In this episode of Everyone's Talkin' Money, we're diving into the untold story of stay-at-home moms and financial independence with Karen Johnson, also known as The 21st Century SAHM. Karen opens up about her powerful new book, What Do I Want to Be When They Grow Up?, and the identity crisis many mothers face when they step away from a paycheck to raise their kids. You'll hear: How to reclaim your financial worth as a stay-at-home mom — even if you're not bringing in income The emotional and financial cost of sacrificing your career for your family and how to rebuild your sense of self Why investing in yourself isn't selfish — and how to do it without the mom guilt How to have honest money conversations with your partner when you're not earning a paycheck Karen's top advice for women in their 40s navigating big life pivots and financial decisions Whether you're a stay-at-home mom, a working mom, or somewhere in between, this conversation will remind you that your worth isn't defined by a paycheck — and that it's never too late to invest in you. You'll walk away learning:  Many women feel guilt about pursuing interests outside of motherhood. Motherhood can feel like a death of previous identity. Social media often portrays an unrealistic view of motherhood. Women are conditioned to feel guilty about not enjoying every moment. Perfectionism can negatively impact mental health in motherhood. It's important to focus on accomplishments rather than shortcomings. Unpaid labor in the household is valuable and should be recognized. Women should feel empowered to ask for what they deserve. Many women handle day-to-day finances but lack knowledge of larger financial matters. It's crucial for both partners to be educated about household finances. Financial literacy can prevent future hardships in case of unexpected events. Women often feel guilty about spending money on themselves. Selfishness in financial decisions can be redefined as self-care. Finding personal hobbies is essential for mental well-being. Aging can bring a sense of freedom and acceptance. Conversations about money should be open and honest, without guilt. In this heartfelt episode, Tara sits down with Karen Johnson, writer and creator of The 21st Century SAHM to talk about that big, emotional question so many moms face: What do I want to be when they grow up? Karen opens up about her own shift from stay-at-home mom to navigating the ups and downs of raising teens, and how that inspired her latest book. They talk about the loneliness that can sneak in during the middle school years, the guilt that seems to tag along with motherhood, and how friendships can be the glue that holds us together. From tech's role in kids' social lives to the quiet moments of self-reflection all moms need, this conversation is a reminder that we're not alone...and that it's okay to dream about what's next for you, even while you're still in the thick of parenting. Dr. Karen Johnson was let go earlier this month as Washington state's first director of the Office of Equity following an internal investigation finding she engaged in “inappropriate conduct” with employees that included micromanaging and “inappropriate or insensitive comments” that included ethnic remarks. While Johnson's last day on the job was May 17, a May 26 investigation report obtained by The Center Square revealed that an internal investigation had been launched in the fall in response to allegations made by employees working in the Office of Financial Management, or OFM, and the Office of Equity, or OOE. The investigation involved interviewing more than a dozen witnesses and 2,649 pages of documentation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/washington-in-focus/support

HeartBeat welcomes Dr. Karen Johnson (known as Dr. J) - just relieved of her duties as the Director of Equity for Washington State (appointed by Governor Inslee). How is it that every Black woman who overachieves, stands up for the right things, challenges the status quo in betterment of everyone, have a two year life cycle in Business? How come it's so predictable? Why do we give Black women - literally - nothing to start an organization, no budget, no resources to build an organization, prosper an organization and once she succeeds through that, then she becomes indispensable? Do you know how many times I have personally witnessed this? Never protected. Defended. Valued. From every angle, Black women face the wrath.
