For years, Cecilia lived a life dedicated to health and fitness and encouraged others to prioritise their well-being. But one thing didn't align with her values: alcohol.Cecilia didn't drink often, but when she did, she didn't like how it made her feel. It clashed with the lifestyle she professionally advocated.Welcome to the next round—where we explore what happens after people evaluate their relationship with alcohol. Whether you're a daily drinker or an occasional binge drinker, alcohol can affect your life in both physical and psychological ways. Can quitting open up new perspectives? This week's guest, Cecilia Shandeva, a Workplace Wellbeing Professional and Grief Recovery Specialist, proves that no matter where you start, social pressures remain the same—but cutting out alcohol can make a huge difference. While the physical benefits of quitting are clear, the biggest gains may come from the psychological transformation.“Everything about drinking isn't fully aligned with me, who I really am as a person.”For years, Cecilia lived a life dedicated to health and fitness. She ran marathons, led group workouts, and encouraged others to prioritize their well-being. But one thing wasn't aligning with her values: her drinking habits.“I considered myself a social drinker, I'd go out maybe once a month, and sometimes I'd take a break for a couple of months. But then there were times, like around birthdays or Christmas, when I'd drink more than I planned. Even when I thought I was controlling it, I wasn't.”Despite drinking less frequently than some, the impact was undeniable. The hangovers, the anxiety, the lost days of recovery – Cecilia realised that alcohol was taking away from the life she wanted to live.“If I went out planning to have one or two drinks, it would usually end up being more. I was waking up feeling awful, regretting the night before, questioning my decisions – even if I hadn't done anything particularly bad.”Find Club Soda:The Club Soda Tasting Room is at 39 Drury Lane, London, WC2B 5RRFind us on Instagram

The biggest skill I use is listening. Grievers don't need to be fixed. They need to be heard. - Louise Strasenburgh The holidays are supposed to be joyful, but if you've lost someone you love, they can be tough. This week's guest is here to help. Louise Strasenburgh is a grief recovery specialist and the author of the book The Space In My Heart. In 2011, her 26-year-old son Oliver's body was found wrapped in a carpet in Puerto Rico. In the middle of this horrific loss, her mother died, and then her daughter got married. Needless to say, Louise experienced a roller coaster of emotions in a short period of time. Desperate to find a community of people who understood her loss, she discovered The Compassionate Friends, compassionatefriends.org, a non-profit that provides friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents. It wasn't long before Louise became certified as a grief recovery specialist and became a leader within her local TCF chapter. Says Louise: “Imagine grieving parents, sitting in a circle, going around the room, saying their name and how their child died. By the time you get to the end of the circle, your heart is flooded with compassion. Here we all are, and we have to find a way to integrate this loss into our lives and still go forward. Born in England and raised in Portugal, Louise has moved 32 times and in this interview, declares that she's not done yet. A former flight attendant for Pan Am, she was born to travel and loves the excitement of learning about new places and meeting people from around the world. Her book The Space In My Heart was written during the Pandemic as a coping tool for loss. Using the story of her two Westies, Digger and Daisy, as the protagonists, the book explains grief and loss to children but applies to people of all ages. The daughter of a squadron leader in the UK's Royal Air Force who fought during World War II, Louise credits her father and Queen Elizabeth as her role models. “She was my queen from the day I was born, says Louise, and my father was a person of great integrity who taught me: When things go right, hold tight. When things go wrong, be strong.” For 23 minutes of hope and healing, just hit that download button. #grief #loss#mourning #hope #healing

Hi everyone, welcome back to "Healing Starts with the Heart." I'm Sharon, your host, and today I want to talk about something very close to my heart: helping you heal from heartbreak and find peace and joy again. If you're feeling alone, overwhelmed, or just lost in your grief, I'm here to support you. I understand the pain of a broken heart deeply because I've been there too. After the death of my nephew Austin, I thought I would never really live again. I was consumed by grief. But then, something changed. I was introduced to a Grief Recovery Specialist, and through their guidance, I learned the tools to move beyond this pain. This experience was so transformative for me that I knew I had to dedicate my life to helping others find their way through grief. And you know what? You can find your own recovery too. Say "Yes" to healing your life. Say "Yes" to enjoying an authentic life that honors the memory of those you love. It's not about forgetting them; it's about finding a way to remember them with love, not just pain. I've been teaching my grief program for over 17 years now, and I can tell you, there is hope. You can heal. Recovery from this pain is not just a dream; it's a real possibility. And remember, healing doesn't mean forgetting. You will always remember your loved one. But one day, you'll find that you can talk about them with a smile, remembering the good times, not just the loss. So, if you're ready to start your journey to recovery, I'm here to help. Thank you for joining me on "Healing Starts with the Heart." You're not alone in this. You can heal, and you can find joy again. Until next time, take care. https://beacons.ai/thegriefschool

"When feel resourced [to handle grief], then we feel confident. When we have growth in our confidence to experience it [grief], then there's a bit of invincibility. And that invincibility makes us fearless. Then grief is not the same experience anymore in our life." This week's special guest on Welcome to the Other Side is AmarAtma Khalsa, a Grief Coach and overall delightfully deep human. AmarAtma (a two word first name that means Eternal or Timeless Soul) is a Grief Coach with advanced certification as a Grief Recovery Specialist. He's a Board Certified Chaplain, having worked with thousands of hours with grievers in a Trauma-1 University Hospital specializing in end-of-life care, palliative care, trauma, and critical care. He has a dual Master's Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Divinity and uses a trauma-informed, mind-body-spirit approach to teaching and helping grievers from the many losses that occur through life. He currently offers 1:1 virtual grief coaching to grievers on how to grieve and how to let go. AmarAtma shares a new way of approaching grief in our lives, one that will leave us transformed and ever more resilient. For the divorced moms in the audience, we talk about the various forms of grief in divorce, including how to grieve loss of control of our kids' lives. Here are a few quotes from AmarAtma: "This is real emotional scuba diving." "Grief is a response, not an emotion." "Grief in divorce is a death without a body." "Grief is defined as many emotions at the same time, sometimes contradictory or conflictual with each other; with varying power & energy." "Grief work is emotional resiliency work." "We don't drown in our emotions. We drown in our thoughts about our emotions." Fair warning, you're going to want to hire AmarAtma as soon as you listen to this. I do. He's on my list of next coaches to work with. Brilliant, fun, deep, human. Enjoy! p.s. AmarAtma mentioned using a Feelings Wheel to help us get more specific about naming the emotions we're feeling within our grief. Louanne's bio: I stood at the foot of my husband's hospital bed... "Where is the book?" I asked the doctor. "What book?" he asked... "The book that tells me how to do this..." I was 33 years old and my 35 year old husband lay in the bed, just pronounced brain dead. It was the most devastating loss I had experienced in my life. Through this unexpected blow in life, I learned many lessons that I did not want to learn, but I did learn something profound. I wanted to help other people through the horribleness of grief. After doing much research on what type of certification I wanted to get in order to help people, I discovered the Grief Recovery Method website. I signed up for their certification program and became a Grief Recovery Specialist in 2016. The Grief Recovery Method is a practical, action based program that fit my beliefs and lifestyle. I have now helped over 150 people walk through the small and correct actions that allow people to come from pain to relief. I have heard over and over again how much of a life changing impact this program has had on a person's life. And I personally know the positive impact it has had on mine. I currently live in the lovely hamlet of Mount Pleasant, NC and work in surrounding areas that include Concord, Charlotte, Matthews, Albemarle and other small towns around me. I have had the priviledge of working one on one with some people, I have taught "When Children Grieve" to staff at a local Christian School, I currently teach classes of 6-8 people based on the Grief Recovery Method, and one of my favorite classes to teach is the Pet Loss class. I am also certified through the Grief Recovery Institute to teach the Grief Recovery Method over the internet using video technology, for those who want to recover from a loss in the comfort of their home!

Grief is both a very individual experience as well as a universal reality. At some point in our lives, we will all lose something or someone that we hold dear to us. It will make a significant impact on who we are, how we understand the world, and how we do our work, but the thing to know about grief is that, while painful, it can ultimately lead to a deeper appreciation for life and living. In the end, this can only strengthen our resolve to lead meaningful, full lives. When we are grieving, it can be hard to put into words the wide array of emotions that we feel: regret, outrage, sadness, guilt, and helplessness among them. In times like this, it's often helpful to turn to the wise words of others who have also experienced grief — both as a means of support and a reminder that things will get easier over time. As renowned painter Henri Matisse once said, “The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” Welcome Back! Sona Bhatnagar M.D. tragically lost her husband, Mohit, and son, Nachu, within ten months of each other. After navigating immense loss, negotiating with betrayal, and learning to walk the path of grief she founded griefhealed.com and the Grief Healed Meetup. She has made it her mission to help others find their way through all of the many losses we experience as humans, and find a way to forgive, heal, and move forward. A few years after the immense losses of Sona's son and husband, she faced her own near-death experience (NDE). Sona shares about her NDE, greeting her son in spirit, and the comfort it provided. Dr. Bhatnagar has been featured twice on Arianna Huffington's website Thrive Global and Cleveland radio personality Philip Keller's podcast Blind Faith Live! Real People. Real Miracles, where she discussed triumphing over grief on the episode “Life and Death."She received her medical degree from the University of Florida and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Maryland. She has been a practicing physician for over 30 years and a Grief Recovery Specialist. She supplements her standard medical training with integrative medicine, including hypnotherapy, Reiki, Alpha, and Theta healing, Johrei and Pranic Healing, Matrix and Reconnective Healing, and Emotional Freedom Techniques.Sona's manuscript had been very well-received by her focus group of fellow physicians, internationally known spiritual healers, and members of her grief support group––all of whom found tremendous value in its content and encouraged her to seek publication to reach a wide audience. Additionally, during her son's illness she received support from U2's Bono and The Edge, as well as from Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert.FB: @Sona Bhatnagar, M.D.Instagram: @sonabhatnagarmdWebsite: griefhealed.comThe book: Grief Healed
