Essential Habits is a new weekly series from High Performance. Hosted by Damian Hughes, each episode breaks down powerful habits from world-class performers and thinkers - so you can apply them in your own life. Here's Damian's take on the first episode, featuring Jo Malone: "Sometimes life moves so fast we forget we even can stop. That's something Jo reminded me of in this episode, the quiet power of pausing and taking stock before charging ahead.Jo's story is a masterclass in resilience and reinvention. With around 6,000 thoughts flying through our minds each day, many of them negative, it's not just about thinking less, but choosing what's worth holding on to. Together, we explore how stopping to organise our thoughts and truly understand our story can turn moments of crisis into turning points.I also unpack a fascinating piece of neuroscience, a study with a less-than-glamorous title, but a powerful message, showing how our brains naturally prioritise rewarding memories. If you've ever wanted to hold on to what matters and let the rest slip away… this one's for you."Here is a list of studies referenced in the episode:The Persistence and Transience of Memory. What happens when a secret society demands your fortune—or sacrifices innocent lives instead? An electrifying tale of power, greed, and morality. The Minions of Midas by Jack London. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. It's been nearly two weeks since we narrated A Thousand Deaths by Jack London, and since then, we've received numerous requests for more stories from one of America's most renowned authors. We appreciate your emails and encourage you to tell us what you what to hear on the podcast, scott@lostscifi.com.Jack London was an interesting character. He ran for Mayor of Oakland, California twice in 1901 and 1905 as the Socialist candidate and lost both both times garnering less than a thousand votes in those elections. Did you know that today's story The Minions of Midas was turned into a Netflix series in 2020? The show is set in Madrid, Spain, and while it's originally in Spanish, it's also available in English. How cool is that? A story Jack London wrote back in 1901—that was mostly overlooked for nearly 120 years—is now a full-blown miniseries! I found it here in Costa Rica, but I'm not sure if it's available everywhere.Chances are you have never read nor ever heard The Minions of Midas but that is about to change. A discussion of Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor. hotliterati.com
"I think it is very interesting to open a debate and talk about this impact of the culture, this epoch, in the subjectivity and never losing the internal work within psychoanalysis, within our consulting room. So when I quote the Lacanian way of saying the ‘declination of the father's name', I am talking about these times, this epoch, in which the reference and the subjectivity fails in respecting what we can call ‘the authority'. But ‘the authority' means not authoritarian systems - it is the law, it is the possibility of symbolization, and it's the way of being free too, because without some limits you cannot be creative, you cannot be open to symbolization. We are talking about how the ‘other' is working in this new social environment and how this evanescence of the father's name is part of a situation that leaves open to the death drive." Episode Description: We begin with recognizing the aspects of chaos that surround us in the real-world. Gabriela takes us from there into the chaos that often lives internally. She then addresses the clinical space which allows for its emergence through the dyad. She speaks of the evanescence of the father's name, authority vs authoritarianism, the 'halo of metaphors' and the nature of the analyst's 'open form' of clinical engagement. Gabriela describes analytic cure as "step by step, so that love and not revenge for pain predominate." She shares with us her early life involving her child analysis, her study of architecture and her now working as an analyst and a painter. We had the pleasure of interviewing VENUES over Zoom video! With their third album “Transience”, VENUES effortlessly pushes the boundaries of what is possible in modern metal. After two strong predecessors “Aspire” and “Solace”, oscillating somewhere between post-hardcore, alternative metal and metalcore, the Stuttgart-based band are finally tearing down all barriers, borders and walls. “Transience” unleashes an emotional cascade full of great melodies, visionary soundscapes, abysmal heaviness and visceral, unfiltered emotion. This is not just an album. This is catharsis. A medicine for a sick world. The antidote to dreariness, indifference and coldness. And yet it is anything but a given fact that VENUES are still standing. Old members left, corona hit hard; yet, from a long dark tunnel emerged a band that has somehow only grown bigger, stronger, more fearless through all the setbacks and catastrophes. “Since our last album, we've grown together enormously as a band,” confirms shouter Robin Baumann. Since 2019, he has been sharing the vocals with wonder voice Lela Gruber, who has given VENUES a huge boost and is easily one of the most versatile, strongest vocalists in modern metal – a voice like an axe for the frozen sea within us. “We all pulled together and can now talk openly about everything,” she says. “That has brought a whole new vibe to the band – not to mention that insane energy.”You can hear it, but you can feel it even more: The ten songs on “Transience” revolve around vanitas, farewells, new beginnings and the inevitability of change; they are emotional projectiles that hit home exactly where they hurt the most: right into our wounded hearts. Recorded in three creative and harmonious sessions with their long-time producer and confidante Christoph Wieczorek (Annisokay) at Sawdust Recordings in Halle, the final act in their trilogy bears all the pain of a wounded world. VENUES don't look away, don't suppress anything, don't sugarcoat. But they don't give up on themselves and this world either and sing, scream and play against powerlessness. They live, they suffer, they love, they breathe; they don't close their eyes to toxic relationships (“Unspoken Words”), they channel emotional baggage (“Godspeed, Goodbye”). But VENUES are at their most moving in their most intimate moments. When Robin Baumann addresses his mother's cancer in “Braille”, for example, or when Lela sings about imprisonment in the depressing “Coming Home”. “I haven't yet managed to sing this song without crying,” she says quietly. This vulnerability, this unfiltered empathy leads to an incredibly intense, at times painstakingly honest album that draws on post-hardcore, alternative rock and electronic prisms. A healing thunderstorm, no less. “When I think back to my 16-year-old self, sitting sadly in his room and immersed in music, I realise what we are actually doing here and that we are this important band for some people today,” says singer Lela. They are: The bristling power of Bring Me The Horizon goes hand in hand with the symphonic arena demolition of In This Moment, infused with a very unique sound that has once and for all become an unmistakable brand on album three. “Transience” is a camera obscura, a prism composed of numerous dazzling facets and immortalised by a band at a new creative and musical peak. “Our last album was a pretty heavy metal record in response to our debut; this time we consciously wanted to be as open and multi-faceted as we are as individuals,” says Robin. “This album sounds the way we always wanted to sound.”VENUES are a metal band at heart, of course. Nevertheless, this has never been a band for those who prefer to think in drawers. For those who don't want to miss out on great melodies or powerful breakdowns, in turn, they are: The band has been playing their way up step by step since 2015. First “Aspire”, then “Solace”, touring extensively for both records. Since the last album, VENUES have been on the road with Emil Bulls and Blind Channel and played in Wacken, and the first new songs were already released back in 2022. You can feel how hungry the band is right now, how eager to live out their momentum. It's not the first time people have said this about this band, but: VENUES are just getting started. We want to hear from you! San Francisco began its American life as a city largely made up of transient men, arriving from afar to participate in the gold rush and various attendant enterprises. This large population of men on the move made the new and booming city a hub of what "respectable" easterners considered vice: drinking, gambling, and sex work, among other activities. In City of Vice: Transience and San Francisco's Urban History, 1848-1917 (U Nebraska Press, 2024), historical architect James Mallery describes how and why San Francisco became the titular "city of vice" by tracking the people and activities that local elites would rather have stayed hidden. In doing so, he paints a remarkable picture of a city undertaking remarkable growth and the limits of elite power to control the habits of a large, mobile, urban population. Through famous San Francisco neighborhoods like Chinatown and the Tenderloin, out to the city's "Outside Lands" outskirts, Mallery shows how neighborhoods are defined by more than just the sum of activities outsiders might see as immoral - they're complex places made up of of complex people, and that even the most run down neighborhood has a brilliant history worth telling. Psalms 62 - A Reflection Psalm 62 is a profound piece of biblical poetry attributed to King David, expressing deep trust and confidence in God as the ultimate source of salvation and refuge. The psalm is a declaration of faith, emphasizing the importance of relying on God alone in times of trouble and uncertainty. Below is a breakdown of the key themes and verses in Psalm 62: 1. Trust in God Alone (Verses 1-2) “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” David begins by affirming his complete reliance on God for peace and salvation. He describes God as a rock and fortress, indicating stability and protection. This opening sets the tone for the entire psalm, highlighting unwavering faith. 2. The Futility of Human Opposition (Verses 3-4) “How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.” Here, David acknowledges the threats and deceit he faces from his enemies. He likens himself to a tottering fence, vulnerable to being pushed over. Despite this, his trust in God remains steadfast. 3. Renewed Affirmation of Trust (Verses 5-8) “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” David reiterates his faith in God, urging others to do the same. He emphasizes that salvation, honor, and security come from God alone. This section is an invitation to trust and pour out one's heart to God. 4. The Transience of Human Life and Wealth (Verses 9-10) “Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.” David reflects on the fleeting nature of human existence and the emptiness of relying on wealth or dishonest gain. He warns against placing hope in material possessions or corrupt practices. 5. God's Power and Steadfast Love (Verses 11-12) “One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: ‘Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love'; and, ‘You reward everyone according to what they have done.'” The psalm concludes with a powerful declaration of God's attributes: His unmatched power and unfailing love. David acknowledges that God is just and will reward people according to their deeds. Themes and Lessons •Unwavering Faith: The psalmist's unwavering faith in God serves as a model for believers to trust God wholly, especially during trials. •God as Refuge: The repeated references to God as a rock, fortress, and refuge underscore the idea that true security and peace come from God alone. •Human Frailty: The psalm highlights the transient nature of human life and the futility of placing trust in wealth or human power. •God's Justice and Love: It reassures believers of God's just nature and His steadfast love, emphasizing that God's power is tempered by His mercy and love. Application Psalm 62 encourages individuals to place their trust in God, regardless of circumstances. It calls for a deep, personal relationship with God, characterized by honesty and reliance on His strength and love. Believers are reminded to find their rest and hope in God, to remain steadfast in faith, and to avoid the pitfalls of relying on material wealth or human strength. This psalm is a source of comfort and strength, urging believers to pour out their hearts to God, knowing He is a refuge and a rewarder of faithfulnessBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

Transience – the fleeting nature of existence, lasting only for a short time. For the German-based post-metal band Venues, this concept has profound meaning. Their latest album is a testament to their seamless transition into new chapters of their lives, both individually and collectively, a journey that is evident in their music. I had the pleasure of sitting down with members Lela, Robin, and Valentin to discuss "Transience" and the band's evolution over the past three years, both on and off the stage. Following the success of their previous album, "Solace," which firmly established Venues in the contemporary post-metal scene, the band has continued to push boundaries with "Transience," despite lineup changes. Their songwriting has never been more fluid, with each track brimming with significant passages and verses. As we kick off season 17, Venues remain driven by their passion for their craft. "Transience" is now available worldwide, showcasing Venues at their finest.Stay connected with Venues visit: https://arising-empire.com/artists/venues, https://www.facebook.com/VENUESofficial/ and https://www.instagram.com/venuesofficial/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/
Adam Bohn's young life consisted of constant moving. His mom went from place to place often living in difficult circumstances. When he was 7 he finally found stability in rural Wisconsin as his mom married the only father he ever knew. However 5 years tragedy struck and he was gone. His next years were even more difficult and in spite of his athletic prowess, he found him self drowning his sorrows in substance abuse. Two stints in prison the death of his mother who overdosed and a patient and loving wife brought him to himself. He now lives a life of sobriety using his artistic abilities in a viable trade. His story will definitely touch your heart. It has been said that a band really doesn't fully discover their sound until their 3rd album. It may not be 100% true, but it is something many people look at.We have a German band returning to the podcast for the 3rd time, on their 3rd album, and they say they have found their sound that is truly them, and allows for expansion in the future. And... we agree.Robin, Lela, and Vale from Venues join the podcast for the band's 3 appearance. The band's new album, Transience, releases on March 28th, so we dive into the album talking aboutHow Venues fully discovered their sound on this album, going with more of a modern metal style that still incorporates heavier metalcore elements, and more sonically flowing vocals to maximum effect. The final song Coming Home, and why the band has not been able to get through the song without crying. Why the band has continued to grow every year, coming closer to a potential US tour. Hello, dear listeners, travelers of the celestial realm, and co-pilots. This new session evolves around the ethos of an album that I just put out entitled 'Bloom', and is one that ushers in a re-invention and reinvigorating of our mental and physical being. As we weather the storms of life's turbulent forces, we need enlightenment and encouragement so that we can pick ourselves up, knock of the dirt and negative vibes, and bring in a rebirth and passion for not only living but striving. That's it, dear listeners, striving!! And THRIVING!! It rhymes, and now all of a sudden I feel like Dr. Seuss. Working to be better tomorrow than we are today requires incremental steps. We hear the expression 'Rome wasn't built in a day' and, well, neither were we. Take the time in planning your re-entry into the world as a better version of yourself every single day. It requires mental energy to develop the creative means to plan our re-entry into our proposed new world, and it takes physical energy to implement those changes around us. But, the biggest and most effect change is within us, in our minds and hearts. Work to calibrate and synchronize these with your new mission. Expend the mental energy so that the task of pushing through your boundaries is well rewarded. This session is your comforting pillow of that much needed mental reset. We at Spaceman's Transmissions propose that you set aside a quiet hour-ish of time to let everything go, and let the tapestry here guide you to the prairie of peaceful vibes. A place where you can assemble your collage of innovative endeavors which will bring your incrementally closer to where you view yourself. Fill in the gaps that separate where you are and where you want to be, as if you are patching holes in the wall for a fresh, new coat of colorful and vibrant paint. Through effort and realization of your potential comes the reward of a newly emerging you! The stormy night that you endured will pass over you, and the stage will reset for you to explore and set up for new scenes to create and thrive in. Lather, rinse, repeat. Don't take your renewals for granted, dear listener. Celebrate each victory as a reward to yourself for reaching and surpassing milestone, not unlike traveling past a dark cosmic tide to reemerge into a realm of a breathtaking starlit field of beauty. I'm with you, dear travelers, and as your co-pilot I have full faith that your journey and effort will yield great success. Okay, yes, as mentioned, shameless plug time (sorry!). I put our a new album entitled Bloom (of course) which can be found by going to https://www.tonepoet-music.com. My music was, is, and always will be free so that you can all have access to it. It is my gift to you, dear listeners, as my thanks for your attendance during the voyages that we undertake. Peace.
