Host Cody Cook sits down with Jacob Winograd, an LCI colleague and host of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, as Jacob revisits one of his earlier episodes on the question: "what is biblical anarchy?"The conversation kicks off with a discussion on the evolution of anarchist thought, from left anarchists like Joseph Proudhon to 20th-century figures like Murray Rothbard, offering a comprehensive understanding of how anarchists approach issues like property rights, self-ownership, and capitalism.Moving into the biblical justification for anarchy, Cody and Jacob debate the nature of governance during the period of the judges in Israel and whether it can be considered an anarchist society. They also explore the New Testament perspective, focusing on Romans 12 and 13, to tease out whether Christians are called to participate in or separate from civil governance.Tune in to this thought-provoking conversation that promises to enlighten and challenge your perspective on governance from a biblical anarchy viewpoint.Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com ★ Support this podcast ★
In this episode of the Biblical Anarchy Podcast, Jacob revisits the pilot episode and foundational themes of the show, offering a refined and expanded exploration of biblical anarchy. He clarifies what "biblical anarchy" means by emphasizing the primacy of Scripture in Christian political thought, arguing that all authority must be evaluated against God's word. He traces the historical development of anarchist thought from Proudhon to Rothbard and explains how these ideas intersect with biblical principles. Diving into passages like 1 Samuel 8 and Romans 13, Jacob challenges common interpretations that justify centralized human authority, arguing instead that the Bible warns against monopoly governance and calls for a decentralized, just approach to human authority.Jacob also engages in a theological critique of the state, demonstrating how its coercive nature contradicts biblical principles of justice and proportionality. He addresses key objections, including the role of taxation and Jesus' statement about rendering unto Caesar, showing how these issues align with a Christian libertarian perspective. Through careful exegesis and historical analysis, this episode serves as a refreshed introduction to the podcast's mission—challenging statist assumptions and calling Christians to align their views on governance with the teachings of Christ.Full Episode Show Notes at BiblicalAnarchyPodcast.comThe Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute.Audio Production by Podsworth Media.

In this episode, I present a conversation that I had with Jacob Winograd, host of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, about Biblical Inerrancy. This took place on his previous show, the Daniel 3 podcast. As I clarified my positions on Protestantism, the creeds, and inerrancy in the previous episode (146, available everywhere), I thought that this conversation would help highlight my position on Biblical inerrancy and further clarify my previous statements on the subject. Jacob and I both believe in the authority of scripture, and we discuss why he prefers to retain the language of ‘inerrancy' while I prefer the terms ‘authority' and ‘reliability'. Our perspectives on Biblical interpretation are remarkably similar, and I hope that this helps demonstrate how a conversation between two Christians that have similar views can lead to a fruitful and productive dialogue which sheds light on important theological issues. In this episode I revisit three of my most controversial episodes (5, 19, and 57) that discussed the creeds of the Christian church and Biblical inerrancy. Most of the negative feedback from my show has been generated by these two episodes, and I wanted to revisit them one more time to clear up any potential misunderstandings. First, I explain how the common denominator among all protestants is the belief in the authority of scripture and why that should shape our understanding of the creeds and Biblical inerrancy. I then explain how I agree with every statement of the Apostle's Creed and discuss the importance of creeds in general while showing that the creeds are incomplete because, understandably, there are many important aspects of the Biblical witness that can't be fit into a short summary statement of important beliefs. I discuss how creedalism can sometimes screen out the teachings of Jesus, Christian ethics, and discipleship generally because they address mostly doctrinal statements, and that we need to understand the creeds within the larger framework of scripture so we don't neglect other essential aspects of our faith. I then turn once again to Biblical inerrancy, showing how it has been misappropriated by fundamentalists, progressives, and skeptics and used in ways that undermine the authority of scripture and cause interpreters to unjustifiably impose modern ideas about science and history back into the text. I also explain how defenders of the Chicago Statement, such as R.C. Sproul, have a hermeneutical method that is nearly identical to my own, and why retaining the language of ‘inerrancy' can work if it is carefully defined. I then explain why I prefer the terms ‘authority' and ‘reliability' over ‘inerrancy' while acknowledging that many people I know who hold to ‘inerrancy' are in complete agreement with me on the way in which the Bible ought to be interpreted. I hope this episode helps clarify my position on these important issues! In this episode of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, host Jacob Winograd sits down with economist and libertarian theorist Bob Murphy for an enlightening discussion on a wide range of topics. Bob, a senior fellow at the Mises Institute and host of the 'Bob Murphy Show,' offers his insights on the philosophical and practical foundations of libertarianism. The conversation covers recent debates between prominent libertarians and critiques from opposing viewpoints, delving into the role of the non-aggression principle, the importance of community and church in maintaining societal norms, and the limitations of state interventions in addressing moral and economic issues.A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to exploring the benefits of free market solutions over state-run systems, particularly in the context of licensing and regulation. Bob argues that many perceived failures of the free market are, in fact, caused by state interference, which often leads to monopolies and stifles innovation. He explains how a decentralized, competitive approach to licensing could improve quality and accountability in various industries, reducing the risks associated with monopolistic state control. This episode provides a thought-provoking exploration of how free market principles can be applied to create more ethical and efficient societal structures. The Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute. In this episode of Biblical Anarchy, we confront the complexities of Romans 13 and the nature of governing authorities. We'll also scrutinize the presuppositions associated with state power and the conduct of Christians under different types of governance.Acknowledging the diverse Christian perspectives on this issue, we'll juxtapose our own interpretations with those from other Christian perspectives, including other libertarian and anarchist viewpoints. Specifically, I talk about Stephen Rose of the Anarcho-Christian podcast and some interactions we've had over our different interpretations. We delve into the significance of good conduct in relation to state authority and challenge the conflation of governance with the state apparatus. Our discussion goes beyond a mere exploration of the text to question the effectiveness of political power in upholding righteousness. With an eye towards the history of nations and the calling of our faith, we'll encourage a focus on Jesus Christ as the ultimate hope and leader. Join us as we search for a deeper understanding of governance, authority, and our place as Christians in this world. The Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute. In this episode of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, Jacob sits down to talk with Gregory Baus, one of the hosts of the Reformed Libertarians Podcast. The focus was on the confessionally Reformed "political resistance" or prescriptive-office view of Romans 13 (although the interpretation and its logical argumentation doesn't exclusively depend upon being confessionally reformed). The discussion delved into the biblical interpretation regarding civil governance ordained by God, diverging from the prevalent providential view often associated with the state's role. The episode referenced crucial articles and discussions, including a Reformed Libertarians article available. It explored the writings of early church fathers like Tertullian and Chrysostom, providing insights into the prescriptive nature of the higher powers ordained by God. The prescriptive-office view emphasizes the delineation between God's providential ordination and a required task within an office. It highlighted the task of civil governance specified in verses 3 and 4 of Romans 13: being a force against wrongdoing while not being a terror to good works. The discussion addressed objections regarding God's sovereignty, the nature of rulers, taxation, and the prescription of punishment within the context of civil crimes versus broader sin, and more. The prescriptive or non-statist interpretation is multi-faceted, and considers the evolution of covenants and the limitations of applying Old Testament concepts to contemporary governance. The conversation challenged traditional perspectives, examining the compatibility of just civil authority with Christian principles, contrasted with the historical norms and inherent nature of the State (beyond the confines of a specific historical empire). This thought-provoking episode challenges conventional interpretations of Romans 13, offering a fresh perspective on the relationship between civil governance and biblical principles. 00:00 Start 00:31 Introduction 03:44 Summary of the view A prescriptive, not providential, ordination concerning an office, so submission is with respect to the administration of civil justice (and resistance to unjust rulers and unjust laws is not forbidden) 10:29 First Objection Doesn't Romans 13 require us to submit to the state (or other de facto rulers) because God uses evil to punish sin and accomplish His plans? No, this confuses general providence and/or 'natural' consequences for God's special symbolic (and temporary) old covenant arrangement. Now that Christ has accomplished salvation and established the new covenant, the only judgment will be the coming Final Judgment at Christ's return. 24:17 Second Objection Doesn't the fact that the word "rulers" is used mean that Romans 13 is referring to ALL those who claim or wield coercive power, including the state? No, it is using "rulers" and other terms to refer exclusively to legitimate civil rulers in their actually administering civil justice. 33:04 Follow-up Doesn't Romans 13 simply describe rulers rather than prescribe what counts as a ruler? No, similar to other passages, such as Hebrews 13:17, there is an imperative to submit to those that fit a description, and what is described entails a prescribed office that God ordains. 41:20 Third Objection Doesn't Romans 13 require us to pay taxes, so how could it not be speaking about the state? No, Scripture never requires simply paying taxes. We are only required to pay whatever we actually owe. Jesus, likewise, only says that Caesar's own property belongs to Caesar and should be given to him. There are legitimate examples of "tribute" and "custom" that are not state taxes. 49:33 Fourth Objection Isn't this view bringing in an ideology alien to the text and improperly reading Romans 13 in reverse by imposing a prescription from later verses onto earlier verses that are speaking of providence if taken on their own terms? No, this view is also supported by those who disagree with our political views, and is distinct from libertarianism and anarchism. The view also accounts for the flow of thought, the textual context, and its meaning in relation to other teaching in Scripture. Additionally, the idea that submission is required on the basis of providence is nonsensical. 1:04:37 Fifth Objection Isn't this view of Romans 13 susceptible to theonomy, and how is the evil referred to restricted to civil wrong-doing and not also inclusive of sin (or of sins penalized in the Mosaic law)? No, we can agree with establishmentarians and theocrats, etc, on the prescriptive-office view of Romans 13 without condoning their error about civil penalizing non-aggressive immorality in the new covenant era. The lex talionis in Genesis 9 provides the God-given civil justice principle of proportionality, properly understood in terms of the non-aggression principle, for civil governance outside the now obsolete old covenant. 1:14:16 Sixth Objection Romans 13 can't be talking about libertarian anarchism, so how could it not be referring to the Roman Empire? This view of the passage is not about political theory (although we go on to argue that our political theory is consistent with the passage and the rest of Scripture). Paul is explaining in light of the previous chapter that just civil governance is legitimate and part of God's normative design for societal life, and compatible with Christianity. But the Roman Empire is not the reference because it doesn't fit the prescriptive ordination described, and Paul is also speaking to Christians when and where the Roman Empire doesn't exist. 1:23:55 Outro Referenced Links: Gregory Baus links: https://linktr.ee/gregorybaus Baus on Previous BAP episodes: About Romans 13: https://youtube.com/watch?v=dLeYgn7-hik Conquest of Canaan: https://youtube.com/watch?v=t3KFqcQlPuA Sphere Sovereignty:

In my time podcasting, I've often had people respond to the ideas and arguments I discuss on my show with agreement to the content, but a disdain for the term "anarchy". So, why do I use that word? Do I consider myself to be an anarchist? Well, the truth is, no - I am not an anarchist. But, I use that term for a reason. In this episode, I dive into the history of the development of my platform and why I settled on the name "Biblical Anarchy". I look at the passages in 1 Samuel 8 and Mark 10 is guideposts to what the Bible teaches us about the human rulers and kingdoms, and what being part of God's Kingdom entails for Christians. Jacob Winograd, host of the Biblical Anarchy podcast, joins me on this episode to discuss anarchism. The word 'anarchy' is often used synonymously with terms like 'chaos', 'disorder', and 'lawlessness', but Jacob argues that anarchy actually means not giving one institution in society a monopoly on power and instead producing cooperation and peace through decentralized, voluntary association and hierarchy. He contends that we have misunderstood the word and that it is the ideal political arrangement. We then discuss the compatibility between anarchy, the Bible, and Christian faith, and explore the current state of the liberty movement in the US. In this episode, I debated the Chat GPT Open AI on whether the Bible can make a case for anarchy/a poly-centric legal order. Using a Socratic approach, I managed to convince the AI that not only would an anarchist legal order be compatible with what the Bible teaches, but that such a legal order would probably be superior in many ways to the one we have today in our society. What does the Bible teach us about governance, authority and human relationships? What is Anarchy? Is it violent revolutionaries or radical pacifism? In this pilot episode of the Biblical Anarchy Podcast, we dive into these topics and set the stage for what this podcast's focus and goal will be, and I make an opening argument for why following the Bible consistently leads us to reject the State and kingdoms of men in favor of a system of decentralized governance that promotes Christian virtues of social cooperation, peace, and true justice. The Biblical Anarchy Podcast is part of the Christians For Liberty Network, a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute.

Jose and I Take Biblical Anarchy by StormHello there! I’m uploading a couple of appearances on other podcasts this week before I get back into the swing of things with interviews next week. First, here’s my appearance on Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy. Jose and I joined Jacob to talk about our political journeys, our podcasting journeys, and a little about our spiritual journeys.I’ve always said, “It’s our enemy the state, not our enemy the left!” This is the one where I kind of reverse that position, at least for now.I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!Episode LinksSubscribe to Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy on YouTube.Follow me on Odysee. Jacob's Back, Back AgainJacob Winograd joins me to talk about life. He appreciates all your prayers and good thoughts for his dad, who was removed from the ventilator today! Still not out of the woods, but things are looking better. In addition to Jacob’s dad’s health, we talk about the state of the liberty movement, why I’m no longer calling myself agorist, and a touching story about Jacob, his daughter, and his faith. Host of Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy and The LP Pennsylvania Mises Caucus Podcast, Jacob Winograd joins the Fite to discus #MassNoncompliance, spreading the good word of liberty, and probably a lot about autism. http://linktr.ee/fite4liberty
The ALMIGHTY Jacob Winograd from the Biblical Anarchy podcast joins me! We dive into what brought Jacob to the liberty movement and what makes him an Anarcho Christian capitalist. We touch on Jacob's religious upbringing and why he thinks faith is important. We also talk about people in the LP fighting with Mises instead of caring about actual issues that face our direct freedom & more!!!Adam Nutter:https://linktr.ee/AdamNutter
Biblical Anarchy and Libertarian Nerdery with Jacob WinogradJacob and I hung out in Pittsburgh recently and had pretty good conversations. He’s the host of a podcast called Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy, so naturally I wanted to hear all about his faith and political beliefs and how they play together. We also get into some pretty hardcore first principles libertarian rights theory stuff and, my current favorite subject following my conversation with David Gornoski, scapegoating. Mostly we’re just new friends getting to know each other better. I look forward to our future conversations. You’ll notice my half of the interview was a little echoey. I neglected to switch over from the internal laptop mic to my external podcasting mic. I’ll wear sackcloth and ashes as penance. (Also, thanks to Chris and team at Podsworth Media for making it sound WAY better than the original, which paid subscribers were privy to, but you, oh freeloader, are not. Fix that here.)Jacob LinksWatch the Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy vids YouTubeFollow Jacob on TwitterLike the Daniel 3: Biblical Anarchy Facebook page and join the discussionRecommended Reading: Mere Christianity, by CS LewisSponsorBeYou Enterprises invites you back to your own body.
