The past week we Queenslanders have seen some fairly horrific headlines regarding violence toward children. From the Courier Mail headline of a father saying “I'm happy she died” Sunday the 26th of January we saw a headline stating “Woman charged over death of nine-year-old boy in Townsville” But is it any surprise that a nation that accepts the killing of the unborn, all the way up till birth, also has an issue with violence against children? Whether it be withholding lifesaving medicine or physically beating a child to death or taking the life of the unborn in the womb. Murder is murder. What the Bible does tell us is this: children have a special place in God's heart and anyone who harms a child is inviting God's wrath upon himself. When Jesus' disciples tried to keep children from coming to Jesus, He rebuked them and welcomed the children to His side, saying, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14). Then He took the children in His arms and blessed them (verse 16). The Bible promotes child blessing, not child abuse. What is hotspotting, really? In this episode, we sit down with Terry Ryder, the founder of Hotspotting, to explore what the term means and what it should mean for property investors. Terry has spent over four decades researching and writing about Australian residential property, and he’s here to share why chasing short-term predictions is not the way to go. Terry walks us through his approach to identifying true hotspots—places with economic diversity, infrastructure investment, and long-term growth potential. He’s upfront about how the name “hotspotting” can sometimes create misconceptions, with people thinking it’s about quick, short-term wins. As Terry explains, that’s the opposite of his philosophy. For him, it’s all about looking ahead and finding what he calls “second wind markets”—those overlooked locations that are set to thrive over time. We also dive into the challenges of going against the herd mentality. Terry believes most investors make mistakes by following the crowd or reacting to media noise instead of having a solid, long-term strategy. He even shares personal stories about lessons learned from his own investments, including the times he wishes he hadn’t sold too soon. This conversation is packed with Terry’s trademark honesty, practical insights, and a refreshing take on property investing. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to fine-tune your strategy, this episode is a must-listen. Episode Highlights: 00:00 - Introduction 00:56 - Who is Terry Ryder? 01:52 - Terry’s thoughts on the popularity of the term “hotspotting” among buyers’ agents 03:42 - How frequently Terry addresses the misbelief that ‘hotspotting’ is about quick returns 05:07 - Determining time frames and benchmarks for market outperformance 14:30 - What Terry would do if he had to rebuild his portfolio from scratch 16:52 - The role of sales activity in Terry's investment methodology 19:40 - Can fair value outweigh location quality in long-term property investments? 22:06 - Is location more important than property details in your analysis? 28:45 - Are we seeing a shift toward apartments in high-growth locations? 31:03 - Do Terry’s previous hotspots align with market performance? 34:43 - Reports that get the most clicks on Hotspotting 36:19 - What Terry thinks about the rise of data-driven buyers’ agencies 37:39 - What happens after buyers get Terry's top suburb recommendations 44:04 - Terry Ryder’s property dumbo About Our Guest: Terry Ryder is a seasoned researcher and writer with over four decades of expertise in Australian residential property. Over summer, the news cycle slows as much as the days do - and there's more time to mix and mingle on news sites. A few weeks back, the discussion about New Zealanders skipping over the ditch for better opportunities came up again after the Western Australian Government announced it would offer New Zealand tradies $10,000 to make the move. They need more houses in the west and want Kiwis to help build them. $10,000 is some distraction from the fact you'll be working in crazy hot temperatures. I have no issue with New Zealander's wanting to advance their careers, have new experiences or grow as a person by heading off for a new phase of their lives somewhere else. When you live at the bottom of the world, the call to experience the rest of the world is strong. Australia is an obvious place to start. It's different but as familiar as you can get. But as I scrolled my way through the Aussie news websites, I noticed they're dealing with the same challenges as us. While we have similar economic conditions, Australia has been able to weather them better than we have, but it hasn't been a breeze. Last week, the Sydney Morning Herald ran stories on Sydney's housing crisis, and on the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad' increasingly being tapped to help younger people through the cost-of-living crisis. Their trains don't run too often either, their beaches are shut due to pollution and effluent waste, they have race issues, and the weather - 70,000 lightning strikes were reported on Wednesday. Australia's construction industry is suffering like ours, with Melbourne's Herald Sun reporting on a property giant's collapse, that Australia is grappling with a mortgage-led surge in calls to the National Debt Helpline, and there's a shocking rise in hospital workers being attacked. Sound familiar? On Brisbane's Courier Mail there were stories about TikTok stars and NRL players' drink driving charges, snakebites, fire bombings and infrastructure woes. There was some good news though - Brissie debuted on Time Out's Best 50 Cities in the World List for 2025. Credit where credit is due - none of our cities made the list. All-in-all, it was a reminder that the grass may not be much greener on the other side of the ditch. For sure, you can make Australia work to your advantage - just the size of the place means more jobs. But to make the move work, you need to end up in the right place for your circumstances, with the right job and affordable living which allows you to get ahead. As one of my talkback callers said to me during Summer Afternoons - you might be able to have a BBQ any night of the week because you know the weather will be great - but there's more to consider. But if Kiwis decide to make the move, they'll feel right at home. Reading all these papers, I learned the Aussies whine about stuff as much as we do. The Olympic stadium debate has resurfaced in Queensland this week. The editor of The Courier Mail and the Towards The Games Podcast host, Chris Jones, told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Victoria Park, it's nice and open, it's a big greenfield site, you can do all sorts of stuff with different entryways, it's easier to build and then into the future it's easier to work." In this episode, the hosts dive into a variety of thought-provoking topics. Trevor kicks off with a story about Mailchimp banning his email service due to an article critical of Israel, sparking a discussion on the challenges of sharing controversial content. Scott then discusses President Biden's controversial decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, for tax and firearms felonies, comparing it to previous political scandals. Trevor shares an amusing anecdote about visiting an old-school barbershop. The conversation takes a serious turn as they discuss proposed legislation in Queensland to impose mandatory life sentences for children as young as ten, raising concerns about the impact on youth offenders and the justice system. They also satirically critique the Courier Mail's portrayal of youth crime and the LNP's economic recovery efforts. The episode wraps up with a discussion on France's decision not to arrest Netanyahu despite previous statements and a debate on the effectiveness of democracy versus dictatorship, reflecting on historical and current examples of political systems and their impact on society. To financially support the Podcast you can make:a per-episode donation via Patreon or one-off donation via credit card; orone-off or regular donations via Paypal orif you are into Cryptocurrency you can send Satoshis. Next week The Courier Mail will be hosting a 'Future Brisbane' forum to gather insights into what the city and indeed South East Queensland will look like as we head towards 2032. The Courier Mail Editor Chris Jones told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, 'if we don't, as a community, get together and have a proper conversation which leads to a proper plan about legacy, what is it that we are going to look back on in 2040? Jones also discussed the start of Crisafulli's term in government and how he is performing including the decision to reinstate the Bruce Highway Advisory Council.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jonathan Kerr, Chief Growth Officer of Budget Direct observed: “I like complexity. I'm tired, but I like complexity because best navigator wins.”Meanwhile Cath Brands, CMO of B2B pricing specialists FlintFox, raised a topic that has come up a number of times during Compass: growing scepticism towards the effectiveness claims of some of the global digital platforms. She observed: “As a marketer, Facebook is so 1980s in my mind. I'm over it as a platform from an advertising perspective.” However she acknowledged that other Meta brands are still drawing audiences: “The cool kids aren't on Facebook but they are on Instagram.”Michael Crutcher, now a PR executive and a former editor of the Courier Mail said the industry needs to start talking about “the looming war between social media and mainstream media in Australia”, with Meta and potentially Google dropping out of their news funding deals. He added: “And 2025 is going to be nuclear for that.”Meanwhile, Simon Murphy, chief strategy officer for Publicis Worldwide Australia, suggested that social media is benefitting from a decline in public trust in established news outlets. He warned: “There's a crisis of trust and social media definitely plays into that space. They're filling that void.”Kerr, who is one of the biggest buyers of TV advertising in the country also had a warning for the TV networks: “I am annoyed with TV. It's really sad to see the way they can't come together. I always say ‘never be hard to buy'. We're at the point where it's worth coming together to make it so that it's a much more tradeable, understood medium. TV is such a wonderful medium if you want to deliver a brand narrative and a story so I think it would be truly wonderful if they said ‘Let's save this together'.”* Jonathan Kerr, Chief Growth Officer, Budget Direct* Cath Brands, CMO, FlintFox* Michael Crutcher, Director, 55 Comms* Simon Murphy, Global Strategy Director, Publicis* Jennifer Garner, Senior VP of sales, EpsilonUnmade Index flattens as SCA recovery runs out of steamA day after Southern Cross Austereo's share price unexpectedly spiked upwards by 12.6%, it lost 5.2% yesterday, taking it back down to a market capitalisation of $130m.It was a mixed day for Australia's listed media and marketing stocks. He is also an investor, speaker, journalist, and former ESPN SportsCenter anchor and Hollywood correspondent. He has coached thousands of people to improve their lives and performance by adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle. He is the author of The 30-Day No-Alcohol Challenge: Your Simple Guide to Easily Reduce or Quit Alcohol and the creator of Project 90, an online program providing support and coaching for individuals eliminating alcohol from their lives. He is also the host of the Alcohol-Free Lifestyle Podcast, launched in June 2020, with 22 episodes currently featured on iTunes and Spotify. And the James Swanwick Show, with 330 episodes and 2 million downloads. A sleep evangelist, James is the co-founder (with his brother Tristan Swanwick) of the popular health brand Swanwick Sleep, which produces blue light-blocking glasses to improve well-being and sleep quality. The company has sold more than 150,000 pairs of its “Swannies” glasses, which are worn by pro-athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. The product has been featured on the Kelly Ripa Show, the Today Show, and in Forbes and are recommended by some of America's top sleep doctors. In his early career as a journalist, Swanwick was a reporter for Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd, reporting on worldwide news, politics, business, and entertainment for newspapers, including The Courier-Mail and News of the World. His journalistic work has been featured in media, including the New York Times, Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph, The Sun, and The Courier-Mail. From 2010 to 2012, James was an ESPN SportsCenter anchor. Prior to that, he spent eight years working as a Hollywood correspondent, interviewing celebrities like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and world leaders, including former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. In 2015, Forbes Magazine included James in its 25 Professional Networking Experts To Watch. In this episode, James dives into why he decided to stop drinking alcohol. He speaks about all the health benefits he experienced when he quit drinking and how it has changed his life forever. James talks about navigating peer pressure when it comes to alcohol consumption and how easy it can be to live a life without alcohol. Plus, James gives all sorts of tips and tricks on getting a better night's sleep. Tune in as we chat about the importance of gratitude, why you should ditch artificial light at night, and the reasons you need light-blocking glasses for both day and nighttime wear. [00:55] How James Swanwick Helps People Feel Better By Quitting Alcohol In 30 days of not drinking, James lost 13 pounds, slept better, looked better, and got a job on ESPN. After 30 days, James decided to stop drinking altogether; that was 12 years ago. Now that he doesn't drink, he has created a business to help people sleep better and to help people stop drinking. Even a seemingly innocent glass of alcohol each night has detrimental effects on your life. Any amount of alcohol each night is enough to cause brain damage. [07:10] Saying No To Peer Pressure and Alcohol Consumption The social pressure to drink is high. However, it is becoming lower. There is a worldwide movement of people becoming alcohol conscious. Millennials have never drunk less in their entire life. In fact, alcohol has a real image problem at the moment. Remember, 93% of all communication is body language. Go through life being open and relaxed; that way, people don't harass you to drink. [15:05] Do You Struggle With Instant Gratification? Get Rid of Temptations An alcohol buzz is a short-term pleasure. We should look at our life and make long-term choices. Long-term pleasure is so much more pleasurable and rewarding. We all have to sacrifice something; should we sacrifice short-term rewards for long-term enjoyment? James will sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain. The choices that you made six years ago can pay off today. [19:20] Is It Possible To Drink Alcohol and Get A Good Night's Sleep? Any amount of alcohol close to bedtime is going to disrupt your sleep. When you're tired, you tend to seek out sugary foods to give yourself an energy spike. You are better off having alcohol for breakfast than at nighttime. That way, your body can work on getting rid of toxins during the day. There is a direct correlation between alcohol drinking and weight gain. Also, alcohol will destroy energy levels. [23:40] What A Lack of Sleep Is Doing To Your Body and Mind When you are tired, you are miserable. While on the other hand, when you sleep well, everything feels so much better. If you want to feel better, you need to put a premium on your sleep. Don't drink alcohol at night, don't eat before bedtime, and don't look at screens before bedtime. Sleeping above 69 degrees is compromising your sleep. When we have compromised sleep, we are not repairing and restoring. Putting a high focus and premium on optimizing your sleep is critical. [29:30] Ditch Artificial Light and Live By Candlelight During The Night Any artificial light at night compromises your sleep. Light will suppress your body's melatonin release. Blocking artificial light is imperative to ensure you have a good night's sleep. The best thing you can do at night is to live by candlelight. Flame does not suppress your body's melatonin production. [35:40] Why You Need Both Clear Lens Glasses and Orange Lens Glasses Clear lens blue light-blocking glasses will filter blue light and are recommended for daytime computer use. At nighttime, you should switch to orange lens blue light-blocking glasses to ensure you block all the blue light responsible for suppressing melatonin production. Orange lens glasses will help you sleep better for nighttime use. You need both daytime glasses and orange lens glasses. [39:25] Gratitude Changes Your Brain: Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier James will write down twenty things he is grateful for each morning. Science shows that living a life of appreciation instead of expectation will result in lower stress and anxiety levels. It can be challenging to think of 20 things each morning. However, you will realize how many things you must be grateful for. What you feed energy to will expand. AND MUCH MORE! Meet Terry, a property wizard with over four decades of experience. He's saying 2023 is prime time for property because it's booming, regardless of what economists say. When COVID hit, everyone thought property values would sink, but not Terry. He correctly predicted it would turn into a boom. Now, there's a rental crisis. Some are saying property investors are the villains, but Terry says they're Australia's only hope. He adds that the idea of capping rents and scrapping negative gearing is NOT a good plan. He says it'll lead to a rental apocalypse. His advice? 1. Stop taxing investors like crazy.2. Eliminate land taxes and stamp duties. 3. And cut some slack on capital gains tax while you're at it. 2023 is looking like a juicy steak on the grill. Building rates are low. Approval rates are even lower. Even interest rates are coming down. Apartments are in the spotlight, offering low-maintenance living and affordability. So tune into this episode, because Terry and the gang have the latest inside scoop on the property frenzy. It's such a rollercoaster ride of insights and laughs, you'll walk away with a pocket full of property wisdom and a great mood to boot. Home. A word that denotes haven, tranquility and family, but it often transforms into a hell for many. Houses are fascinating, take the cement structure of a home that hides away tales and tragedies, musings and maladies, all while standing upright and resolute. From the outside, a house can cast a certain image and connotations. A tin-roofed hut in a slum for example connotes suffering, ailment, a sick child being nursed by an even sicker mother, wreaking sewage. On the other hand, a grand mansion symbolizes prosperity, wealth, grand dinners and children running around the fireplace and a solemn happiness. But that's not what makes houses fascinating, it is the juxtaposition they offer that does. That slum could very well have a kid studying endlessly under a light bulb while her mother smiles away as she cooks a simple stew. Happiness can easily be found regardless of the exterior. Vis a vis the grand mansion that exudes stature and class can hide behind its walls dark secrets. One such mansion stood on 20 Grass Tree Close, Bridgeman Downs, Queensland Australia. This is the story of its inhabitants and their dark secrets. This is the story of the Singh and Sica family. In 2007 when Kate Kyriacou was a reporter for the Adelaide Advertiser, she took up a story of a missing woman named Glenys Heyward.Glenys, 53, had been due to go on a holiday with her new partner. Instead, she went missing from her hometown of Mount Gambier, towards the Victorian border.Nowadays, Kate is the Courier Mail's Chief Crime Reporter, and has since reported on many harrowing cases. This one, however, is the one that sticks with her the most. In Kate's own words, "when people say "why didn't she just leave?", this case shows why it's a lot more complicated than that".For Support: Lifeline on 13 11 1413 YARN on 13 92 76 (24/7 crisis support phone line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)1800RESPECT: 1800 737 732CREDITS:Host: Meshel Laurie. Brisbane Christian Fellowship sounds like a fairly innocuous name for a church. But the BCF and its network of organisations across Australia have been the subject of a Four Corners investigation and a detailed book, speaking with former members who have numerous stories of families being torn apart as a result of their involvement. Author Morag Zwartz wrote that this ‘church' “is every bit as pernicious and harmful as the Exclusive Brethren.” Full research sources listed here. A lot of us will remember the haunting photo of beautiful 12-year-old Tiahleigh Palmer, who was murdered in 2015. However the path to the dark truth of what happened to Tiahleigh was long and shocking and not resolved until several years later.Tiahleigh was living in foster care in Logan, Queensland with Rick and Julene Thorburn and their sons Trent and Joshua.Kate Kyriacou, the Courier-Mail newspaper's Crime and Courts Editor, has reported extensively on Tiahleigh's death and the tragic full story that emerged. Kate became close with Tiahleigh's mum Cindy Palmer, who waged her own social media efforts to find her daughter in the days after she disappeared. CREDITS:Host: Meshel Laurie.
