The world needs to understand Indonesia in the way that Indonesia has always deserved to be understood. For far too long, the story of Indonesia has been written with a foreign pen. Janet DeNeefe, the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival founder, is seeking to change that by harnessing Indonesian youth's immense power. Through food, literature, and other creative means, she believes that now is the time for Indonesia to finally author its own story and enchant the world.
This episode, 'Burnt Sugar', was a part of the 2020 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, and was originally released on 5 November 2020. It features Avni Doshi in conversation with Astrid Edwards. Avni Doshi's 'Burnt Sugar' has been shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. “An unsettling, sinewy debut, startling in its venom and disarming in its humour from the very first sentence,” according to The Guardian, it's a love story and a story about betrayal. But not between lovers – between a mother and daughter. Avni is an award-winning author with an Art History degree from Barnard College in New York and a Masters in History of Art from University College London. She was awarded the 2013 Tibor Jones South Asia Prize and 2014 Charles Pick Fellowship. Abdul Samad Haidari is a Hazara-Afghan journalist turned refugee poet, currently in Indonesia waiting for resettlement. Besides volunteering as a humanitarian-aid worker and teacher, Abdul is the author of the poetry collection “The Red Ribbon,” which is the 3rd best-selling book in Indonesia. Abdul talks to us about his background, his family, his book, his activities with the refugee community as well as the literary circles in Indonesia, coping with trauma, religion and censorship in Indonesia versus Afghanistan, and his views on life in Indonesia as a refugee. Abdul fled his home country at the age of seven and grew up wandering in Pakistan and Iran as a child refugee, and was separated from his family for the majority of his childhood. For two years, at the age of eight and nine, he was forced into child labour in the construction industry in Iran. In contrast, Pakistan offered refugees like him the opportunity to study and work. This education and work experience culminated in Abdul teaching computer studies and English language courses at the Intel Computer Center and Pak Oxford Professionals. After the collapse of the Taliban government, Abdul returned to Afghanistan thinking that the security situation had improved, and that he could take part in the reconstruction of his war-torn country. With this in mind, Abdul served as a freelance journalist and humanitarian aid-worker in areas of the country that remained dangerous to civilians because of the influence of terrorist groups. Abdul served with the Norwegian refugee council (NRC), ActionAid Afghanistan, Daily Outlook Afghanistan group of newspapers, and The Daily Afghanistan Express. As a freelance journalist, Abdul wrote articles and editorials about on-the-ground realities, which were then circulated widely. These had a particular focus on women and children's rights, corruption, transparency and accountability in government, warlords and terrorist groups' actions and the systematic persecution of minority groups in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Abdul was invited to Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in 2019. He attended several literary festivals in Jakarta and spoke in various human rights panel discussions with the UNHCR, IOM, and in other refugee-focused discussion groups. He is currently working on his PTSD book and has a few books of poetry, ready for editing to be published. It's deja vu for the Ubud Writers Festival which was born to rebuild the tourism economy after a crisis. Instead of cancelling, this year's festival called KEMBALI 2020: A Rebuild Bali Festival offers the event's broadest and most diverse lineup of some of the world's most celebrated writers, artists and cooks. Janet DeNeefe is the founder and director of multiple hospitality ventures in Bali, a massive foodie and book lover. She started the Ubud Writers Festival in response to the 2002 Bali bombings and later the Ubud Food Festival in 2015.Quotes From Episode"I was telling staff since March that we have to go online and because I was in Italy in February, so I can see the full effect of this tidal wave coming towards me like... I just thought holy mackerel, this is bigger than I imagined. So I came back from Europe and said to the team, we have to go online (and) I think they were just in a state of shock ... But it's very exciting too because it's all, new technology.""Another beautiful story is this weaving in Pejeng, they sort of dusted off the looms and decided to start weaving again. So we went to visit their little cottage industry and it was quite extraordinary because the age of the weavers started at about 25. I've never seen that before in 30 years, never seen young women at the looms."-Janet DeNeefeDon't miss:2:23 - Why this pandemic is completely deja vu in Bali4:30 - How the Balinese are pivoting5:45 - Sourdough bread adventures9:01 - Re-imagining Bali after Covid13:12 - Why Janet didn't cancel the festival this year19:21 - How the program is different this time20:53 - An unexpected Covid outcome with young Balinese weavers31:58 - Janet's annual holiday in a pirate shipResources or Links Mentioned:www.ubudwritersfestival.comwww.ubudfoodfestival.comcasalunabali.comConnect with Upon Arrival: Email: uponarrivalpodcast@gmail.com
In Contemplation with Seno Gumira Ajidarma”.
