This Way Out's own collection of programs dating back to 1988 is already becoming a valuable tool for LGBTQ+ researchers and educators, even as the extensive process of data sorting and cataloging is getting underway. Project lead and Overnight Productions (Inc,) CEO Brian DeShazor discusses the next steps and the importance of preserving original materials with University of North Texas queer media professor Dr. Tanya D. Zuk. And in NewsWrap: most queer Catholic groups greet Pope Leo XIV with cautious optimism, the U.S. Supreme Court lifts injunctions to allow the Trump administration's wholesale discharge of transgender service members to go forward, Governor Janet Mills stops the U.S. Department of Agriculture's threats to de-fund school lunches due to Maine's inclusion of trans student athletes, Pennsylvania State Police and other officers storm Pittsburgh's venerable P Town bar during a star-studded drag show for a “compliance check,” and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Tanya Kane-Parry and John Dyer V (produced by Brian DeShazor). In this episode of Audio Talks, host Oisin Lunny engages with audio preservation experts David Seubert and Gerald Seligman to discuss the critical importance of preserving master recordings and audio heritage. They explore the devastating impact of the 2008 Universal Fire at Universal Studios, which destroyed countless irreplaceable recordings, and the broader implications for music history and cultural memory. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by both public institutions and commercial record labels in preserving audio, the fragility of audio heritage, the role of technology in restoration efforts, and how listeners can contribute to preserving sound history.

How often do you talk to someone you disagree with—not in a Twitter pile on, but face to face? With Donald Trump's inauguration fast approaching (plus holidays full of opinionated relatives), Jon sits down with Dave Isay, the founder of StoryCorps, to talk about the healing power of conversation. StoryCorps is a segment on NPR's Morning Edition, a podcast and the largest single archive of personal narratives in the world. Since 2016, it's also facilitated conversations between Republicans and Democrats as part of its One Small Step Initiative, and the results are surprisingly heartwarming. Jon and Dave talk about strategies to overcome political polarization, what we learn when we talk to strangers, and how to have productive conversations with people who disagree with you.

Brooks Robinson was a third baseman who played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955 to 1977. Nicknamed "the Human Vacuum Cleaner", "Mr. Hoover", and "Mr. Oriole", he is generally considered to have been the greatest defensive third baseman in major league history. An 18-time All-Star, he won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, setting a record later tied by Jim Kaat and broken by Greg Maddux. His 2,870 career games at third base not only exceeded the closest player by nearly 700 games when he retired, but also remain the most games by any player in major league history at a single position. His 23 seasons spent with a single team set a major league record since matched only by Carl Yastrzemski. He passed away on 9/26/23. This interview took place on 12/12/09/
Today we're rerunning an episode from 2018 featuring two interviews with Harper's Magazine's former New Books columnist, Lidija Haas, and with our current Easy Chair columnist Rachel Kushner. Listen in advance of our event tonight at the Center for Fiction, “What Happened to Gen X?,” which will see Harper's editor Christopher Beha in conversation with his generational peers Rachel Kushner and Ethan Hawke as they explore the question at the center of our September issue. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee—and Brett Kavanaugh's irate response—was an excruciating bit of political theater, complete with righteous speeches from both sides of the aisle. (It also proved to be not much more than spectacle, as Kavanaugh was sworn in as an associate justice earlier this week.) Nevertheless, the event illustrated how we are socialized to perform and understand gender, race, and class. In this episode, New Books columnist Lidija Haas joined Harper's web editor Violet Lucca to discuss a handful of recent publications that deal with these issues: Lacy M. Johnson's The Reckonings, Rebecca Traister's Good and Mad, and Kristen M. Ghoddsee's Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism. In the second segment, Rachel Kushner, the author of The Mars Room and Telex From Cuba joined Lucca to discuss an essay she wrote that was included in the October 2018 issue's Readings section, pulled from her memories of the late Nineties New York art world. We are kicking off the new year with a new series called "Audio Archive Interviews" that will drop on the first Saturday of each month (as we don't post new episodes the first week). We will feature an audio only interview from a given year with hopefully some refreshing perspectives for Paul fans. For our first one, we featured an interview Paul gave to the BBC on 14th December 1983). In this interview Paul gives a track by track breakdown of his recently (October) released album Pipes of Peace. (Which in 2023 will be 40 years old, scary). Interviews like this are gold for Macca fans because the music and the songs were fresh and Paul openly speaks about all of the tracks and how they came about. Lots of Jackson discussion as well. We hope you enjoy this new series as much as we did discovering these. Happy New Year again!
All 7 seasons will be available to listen to soon - all the great guests, funny banter sessions, and the rest of it - including our sad, pathetic first season when we even less idea what we were doing than now....
