Steve's Required Viewing pick, the brand-new over-the-top action thriller Fight or Flight, asks the question: is this Josh Hartnett's “John Wick on a plane,” or just another movie where a disgraced federal agent ingests toad venom and kills contract killers with a chainsaw? Then Ron and John try to explain the adrenaline rush of watching Tom Cruise climb around on a biplane in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. And lastly, if you like your Reckonings final, how about your Destinations? Final Destination: Bloodlines resuscitates that durable franchise with a new entry focusing on a family who comes down with a bad case of death. John has a few thoughts.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Karen E Osborne, author of the book Justice for Emerson. Karen is an award-winning and Amazon Kindle best-selling author of five suspense novels–Reckonings (award-winning family saga/suspense), Tangled Lies (award-winning murder mystery), Getting It Right (recognized by Essence Magazine as a Best Read), True Grace, (award-winning historical fiction inspired by her grandmother, set in 1924 Harlem, NY), and Justice for Emerson, a dual timeline murder mystery.   Karen believes in generosity and giving back. She hosts a weekly video podcast What Are You Reading? What Are You Writing? supporting fellow authors. She is on the board of directors of Easterseals Florida helping the differently abled, is an Elder in her church, volunteers for several professional organizations supporting nonprofits and feeds the hungry and unhoused every week. Native New Yorkers living in Florida, Karen and her husband, Robert, have two grown children and three grandsons.   In my book review, I stated Justice for Emerson is a wonderful mystery with a side of romance and a dash of historical fiction - and I simply loved this book! Without a doubt, I am a sucker for books that cross genres. Plus, it had a dual timeline and more than one POV.   The main character, Aria, loves to serve. Her career puts her on the frontlines battling homelessness, addiction, and hunger. She's a go-getter, but she's not perfect. She has a chip on her shoulder - she hates her diminutive stature and worries if others see her as a capable leader - AND she's still grieving the loss of her husband - which means she's more than conflicted about the attention of two very different and very handsome men.   Things come to a head when she finds Emerson, a volunteer and Vietnam Vet who struggles with addiction, shot in the basement of her non-profit. To make matters worse, she sees the killer, and he threatens her and everyone she loves.   The descriptions of those living in their cars tore at my heart. The romance stirred my heart. And the twists and turns kept my heart racing. In this episode, we're discussing plants, their exuberant multispecies sexualities and what we can learn from them, how botany is always interlinked with its cultural and historic context including colonialism, and an interdisciplinary approach can make one a better scientist. Host Susan Mathews is in conversation with Professor Banu Subramaniam, the Luella LaMer Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Wellesley College. Trained as a plant evolutionary biologist, Banu engages the feminist studies of science in the practices of experimental biology and is most recently the author of Botany of Empire: Plant Worlds and the Scientific Legacies of Colonialism. The book is about plant worlds and the legacies of colonialism. It focuses on three subfields: plant taxonomy, plant reproductive biology, and plant biogeography. Plant taxonomy is a critical node of colonial botany and its enduring afterlives. Plant reproductive biology chronicles how the imaginaries of gender and race under colonial sexuality were imposed on plants. Finally, understanding plant biogeography through invasion biology centres questions of what belongs, or doesn't, when and where.

Stephanie Lepp is a video artist and producer whose work focuses on bringing together different viewpoints to arrive at a perspective that goes beyond “common ground” and emerges as a true integration, or synthesis. She was on the podcast in July 2022 to talk about a project called Deep Reckonings. In it, she considered the cases of public figures who'd responded to personal controversy in less-than-ideal ways and reimagined responses that would have conveyed genuine learning. Now she's back with a new video series, Faces of X, which illustrates an argument using a single performer to act out the three parts of the thesis, antithesis, synthesis schematic. Those performers include Buck Angel, Liv Boeree, Magatte Wade, and herself. In this conversation, I talk with Stephanie about why it's so hard to check your confirmation bias (even — and maybe even especially — when you pride yourself on being able to do so), the difference between synthesis and “both sidesism,” and why she's optimistic about the future of public discourse about complicated issues. GUEST BIO Stephanie Lepp is the founder of Synthesis Media, a production studio devoted to integrating perspectives into a bigger picture. In 2022, she debuted Reckonings, a narrative podcast that explores how we change our hearts and minds, and Deep Reckonings, a series of explicitly-marked deepfake videos that imagine morally courageous versions of our public figures. An allegorical tale of alienation, loneliness, and repulsion, the book follows a Palestinian woman who's recently fulfilled her family's dream of moving to America. In New York, working as a middle school teacher, she finds herself disillusioned with the filth of the city and its poverty. She's beset with a deep unease at her own body and haunted by memories, especially that of a coin—a shekel—she swallowed on a car ride as a child just moments before a horrible accident. Estranged from the few people she knows in the city, her behavior becomes increasingly unhinged and bizarre in ways that complicate standard stories of immigration, and instead imagine the path of a character who sees through America's promise and realizes she has nothing to lose. Also, Nell Irvin Painter, author of I Just Keep Talking, returns to recommend three books and one magazine: The Plague Edition of Konch Magazine edited by Ishmael Reed and Tennessee Reed's; Black Art and Aesthetics: Relationalities, Interiorities, Reckonings edited by Michael Kelly and Monique Roelofs; James: a Novel by Percival Everett; and Changing My Mind: Occasional Essays by Zadie Smith.

In this special easter episode, we look at  the curious intersections of a Goddess of the Dawn, the turning point of the Christian calendar and cosmovision, and the way in which time itself was reconceptualized in early medieval Europe, with reverberations and implications for today.  This is an audio essay, not a conversation, and it picks up on threads from some of our earlier work around circular time, the transition into Christianity in Europe, ecclesiastical history, and our ongoing inquiry into the eco-spiritualities necessary to both interpret, respond to, and find faithfulness in the midst of a changing climate.Article Version: The Goddess of the Dawn and Reckonings with Time(s)Written by Sara Jolena Wolcott: Lady Pancakes the Rabbit and related Spring Metaphors… Between metaphors and reality: suggestions for Seasonal InquiryReferences mentioned in this podcast include: Bede, The Reckoning of TimeCS Lewis - The Discarded Image, an introduction to medieval and renaissance literatureGoddess of the Dawn podcast by FairfolkGeorge Musser - The Paradox of Time: Why it can't stop, and mustThe ReMembering Course -  Registrations are accepted through April 8. Today we're rerunning an episode from 2018 featuring two interviews with Harper's Magazine's former New Books columnist, Lidija Haas, and with our current Easy Chair columnist Rachel Kushner. Listen in advance of our event tonight at the Center for Fiction, “What Happened to Gen X?,” which will see Harper's editor Christopher Beha in conversation with his generational peers Rachel Kushner and Ethan Hawke as they explore the question at the center of our September issue. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee—and Brett Kavanaugh's irate response—was an excruciating bit of political theater, complete with righteous speeches from both sides of the aisle. (It also proved to be not much more than spectacle, as Kavanaugh was sworn in as an associate justice earlier this week.) Nevertheless, the event illustrated how we are socialized to perform and understand gender, race, and class. In this episode, New Books columnist Lidija Haas joined Harper's web editor Violet Lucca to discuss a handful of recent publications that deal with these issues: Lacy M. Johnson's The Reckonings, Rebecca Traister's Good and Mad, and Kristen M. Ghoddsee's Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism. In the second segment, Rachel Kushner, the author of The Mars Room and Telex From Cuba joined Lucca to discuss an essay she wrote that was included in the October 2018 issue's Readings section, pulled from her memories of the late Nineties New York art world.
