Abby and Patrick are joined by writer and artist Lily Scherlis for a provocative reflection on the ideological subtexts, historical contexts, and real-world value of some of our moment's most bandied-about concepts and terms. Beginning with her 2023 essay for Parapraxis, “Boundary Issues: How Boundaries became the Rule for Mental Health – and Everything Else,” the interview spotlights Scherlis's nuanced yet relentless interrogation of how the vocabularies of research psychology have proliferated across popular culture and have become ubiquitous in the workplace, in bestsellers, on social media, and in our most intimate interactions. What exactly are “boundaries,” when did having (or not having) them become such an issue, and how does their invocation function? Touching on themes and topics across Scherlis's body of work, from CBT and DBT to the legacy of Dale Carnegie and beyond, the conversation builds to a consideration of the case of attachment theory. Unpacking the history, key concepts, and findings of this interdisciplinary field of study, Abby, Patrick, and Lily explore how its terms and categories have become so central to a cottage industry of online quizzes and therapeutic interventions. How do ideas of self-improvement and self-help relate to economic shifts in modes of production, material realities of employment precarity, and our felt sense of being together – and being alienated? What work do these terms do in the abstract, and what work are we as subjects expected to do in learning and using them? And how can we square our skepticism vis-à-vis such models and vocabularies with the traction they can give us when it comes to understanding ourselves, tolerating distress, navigating a difficult world, potentially changing our circumstances, and connecting with one another?Selected texts cited:Lily Scherlis, “Boundary Issues: How Boundaries became the Rule for Mental Health – and Everything Else”Lily Scherlis, “Skill Issues: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Its Discontents”Lily Scherlis, “Going Soft: Future Proofing the American Worker”Danielle Carr, “Don't Be So Attached to Attachment Theory”Robert Karen, Becoming Attached: First Relationships and How They Shape Our Ability to LoveHeidi Keller. The Myth of Attachment Theory A Critical Understanding for Multicultural SocietiesRuth O'Shaughnessy, Rudi Dallos, Katherine Berry, and Karen Bateson. Attachment Theory: The BasicsA podcast about psychoanalysis, politics, pop culture, and the ways we suffer now. Inside the house, Gareth's love of music takes centre stage, and his heroes are some of the biggest names in rock, but Gareth is also quite clearly a football man through and through. An exceptional player and a skilled and talented man manager, who's proud to have worked with and developed some of the most prolific players in the game today. This is a fascinating insight into the tightrope that everyone in football management needs to tread, and once the relaxed chat around the bar and the trophy room has concluded, Gareth has one final surprise for Prutts!

# 162 - Vital Leadership Lessons Learned on the Battlefield - with Paul Ainsworth, Lincoln Institute

Profitable Farmer

Where have you learned leadership?  On the farm? In a day job? Inherited perhaps?  For most, NONE have learned the vital art and science of leadership.  It is a learned skill. One we can all commit to and master.   One we all need to be successful in life and business, and in succeeding in the pursuit of a family farm that can transcend generations…  It is a privilege to introduce Paul Ainsworth, Managing Partner of Lincoln Institute to you in this episode - one that speaks deeply to the heart of leadership, resilience, and the power of community.  Over 15 years, and after a decorated career in the Australian Army, Paul has helped shape leaders in the veterinary and agricultural industries. A graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College Duntroon, Paul served as an Infantry Officer with international deployments across five foreign countries, culminating in a role as a military observer in the Middle East.   His leadership journey continued beyond the Army, first as the inaugural Director of ALDI Foods in Australia and then, as CEO and Board Chairman of Australia's fastest-growing company in the energy sector.   Now, as the Founding Principal of the Lincoln Institute, Paul is dedicated to equipping veterinary and agricultural professionals with the leadership, management, and communication skills they need to thrive.   Leadership is more than just making decisions. It's about connection. It's about knowing when to step forward and when to step back. It's about building a team that isn't just technically strong but also aligned, empowered, and accountable.  Here Are Some of The Key Leadership Lessons from This Episode:  How self-aware are you as a leader? How you think you come across isn't always how you do. Where might there be a gap between your intent and your impact?    Who's in your corner? Isolation is the enemy—whether you're a vet, a farmer, or a business owner. Who do you lean on? How are you building a strong support network?    Are you pushing yourself and your team to grow? Real learning happens outside the comfort zone. Where are you playing it too safe?    Are you empowering or micromanaging? Move from telling to coaching. Teach the standard, then trust your people to own it.    Do your people know what's expected—before there's a problem? The best way to avoid hard conversations is to set clear expectations from the start.     Are you creating clarity or confusion? Strong teams don't need coddling—they need to know where they stand, what success looks like, and how to get there.  We are delighted that our FOA Platinum Mastermind & Alumni Members have access to the Lincoln Institute Emerging Leaders Programs. For more information about FOA's programs and our connection with Lincoln, book a Complimentary Coaching Call here.  Paul and his team at Lincoln Institute have been working alongside farm owners, veterinarians, and business leaders for years—helping them not just lead, but lead well.   This is a conversation about what really makes a difference in leadership—the moments that test us, the decisions that define us.  A sincere thanks to Paul for joining us in this conversation. Your knowledge, wisdom and insights are so valuable and transferrable.     Sincerely,     Jeremy Hutchings and The Farm Owners Academy Team

Harnessing Biofactory Capability of B Cells to Deliver Therapeutic Proteins with Sean Ainsworth Immusoft TRANSCRIPT

Sean Ainsworth, the CEO of Immusoft, is developing novel cell therapies by programming B cells to produce therapeutic proteins, including antibodies, enzymes, signaling proteins, and other protein types. This autologous cell therapy has shown promising results in early clinical trials for enzyme replacement therapies for rare lysosomal storage disorders. Some advantages of this approach are the ability to re-dose patients as necessary and to cross the blood-brain barrier. Initial findings are opening the door to other indications such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and obesity.   Sean explains, "We're developing B cells as modalities for therapeutic protein delivery. B cells have an exceptional ability to produce and release therapeutic proteins into the bloodstream. So naturally, they're producing and releasing antibodies, which are a type of protein. And so we're harnessing that biofactory capability of these B cells, programming them to manufacture our therapeutic protein. The idea is that once we've done that, we deliver the cells back to the patient. They naturally will go to the bone marrow and engraft, and once they've engrafted, they can live for many years, potentially decades. The two key things about the B cell are A, it's a natural biofactory, and B, they naturally engraft in the bone marrow." "We got started with antibodies that we would programmed initially against HIV. So, it was a natural starting point for B cells, given that they produce antibodies. We were just coaxing them to produce very specific antibodies. And then the idea came about that if they can produce antibodies, we could probably enable them to produce other therapeutic protein types. So we began to experiment with enzymes, signaling proteins, and a number of different protein types. We found that under the right conditions, indeed, we could enable these B cells to produce a broad array of different protein types. But that ultimately means we have applications across a multitude of different therapeutic indications as well."   #Immusoft #CART #CellTherapy #BCells #RareDisease #LysosomalStorageDisorders  immusoft.com Listen to the podcast here

But that ultimately means we have applications across a multitude of different therapeutic indications as well."   #Immusoft #CART #CellTherapy #BCells #RareDisease #LysosomalStorageDisorders  immusoft.com Download the transcript here

No athlete wishes for an injury, but when Kurt Ainsworth's bad shoulder derailed his professional pitching career, it created a big opportunity. Kurt and two partners started a wooden bat company in his backyard, bringing their intimate knowledge of baseball to every bat they sold. Soon, big-name players like Sammy Sosa were swinging them, but Kurt knew they had to expand to aluminum bats to reach the wider field of non-professional players. The company faced a near death experience when the NCAA decertified its bats for being too powerful, but eventually regained its footing. In 2013, Marucci Sports was acquired for over half a billion dollars; and next year, Marucci will slide past Louisville Slugger to become the official bats of Major League Baseball.
