THE CONVOFor a lot of Jews, the Holocaust seems to be the defining aspect of peoples Jewishness. In today's episode, I am joined by three Jews, each living in different generations. Through their stories, relationships, beliefs, etc, I hope to explore the role the Holocaust plays in one's Jewish identity and how (if at all) this has changed throughout generations of American Jews. After my conversations, it is clear to me that despite the temporally distant nature of the Holocaust, the event is still very relevant to many Jewish Americans. THE CONVOIn today's episode, I talk about spaces, in particular public spaces, thinking about what they are, what they do, and who they are really for. This episode is inspired by my course this semester called "Queer-Feminist-Antiracism and Design for the Future" at MIT. I was tasked with the assignment of coming up with a project centering around intersectional design operating under queer-feminist-antiracist frameworks in some capacity. The question that I (attempt) to answer: How are public spaces reflecting individual community needs, grounded in ethno-racial, socio-historical, geographical contexts? I use The Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center as a specific space I am familiar with to discuss large conversations surrounding public spaces. Marglucy aka Maggie aka the face of @wowmelanin fuels her days with homemade chapati, lots of 6lack and Khalid, hours on facetime with the people she cares about, and stunning makeovers. THE CONVOWelcome back to Ineffable Goodness. I took some time off to reflect on my goals for the podcast and the platform I want it to be. It felt and in part still feel like it is trivial posting episodes given the numerous pandemics we are swimming in. THE CONVOThis episode is brought to you by the wisdom of my grandma, Claire Hertz. At 86, my grandma works as a therapist in New York City, thriving off nightly sessions with Rachel Maddow, nibbles of Equal Exchange chocolate, and a thorough daily read of the NY Times. Today, my grandma and I talk about aging from three perspectives: mind, body, and soul. We chat about what it’s like having an older body while living in a society that views youth and beauty synonymously, learning how to “age well” as a feminist (and what that means), and so much more. THE CONVOHello lovely people. Today's episode features scholar, educator, and youth advocate, Bianca J. Baldridge. A sociologist of education, youth, and race, Bianca explores educational policy through her role as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Bianca’s research critiques and productively explores socio-political contexts of community-based youth work and afterschool education. Bianca’s work recently translated into an incredible book—which you should all read— titled, Reclaiming Community: Race and the Uncertain Future of Youth Work. On this episode we talk about after school overall and how schooling shifts in this time of COVID-19. We also discuss the importance of proximity and hear a bit about Bianca's experience with schooling and education growing up. As somebody who recently considers themselves a youth worker, I am incredibly drawn to the work Bianca does to challenge conventional narratives operating under a framework of deficit-based learning, finding ways to teach and encourage people to seek out the various assets present in every single community. University Campus Director of the University of Connecticut’s new campus in downtown Hartford, Mark continuously learns the complexities of urban education and what his role in it can and should look like. Prior to this role, Mark worked as a professor of Latin American and Latinx history, with a concentration in the history of the Mexico/US border and the Mexican diaspora. THE CONVOThis is my personal favorite episode yet, featuring educator, story-teller, and D.C.-based artist, Cierra Kaler-Jones. Cierra is currently a PhD candidate, focusing— in her own words— on her research on how we can make education more equitable, hoping to amplify stories of women of color that are often erased by dominant, deficit-based narratives. Featured in popular outlets ranging from the Education Post to Midnight and Indigo to Ted Talks, Kaler-Jones is internationally recognized for her commitment to social justice. Cierra wears many different hats as a fitness instructor, using movement to encourage people to take care of their minds, bodies, and souls. Today's conversation centers around common threads within Cierra’s work: intersectional, inclusive wellness in its various forms and capacities. She chats about her favorite authors, how she views movement as a form of resistance, and how she navigates the world as a storyteller, a listener, a question-asker, and so much more. *Spoiler* the U.S.'s most common new year's resolution is (drumroll please) 'lose weight and get fit.' THE CONVOIn today’s first solo episode (meaning one where I and only I talk, apologies in advance), I will be sharing nine of my 2019 favorites ranging from the movie “Parasite” to the pure gold that is Oatly’s oat milk, and my thoughts on intuitive eating. While my 2019 favorites and my thoughts on intuitive eating seem completely disconnected, they are, in fact, not. Many times a new year means a new you. This often manifests itself in the go-to diet culture: cut-out sugar, carbs, gluten, and everything that tastes good, gives us fuel, and allows us to function. Intuitive eating is a subversive approach to this bullsh*t we are bombarded with. Specifically, I discuss the five steps that help me strengthen my relationship with food and awareness with my body and move farther away from the transactional act that food often becomes.
