Before The Conjuring and Paranormal Activity, there was a VHS tape that terrified Japan, and later, the world. In this episode of So, You Like Horror?, the Remake vs. Original series continues with Ringu (1998) and its American counterpart, The Ring (2002). We examine how Hideo Nakata's minimalist, folklore-infused story of Sadako and a cursed videotape reshaped Japanese horror through quiet dread and psychological tension. Then we look at how Gore Verbinski's Western adaptation reframed those fears for early-2000s audiences, turning superstition into investigation and amplifying its visual atmosphere through cold, haunting imagery. The conversation explores each film's approach to technology, isolation, motherhood, and the concept of the “curse” itself, spiritual versus viral, suggestion versus spectacle. Through comparisons of style, theme, and cultural context, we ask the central question: Does The Ring enhance or dilute the terror of Ringu?Thank you, everyone, for your support. For our final chilling installment of Spooky Szn, we revisit the American horror film that fundamentally changed the genre in the early 2000s: Gore Verbinski's "The Ring (2002)."This isn't a slasher or a jump-scare festival; it's a cold, slow-burn mystery wrapped in a shroud of eerie, washed-out green and blue cinematography. We praise the masterful sense of looming dread created by the ticking seven-day clock and Naomi Watts' compelling performance as the investigative journalist Rachel Keller. "The Ring" stands out for its success in translating the chilling atmosphere of Japanese horror (Ringu) for a Western audience and its brilliant use of mundane technology—VCRs, telephones, and static-filled TVs—as conduits for supernatural terror. However, the hosts also tackle the film's legacy of techno-fear and its dark, nihilistic ending. We discuss the film's lasting cultural impact, which paved the way for a wave of J-horror remakes, and the truly unsettling nature of Samara's curse. The ultimate question we pose is the chilling moral dilemma the movie leaves us with: Is it better to accept your fate, or doom a stranger to save your child?Tune in for a deep dive into the horror classic that made a whole generation terrified of their own television sets. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram and TikTok to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. Day 24 – Episode 174: The Ring (2002)On Day 24 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, Ryan and I revisit Gore Verbinski's The Ring (2002) — the film that defined early 2000s horror and made us all afraid of our TVs. We dive into how influential this American remake of Ringu truly was, from its haunting aesthetic to its eerie use of analog technology. Naomi Watts delivers a powerhouse performance as Rachel Keller, grounding the supernatural mystery in raw emotion and fear. We also try to wrap our heads around how exactly Samara manages to cross over through VHS tapes and landlines — a mystery that still chills us decades later.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:
GROS morceau aujourd'hui. MONSTER PARTY REVISITS THE ERA OF ROLLERBLADING, BEANIE BABIES, THE MACARENA… AND TERROR!!!! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD honor the last part of a decade that brought us so many seminal films. If you thought our previous '90s HORROR episode was “da bomb,” you're guaranteed to go nuclear when you hear… '90s HORROR VOL. 2!!! The 1990s were an exciting and innovative time for horror films, with the latter half of the decade boasting some downright game-changers. With THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, we saw the explosion of the found footage genre that is still popular to this day, and the Japanese showed us the dangers of sitting too close to the TV with RINGU! If that didn't change your horror movie game enough, David Fincher gave us the ultimate worst-case mystery box scenario in SEVEN, Wes Craven made horror meta with SCREAM, and M. Night Shyamalan peaked early with THE SIXTH SENSE. But we're not even close to this episode's EVENT HORIZON! We'll also look at a creepy ice cream vendor (aren't they all?), a castle freak, some self-improvement cannibals, a Rubik's Cube of death, an evil genie, Chucky's better half, a Hardrock Cafe for vampires, and so much more! Too bad all of it was lost in the devastation caused by Y2K. Joining us for this second dose of '90s chills is an award-winning friend of the show, and really, the only guest for this subject. He was the editor in chief of the legendary FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine, the genius behind the blog, IT CAME FROM..., the writer/director/producer of the IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS longform documentary series, as well as the '80s sci-fi documentary IN SEARCH OF TOMORROW. His latest project is the shockingly episode appropriate mega doc, IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS: 1995-1999! Honestly, what were the odds?! Please welcome back the always scintillating… DAVID WEINER!! '90 HORROR LIVES! AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, TALK TO THE SEVERED HAND!

Nič manj izvrstna ni Emily Blunt v vlogi stereotipne in nerazumevajoče Dawn, njune skupne scene pa – vsaj v prvi polovici filma – še dodatno prizemljijo lika in predvsem Kerrove težave.

This week we dive into the cursed videotape phenomenon with "The Ring" remake by Gore Verbinski. Spike watched too many Ring movies and fried his brain, but it is all worth it to tell you about how this series evolves and changes over its various copies. We discuss the background to the film, and how it ended up being remade by Dreamworks. We also discuss the aftermath of "The Ring" being successful, and what movies came out of it. After analyzing the plot, we each pair "The Ring" with another movie for a pair of double bills!Thank you so much for listening! Sprawczość Donalda Tuska jest coraz mniejsza i to widać – twierdzi prof. Andrzej Nowak. Według niego energia prezydenta Karola Nawrockiego będzie spychała rząd do defensywy.Prof. Andrzej Nowak, historyk i doradca prezydenta, w rozmowie w Poranku Radia Wnet ocenił pierwsze działania Karola Nawrockiego na stanowisku głowy państwa. To duży dystans.

Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you. If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit. Time to start that new watchlist! All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! Lara and Carey finish out their current era of SUBS with the second book of Samuel, but first they talk Mickey Rourke's bizarre homophobia against JoJo Siwa in the Big Brother UK house, an update in Virginia Giuffre's Ringu journey, and a Beverly Hills apartment building locked in battle with a resident spreading poop-laden terrorism. Back in Samuel, King David mounts his quest against Jerusalem to take the crown of Israel for himself. Whether alienating his wife Michal with sober raving and stealing wives from soldiers, David does his best to stay in the Lord's good favor. But his greatest match comes in the form his Fabio-haired son Absalom, who schemes to steal his father's throne and turn him into the biggest cuck mankind has ever seen. Hardware (1990), Death Machine (1994), and Event Horizon (1997) The 1990s are often thought of as a decade of dread for horror fans—not because of what was on the screen, but because nothing good supposedly came out of it. Or at least, that's the typical response. But as we continue down the path to Discover the Horror, we're starting to realize that what we remember about the past isn't always accurate—whether it's based on our own memories or what we were told. When you really dig into those ten years, there's actually a lot of great stuff that came out—even just here in the U.S. And when you look beyond to international horror, it gets even better. Browse through the list and you're bound to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.” In this episode, we decided to tackle that decade and picked three titles that, as it turns out, share some very similar themes. And we think all three are well worth watching. Films mentioned in this episode: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Batman Returns (1992), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Boneyard (1991), Braindead (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Candyman (1992), Cronos (1992), Day of the Dead (1985), Death Machine (1994), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Descent (2005), Dr. Giggles (1992), Dust Devil (1992), Event Horizon (1997), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Freeway (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Godzilla (1998), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 (1998), Hardware (1990), Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), High Tension (2003), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of Illusion (1995), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mimic (1997), Misery (1990), The Mummy (1999), Nightbreed (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Princess Bride (1987), Reign of Fire (2002), The Resurrected (1991), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Return to Splatter Farm (2020), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Thing (1982), Valentine (2001), Warning Sign (1985), Willow (1988)
Hollywood decided to break the curse by making a copy, and that's just what they did when they remade Ringu in 2002 for western audiences. But does this adaptation add more to the title than "The"? Actually, yes! In a Millennia Macabre first, we watched something good for a change. Unfortunately, we only have 7 days to relish it.
VHS tapes, wells, and terrifying children, oh my! Shaun Duke and Daniel Haeusser join forces to tackle 1998's Ringu! Together, they explore the film's legacy, its approach to the ghostly and ghastly, the role of technology in terror, and so much more. Thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy the episode! It's the final Thursday of November and that can only mean one thing...Systembolaget Julöl episode. We try five different Jul Öl beers released from Systembolaget at the beginning of November to help you understand which beers should be a part of your Christmas celebrations. This we picked a lot of milds, dark ales and bocks. Since Stefan always picks the beers based off the label, he got an unintended theme. This year we have a dark Mild from Beer Baron's called Mild Winter, a spiced ale from Bustad Brewing Co called Tomteluva, a schwarzbier from Beerium called Down the Chimney 2024, a julbock from Ringu and a Winterwarmer Gingerbread strong mild ale from Österlenbryggarna. It's a very merry Christmas time! #beer #craftbeer #drinks #julöl #christmasbeers #mildale #schwarzbier #julbock #strongmildale
