Stay connected with us at americangroundradio.com, on Facebook, and Instagram. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for May 1, 2026. We open with a number the media doesn't want you to focus on — 74% of Americans, including a majority of Democrats and independents, agree it is in America's national interest to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. That's according to a Harvard Harris poll, which leans left by about five points. We talk about what it means that three out of four Americans agree on a major national security issue in a country the media tells us is hopelessly divided, why the media's obsession with conflict distorts our understanding of where most Americans actually stand, and why the real division in this country isn't between the American people — it's between the American people and the people who claim to speak for them. In our Top 3 Thing You Need to Know, the 76-day Democrat shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is officially over — Republicans passed a funding bill over total Democrat obstruction, and Democrats got none of the changes they wanted. ICE and Border Patrol are fully funded. Then President Trump signed an executive order creating Trump IRAs — retirement savings accounts available to Americans who can't access them through their employers, with up to $1,000 in federal matching funds for those earning under $35,000 a year. A 25-year-old who invests $165 a month under the program could have $465,000 by retirement. And President Trump has pulled his second Surgeon General nominee and named Dr. Nicole Sapphire — a licensed radiologist and director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering — to the position, after the Senate refused to confirm a nominee who had never completed her medical residency and holds no state medical license. Our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson dig into divorce law and whether the system is biased against fathers — and the Kentucky data that is turning heads. After Kentucky made 50-50 shared custody the legal default in 2018, the state's divorce rate fell roughly 25% over the next several years. We talk about why that makes sense, why the financial and custody certainty of equal sharing may be causing couples to work harder to stay together, what firsthand experience with biased family courts looks like, and why loving your children more than you hate your ex is the only standard that actually protects them. We cover the rhetoric-to-violence pipeline — specifically the logical endpoint of eight to ten years of Democrats and media figures calling President Trump a fascist, a Hitler, a pedophile, a rapist, and an existential threat to democracy. We explain why you cannot spend a decade using that language and then stand at a podium after another assassination attempt saying there's no place for political violence. If you believe what you're saying, the violence is the logical conclusion. And that is exactly the problem. In our Digging Deep segment, we do a comprehensive state-by-state accounting of the redistricting war following the Supreme Court's ruling on racial gerrymandering — mapping out where Republicans and Democrats each stand to gain seats, which states are moving, which might move before this fall, and what the net effect could be on House control. We walk through Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, and a list of Southern states now emboldened by the Supreme Court decision — and on the Democrat side, California, Virginia, and Utah. When you add it all up, Republicans could be looking at a net gain of anywhere from 8 to 26 seats through redistricting alone — in a House currently separated by six seats. We explain who actually started this war — hint: it was Eric Holder and Mark Elias — and why the Supreme Court just changed the rules of the game. We also cover Representative Jamie Raskin's claim that the Supreme Court has been gerrymandered — and explain why that sentence has no meaning, why the Supreme Court is not a political body, what it's actually supposed to do, and what it tells you about where the left is right now that their best argument against a ruling they don't like is a word that doesn't apply. Then we play Fake News Friday — real news, fake news, or really fake news — including John Hinckley Jr. weighing in on the Washington Hilton, Seth Moulton's Nazi submarine comparison to Pete Hegseth, Kamala Harris calling the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps British Redcoats in front of King Charles, and whether President Trump is really considering renaming ICE to the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement so the media will be forced to call them NICE. We also address the UAE's warning that no Iranian arrangements on the Strait of Hormuz can be trusted — and talk about why the UAE may actually benefit from keeping the strait closed, since they have a pipeline that bypasses it entirely. And we close with AJ Haradas at the Boston Marathon — who fell four times after the 26-mile marker and was about to crawl to the finish line when two strangers, Aaron Beggs and Robinson Oliveira, came up on either side and carried him across. Three men who didn't know each other. One finish line. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. Four presidents were killed while in office:• Abraham Lincoln (1865)Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre just days after the Civil War effectively ended. The timing alone makes it feel like history couldn't wait to pivot. • James A. Garfield (1881)Shot by Charles J. Guiteau. Garfield didn't die immediately. He lingered for weeks, and many historians believe poor medical treatment contributed to his death as much as the bullet did. • William McKinley (1901)Shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition. Another delayed death, another moment where medicine lagged behind the crisis. • John F. Kennedy (1963)Shot in Dallas by Lee Harvey Oswald. This is the one that never really settled into history. I WAS THINKING: Who Made Your No Kings Sign? // Meeting your Heroes // Recapping Zac Brown Auction // THIS DAY IN HISTORY - 1981 - President Ronald Reagan shot by a drifter named John Hinckley Jr.
This Day in Legal History: Ronald Reagan Assassination AttemptOn March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt outside the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. The attack was carried out by John Hinckley Jr., who fired multiple shots as the president exited an event. Reagan was seriously wounded but survived after emergency surgery, while others, including Press Secretary James Brady, were also injured. The incident immediately triggered a high-profile federal criminal case against Hinckley. During trial, Hinckley's defense team argued that he was legally insane at the time of the shooting. The jury ultimately returned a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982. This outcome shocked the public and sparked widespread debate about the use and limits of the insanity defense in criminal law.Critics argued that the standard allowed dangerous individuals to avoid accountability, while supporters emphasized the importance of recognizing severe mental illness in legal responsibility. In response, Congress and many states moved to tighten the rules governing insanity defenses. One major reform was the passage of the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984, which made it harder for defendants to succeed with such claims in federal court. The law shifted the burden of proof to defendants and narrowed the definition of legal insanity. The case also influenced how courts evaluate expert psychiatric testimony. Over time, Hinckley remained confined to a psychiatric institution rather than a traditional prison. His gradual release decades later continued to raise legal and ethical questions about mental illness and public safety. This event remains a defining moment in modern criminal law because it reshaped how courts balance mental health and criminal responsibility.Bank of America has agreed to pay $72.5 million to settle a proposed class action lawsuit alleging it helped facilitate Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking activities. The agreement, filed for preliminary approval in New York federal court, does not include any admission of wrongdoing by the bank. The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, described the settlement as a meaningful recovery for survivors. The proposed class includes women and girls who were abused by Epstein or his associates, including those who received compensation tied to sexual activity. Payments to class members will vary based on factors such as the severity and duration of abuse and any cooperation with investigations.Doe alleged that Bank of America ignored warning signs and allowed suspicious financial transactions linked to Epstein's operations, including accounts opened in her name despite red flags. The bank denied facilitating any illegal conduct but stated the settlement allows it to resolve the matter and provide closure. The plaintiff's attorneys may seek up to 30% of the settlement fund in fees. The court had previously dismissed claims against another defendant, Bank of New York Mellon, and narrowed the case against Bank of America. The judge also rejected an effort by the bank to pause proceedings while related government matters were clarified. The plaintiff and her legal team weighed the risks of trial, including the possibility of a lengthy appeals process that could delay compensation for survivors. As part of the settlement process, a fund administrator will determine individual awards using specific criteria tied to each claimant's experience. The case highlights ongoing legal efforts to hold financial institutions accountable for their potential role in enabling trafficking networks.BofA Will Pay $72.5M In Deal Ending Epstein Ties Allegations - Law360Four major law firms—Jenner & Block LLP, WilmerHale, Susman Godfrey LLP, and Perkins Coie LLP—have asked the D.C. Circuit to uphold lower court rulings that invalidated executive orders issued by Donald Trump targeting them. The firms argue the orders were unconstitutional, claiming they violated the First Amendment and other protections by restricting their ability to practice law. The measures included suspending security clearances, limiting access to federal buildings, and penalizing the firms for their clients and legal work. The firms contend the orders were retaliatory, pointing to Trump's criticism of their pro bono work and connections to investigations involving him. They argue the government cannot punish lawyers for representing certain clients or expressing particular viewpoints. Each firm emphasized that the orders interfere with core legal principles, including the right to counsel, free association, and access to the courts. The U.S. Department of Justice initially sought to drop its appeal of the lower court decisions but quickly reversed course and is now defending the executive orders. The firms highlighted this reversal as evidence that the orders are legally weak. They also argue that the government has failed to meaningfully dispute claims that the orders were motivated by retaliation. The dispute is now before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, with oral arguments scheduled for May. The outcome could have significant implications for executive power and the independence of the legal profession.Firms Targeted By Trump Urge DC Circ. To Uphold EO Rulings - Law360Law firms targeted by Trump ask court to uphold rulings blocking executive orders | ReutersA federal judge reduced the prison sentence of Elizabeth Holmes by one year, lowering her term from just over 11 years after applying updated federal sentencing guidelines. Holmes had requested a two-year reduction, but the court granted only a partial decrease despite opposition from prosecutors. The judge found that although her fraud caused approximately $452 million in investor losses, prosecutors failed to show that any individual victim suffered “substantial financial hardship,” which is required under the revised guidelines. The court emphasized that financial harm must be evaluated relative to each victim's wealth, noting that large losses do not automatically qualify as substantial hardship for wealthy investors. Because the government did not provide specific evidence of such harm, Holmes qualified for a reduced sentence as a nonviolent, first-time offender. However, the judge limited the reduction to one year to maintain deterrence and reflect the seriousness of her conduct.Holmes was convicted in 2022 of defrauding investors in Theranos, the blood-testing startup she led alongside Ramesh Balwani. While her conviction included four counts of investor fraud, she was acquitted or not convicted on other charges. She began serving her sentence in 2023.Prosecutors argued against reducing her sentence, citing the scale of the losses, her limited restitution payments, and concerns about potential future misconduct. Holmes countered that investors knowingly took risks and were not financially devastated. The judge ultimately agreed that the legal standard for “substantial financial hardship” was not met.Elizabeth Holmes Gets 11-Year Prison Sentence Cut By A Year - Law360 UK This is a public episode. Before I interviewed John, or his co-author Jason Norman, I emailed them to let them know that the purpose of my interview was not to re-try the incident of March 30, 1981, nor was this a podcast with a political agenda. (If you read the book, politics didn't play a part in the assassination attempt on President Reagan, anyway) All I asked for was a conversation about the book, and nothing more. Both of them were kind enough to grant me that. Obviously, those of you who have listened long enough know that I'm no lawyer, psychologist, or political pundit. But this is what I do. I've always said the stories I bring to this podcast will likely appeal to different emotions. This is one of those episodes that will likely provoke different reactions from different people. I'm proud to say that I've always made the decisions about what goes into my podcast, and one thing I keep out is hate. I didn't hear any hate in John's voice, nor in his words, and if there was, this episode wouldn't exist. I guarantee you that. I respect your opinions as listeners of this podcast if you feel otherwise about this interview, but having read "Who I Really Am" and spoken to the authors, I was able to learn more about this brief, horrific incident, and the remorse of the man who put it into motion. Failed Ronald Reagan Assassin John Hinckley Jr. Believes He Turned Jodie Foster Into a LesbianAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
On March 30, 1981, the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, is just two months into his presidency when he attends a speaking engagement at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. As the president exits the building and makes his way towards his limousine, six shots ring out. Members of the public and the Secret Service pounce on a 25-year-old man wielding a handgun nearby. In the affray, the president has been struck, along with three others. All recover, but when the motivation for the attack is revealed to be not about politics, but instead an obsession with a Hollywood star, the questions around the would-be assassin deepen. In episode 386, Jac and Alexis detail the bizarre attempted assassination of President Reagan by John Hinckley Jr, and ponder whether someone who acts on their obsession in such an extreme way can -or should - ever really go on to live a life without scrutiny.
As shots rang out on March 30, 1981 outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., President Ronald Reagan and three others lie seriously wounded. Just two months after Reagan was sworn in as the 40th president, John Hinckley Jr. shocked the world because of his movie star obsession. What followed was chaos. America learned of the deep psychosis that led to Hinckley's obsession with actress Jodie Foster, and how, in his mind, he did it all for her. His trial gripped the nation. Many expected a guilty verdict, but his acquittal on grounds of insanity sparked outrage and forever changed how the law viewed mental illness. Now, for the first time, Hinckley tells his own story. He takes us through an early life of unfulfilled dreams, a music career and college degree that slipped away, and the descent into a mind overcome by delusion. He recounts the years spent in confinement at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the slow climb toward recovery, and the people who helped him find his way back.A life defined by a single, horrific act becomes something more: a story of mental illness, redemption, and the long road to understanding the man behind one of America's most infamous moments. As much as I appreciated Jason coming on the show for an interview, my apologies to you for not hearing John Hinckley Jr's perspectives on his life, up to, including, and after March of 1981, after the attempted Reagan assassination.. Hopefully ,we will hear from him in the future to revisit his book. I assure you, this is certainly a unique memoir; not one that is seeking sympathy, but one that details, in brutal honesty, a dark path with mental illness. After being nominated for an Academy Award for her role as a child prostitute in the 1976 film Taxi Driver, Jodi Foster gave up acting to go to college. It was there that her Oscar-nominated performance made her the target of a deranged stalker. That stalker, John Hinckley Jr., was obsessed with Jodie Foster. He wrote her letters and called her on the phone. He was convinced she needed to be saved and that he was the one to do it. And in 1981, in Washington, D.C., Jodie Foster was the unknowing inspiration for and motive behind Hinckley's attempted assassination of a sitting American President. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including stalking and suicide. Howard Stern's hack radio prank, the MTV VMA's, Charlie Steen is now just a boring author, Britney Spears worst dance video, and artist John Hinckley Jr. The Detroit Lions loss has everybody bummed. The Buffalo Bills somehow defeated the Baltimore Ravens after being down 15 points in the 4th quarter. Another dildo hit an NFL field yesterday. The NFL punishes an unruly fan. Howard 100: Howard Stern opened with a wacky Andy Cohen bit to start his comeback. Drew and BranDon made the Stern montage! Stern totally loves Alex Cooper now. Howard is not a fan of podcasts or Ari Shaffir. The MTV Video Music Awards went down last night. Ozzy Osbourne was honored. GMA can't get enough of Charlie Sheen. He totally nailed Corey Haim. We miss the exciting Charlie Sheen, not the new boring author. Britney Spears is dancing in public bathrooms. Her house is covered in multiple dog turds. Unknown Number on Netflix remains must-watch. Brother Wease calls it quits at 78. Turks and Caicos has a major murder problem. Drew was once groomed in Jamaica. Drew is hit by more AI slop. The Phillies Karen is still big news on GMA. Elite University students are heading south. John Hinckley Jr. has a new painting to purchase. Did Bryan Kohberger Kill to Impress His Professor FBI Profiler Robin Dreeke Breaks It Down In this gripping episode, retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke dives into one of the most bizarre and controversial theories in the Bryan Kohberger case: the idea that Kohberger may have committed the murders of four University of Idaho students to impress his former professor, Dr. Katherine Ramsland. This theory, reported by journalist Howard Blum, has drawn comparisons to John Hinckley Jr.'s attempted assassination of President Reagan to impress actress Jodie Foster. But is it psychologically plausible? Dreeke, who once led the FBI's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, brings his deep expertise in motive, delusion, and high-risk behavioral patterns to break down the facts. Could Kohberger's academic obsession with serial killers have blurred the line between research and reality? Did he see his alleged crime as a twisted form of validation from a mentor he idolized? We explore how common—or rare—this type of motive actually is, what kind of psychological markers are typically present, and what kind of evidence investigators would need to verify such a theory in court. Dreeke also explains why the absence of hard proof doesn't necessarily mean the theory is wrong—it just makes it legally dangerous to rely on it without corroboration. Whether you believe the "impress the professor" theory or not, Dreeke helps cut through the noise to reveal what behaviors actually matter in assessing this case. This is a must-watch for anyone trying to understand the psychology behind one of the most confusing and disturbing alleged motives in recent true crime history.
