Johnson. Karen is a graduate of Georgetown Law Center and a former Fulbright Scholar in Afghanistan. She holds Master's Degrees in both Public Health and Public International Affairs. She's a retired Administrative Law Judge of more than 30 years, former Army officer (retired), a master practitioner of energy medicine, and author of “Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss.” Listen in to hear Karen's journey from her left-brained world into spirituality, how she uses the four winds medicine wheel, and how you can get in touch with your inner divine too. Topics We Discuss: [1:30] Talk about a shift! Karen was living a left-brained life in Washington, DC working as a Federal Judge, when her 27 year old son tragically died from a heroin overdose. Karen says sometimes death is a doorway to a spiritual life. Shortly after his death, Karen experienced an afterlife visitation from her son, started sensing and seeing him, and then started seeing other spirits. She now helps “stuck” spirits cross over. [9:10] How to edge yourself toward your own psychic sense of other realms: first get over the hurdle of disbelieving and allow yourself to tune into your intuition. For most of us, our intuition has been shut off because over the years we've been told to focus on the facts. Karen tells people to imagine saying to your left brain, “Thank you for all you've done, but I want to play with my right brain.” Set your intention. Open your heart. [10:30] Karen's honest discussion of how severe her grief became, eventually feeling desperately suicidal. A spiritual course in Joshua Tree, California turned things around for her. She began her spiritual journey. [14:10] Karen's book, “Living Grief” is based on Indigenous medicine wheels as applied to grief. There are four directions (north, east, west and south) and four practices associated with each direction; therefore, 16 ways to journey from being stuck in our grief to a place of rebirth. We can create a new life out of the ashes that honors our loved ones. [16:00] Karen's healing practice uses ceremony. In the West, we understand ceremony when we walk into a temple or a church: there are candles and we get a feeling of that sacred place and the divine. Even if we're not a member of that religion, we might go light a candle. Karen helps mirror that experience of the divine by getting people from their reptilian brain to their ceremonial brain in the neocortex. [25:45] By releasing the chatter in our minds and being in stillness, we can experience the divinity within us. We're not just physical creatures. We have a spiritual, transcendent element that we want to get in touch with and allow to guide us. [30:01] Indigineous alchemy. What if we're wired for transformation? What if we have this inherent nature that looks for transformation and change? By keeping ourselves stuck, we're actually holding in negative energy that affects our bodies. [35:10] Psychopomps are beings that can go between realms; Karen leaves this realm and goes in the in-between to help souls transition to the other side. FOLLOW KAREN V. When Karen Johnson's 27-year-old son Ben died due to a drug overdose, her world came to an abrupt halt. Enveloped in unbearable grief with no spiritual belief, Karen tried to make sense of everything while communicating with Ben's spirit in the Afterlife. Karen left her lifetime appointment as a Federal Judge of over 30 years, sold all of her belongings, and went on a 2½ year journey around the world in search of healing and understanding of the spirit world she was now communicating with. Communication with Ben's spirit increased during her travels, leading her to discover shamanism as her new path. https://karenjohnson.net/ Received 2022 Silver Nautlius Book Award & Nominated for the COVR Award in Shamanism and Reincarnation, Death & Grieving BUY LIVING GRIEVING HERE ON AMAZON OVERVIEW I wrote a book entitled Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss. I want people who are grieving to know something really important. They may be feeling stuck in their grief and wondering why they can't seem to “get over it”. I felt the same way until I realized we do not get over grief. It's not like catching the flu, we aren't sick. There is no cure and we can't medicate it away. Grief is a state of being that carries energy that we can tap into to create a new life. Just as we use the energy of other newly acquired states of being like marriage or parenthood to transform our lives, we can likewise use the energy of grieving to transform. My precious twenty-seven-year-old son, Ben, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge to the other side on November 2, 2014. He died of a heroin overdose. I never thought this could happen to him, to me, to our family. I didn't see it coming. The lives of those he left behind are forever changed by this tragedy. Death seemed completely final to me – it is Death after all. But I found there was so much more to death for Ben and for me when I realized we were both trying to figure out our new states of being. We both eventually found our way. Before I experienced grieving for myself, it never occurred to me to see grief as a journey of transformation, or to find the blessings of the grieving process, or about allowing myself to grow into the state of living with grief. I had to figure it out by myself. It was a lonely path of self-discovery that was not mainstream and not accepted. I didn't bow to social expectation and “accept it” or “get over it” in a way that made people around me comfortable. Instead, I did the unexpected. I retired, sold my house and all my household goods and went on a two-and-a-half-year journey that took me all over the world on a search for meaning. What I did was considered to be so far beyond the norm that my sanity was questioned. But I was fortunate, I had money and power, an unstoppable will, and a thirst to find meaning in my tragic loss. I didn't think I could ever find my way out of despair, but I found a process that worked, a sacred journey and map, and I want to share it with others so they can heal, too. But make no mistake, this is not an easy journey. Instead of accepting death and the things we are told about death such as “it just happened,” or “it is what it is” and “you have to accept it”, I am proposing embracing Death as a radical agent of change given to us out of LOVE. Instead of stagnation and despair that so often accompanies acceptance, embracing death and our journey allows us to ultimately bloom and grow into a new and better version of ourselves. Death has issued a challenge to us—we can seize the opportunity for growth or stagnate in despair. Our departed loved ones do not want to see us stagnate. They gave us the ultimate gift so that we can create new and better lives. This is our destiny. As an alternative to acceptance and stagnation, we can courageously make the journey through bereavement to transition, to resurrection and, ultimately, to rebirth. There are other maps in literature that can guide us, including The Hero's Journey promoted in the work of Joseph Campbell. Another is found in The Folktale of Paul Bunyon, The Hero Lumberjack, a story told through the eyes of Clay Filinger, a young man from the backwoods of Kentucky who leaves his home on a journey of American exploration. But this journey is our own – though we are guided by the map of the bereaved, each journey is sacred and unique.

Dr. Jeanette welcomes Karen Johnson, to share her story of grief, loss, and transformation after losing her son. She is the author of a new book, Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss. Grief, how does it affect our heart, soul and spiritual being? How are we existing in this world when our loved ones transition on? Do we feel alone, distant, hurt, broken hearted, and realizing shattered dreams of lives taken too quickly? There is no template for the process of grief and it is a unique experience. Can we see it is our life process of transformation? What if our loss, brings about changes in our live that turns us on end, takes away all familiarity, and safety, while putting us into a place that is truly a shock to our system? When you have a big awakening in your life, can you let everything go to create a new world for your heart and spirit? What happens when nothing fits?Chronic grief; are you stuck in trying to reprint and reproduce the life that was lost? Can we let their spirit go, untether from the memories, and set them free?Time to notice the grief process is an evolution through change, and that, is the moment in time we are in as awakened beings on this earth. For more information on Karen visit: www.KarenJohnson.netFor a free newsletter, gentle healing book, and articles from Dr. Jeanette visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com Dr. Jeanette works with End of Life, life transformation and the soul journey experiences and provides compassionate care that heals the heart on many levels of our existence. Karen V. Johnson is the author of Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss. In 2014, her twenty-seven-year-old son, Ben died of a heroin overdose. She shares on her website: “it never occurred to me to see grief as a journey of transformation, or to find the blessings in the grieving process, or about allowing myself to grow into the state of living with grief. I had to figure it out by myself. It was a lonely path of self-discovery that was not mainstream and not accepted.” She decided to retire, sell her house, and went on a two-and-a-half year journey that took her all over the world on a search for meaning in her tragic loss. This was especially surprising to others considering she had spent the previous thirty years as a criminal and energy law attorney and administrative law judge in Washington D.C. During our conversation we talk about the following: How she moved from a state of sadness and despair over her son's death to finding greater meaning and purpose in it Her two year journey across the world learning how to use energy medicine and shamanic healing practices Specific advice and ceremonies people can use to help them transform their grief How people can better manage sadness, guilt, anger, and despair when they are grieving How she transitioned from being an administrative law judge to having a deeply fulfilling career as an author, consultant, and energy medicine practitioner How you can follow your dreams and create a deeply fulfilling life

With the Holidays over, many people are left to cope with their magnified feelings of grief & loss of a loved one, a beloved pet, a job that no longer exists, loss of income, a home, and even a loss of self. According to The Atlantic 72% of Americans say that they know someone who has died or hospitalized due to COVID, making 6.6 million Americans could be effected by bereavement. A recent study by UCLA indicates how Americans are suffering Psychological Distress from a job loss. Karen V. Johnson's fast-paced professional career as a lifetime appointed Federal Judge came to an abrupt halt when she lost her 27 year-old son to a heroin overdose. Rather than grieve in a way that made people around her comfortable, she did the unexpected. She quit her job, sold her house with all her belongings, and went on a 2½ year journey that took her all over the world, finding a healing practice along the way. Karen didn't think she could ever find her way out of despair, but she found a process that works and shares the journey of transformation with others so they can heal too. Karen V. Johnson, JD, is a graduate of Georgetown Law Center (J.D.), a former Fulbright Scholar in Afghanistan, and holds Masters Degrees in Public Health and Public and International Affairs (MPH, MPIA). Karen is a retired federal administrative law judge who practiced criminal and energy law for more than 30 years. She also is a former U.S. Army officer, Major, USAR (inactive). Karen was personally trained by Alberto Villoldo, and is faculty at the Four Winds Society and a Master Practitioner of Energy Medicine. She has trained extensively in the techniques of Illumination, Soul Retrieval, Extractions of Energies and Entities, Divination, and Death Rites. Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss (Hay House, July 7th, 2021), is her first book. Find out more about her at https://karenjohnson.net/
This week we welcome to the show Karen Johnson. Karen is a shaman, healer, and former judge. She was catapulted into the life of a healer when her son died suddenly of a heroin overdose at the age of twenty seven. Leaving her old life behind, Karen embarked on a multi-year spiritual quest around the world, ultimately discovering -among many modalities and sources of spiritual nourishment- shamanic energy medicine. (Karen is actually my teacher at the Four Winds Academy, which comes up a couple of times in the show.) She joins us today to talk about her brand new book, Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss. A really great chat about a really powerful topic. Enjoy. Today's conversation is with Karen Johnson, a healer and writer who spent 30 years of her life working as a judge until her beloved son, Ben, died from an overdose at 27. After that devastating experience, she sold her home, retired, spent 2 and a half years traveling and interviewing shamans, and ultimately became one herself. This episode is about Karen's journey with grief and the world beyond. She emphasizes that, while it will take time, we don't have to be stuck in our grief and our loved ones don't want us to be stuck as it keeps them from doing their work on the other side. If you want to know how to find the wisdom and energy in grief that can be used to create a new life and how to trust the universe, this is a must-listen. I'd love to know what you think. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. Marina Pirkle joins today to talk about grief and how we can find the tools we need to deal with it when it arises in all its overwhelmingness. This episode is for everyone, as we all process grief at one time or another. Marina shares about her very dark time of learning about grief and almost taking her own life in the shock that was the aftermath of the death of her sister, who was also a daughter to her. Amy shares her own grief from her father's passing and a friend who passed recently. How can we get more out of our heads and into our hearts, and what will that bring us? She answers this and more and addresses the new mosaic of self that can be created after we are broken. Marina also generously offers free resources to all of us that you can access HERE.
