Frontline hiring is more competitive than ever, with speed and efficiency now critical for success. However, the challenge doesn't stop at making the hiring process faster; employers also need to stand out from their competition by offering a high-quality candidate experience and having a recruiting process that allows them to showcase what makes their organization unique. It's clear that AI-powered recruiting is already driving speed and efficiency in frontline hiring for many large organizations, but what's the right balance between technology and humans to deliver an exceptional candidate experience and highlight an organization's unique culture? My guests this week are Sonja Breuer, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, and Aaron Einhorn, Senior HR Business Partner at Hamra Enterprises. In our conversation, they share how Hamra has successfully leveraged AI-powered recruiting technology to reduce their time-to-hire from 13 days to just 4. They also discuss how this has enabled them to better highlight the values, benefits, and culture that make Hamra Enterprises a uniquely attractive employer. In the interview, we discuss: Hamra's unique culture and employee programs Using AI to radically reduce time to hire  Maintaining a consistent and engaging candidate experience Combining conversational AI with purposeful human connections Why speed, experimentation, and agility are critical in AI-powered recruiting. What happens if the AI makes a mistake? Building a true partnership with their technology vendor to drive innovation. What does the future look like Follow this podcast on Apple Podcasts. On Tuesday afternoon, the Israeli security cabinet approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the cabinet and then with a pre-recorded video addressed the Israeli public, expressing his support for the deal. But in the leadup to the security cabinet vote, and while Netanyahu was making his case in support of the deal, Israel has been engaging in some of its heaviest bombardment of southern Lebanon since mid-September. On Monday the 26th, attacks killed 55 people and injured 160 in Lebanon. And on Tuesday, the IDF launched an intense blitz of 20 bombings in just 2 minutes, then later in the day bombed an apartment building in Hamra, a commercial area of Beirut.Over 3,800 people have been killed in Lebanon and nearly 16,000 wounded by the IDF since October 7, 2023.In making his public case for the ceasefire, which is a much-needed development to give reprieve to the people of Southern Lebanon, Netanyahu gave three reasons: First, to “focus on the Iranian threat.” Second, to “give our forces a breather and replenish stocks,” referring to the IDF. And third, to “separate the fronts” in the war.To make sense of these breaking developments and put them into an appropriate historical context, we're joined by Richard Becker. He's an anti-imperialist activist and organizer and the author of Palestine, Israel and the US Empire, which you can find at 1804 Books.Support the show

Welcome to the seventh episode of "Here I Am with Shai Davidai," a podcast that delves into the rising tide of antisemitism through insightful discussions with top Jewish advocates. In this episode of Here I Am With Shai Davidai, Shai Davidai engages in a deep and insightful conversation with Abraham Hamra, a proud Syrian Jew, about Jewish identity and unity. The discussion covers a range of topics, including the significance of Israel as the indigenous homeland of the Jewish people and the challenges of maintaining Jewish identity in the face of external labels and identities imposed by others. Abraham emphasizes the importance of unity within the Jewish community, arguing against divisive labels like Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. He shares his personal experiences of displacement and discrimination as a Jew from an Arab country, highlighting the historical and ongoing struggles faced by Jews in similar situations. The conversation also delves into the impact of extremist ideologies on Jewish safety and identity, with Abraham discussing the threats posed by both extremist Islamic ideologies and progressive woke ideologies. He underscores the need for the Jewish community to unite and fight against these threats collectively. Throughout the episode, Abraham and Shai explore the idea that despite differences in religious observance and cultural background, Jews are united by their shared history and identity. They discuss the importance of honest dialogue and mutual understanding in fostering unity and resilience within the Jewish community. Join us as we shed light on these critical conversations and work towards a future free from hate.

In this episode (#327): We wrap up our “Effective Leadership” series with the CEO of Hamra Enterprises, Mike Hamra. My guest dives into how he uses his leadership style to thrive with the ownership of Wendy's, Panera, Noodles, and Caribou Coffee franchises. These are just a few of the endeavors of this conglomerate, that also include a multitude of community projects and charitable activities, plus he is running for governor of Missouri. With an “all people matter” attitude and servant heart to work with people, not just paper and numbers, Mike Hamra has elevated the business exponentially and used lessons he learned through sports-good times and challenging times-to become an effective leader. Joining and eventually taking over Hamra Enterprises in 2001 there were 26 stores, there are now 198 stores in eleven states, with over 7,400 employees. A fitting wrap-up to our series to have the epitome of an effective leader.

Using Beverages Other Than Wine for Kiddush

The Halachic sources address the possibility of using "Hamar Medina" – literally, "the country's beverage" – for Kiddush and Habdala under certain circumstances. Before discussing when precisely this is allowed, it is important to first define the term and understand to which beverages it refers. According to several Halachic authorities, including Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Israel, 1923-1998) and Hacham Ovadia Yosef, the term "Hamar Medina" refers to an intoxicating beverage that is commonly drunk for enjoyment, and not just used to quench thirst. The word "Hamar" comes from the word "Hamra" – "wine" – and thus must resemble wine in that it has intoxicating properties. One common example would be beer. Here in the United States, whisky and scotch would certainly fall under the category of "Hamar Medina." In Israel, beverages like arak and cognac would qualify. There are three views among the early Halachic authorities as to when one may use "Hamar Medina" for Kiddush. At one extreme, the Geonim maintained that one who does not have wine may use "Hamar Medina" for Kiddush both on Friday night and on Shabbat morning. At the other extreme, the Rambam (Rav Moshe Maimonides, Spain-Egypt, 1135-1204) maintained that "Hamar Medina" may never be used for Kiddush, neither on Friday night nor on Shabbat morning. In between these two extremes, the Rosh (Rabbenu Asher Ben Yehiel, 1250-1327) maintained that one who does not have wine may use "Hamar Medina" on Shabbat morning, but at night, it is preferable to recite Kiddush over bread. The reason, the Rosh explains, is that if one recites Kiddush over bread on Shabbat morning, it will not be discernible that he recites Kiddush, since there is no Kiddush text on Shabbat morning besides the Beracha over the wine. If one recites Kiddush over bread on Shabbat, all he recites is "Ha'mosi," which does not appear as Kiddush. Therefore, in such a case, when one does not have wine on Shabbat morning, it is preferable to use "Hamar Medina." On Friday night, however, when Kiddush includes a special Beracha ("Mekadesh Ha'Shabbat"), it is preferable to recite Kiddush over bread rather than use "Hamar Medina."The Shulhan Aruch (272:9) cites all three views, and expresses his approval of the Rosh's opinion, describing it as "Dibreh Ta'am" ("reasonable words"). Thus, according to the Shulhan Aruch, one who does not have wine or grape juice on Friday night should recite Kiddush over bread, and one who does not have wine or grape juice on Shabbat morning should recite Kiddush over "Hamar Medina."Many people in our community have the practice of reciting Kiddush over scotch or whiskey on Shabbat morning. This practice is questionable, for two reasons. First, as we have seen, one who has access to wine must use wine for Kiddush according to all opinions. In our society, of course, wine and grape juice are readily available and not particularly expensive, and there is thus no reason to use a different beverage. Of course, if it happens that on one occasion, for some reason, one was unable to obtain wine, or if he is unable to drink wine, then he may use a different beverage, but this is not generally the case in today's day and age. Secondly, Kiddush must be recited over a "Rebi'it" – approximately 3.3 ounces – and one must drink the amount of "Melo Lugmav" – approximately 1.7 ounces. Most people cannot drink this amount of scotch or whiskey in one shot.To justify this practice, we might suggest that the people who make Kiddush on these beverages rely on the view cited by the Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933) that one who prefers "Hamar Medina" may use it for Kiddush even if wine is available. Since many people prefer to drink scotch or whiskey rather than wine, they may, according to this view, use scotch or whiskey for Kiddush. It should be noted, however, that Hacham Ovadia Yosef does not follow this opinion. It is also possible that this practice originated among Syrian Jews back in Syria, where wine was expensive and difficult for many people to obtain. Even so, this does not justify the use of other beverages nowadays, when wine is easily accessible. As for the difficulty in drinking the minimum required amount of scotch or whiskey, there is an opinion among the Poskim that it suffices for a "Melo Lugmav" to be drunk collectively by all the people participating in the Kiddush. Therefore, even though the one reciting Kiddush cannot drink 1.7 ounces of scotch, if everybody collectively drinks this amount, this should suffice according to one opinion. However, the Shulhan Aruch is ambivalent about this view, as is Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Therefore, if, after the fact, somebody recited Kiddush over scotch or whiskey, and everybody collectively drank 1.7 ounces, they have fulfilled their obligation, but this should not be done. Kiddush should be recited specifically over wine or grape juice, except in the rare instances where wine is unavailable or cannot be used for some other reason. This applies to Habdala, as well. One should use wine or grape juice, and other beverages may be used only if one cannot drink wine or does not have access to wine. One should not recite Habdala over bread. Interestingly, there were some prominent Rabbis who were known to use beverages such as tea, coffee or milk for Habdala, but as mentioned earlier, both Hacham Bension Abba Shaul and Hacham Ovadia Yosef maintained that the term "Hamar Medina" refers specifically to intoxicating beverages. In their view, one who recites Habdala over a non-alcoholic beverage (other than grape juice) recites a Beracha Le'batala (Beracha in vain).Summary: Kiddush on Friday night and Shabbat morning must be recited specifically over wine or grape juice. If one does not have access to wine or grape juice, or is unable to drink wine or grape juice, then on Friday night he should recite Kiddush over bread, and on Shabbat day he should recite Kiddush over a different alcoholic beverage, such as beer, scotch or whiskey. One who does not have wine or grape juice for Habdala should use a different alcoholic beverage.

M., Möbius, W., Früholz, I., Ackermann, F., Gültas, M., Garner, C. C., Hamra, F. K., Neef, J., Strenzke, N., Moser, T. Abstract: Cochlear inner hair cells (IHCs) form specialized ribbon synapses with spiral ganglion neurons that tirelessly transmit sound information at high rates over long time periods with extreme temporal precision. This functional specialization is essential for precise sound encoding and is attributed to a distinct molecular machinery with unique players or splice variants compared to conventional neuronal synapses. Among these is the active zone (AZ) scaffold protein piccolo/aczonin, which is represented by its short splice variant piccolino at cochlear and retinal ribbon synapses. While the function of piccolo at synapses of the central nervous system has been intensively investigated, the role of piccolino at IHC synapses remains unclear. In this study, we characterized the structure and function of IHC-synapses in piccolo gene-trap mutant rats (Pclogt/gt). We found a mild hearing deficit with elevated thresholds and reduced amplitudes of auditory brainstem responses. Ca2+ channel distribution and ribbon morphology were altered in apical IHCs, while their presynaptic function seemed unchanged. We conclude that piccolino contributes to the AZ organization in IHCs and is essential for normal synaptic transmission. Copy rights belong to original authors. Aslında, Batı Sahra meselesinin serencâmı hatırlandığında, Fas'ın tavrının “sürpriz” olmadığı da anlaşılır: İsmini “Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia al Hamra and Rio de Oro” (“Sâkiyetu'l-Hamrâ ve Vâdî Zeheb'in Kurtuluşu İçin Halk Cephesi”) ifadesinin kısaltmasından alan Polisario Cephesi, 10 Mayıs 1973'te bir grup üniversite öğrencisi tarafından kuruldu. Fas-Cezayir-Moritanya üçgeninde bugün on binlerce sivil, iptidai mülteci kamplarındaki zor şartlar altında yaşam mücadelesi veriyor.

We are finally back with LIVE events! Rejoice fellow introverts who occasionally would like to see some like-minded people. We interviewed Hanna Alkaf at Lit Books (our favourite lil bookish spot) on her book Queen of the Tiles. We put up a scrabble game and was horrified to find out some of her fans DO NOT KNOW how to play Scrabble! ZOMG but we digress, it was a lovely event and we got to nerd out on words, talk about normalising mental health and her latest heroine, Najwa who it in Hanna's word, 'smarter than me by far.' We also got a sneak peak of her next middle grade book, Hamra and the Jungle of Memories and got to sign her scrabble notebook. *coughs* 'nerds'

Ten years ago, English Department Lecturer in Creative Writing Rima Rantisi and some colleagues in a Hamra pub came up with the idea of launching a new student literary journal. Today, Rusted Radishes is published once a year in Arabic and English, and is open to AUB students and faculty and others across the Arab region. It has expanded beyond literary writing to include poetry, drama, essays, photography, graphics and other art forms. Rima Rantisi retraces this journey, which stresses training talented young writers and creative artists who address human, literary, political, artistic, and personal subjects, “without the interference of a censor – because literature and art get to the heart of issues that matter to people, and reflect the human condition.” The online selection of texts is at RustedRadishes.com, where the printed full version can be ordered.

Eileen joins me today to talk about her journey surviving an event that no-one should have to – losing her husband and the father of three of her children in a plane crash just a few days before Christmas. In the months and years that followed Eileen became determined to find joy and purpose in her life following that tragedy, both for herself and as an example for her children. With her MBA in finance, she became an angel investor, using the money she gained through ethical capitalism to make a positive impact in the world. She is also a yogi, a holistic wellness and life coach, and an author. Her book Time to Fly was seven years in the making. She has since remarried to her second soulmate and she and her new husband completed their blended family with the birth of baby Zack a few years ago. I loved talking with Eileen about her process from businesswoman to host of coaching retreats and getting her particular spin on creativity and spirituality. I know you will, too. Please join us.    KEY TAKEAWAYS - your community is there to help you through hard times, if you can find the strength within yourself to ask for help.  Finding any purpose will get you out of bed. You can change your purpose later. Find something, in the wake of grief, to get you moving. - the deaths and painful moments we go through can be gifts, because we honor our loved ones and our pain through transforming our grief.” - when you find joy on the other side of grief, it is that much more tender and heart-opening. BEST MOMENTS “I'm not like a grief expert. I'm not going to write a 123 Agree with Me. I was like, ‘who's going to want to hear my story?'” - “I think what I'd like to share is that grief keeps happening. And that's a good thing. It's a beautiful process to incorporate (Brian)'s memory into the present moment.” - “What I noticed in those moments, what was present for me was so much love. It was people reaching out. Every human being no matter even what they said, even if they said the wrong thing -- you know, they were doing it all out of love.” “The pain is right there for us to go through.”  ABOUT THE GUEST Eileen is a mother, a wife, a yogi, a holistic nutritionist, a life coach, and an author. She has seen first-hand the positive changed wrought by ethical capitalism and is an impact investor.  Just over 10 years ago, her husband Brian died in a tragic plane crash a few days before Christmas, leaving Eileen and their three young children to cope and re-imagine their life after that unimaginable loss. After she mourned the loss of what could have been, she became determined to shape meaning out of grief, and to live her life with a sense of passion and joy. In the intervening years she met her next chapter in life, her husband Mike, and together they had a son, Zach, completing their blended family.    Join us for an hour of authentic conversation about loss, love, and laughter, about the power of hope to rebuild our lives.    CONTACT METHOD Eileen's website https://www.eileenrobertsonhamra.com/ Eileen on: Twitter https://twitter.com/EileenRHamra Facebook https://www.facebook.com/eileenrobertsonhamra/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eileenrhamra/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eileen-robertson-hamra-48b86637/ We Fit Together on:  Instagram https://www.instagram.com/we_fittogether/ Linktree: https://linktr.ee/We_FitTogether ABOUT THE HOST  The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton' from the ‘Mighty 247' company is your main host of ‘Fire in The Belly'.  Pete is an entrepreneur, mentor, coach, property Investor, and father of three beautiful girls. Our guest today is an author, speaker, investor and life coach. More importantly she is a mother, a mother with a very special story to share. When life hits you unexpectedly you realize a gift inside you which is even more powerful than you could ever imagine. Eileen Robertson Hamra is the woman you meet—at the gym, in the coffee shop, or dropping off the kids at school—with a story that draws you in the minute she begins to tell it. At age forty-one, after losing her husband in a plane crash, she became a single mother to three children aged eight, seven and four. Overnight, the man she thought she would spend eternity with, the literal pilot of her family's wonderful life, was gone. When everything seemed broken, the future she dreamed about now impossible, Eileen had to make choices she never imagined making. What she did choose to do was peel herself out of bed those first few weeks of mourning, and with constant love and support from family and friends, she found a well of inner strength and she dipped down into it. Working through her own grief and the grief of her children, Eileen experienced a gradual spiritual awakening. The result? On the other side of tragedy, she found new love, gave birth to a miracle child, and rediscovered her calling: to build stronger, loving and ever evolving families.Eileen believes we don't always get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose the story we tell when asked, “What happened?”For more on Eileen and her book, "Time to Fly":https://www.eileenrobertsonhamra.com/time-to-fly-book/For more information and other valuable resources, make sure to subscribe, follow and visit our sites.Website: www.thevoiceofmany.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theevoiceofmany/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/TheVoiceofMany3Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Voice-of-ManyLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/the-voice-of-many-podcast-1417a81b7Support the show (https://pod.fan/the-voice-of-many-podcast)
