Aya Brea is the only one who is able to stop the mitochondria menace as we take a deep dive into another dual-topic discussion. First we will talk about the impact that was left behind with all three Parasite Eve entries as these games brought "Horror RPG elements" into the forefront. There's also a lot of plot to go over with these energy infused abominations. Next we will talk about the generalization of Survival Horror RPG mechanics and if they invoke tension upon the player when it comes to grinding, overlevelling and pure challenge. Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. We finally wanted to tackle a video game film which is considered an outlier; one which doesn't seem to be that well known outside of the Venn diagram of people who like video games, people who like Japanese horror, and people who have watched the Parasite Eve movie. That's right, we decided to watch the movie version of Parasite Eve from 1997.The following is a reduced version of the full show notes, which you can find here.Content WarningDue to the nature of the movie we talk about in this episode, we'd recommend that you don't listen to this one with little ones around. Whilst we don't go into the detail, this movie does hit you in the feels hard. So be prepared for that, as we talk about the movie. There's also talk about nudity-without-any-actual-nudity (you'll understand why when we get to it) towards the end of the discussion on the film; just to prepare you for that. Please listen responsiblyShow NotesWe're backAND WITH A SPECIAL INTRODUCTION FROM ME: RUSSELL COMPUTECH RODRIGUEZ GENERATION SIX POINT FOUR... indeed. And this time we wanted to cover the movie version of Parasite Eve. One thing to note about this movie is that the relationship it has with the games - as of right now: Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve II, and The 3rd Birthday. The relationship is has is that it's based on a book by Hideaki Sena, and so are the games. Except that the games are more of a "what if" continuation from about the halfway point of the book. And that the movie only has the basic plot from the book.So all three things (book, movie, and games) can be thought of as three separate universes. In fact, we've already covered the book on this website way back in 2017. So we'd recommend giving that post a quick look-see, too.The mitochondria take control and become Instagram influencers - that's the modern day equivalent"- SquidgeThoughts Going InSquidge is a big fan of the action RPG PlayStation title which was made, based on the book. The movie and the game entered pre-production at roughly the same time, and the teams behind both were unaware of each other. Indeed, Hideaki Sena was unaware of the game series until the early 2000s.The production company behind the movie (Fuji TV) started production of the movie in January 1997, and was done 8 weeks later. The entire movie had a total cost of (in 1997 money) $900,000 - for context, Titanic had a budge of $200 million (again in 1997 money).Interestingly, considering that it had a sizable budget, it was only released to Japanese theatres for one week. After which it went to VHS, and was exported to the West - starting the J-Horror craze of the late 90s and early 2000s - alongside Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge. And it was just under a year after the movie came out that the first game was released. 1998's Parasite Eve for PlayStation must have been in development from shortly before the movie started pre-production, which bears out quite well because a demo was shown off at E3 in 1997.As mentioned above, the movie and the games take two slightly different paths: where the movie is an attempt at retelling the story. The video game was a direct sequel to the book, with the main character (Aya Brea) being the daughter of Mariko Anzai - who is a junior high schooler in both the book and the movie. And Hidekai Sena - the author of the book - didn't know about the games until the early 2000s.The CastBecause it might prove difficult to keep tabs on who is who, here is a list of the most important characters:  Dr. Toshiaki Nagashima; he is the protagonist  Kiyomi Nagashima; this is Toshiaki's wife  Sachiko Asakura; Toshiaki's lab assistant  Mariko Anzai; a junior high school girl who needs a kidney transplant  Takatsugu Yoshizumi (aka Dr. Curtains) is the surgeon who will perform the kidney transplant  Whilst not a character, per se, Mitochondrial Eve will feature heavily in this movie The PlotHere's a 10,000 ft view of the "plot", as we see it:  A strange collage and a console boot sound  Bad CGI bird, is bad  Some science in the form of a lecture, all about Mitochondria  Meanwhile it's laundry day  A lesson on bacteria, for children who think that bacteria are yucky But they love snails, which are equally as yucky And Mariko flings herself into a swimming pool Dark synth and snail beheading Playboy style candid images of Mitochondria Kiyomi plays "chase me" and a faraway kiss because reasons And Toshiaki forgets their first anniversary Ominous line is ominous Meanwhile there is science happening in the Bat Cave  But that's not how you use a microscope  Sensei and wise older person stroke's his beard- Squidge Kiyomi drives home "Do you think the Mitochondria have their own agenda"  Something terrible happens  There's a Bunsen burner and everything  STAHP! The science that you're doing is killing her via remote control- Jay  Kiyomi has a horrific traffic accident, and it hits you in the feels  The transplant committee break every rule in the book  "I'll give you the kidney, if you give me her liver"  Hollywood cliche 437: it only rains when it's sad  Flashback: it's Christmas, yo!  "Kiyomi" can be read "Christmas eve", and they meet on Christmas Eve! See the full show notes for a description of how this is possible. Dr. Curtains gets the kidney  There's an awful tie  Toshiaki goes full mad scientist  Resident Evil-like music  Mariko is uphappy  A bloodied handprint We are the snails There's so much water around in this hospital  Tummy bulges "Simba!" in the samples Asakura is possessed by the Mitochondrial goop Shenanigans are afoot Eve is all over the floor Suddenly Kiyomi is back... from the dead Nudity-without-any-actual-nudity Tea and cake... and revelations!  Asakura gives a TED talk Western actors with AMAZING. ACTING. TALENT. It starts raining on the stage An old man is set on fire  Mariko is flung about by some unspoken force Everyone rushes to the hospital Is it The Blob or is it Eve? Nurse flambé and Morticia Addams'ing their way through a hospital A security system from the 1960s  It's curtains for Dr. Curtains"- Jay Roof party! Divergence from the book Love saves the day The roof, the roof. The roof is having an abnormal atmospheric chemical reaction- SquidgeMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Parasite Eve games? Welcome back to The PlayStation All-Stars Ultimate Roster Showdown! Remember PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale? Despite selling over 1 million copies, DLC support was canceled early on, and the game has been largely forgotten as it's online servers are now closing down. However, there are many PlayStation fans that are hoping for a remaster or even sequel one day, and it is from that love and passion that we created this. Each week, on our official Twitter, we will have a new poll in which we pit two PlayStation icons against each other. Alongside each poll will be an article on the site in which two writers make their case for each of the characters. And finally, every four matchups will get a podcast episode (in this feed) to recap the winners and theorize how they'd fit into the game. After 20 weeks and match ups, we'll have one big podcast to discuss all of the winners and our hopes and dreams for a sequel. This week, Graydon and Emmett go over each of the first 4 matchups of the Showdown and give some constellation prices to the losers. Curious as to who the first winners are? Well, check below for a list, with each of their articles and polls linked below! Match 1: Juan from Guacamelee beat Dart from Legend of Dragoon Match 2: Aya Brea from Parasite Eve lost to Gabe Logan from Syphon Filter Match 3: Chie from Persona 4 washed Claptrap from Borderlands Match 4: Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn vs. Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series

Nude Clan: A Video Game Podcast | Part of the [Nude]Clan gaming network

This week, the clan dives into Parasite Eve II. Here's the writeup: Parasite Eve 2 is an action role-playing survival game released for the PlayStation. The game was developed by Square Enix, and published in 1999 in Japan and the US, and in 2000 everywhere else. The game has sold just over a million copies as of February 2004, and was released on the PlayStation Network August 23, 2011. The music was composed by Naoshi Mizuta, and arranged by Hiroshi Nakajima. The soundtrack took a year and a half to compose, and Mizuta was given a lot of freedom. Story: This game opens up peaceful enough. We meet up with Aya Brea, og protagonist from the first game, who is now an FBI member working for an elite squad known as MIST (Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team) Lol. She’s currently dispatched on a mission in LA, where there have been reports of NMC sightings (Neo Mitochondrial Creatures). We start this bad boy out investigating the Akropolis tower, which is now home to NMC’s, and a bunch of dead swat members. We eventually run into No. 9, who is some sort of humanoid Neo-mitochondrial creature. This beastman ends up destroying the tower, but not before Aya and her friend Rupert are rescued in a police helicopter. We then head to Dryfield, another location infested by freakish beasts, including a fucking Elder Camel that totally reminds me of the grand master from the Kill Bill series. We meet up with a survivor named Mr. Douglas, naturally, and his loyal beast Flint. Douglas is sort of our informer for the next little bit. We also rescue Kyle Madigan, a PI claiming to be on a similar mission. He tells tale of a “Shelter” nearby that may contain the answers we’re looking for. But not before we fight craiggers himself! Oh, and of course, we get a sweet shower scene. Aya and Kyle set out to find the shelter through an abandoned mine. This is where the Elder Camel finally shows his face. After we defeat this epicly bearded beast, we find a secret entrance to The Shelter. Here we find out that the AANMC’s are a result of genetic engineering to create superior life forms. We also find that these beasts were created using her DNA. Oh, also the “Star Wars” esque waste beast battle… Jesus Christ the FUCKING CAMERA ANGLE!!!!!!asdfasdfasd We then find the fourth area, called Neo-Ark. This area was created as sort of a Jurassic Park-esque showcase for the ANMC’s. We meet up with Kyle, and rescue a little girl that was controlling the NMC’s. This turns out to be Eve… How? I don’t fucking know. But we soon find out that Eve was created using her DNA, thus sort of making her Aya’s daughter. But I mean, that also means that we’ve spent this whole game killing all of her other children, so whatever. Fine. I’ll accept this shit. Aya is later attacked by a huge group of golum beasts, but is rescued by the US Marines. Ameeericaaaaaa!!!!!! We later get a couple gifts from Mr. Douglas, and track down Eve to a giant room containing a cocoon. They’re trying to stuff Eve into it, and Kyle turns on No. 9 and kills him. We then get a cutscene where Bill Clinton wipes Dryfield off the map, and displaces the fuck out of our party. And now we fight the vag n balls beast. The last NMC in the game is pretty brutal, since he harnesses the power of the sun in his shaft. Once we successfully geld this motherfucker, we move to the final fight. Eve. Again. She transforms into a beast that sort of resembles the second to last form of Eve in the first game. Once we beat this super OP boss, we get a few cutscenes. The good, and canon, ending features Aya adopting Eve as her sister with help from Mist. We then see a cutscene where Pierce gives them two tickets to the American Natural History Museum in NY, where we run into Kyle Madigan again.   Gameplay: This game plays like a standard survival horror game. Tank controls. Also, cuntish camera angles. There isn’t an active time bar that governs actions, and the battles take place in real time. They removed the stupid Range Dome feature that the first game came with, which gives users to engage from further away. All enemies are in plain view, unless they’re the BDSM ninjas, which allows the player to avoid fights when they want. We get a chance to customize our weapons similarly to the first game, but it’s fairly limited. Armor lets us add extra items slots, which dictate what items can be used during combat. We also have a few different elements to our PE abilities: fire, wind, water, and earth. The game features a NG+ that offers you bonus items; not that you’ll ever want to experience this fucker again.   Enjoy the NUDE!

We’re back with our first ever listener request episode! This week we take a look at Parasite Eve from 1998. The first ever Sqauresoft game to get an M rating, Parasite Eve is an attempt to blend action, horror, and RPG elements in an urban setting. And, as far as we’re concerned, it worked. Parasite Eve is the story of ace detective Aya Brea as she attempts to save the city of New York from a para-natural menace known simply as ‘Eve’. Spontaneous combustion, mutant rodents, nefarious mad scientists, and a dark past all stand in Aya’s way. Good thing she has a grenade launcher! Fans of our Resident Evil episode will be pleased to hear that wildly inaccurate science factors into this game, too! Also maybe some dinosaurs? We hope you enjoy this jumbo sized episode on Parasite Eve.
