Grow? Ask and see what happens. Thank you for listening. To learn more about how I show up in the world please visit my website: https://www.susanburrell.com/about-susan To purchase or learn more about Alana Fairchild's Oracle Cards, The Sacred Rebels visit: https://www.alanafairchild.com/oracle-deck/the-sacred-rebels-oracle-new-edition/
Joining the show this week is an industry titan who is shaping the next generation of hospitality professionals. Our guest is none other than Founder of the Radical Innovation hospitality awards, Founder and Chairman of the Hardy Group, John Hardy!John joins Host Dan Ryan to discuss the importance of innovation and creativity. John reflects on his journey, the challenges, and triumphs of innovative hospitality development, and the future trends shaping the industry. Discover his insights on creating unique, experiential hotels and the importance of continual innovation.Takeaways: Hospitality is about how you treat guests whether they are in your house or hotel. It is about making them feel comfortable, providing for their needs, and surprising them with extras. Innovation in the hotel industry often comes from outsiders rather than industry insiders, encouraging radical thinking. Creativity thrives when intuition guides decision-making, paving the way for unconventional ideas to flourish.Innovation often arises from challenging industry norms and embracing creativity. Embrace unconventional thinking and foster a culture of innovation to drive progress and success in your endeavors. The shift towards experiential accommodations like AutoCamp and Airbnb reflects a growing trend among younger consumers who are less brand loyal. To stay competitive, big brands are adapting to offer unique experiences tailored to this trend.Embrace risk, dedication, and innovative ideas to drive success. The people who will drive the industry forward are those who are willing to put in the time and effort and aren't afraid to risk failure. In challenging times with fluctuating interest rates, it's an opportunity to elevate deal-making skills and seize smarter opportunities for future success. Success lies in mastering both the risk and reward game throughout fluctuating cycles.Quote of the Show:“I never let somebody second guess what I thought was the right thing to do.” - John HardyLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-hardy-3a677812/ Website: https://www.radicalinnovation.io/ Website: https://www.jhgi.com/ Shout Outs:15:46 - I. One major way of innovating is to move into a domain with transferable and out of the box skills/ideas/technology. This presents obvious opportunities for radical change yet naturally produces equally obvious challenges. In this episode we look at how 4 co-founders created a payments infrastructure Fintech that now connects an amazing 7.5 billion bank accounts, 6 billion cards, connect banks in 144 countries and have 620 employees with offices in 35 countries. Ani came from FS and so understood not just how money currently moved but also the super-importance of understanding that its an incredibly regulated business. The other three co-founders came from the telecoms world and had no idea of how money moved. However they brought in what the telecom industry does very well – namely builds at scale, can process small volume transactions and deliver them instantly. Topics discussed include: moving a family from one country to another importance of getting outside one's comfort zone the value of cross-cultural working in terms of leading to creative and open thinking Ani's daughter can speak 7 languages (!) getting out of the box = getting out of the comfort zone importance of asking dumb questions “we just challenged everything and today that is probably the main reason we are the fastest growing company in this space” the simple Ur-notion behind Terrapay's foundation was that if an SMS can be delivered to anyone in the world instantly why can one not do the same with money? this concept versus the actual time and cost of sending money being waaaay higher than an SMS cashing US cheques in the UK – one would never imagine that Fintech existed transferability of competences – eg Sales in any domain to be done well needs a deep sense of understanding a customers pain and relieving that technology is similar (but different in eg APIs, protocols etc) cross domain – however note various strengths eg of telecoms tech versus FS tech the ever-changing landscape of technologies that customers can use which parts of the organogram are so key one needs either a co-founder or a super-senior C-suite colleague in order to innovate radically the need for confidence to ask “silly questions” answers to “dumb questions” that reveal core beliefs in a vertical rather than actual facts MotoGP and radical innovation as a case study the criticality of binding energy both within the co-founders and within the company culture in re company motto “stay hungry, stay humble” the Navajo and cultural preservation over millennia how does one know whether something that hasn't been done before can be done? budget and timescale, business savvy and feel in re finding problems that will last long enough to make the huge effort to produce a really radical solution worthwhile and long-lasting key takeaways on the experience of doing all this “Be prepared for a rough ride… you will have more tough and bad than good days” “Try to find simple solutions for a larger problem set” WhatsApp as being exemplary of One Great Solution – namely, unlike SMSs, being able to know when your message has been read and this as fundamental to their success shoutouts for Terrapay “no consumer knows us but we are the plumbing behind moving money around the globe” And much much more
Strawberry used to be known as Nordic Choice Hotels but went through a transformation to think much more expansively about hospitality. You may remember Carl Oldsberg talking about this a few months ago. In this episode, I want you to hear how Kari Anna Fiskvik brought everything she learned from technology leadership roles in the music, publishing, and fashion industries to Strawberry - where she became their Senior Vice President of Technology and is building the infrastructure that allows this company to be so innovative. Listen now to hear her first impressions of stepping into the world of hospitality (which I appreciate hearing from a fresh perspective), along with how she structured her teams, evaluated technology, and then approached change management so that Strawberry could get the most out of the technology it bought.Related: Our Bold Rebrand is Paying Off: The Story Behind Relaunching Nordic Choice Hotels as Strawberry - Carl Oldsberg, StrawberryWhat did you think about this episode? Joining the show this week is someone who believes that hotels are more than just a place to sleep and eat. Please welcome to the show, Global Chief Design, Technical Services & Innovation Officer for Premium, Midscale & Economy brands at Accor, Damien Perrot! In this vibrant conversation between Dan Ryan and Damien, the duo delve into the world of hospitality, hotel industry and its transformations. Damien shares his insights on everything from creating unique hotel experiences to the future of the industry. Takeaways: Hospitality is about connecting with people and leaving a lasting impression. It's the art of welcoming strangers who could become friends, even if you will only know them for a short time. The importance of creating memorable experiences in the hospitality industry cannot be understated. It's not just about food and beverage, but also about the ambiance and overall experience that sets a property apart and creates a destination.Creating a meaningful guest experience in a hotel involves immersing oneself in the local culture and surroundings, ensuring both guests and locals can truly live the experience they desire. This approach also proves to be profitable for hotel owners.Innovation in the hospitality industry extends beyond the confines of a hotel, encompassing the entire travel experience. By addressing pain points and enhancing guest satisfaction, hotels can create a positive and memorable stay for travelers.Hotels face the challenge of managing travelers' luggage, which often requires dedicated staff and even the use of meeting rooms. By allowing travelers to conveniently check their luggage at the hotel, the process is more efficient and hassle-free.Design in hotels goes beyond aesthetics, playing a vital role in guest experience. From achieving sustainability goals to driving profitability, investing in efficient and innovative solutions now is crucial for future success in a rapidly changing world. In the ever-changing world, being a part of shaping the future and challenging norms is exciting. Hospitality industry, like hotels, can play a vital role in evolving cities and ensuring a high quality of life amidst increasing urban density.Quote of the Show:“Hospitality is about welcoming people who are not yet your friends, but could become your friends.” - Damien PerrotLinks:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/accor_design/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/damien-perrot-42b6252/ Website: https://group.accor.com/en Shout Outs:01:43 - The New Museum: https://www.newmuseum.org/01:46 - Radical Innovation: https://www.radicalinnovation.io/ 01:58 - Marriott: https://www.marriott.com/default.mi 01:59 - Hilton: https://www.hilton.com/en/ 02:00 - IHG: https://www.ihg.com/ 05:08 - Mama Shelter: https://mamashelter.com/ 06:37 - Philippe Starck: https://www.starck.com/ 10:16 - Faena Miami: https://www.faena.com/miami-beach 10:38 - Fairmont Royal York: https://thefairmontroyalyork.com/ 14:40 - Alexis Henri C M Clerel Tocqueville17:56 - Ibis: https://ibis.accor.com/northamerica/index.en.shtml 37:28 - Wyndham: https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/ 37:42 - Novotel: https://novotel.accor.com/a/en/usa.html 40:26 - Chamonix: https://en.chamonix.com/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419Transistor: https://www.defininghospitality.live/

X's Astro Teller on Managing Moonshot Innovation | HBR IdeaCast with Alison Beard (#903) • Podcast NotesInside Amazon's Grand Challenge — a secretive lab working on cancer research and other ventureshttps://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/05/amazon-grand-challenge-moonshot-lab-google-glass-creator-babak-parviz.htmlThe Secret Lab Where Nike Invented the Power-Lacing Shoe of Our Dreamshttps://www.wired.com/2016/09/nike-self-lacing-design-hyperadapt/How The $1million Netflix Prize Spurred a Radical Innovation, Accidentallyhttps://www.forbes.com/sites/haydnshaughnessy/2011/06/28/how-the-1million-netflix-prize-spurred-a-radical-innovation-accidentally/百事可乐的开放创新平台https://www.pepsico.com/our-impact/esg-topics-a-z/open-innovationThe future of personalised beauty? Fifteen Minute Friday episode 24 with Steve Hoffman. - It's crucial for business people to identify when a client is not serious about buying to save time and resources. In the venture capital raising process, it's equally important to determine if the investor is the right person with the necessary information to make a decision. In sales, the likelihood of closing a deal decreases with each meeting after the third. Steve Hoffman, CEO of Founders Space and author of several books, shares the valuable lesson every sales professional should learn to determine if an investor is a good fit and achieve their goal in sales meetings. the first time saves you the time and mental energy of pursuing investors who are not serious. [05:58] - In venture capital, the chance of closing a deal on the first meeting is very small. But on the second meeting, there is a decent chance of closing a deal if, between the first meeting and the second meeting, you get them everything they need to make a decision. [06:27] - Every meeting you take after the third meeting, the chance of closing the deal starts to decline. Innovation can be classified into two main types: disruptive innovation and radical innovation. Radical innovation destroys the current market and value network, creating an entirely new one. Another way to think […]
Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust's (SMT) shareholders have had a rollercoaster ride in recent years. The trust's share price has more than halved since its peak last November, following a spectacular run throughout most of 2020 and 2021. It's now the UK's second largest investment trust with net assets of £13.7bn.In this interview, the trust's deputy manager Lawrence Burns explains why he and lead manager Tom Slater are sticking to their philosophy of trying to own high-growth long-term winners, despite changing macroeconomic conditions. Speaking with the IC's Mary McDougall, he talks through how he approaches valuing companies, the earnings and cash position of the portfolio's holdings and whether the valuation of the trust's private companies might have grounds for concern. He also explains how the team's thinking has evolved in relation to its Chinese holdings, what he has been buying and selling recently and which long-term themes he's most excited about. Burns joined Baillie Gifford in 2009 and has been deputy manager of Scottish Mortgage since March last year. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How do you talk about a product before anything like it exists? How do you guide the engineers building it and the marketing department who has to sell it? As co-creator of the iPod and iPhone, founder of the learning thermostat Nest, and with over 300 patents to his name, Tony Fadell is a serial entrepreneur who now focuses on investing. He tells Azeem Azhar how he uses opinion-based decision-making in his work, and why thinking like a product manager helps drive radical innovation.
Innovation is the key driver of continued organizational success. In this episode, Dr. Heather Johnson joins me to discuss radical innovation and its connection to lean innovation. Dr. Johnson is an expert on innovation, and her insights will help all organizations looking to improve their innovation process. HEATHER JOHNSON Dr. Heather Johnson is a scientist, an engineer, and a radical innovation scholar-practitioner with a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland Global Campus. She also has a master's in quality management with a focus in engineering & technology from Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Heather Johnson is a certified quality auditor (CQA), quality management systems expert with over 30 years of experience, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with ISO expertise. She has extensive work experience living and working internationally in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. CONNECT WITH HEATHER Website: http://www.montroseconsulting.net/ Key Topics in this podcast: Heather's career background Defining Radical Innovation and Lean Innovation The importance of knowledge retention, and what to do when your knowledge has left your organization How companies need to innovate How Heather helps other leaders innovate The innovation process that makes the team work faster and efficiently The importance of having a great leader KEY TAKEAWAYS Radical innovation is a term used to describe a game-changing idea or product that drastically improves upon existing technology or solutions. Radical innovations are typically characterized by their ability to create new markets or significantly disrupt existing ones. Lean innovation is about innovating with limited finance, resources, and assets. Lean innovation is not just a money thing; it's about using less people and fewer assets, whether they are tangible or intangible assets. Lean innovation also includes using less time to bring an innovation to customers. Knowledge is a valuable asset for any individual and organization. It allows us to make better decisions, solve problems more effectively, and create new opportunities. Knowledge retention is the process of keeping this valuable asset up-to-date and readily available. No organization or person has all the knowledge needed for radical innovation Partnering across internal and external organizational boundaries is essential. A leader with a growth mindset understands that intelligence and ability are not fixed traits. They recognize that everyone has the potential to grow and develop their skills. This enables them to create an environment where employees feel supported and motivated to learn and develop. As a result, employees are more engaged and productive, and the organization can achieve its goals. Memorable Quotes From Heather Johnson ‘'Don't get hung up on figuring out everything and knowing where you need to be. Go along for the ride. Go be adventurous, go explore, explore things outside of the box. You may have studied one thing in college, challenge yourself to look at something else that you never thought of going into. And it will broaden your horizon and it will change the game for you.”

For your business to succeed, you need to stay competitive. How do you do that? It starts with innovation, or better yet, radical innovation. If you're not familiar with radical innovation, no worries. We spoke with Steve Hoffman on our new podcast, and he explains everything you need to know about how to radically innovate, how to infuse that ethos into your business, and how to pull ahead of your competition. Steve Hoffman is the CEO of Founders Space, a global startup accelerator, with over 50 partners in 22 countries. Every year, he mentors hundreds of startups, helping them overcome their biggest challenges. Steve has founded three venture-funded and two bootstrapped startups, each of which is a unique tale. His book Make Elephants Fly is the #1 book on the process of radical innovation. Everyone needs to innovate to stay competitive. It doesn't matter if you're a startup founder, corporate executive, small business owner, freelancer, or professional, there's a technology out there that's going to upend your industry. The book is designed to help you implement the same innovation methodologies and processes as Silicon Valley's top startups. We begin our conversation with a look at how Steve went from being the CEO of Founders Space to deciding to publish a book. He shares his experiences of working with others to grow their businesses and the knowledge that informs his book, Make Elephants Fly. Ideas can be like elephants - big and seemingly immovable. How can you let your ideas out and make them fly? It can seem impossible, but in fact it can be done with the right team, resources, and perspective. Steve examines what innovation is, defining not only what innovation means, but also where it comes from. Believe it or not, innovation often doesn't come from those higher up on the career ladder. Rather, truly innovative ideas often come from lower-level employees and those with a unique perspective on the business, the customers, and the industry. And these ideas can come from any department within the company. Read more at https://petite2queen.com/category/podcasts/Support the show (https://p2q.link/donate)
How to survive, let alone succeed, in business has been changing slowly for decades. In the last 5 to 10 years, we've witnessed a much more radical transformation — a need for modern-day businesses to challenge the status quo. To reject beliefs that are widely and blindly accepted across the industry and create something new. This is the key to innovation according to our latest guest, Wil Reynolds, VP Innovation at Seer Interactive — a digital marketing agency that specializes in innovation across SEO, PPC, and Analytics. When Wil founded Seer in 2002, it was a one-person search firm. Today, it's comprised of a talented team of over 150 people who strive for leadership across the marketing industry. Seer was founded on the belief that when you share your time and talents with the community, everyone benefits. Wil's vision was to give everyone the flexibility they needed to contribute to the community in meaningful ways. Over a decade later, this still rings true. In this episode, he joins us to share his unconventional approach to running an agency and his philosophy on innovation. We also dive deeper into: Wil's entrepreneurial journey His decision to step down as CEO How to create an open & innovative workplace environment The importance of challenging executive leaders How to define innovation The value of thinking differently How to balance running a high-growth business & family Check out these resources that were mentioned in the show: Learn more about Seer Interactive Subscribe to Seer Interactive on Youtube Connect with Wil on LinkedIn Read Wil's blog on Medium:” If you want help with work life balance, define it.” If you want to hear more, subscribe to Leading with Data onApple Podcasts,Spotify, orhere. The COVID-19 crisis is far from over. How long the crisis remains is still an unknown. As many states are taking steps to reopen their marketplaces, government leaders and business owners may want to look to the hotel industry for some best practices. While nearly 20 percent of the nation's 57,000 hotels have closed, according to reports, the rest have remained open throughout the pandemic. Despite that, owners and operators know life will never go back to way it was before the crisis. Never before has innovative thought mattered more than during the current coronavirus pandemic. In this episode of Lodging Leaders podcast, we talk to Mitch Patel, CEO of Vision Hospitality Group, which kept its 40-some hotels open and is trying to figure out what the hospitality business will look like in the coming months and years. We also talk to John Hardy, CEO of The Hardy Group, a hotel development consulting company with offices all over the world. The company sponsors an annual event called Radical Innovation that spotlights new designs and business methods. And we hear from Adam Harris, co-founder and CEO of Cloudbeds, who stresses the importance that strong fundamental business practices play in a comeback.

[02:05] John shares how he became involved in community resiliency [04:20] John explains what he thinks the word resiliency means. [05:31] John talks about how communities across and within jurisdictional boundaries are responding to resiliency. [09:58] John relates the kind of conversation that takes place within the community he works in. [14:40] John comments on energy-cost burdens and how costs are factored into response strategies. [18:09] Is resiliency is just another word for disaster preparedness? [20:29] John addresses how to have the conversation of investing money for the benefit of something that won’t happen, like a flood. [23:28] John identifies the pieces of his plan that will continue beyond the grant. [27:07] John mentions how people find more information and take a look at Shelby’s resilience plan. Guest/Organization:John Zeanah is the Deputy Director of the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development. In this role, Mr. Zeanah assists the direction of planning functions including land use, comprehensive planning, sustainability and resilience, transportation, housing, and development services. Mr. Zeanah holds a BA in Political Science from Rhodes College and a Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of Memphis. Take Away Quotes:“I think the evolution of resilience is pushing people to think beyond just, how do you bounce back from a flood, or how do you build back from a hurricane, but also as you’re building back, as you’re bouncing back, how are you doing that in a way that’s addressing so many of the social and economic issues that your community may face.” “I don’t know that the way that we’ve thought about disaster preparedness as a practice has taken in, at least to the degree that we’ve seen in the last few years around resilience, this concept of focusing on co-benefits, focusing on the multiple benefits, and ensuring that what we do around a preparedness initiative or project in a community has benefits throughout the year.” “My advice for any community out there is think about when you have a disaster, whether it’s a flood or something else, what are the systems that have to get in place to be able to prevent damage from happening? What are the cleanup efforts that have to take place? What’s the dollar value of those things?” Resources:http://resilientshelby.com/ (Learn More about Shelby County’s Resilience Efforts) http://resilientshelby.com/overview/resilience-activities/resilience-plan/ (Resilient Shelby – Resilience Plan) https://shelbycountytn.gov/18/Planning-Development (Shelby County Planning and Development) http://midsouthgreenprint.org (Mid-South Regional Greenprint) http://infiniteearthacademy.com/podcast/radical-innovation-and-resilient-infrastructure-climate-adaptation/ (Infinite Earth Radio Episode 045 Radical Innovation and Resilient Infrastructure—Climate Adaptation) with Shalini Vajjhala
Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: I’m very interested in how innovation can be made better and one category of tools is related to team performance – higher performing teams can create products that produce higher value. One particular tool is Group Flow, which was the topic of a paper published by The International Council on Systems Engineering titled “Group Flow: the Genesis of Innovation.” Its author is Laurie Buss, who I interviewed to learn how teams can create group flow. When I discovered Laurie’s work, I felt like I found a kindred spirit based on how she describes innovation, which is, that … Innovation is key to the continued growth of established economies, not only for the creation of new designs, products, services, and markets but also for the development and retention of top-performing employees. She has a degree from UCLA in Aerospace Engineering and is highly regarded in the international satellite industry, working with numerous large organizations in spacecraft design and test, launch, operations, and many other aspects that require innovative thinking. She also has a new book coming out in the second quarter of 2017 with a working title of “Brainpower Redemption.” In this interview Laurie shares concrete steps to facilitate group flow, which includes 4 elements that are easily remembered using FLOW as an acronym: Focus,Location,O (for round table), andWork tools.

[30:35] Shalini shares what disaster preparedness and community resilience look like 30 years from now. GUEST/ORGANIZATION Shalini Vajjhala is the Founder and CEO of re:focus partners. Shalini has an interdisciplinary background with over a decade of experience in green design, engineering, economics, and policy. Before starting re:focus partners, Shalini served as Special Representative in the Office of Administrator Lisa Jackson at the US Environmental Protection Agency. In this position, she led the US-Brazil Joint Initiative on Urban Sustainability (JIUS) announced in March 2011 by Presidents Obama and Rousseff. The JIUS was a signature initiative of the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), demonstrating how environmental protection can serve as a driver for economic growth and job creation in building the greener economies and smarter cities of the future. Previously, Shalini served as Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Office of International & Tribal Affairs at the US EPA and as Deputy Associate Director for Energy and Climate at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. She joined the Obama Administration from Resources for the Future, where she was awarded a patent for her work on the Adaptation Atlas. Shalini received her Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy and B.Arch in Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University. re:focus partners are social entrepreneurs with expertise in public policy and sustainable development. They design integrated resilient infrastructure systems — including water, waste, and energy projects —and develop new public-private partnerships to align public funds and leverage private investment for vulnerable communities around the world. TAKEAWAY QUOTES“My work has taken a number of really interesting turns over the last few years, most of which look much more coherent in hindsight than I could have ever planned them out to be, but the common thread is actually working with communities on designing both policy systems and actual infrastructure services for the most vulnerable.” “A lot of environmental mandates are really difficult to comply with for cities that are really trying to do the right thing. So take, for example, a city like Philadelphia that was dealing with a failing stormwater system—the systems that are designed to manage sewers and storm flows—and Philly did something really creative: they actually announced that they were going to try to move to 100% green infrastructure.” “re:focus was really born out of trying to build a new approach for how governments could work with the private sector, with new investors, and with communities directly to...

Many industries, including consumer electronics and telecommunications equipment, are characterized with short product life-cycles, constant technological innovations, rapid product introductions, and fast obsoles- cence. Firms in such industries need to make frequent design changes to incorporate innovations, and the effort to keep up with the rate of technological change often leaves little room for the consideration of product reuse. In this paper, we study the design for reusability and product reuse decisions in the presence of both a known rate of incremental innovations and a stochastic rate of radical innovations over time. We formulate this problem as a Markov Decision Process. Our steady-state results conrm the conventional wisdom that a higher probability of radical innovations would lead to reductions in the rm's investments in reusability as well as the amount of reuse the rm ends up doing. Interestingly, the design for reusability decreases much more slowly than the actual reuse. We identify some specic scenarios, however, where there is no tradeoff between the possibility of radical innovations and the rms reusability and reuse decisions. Based on over 425,000 problem instances generated over the entire range of model parameters, we also provide insights into the negative impact of radical innovations on rm prots, but show that the environmental impact of increased radical innovation is not necessarily negative. Our results also have several implications for policy makers seeking to encourage reuse.
Do you identify as an activist, a social entrepreneur, or both? What do they have in common? In this audio lecture sponsored by the Stanford Center for Social Innovation, Hayagreeva Rao, explores how the joined hands of activists, or "market rebels," shape markets, and how this promotes or blocks innovation. Rao's lessons are applicable to leaders in the nonprofit and for-profit spheres, marketers, and activists who harness collective action for institutional and social change. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/hayagreeva_rao_-_market_rebels_how_activists_make_or_break_radical_innovati
