Send us a textThis month we read and review She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. Like all of our reviews, the first part is spoiler free. Here's a little about She Who Became the Sun:To possess the Mandate of Heaven, the female monk Zhu will do anything“I refuse to be nothing…”In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family's eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family's clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected. When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother's identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate. After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future her brother's abandoned greatness. We hope you enjoy the episode!Do you have a book you'd like us to review on this show? Oh my GOD we finally read this book. And it was good! But we are not without thoughts. Turns out 400+ pages of characters hating themselves is occasionally a bummer. Cyrus flip flops on the topic of duologies. Sarah is weirdly positive about the constant misogyny. They both don't talk enough about the horny pain play. Support the Show.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR! We recorded on Valentine's Day, so Laura accidentally got really into the "love theme" and talked about a recent romance read and a horrible reality "love" tv show. Hannah had thoughts on some recent reads and made a great point that we still need to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones even if the books we read are excellent. Then Then it's time to discuss the characters of OWWR Stand-alone Showdown Winner and we are sad, but also so glad to have read and talked about this book. We are back deep diving into one of our favourite reads this year - She Who Became The Sun. Joining us is author Shelley Parker-Chan herself and it felt like the fitting book to end our year with. Firstly because it's such an epic and emotional read and secondly because it totally fits into all our gender discussions of the past week. We talk all sorts from fan-fiction writing to bitchy eunuchs and a protagonist that burns with want and how it fits in the world of Asian historical fantasy.

GUEST: Shelley Parker-Chan is an Asian-Australian former diplomat and international development adviser who spent nearly a decade working on human rights, gender equality and LGBT rights in Southeast Asia. Named after the Romantic poet, she was raised on a steady diet of Greek myths, Arthurian legend and Chinese tales of suffering and tragic romance. Her debut novel She Who Became the Sun owes more than a little to all three. A lush, fresh literary voice merges with commercial appeal in this accomplished, poetic debut of war and destiny. Sweeping across an epic alternate China, She Who Became the Sun is Mulan meets The Song of Achilles—a bold reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty as the story of a female monk who will stop at nothing to gain the Mandate of Heaven and achieve greatness. Daily Mail calls it “Immersive storytelling at its finest,” and her novel, just released in July 2021, has already become a #1 international bestseller and is an Editor's Pick for Science Fiction/Fantasy. In 2017 she was awarded an Otherwise (Tiptree) Fellowship for a work of speculative narrative that expands our understanding of gender. She currently lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her family. https://shelleyparkerchan.com/ HOST: Allison M. Hubbard is a multi-genre novelist, focusing on literary science fiction, contemporary romance, and women's fiction. Her debut novel, dibs, was named a Finalist and Reader's Choice Category Leader for Romance in the 2020 Kindle Book Awards. Her newest release, Move On, Melinda, is now available. Allison is also the co-host of Vox Vomitus, the number one show on the Authors on the Air Radio Network. https://afictionalhubbard.com/
