An English-language production of the Winner of the Best European Drama Award at the Audio Drama Awards 2022. The Lion tells a compelling and thought-provoking story about a community's response to an escaped lion in a city. A host of characters, including the town's Chief Constable and an Economist, are forced to face the unprecedented crisis. Their differing - often conflicted - responses speak to a nation coming to grips with a new dawn. This high-octane satire about the restoration of Estonian independence has resonance far beyond Estonia's national events of 1991, and speaks to collective responses to all manner of global and community crises. Chief Constable . . . . . Mark Benton Valter Saarniit . . . . . James Northcote Commissioner . . . . . Ewan Bailey Mayor . . . . . Georgie Glen Heinz . . . . . Samuel James Heli . . . . . Leah Marks Secretary . . . . . Kymberley Cochrane Makishev . . . . . Hasan Dixon Meelis . . . . . Connor Curren The drama is based on Martin Algus's short story The Lion. It was adapted for ERR, Estonian Public Radio, by Andres Noormets. Original sound design was by Külli Tüli. This English-language version was translated by Adam Cullen, edited by Peter Ringrose, and directed and produced for BBC Radio 4 by Andres Noormets and Sasha Yevtushenko.

Erik Jensen is the Editor-in-Chief of The Saturday Paper - but I promise that he didn't see the questions before recording the podcast. Although he does so well, you would be forgiven for thinking he did. As well as a journalist, Erik is a poet and a biographer. He wrote Acute Misfortune: The Life and Death of Adam Cullen and he also adapted the screenplay in which Daniel Henshall - the other guest on this episode - played the late artist. Together they do extremely well at the quiz - scoring almost as many bonus points as regular points! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-saturday-quiz. In this episode, we speak to writer and journalist Erik Jensen.Erik is editor-in-chief of Schwartz, the publisher behind 7am, the Monthly and the Saturday Paper.Erik's book Acute Misfortune is a portrait of Australian grunge artist Adam Cullen. Cullen was a painter devoted to his own larrikin mythology, a construct Erik peels away.In this discussion, Erik talks about his writing process, the influence of David Marr on his early days as a reporter, and the paradox of being an author who hates being edited. He also talks about his new book of poetry, the revival of narrative journalism, and the difference between being a writer and a journalist. You can support us via Patreon here. For a transcript and more on this episode, visit the Mont Icons page at Litmus Media. For more on Mont Publishing House, visit our website.Theme music: Low Life 'Friends'***** Please rate our podcast ***** See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Did "two-phones Billy" do for himself, as Andrew supposes, or did the odds Shorten against Labor because we're all so focused on the hip pocket? Are the GoT fans right to be angry about that finale or does it actually make sense, as Karl insists? And if you met a psycho like Archibald Prize-winning painter Adam Cullen would you spend four years in his company, as journalist Erik Jensen did for his book Acute Misfortune (now a movie starring Daniel Henshall and Toby Wallace), or would you get the hell out of there? No question is too big, too small, too obvious or too obscure for Andrew Young and Karl Quinn on the only pop culture gabfest from Melbourne hosted by these two. Erik Jensen is an author and founding editor of The Saturday Paper. At the age of 15, he fronted up to the office of a Sydney street press and became a music critic and journalist, then received a job offer from The Sydney Morning Herald after finishing high school. Since then, he has written a biography of Australian artist Adam Cullen and became the founding editor of The Saturday Paper, a Schwartz Media publication which recently celebrated its second birthday. Now 27, Erik has seen the business of journalism change from up close, and the weekly newspaper he edits has become an integral part of the Australian media landscape. When he visited Brisbane in mid-June to host a panel at the Inspire Festival, Erik and I met for the first time at the hotel where he was staying. I have written a couple of stories for The Saturday Paper, so this episode marks the first time I've interviewed a current editor of mine on Penmanship. Our conversation touches on how Erik's apprenticeship as a news journalist began with sitting nearby fearsome reporters such as David Marr and Kate McClymont; how launching The Saturday Paper drove him to the point of physical exhaustion in its first six months of existence; what happened when the producers of Australian Story attempted to film a television documentary about his life, and how learning to write in shorthand helped him immensely when he sat down to write his book Acute Misfortune following four years of reporting. Erik Jensen is the founding editor of The Saturday Paper. Before that, he was a journalist at The Sydney Morning Herald, where he won the Walkley Award for Young Print Journalist of the Year and the UNAA's Media Peace Award. His first book, Acute Misfortune: The Life and Death of Adam Cullen, won the Nib Prize and was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards and the Walkley Book Award. He has written for various publications, and for the sitcom Please Like Me. After another bit of a delay and SOME JOLLY CRAZY HAPPENINGS in Australian politics, we’re back. Hello. Erik Jensen is the definition of “precocious”. He’s in his mid-twenties and he’s already won a Walkley Award and he’s responsible for the launch and editing the highly-respected Saturday Paper – a weekly, centrist newspaper dedicated to long-form narrative journalism. Plus he’s written a critically-acclaimed biography of artist Adam Cullen, he likes cool music and is very funny. What an arsehole. In this chat Erik tells me about his beginnings in and passion for journalism, the over-arching philosophy behind TSP, the media and bias, the Abbott government’s “paucity of ideas”, leaks and opinion polls and just where things might go with Malcolm Turnbull as our new Prime Minister.
