Among the streets and sewers of Racoon City, Ben and Tao flee the relentless Nemesis, hunt an elusive vaccine, stop an unstoppable sociopath, and split up to look for survivors in Capcom’s riveting zombie horror remake, Resident Evil 3. They discuss the gimmick of the invulnerable enemy, the controversial redesign of classic characters for new generations and modern sensibilities, the role of partially locked map design to mitigate backtracking, the fine line between B-movie hyperbole and cult success, and how even originality of script and narrative can play second fiddle to good fun and near-flawless execution. Story spoilers abound. Seriously, don’t listen to this if you’re worried about spoilers, play the game first. Otherwise, come get some!Content Warning: PEGI 15. A subtle blend of lateral thinking and extreme violence. (No, not like ‘It’s a Knockout!’)Clarifications:The original soundtrack to Resident Evil 3 is by multiple composers, including Masami Ueda, Azusa Kato, Ryo Koike, Takumi Saito, Kota Suzuki, Takayasu Sodeoka, Saori Maeda, Jeff Broadbent, Zhenlan Kang. It’s available on SteamAs Tao suspected, there is an accompanying series of novels. Wikipedia says the first Resident Evil novel was Hiroyuki Ariga's novella Biohazard: The Beginning, published in 1997 as a portion of the book The True Story of Biohazard. The story serves as a prelude to the original Resident Evil, in which Chris investigates the disappearance of his missing friend, Billy Rabbitson.Ben says this is a continuation of the events of Resident Evil 2. It would be more accurate to say they happen in an overlapping time frame. Parts of Resident Evil 3 even take place before Resident Evil 2, though this concludes later in time. This story takes place in a mostly deserted Raccoon City, where a skeleton crew has been left to pack up what's left of the facility and anyone else in the city who was too poor to afford moving out. We soon learn why The Umbrella Corp is moving out of Raccoon city, and everyone gets more vaccinated zombies than they bargained for. Review Having seen a few of the other Resident Evil movies, I was dreading this watch. While the original movie is fun enough for what it is, the rest of these movies are the definition of what has been wrong with Hollywood for the last 20 years. Huge explosions with overcomplicated storylines that amount to the writers version of hacking a computer by violently mashing the keyboard incoherently. But Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City reboots this series down to it's barebones. This was directed by Johannes Roberts, who also did 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and 47 Meters Down and he did what video game lovers have asked countless directors to do for over 25 years - he made a direct video game to film adaptation of the first three resident evil games.  Is it the best thing I've ever seen? No. Is it fun with some genuinely spooky and disturbing moments? Yep!  Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City takes a tired, fucked out franchise and returns it to it's honest-to-God roots, and does it with some fun. The first two acts are genuinely interesting and scary, and had me bought in. The last act devolves into stereotypical big monster battles and explosions, but even some of that was pretty fun. Overall, this took the most disgustingly bad franchise I can think of and gave it a new lease on life. While it did lean heavily on the games for inspiration and iconic imagery, I think that's a step in the right direction. Because what are we seeing a Resident Evil movie for if not to relive those moments in the games that made us gasp? Go ahead and real our blog by Leah on how Jill Valentine got screwed.  Watch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon CityBuy it on AmazonClick here to Rent or Buy Score 6/10

#ResidentEvil #FilmReview #Podcast Resident Evil is an action-horror film series based on the Japanese video game franchise of the same name by Capcom. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1998. In 2001, Screen Gems acquired distribution rights and hired Paul W. S. Anderson as writer and director for Resident Evil (2002). Anderson continued as writer and producer for Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), and returned as the director for Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). The first six films follow Alice (Milla Jovovich), a character created for the films. Alice is a former security specialist and covert operative who battles the Umbrella Corporation, whose bioweapons have triggered a zombie apocalypse. Characters from the games appear, including Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Carlos Olivera, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Barry Burton and antagonists Albert Wesker, the head of Umbrella Corporation, and James Marcus, Umbrella's top virologist. In 2021, a reboot film (the seventh in the film series) was made, titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Despite all the installments receiving generally negative reviews from critics, the Resident Evil film series has grossed $1.2bn to date and became the highest-grossing film series based on a video game in 2012. In this regard the series was overtaken at some point in the mid-2010s by the Pokémon film series, at $1.8bn globally as of 2021. It is also the highest-grossing zombie film series, and was the highest-grossing horror film series as of 2017. 25 Jahre ist es nun her, dass Capcom seine Kult-Survival-Horror-Serie Resident Evil das erste Mal auf uns los ließ – damals noch auf PC, Sega Saturn und Playstation 1. Und jetzt also Teil 8. Folge direkt herunterladen

This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those.Andrew Dickinson (i.e. oddment84, aka "that guy who creates a bunch of podcasts" ) returns for a discussion on Resident Evil Apocalypse. We had that much to say about the 2004 action-horror (which is heavy on the over-the-top action, and incredibly light on the horror) that we've had to split it into two parts. The following is a reduced version of the full show notes, which you can find here.Content WarningDue to the nature of the movie we talk about in this episode, we'd recommend that you don't listen to this one with little ones around. Please listen responsiblyShow NotesWe have another video game movie discussion episode this week, as we tackle the 2004 train-wreck that is Resident Evil Apocalypse. Unlike when we talked about the first Resident Evil movie - here's a link to that - we knew that we'd need help in discussing this movie. Luckily, AndrewD had some time off between his podcasts, radio showdid you know that the DreamCast Years podcast has joined RadioSega?and his Dreamcast Years Two book project, and wanted to discuss the second Resident Evil movie with us.As with, pretty much, every episode we've put out so far this year, this one was recorded a little in advancein fact, it was actually recorded before the episode on the first Resident Evil movie went out What's great about this show is that we often get updates on Squidgey's life goals:My foot hasn't fallen off, so I take that as a win- SquidgeAnd, to be fair, there's not much you can say to that really.Thoughts Going InSquidge immediately came up with a better name for the movie:Resident Evil Chocapocalypse- Squidgewhich, we can all agree, would be a better movie. Andrew mentions:Do you remember those little Cadbury's machines you used to get at Christmas, that had the little, tiny things of Cadbury's chocolate, and you'd put 2p in and it would spit them out?- AndrewDyou'll have to click through to the full show notes to see an example of what he meansFor each 10p piece you put into this, it would dispense a small piece of Cadbury's chocolate. That is, if you had loaded the pieces of chocolate into the machine beforehand - which was the ONLY flaw in this device's design -Imagine being peppered with chocolates while watching a movie. Wouldn't that be great?....Anyway, so Resident Evil Apocalypse came out in 2004, and Jay hadn't seen it since it came out. But before we dove into the sequel, we talked about the George A. Romero script, which was commissioned but never produced. Reading through it, you get a feeling that Romero had played the original game and had a handle on the story and characters. The three of us felt that the fact that the previous film had so little to do with the franchise meant that Paul W. S. Anderson was forced to put as many references to the series into his sequel as possible. And clearly, he hated having to have Alice alongside Jill Valentine in this film. The Plot - Part OneHere's a 10,000 ft view of the "plot", as we see it Flashbacks to set up the backstory Is it Matt or Max? shooty shooty, gun gun. Lots of punchy zombie- AndrewD "2 Weeks earlier", opening the hive, and portable CD players Dr. Ashford loses his daughter, because his car is hit, but she's alive Jill "Bad-Ass" Valentine murders a bunch of people in the middle of a police station, and no one bats an eyelid it's how bad-assing work's, right?- AndrewD Captain Switzerland is sent by Umbrella to run the mop-up operation Running up several flights of stairs in heels Carlos saves the day... or not Leg fu for the win Bluetooth earpieces Totally not the Berlin Wall Surplus and more! Dr. Ashford has frowny-face glasses, but hacks the system Recreating the intro from Resident Evil 3 Activating Nemesis through science and gratuitous bar charts Help me, Alice Kenobi. You're my only hope Entering the church That person I know... maybe they're not a zombie They're in a church, right? Why didn't they just grab a holy hand grenade?- Squidge Jill's badassery makes her forget her training An action scene which Jay describes as: Alice dealing with the lickers is so far over the top, it's practically in lower orbit- JayLeg fu saves the day, and donkey kicks for the winMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Resident Evil Movies? If so, what makes them fun to watch? What's with the leg-fu usage? Just how over the top is the church scene? Why did they spend so long making Jill out to be a badass, if they were going to replace her with Alice?psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. In this first episode of season 2 of Nick Nack Goes To The Movies, to ring in 2021, I once again wen't back to my roots, with zombie things! With the news of the 2021 Resident Evil movie concluding principal shooting, I though it was time to dive into my bin on DVD's and Blu-Rays to dig out the Paul W.S. Anderson 6 movie Resident Evil Series, to date the most successful video game film adaptation of all time. Now, these are up and down in quality, but for the most part, they are a fun time to turn your brain off and get a little dare I say, Brain Dead! Obviously I am kicking 2021 off with a dumb zombie joke, what better way to ring in the new year with Milla Jovovich, Iain Glen, Ali Larter, and most importantly, even if briefly, Wentworth Miller, that Prison Break episode will be upon on eventually. But for now, let's get cheesy one liners, slo-mo backflips, shooting guns while jumping out of helicopters, and yes, roundhouse kicking zombies in the face. And our first list of the new year, ranking these zombie flicks, as only yours truly can do. So hit me up on social, let me know, at either @NickNackMovies and @NickNack_IC on both Instagram and Twitter. What is your favorite Resi movie, game, or zombie movie overall? The best takes will be shared on next week's episode!
