In this bonus episode, we interview Dr. David VanDrunen. We consider his reply on several points to Pastor Taylor Drummond's critical article that we discuss in episode 17. The title of that article is "Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy" and it examines particular arguments in David VanDrunen's book Politics After Christendom.VanDrunen expresses his appreciation for Drummond's article and our episode discussing it, raises questions concerning immoral complicity if the state is taken to be illegitimate, offers some clarification about his (up to this point) not having differentiated monopoly states from non-monopolistic civil governance in his writing, raises questions concerning what sort of consent is normative for the customary legal order's own legitimacy and its authorizing function, raises the question of when abuse or injustice might categorically disqualify one from rightfully possessing authoritative office and its relation to political resistance, and, at the end, responds to our proposal how a fuller, non-aggressionist view of proportionality in the lex talionis of the Noahic Covenant entails a conclusive argument in favor of the exclusively "protectionist" purpose of civil governance law. https://reformedlibertarians.com/bonusCMain Points of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:09 Episode description02:15 Prefatory statements05:37 The question of immoral complicity16:30 Clarifying matters of complicity21:13 The question of civil governance vs. monopoly state27:55 Distinguishing normativity from de facto (non-)conformity to norms31:00 The question of legitimizing consent35:56 Distinguishing compliance under duress (by aggression)40:45 The question of abuse/tyranny and de-legitimization45:20 The question of a conclusive protectionist-only view49:32 Remaining uncertainty about Scriptural “regulative principle” for civil governance52:29 Closing remarksAdditional ResourcesAbout David VanDrunenhttps://www.wscal.edu/faculty-member/david-vandrunen/   – author page at Mongerismhttps://www.monergism.com/authorsspeakers/david-vandrunen   – bib at ResearchGatehttps://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/David-VanDrunen-2115184386 Episode 17: David VanDrunen's View Of Civil Government, with Taylor Drummondhttps://reformedlibertarians.com/017 “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” by Taylor Drummondhttps://libertarianchristians.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/CLR-5-Drummond.pdfPolitics After Christendom by David VanDrunenhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/0310108845/ “The Protectionist Purpose of Law: A Moral Case from the Biblical Covenant with Noah,” by David VanDrunenhttps://www.pdcnet.org/jsce/content/jsce_2015_0035_0002_0101_0117 Episode 2: What Does Romans 13 Say About Civil Government?https://reformedlibertarians.com/002 Episode 8: The Boetie Option - the peaceful underthrow of the statehttps://reformedlibertarians.com/008 Episode 14: Does Political Representation Make Sense?, with Gerard Caseyhttps://reformedlibertarians.com/014 Episode 15: Can Christian Civil Government Be Theocratic?https://reformedlibertarians.com/015 Episode 18: Politics And The Church's Mission: What Should The Church Teach About Civil Government? https://reformedlibertarians.com/018 Audio of Answering 10 Objections to Libertarian Anarchism by Roderick Longhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsUjJ7TOhgk&list=PLwrDNUO5MDu8WYU5oB7l037lvAEjSoPBr&index=13  The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.netAudio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com

He speaks about how VanDrunen's biblical arguments for the legitimacy of the state fail his own standard for justifying the state. Brian is a strong believer in libertarianism and the idea that both parties have their obvious flaws therefore the only thing that makes sense is minimizing government and allowing people to be free to be who they want to be. The idea of libertarianism is always intriguing to me theory, so it was really interesting to pressure test and examine what it really means, how it works, and how tolerant it actually is. Bio Provided by Brian: Brian McWilliams is a native Philadelphian currently living in Los Angeles. He's a communications and public relations expert, comedian and writer. His passion and concern for liberty was realized during Ron Paul's 2008 campaign, which shed light on the troubling initiatives our government was embracing that infringed on the tenets that the United States was founded upon. Brian is the host and producer of “Mean Age Daydream,” the Lions of Liberty Network's weekly Wednesday look at current events, culture and comedy through a liberty lens.

This time, he joins Doug Stuart to discuss his latest book, Strangers With Candy: Observations from the Ordinary Business of Life, in which Art highlights a simple economic fact: buying candy from strangers is commonplace in any modern economy. Before diving into the book, Art and Doug spend some time discussing economics more broadly. Art walks us through the story of how he first became interested in economics, going on to explain and clarify a number of misconceptions surrounding the discipline. Drawing from his book, Art suggests that economists are to blame for many of these misconceptions, as they often do a bad job explaining the economics of how the world works. In Strangers With Candy, Art intends to rectify this issue, offering an accessible and easily digestible analysis of how economics impacts and shapes our day-to-day lives. This episode gives listeners a taste of Art's analysis, as well as discussion on a variety of related and intriguing topics, such as municipal development policy, economic growth vs economic progress, and Art's argument for why business is a public service. A new ATF rule reclassifies firearms equipped with pistol braces as short-barreled rifles, implying that brace owners are looking at felony criminal charges if they are not registered with the ATF. It also imposes increased taxation on firearms and accessories equipped with these braces. Parker McCumber, an OEF veteran, joins me to explain how this hits disabled veterans the hardest.  https://youtu.be/ukr0BbJ8wkY The pistol brace is a device that allows a firearm to be strapped onto a user's arm and was initially created for disabled veterans to fire recreationally and in competition with only one arm. The ATF and the Department of Justice claimed that pistol braces are being found and commonly used in more shootings and gang activities. However, Parker explained that pistol braces do not make firearms more lethal and that this new rule is suppressing the ability of disabled American veterans to exercise their Second Amendment rights.  The ATF has projected 40 million pistol brace accessories on legally purchased firearms, which could mean tens of millions of gun owners becoming felons over this new rule. However, there is some optimism that the rule may be overturned, as the Fifth Circuit Appeals Court recently ruled that the bump stock ban was an unconstitutional usurpation of authority from Congress by the ATF. Parker McCumber is an OEF Veteran, and entrepreneur who currently serves as a Field Artillery Officer in the Utah National Guard. He has over 11 years of experience in combat arms roles within the Army and Army National Guard. In this episode of the Libertarian Christian Podcast, host Doug Stuart interviews John Odermatt, co-founder of the Lions of Liberty Network. John opens up about his journey towards becoming a leading advocate within the criminal justice reform movement, rooted in both personal experience and his Christian faith. His passion for the subject has been fueled by firsthand encounters with the injustices of the system, leading him to create and host the Felony Friday podcast, a platform that raises awareness about the issue and brings powerful stories of redemption from those affected. Odermatt's dedication towards reforming a broken system is a testament to the importance of addressing the consequences of crime in a restorative, compassionate manner. A major aspect of the conversation about criminal justice reform revolves around the necessity for compassion and grace. Whether discussing rehabilitation, reintegration, or individual struggles, understanding the importance of mercy and forgiveness is an integral part of any lasting solution. As Christians, this approach aligns with the core teachings of Jesus and underscores the value of treating others with respect, regardless of their past mistakes. For John Odermatt, compassion plays a significant role in his advocacy efforts. Through his podcast and personal interactions, he emphasizes that providing second chances and acknowledging the humanity of those who have been through the criminal justice system can open doors for healing and reintegration. Odermatt highlights that one's past should not dictate their future, and a system that embraces restorative justice can foster genuine growth and change. John Odermatt is a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform and libertarianism. He began his journey in the world of podcasting nearly a decade ago, and has since become a co-founder of the Lions of Liberty Network. With years of experience under his belt, John now hosts the popular Finding Freedom Podcast, where he interviews individuals who have faced the injustices of the criminal justice system, as well as those who have overcome adversity and found success after incarceration. In this episode of the Libertarian Christian Podcast, host Doug Stuart discusses the topic of faith and violence with Jerry Robinson, founder of True Riches Academy and host of True Riches Radio. Together, Doug and Jerry take on the topic of "gun culture" in America, which Jerry suggests is contradictory to Christ's teachings on radical nonviolence. In addition to the rich discussion on the ethics of gun ownership and gun use, the conversation highlights the importance of understanding God's character despite the pervasive interpretative pluralism and hermetical difficulties of today. Jerry Robinson is the founder and executive director of the True Riches Academy and host of True Riches Radio, a podcast dedicated to challenging believers to think and thinkers to believe. A discussion of whether a Reformed Christian view of civil governance is compatible with theocracy. We explain how the term "theocratic" has been used, and two key elements of a theocratic view (namely, the monopoly state and civil establishment of religion) that must be rejected in a genuinely Christian view of civil governance. We also touch on how some who support a theocratic view go wrong in their eschatology. https://reformedlibertarians.com/015/ 00:00 Start 00:32 Episode description 01:27 About the history of the term https://www.encyclopedia.com/social-sciences-and-law/political-science-and-government/political-science-terms-and-concepts/theocracy 02:22 All of life, and so all politics, is ultimately guided by central religious commitments 04:45 The objectionable sense of "theocratic" is not entailed by the universality of central religious commitments and their ultimate guidance of all of life 05:28 Two key elements of theocracy are "a monopoly state" and "civil establishment of religion"; Monopoly explained 07:41 Just and unjust uses of coercion; The obligation of non-aggression; The illegitimacy of all states 12:13 A simple analogy 15:12 Establishmentarianism explained https://reformedlibertarians.com/against-civil-establishment-of-religion/ 16:46 The unique, symbolic, and temporary (now obsolete) old Mosaic covenant theocracy involved suspension of the common grace order; It was a temporary symbolic-intrusion of final judgment and the kingdom of God, now inaugurated in the new covenant institutional church, and yet to be consummated in the New Heavens and Earth 19:59 While the old covenant was in effect, it was not a violation of non-aggression  https://reformedlibertarians.com/002 ; Now, in the new covenant era, the normal operation of the common grace order has resumed; This entails prohibition of establishmentarianism and monopoly, enacting either is antichrist 22:03 Genuinely limited governance, required by God's ultimate sovereignty, according to a consistent Christian view, entails non-monopoly and non-establishment 24:17 Recap 25:10 The under-realization of inaugurated eschatology in the new covenant by postmillennialism and so-called optimism that often accompanies a theocratic view Additional Resources More about the temporary suspension of the normal operation of common grace and the eschatological-intrusion within the old covenant theocracy : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3KFqcQlPuA More about sphere sovereignty : Episode 09 - https://reformedlibertarians.com/009 Episode 12 - https://reformedlibertarians.com/012 More about the underrealization of inaugurated eschatology in the new covenant as held by a postmil view (Gaffin refers to postmil's de-eschatologizing) : https://www.newhopefairfax.org/files/Gaffin%20Theonomy%20and%20Eschatology.pdf The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com/ and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.net Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com

Jeremiah Ludwig, an independent housing policy researcher based in Washington DC, joins me to discuss how housing is becoming less affordable in cities due to supply shortages caused by strict zoning policies, and how this affects not just low-income families, but also middle-class families.  We also explore strategies for addressing the issue, such as upzoning, which has been successful in California and Seattle and involves increasing the size of the allowable building envelope on a property. This approach is seen as less objectionable than completely tearing down zoning laws. https://youtu.be/rNeBukrXmaU Jeremiah Ludwig is an independent Housing Policy Researcher based in Washington DC, with four years of experience studying and researching US housing markets and policy. James Czerniawski joins me to discuss two recent Supreme Court cases, Gonzalez v. Google and Twitter v. Tamana, which have implications for free speech on the internet and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Section 230 is a law that protects websites from liability for third-party content.  Chenowski, a policy analyst, explains that repealing or reforming Section 230 could significantly impact speech online and limit access to new and diverse voices. The Gonzalez v. Google case involves a family suing Google over a terrorist attack in which an ISIS recruitment video was seen on the platform. The family argues that Google should be liable for recommending the video and aiding a terrorist organization. The case raises questions about liability for third-party content and the extent to which companies can be held responsible for the actions of their users. https://youtu.be/t4B7hy86ixg James Czerniawski is a Senior Policy Analyst at Americans for Prosperity, a national think tank in DC with 35 state chapters nationwide. A discussion of the main points of Kerry Baldwin's article on the plausibility of stateless civil governance and the common difficulty in imagining such a society. We talk about factors that may contribute to the failure of imagination such as the mere-exposure effect, the Overton window, and plausibility structures. Also mentioned are several examples of historically existing non-monopolistic civil governance. Spontaneous order is explained in terms of a consistent sphere sovereignty, and we provide resources on how civil governance can be practically and realistically provided without the state. https://reformedlibertarians.com/012/ 00:00 Start 00:32 Episode description Article discussed https://libertarianchristians.com/2018/05/07/plausibility-of-a-stateless-society/ 01:18 Previous episodes in series 1. Why China wants to invade Taiwan: A deep dive into the conflict with Zack Yost

Why does China want to invade Taiwan? My guest Zachary Yost is a co-host of the War Economy and State podcast and a young Voices Contributor, and we take a deep dive on the differences between Ukraine and Taiwan and how China would fare if they invaded.  Video - https://youtu.be/GnaxTuWMeHI  Taiwan is an island about 90 to 100 miles off the coast of mainland China, and officially it is the Republic of China with over 23 million people. It's the side that lost the Chinese Civil War, and the government still claims it is the sovereign ruler of mainland China. Chiang Kai-Shek retreated to the island, and the US provided varying amounts of aid over the years.  On the other hand, the People's Republic of China claims that Taiwan is a breakaway province and not an independent country. The world no longer recognizes Taiwan as China, and it was removed from the Security Council at the United Nations in the 1970s in favor of the CCP government. The US has been a partner of Taiwan for a long time, and the US has provided varying amounts of aid over the years.  Taiwanese identity is a contentious issue within Taiwanese politics. While most of the population, especially younger people, identifies as Taiwanese, not Chinese, it is a lasting piece of historical fiction in the government they hold onto that they can't really get rid of. Taiwan does not want to declare independence, which is a very nuanced issue.  Also, the comparison between Ukraine and Taiwan is usually rather simplistic and has an agenda behind it. In his article, Yost discusses the differences between Ukraine and Taiwan regarding their ability to defend against invasion. Ukraine has a vast land border that is easy to cross, while Taiwan is an island surrounded by water. Additionally, Russia and China have different border disputes, with Russia having mostly resolved its issues and China still having ongoing conflicts with India and Vietnam. Tactically it would be much more difficult for China to invade Taiwan, as the Taiwanese have prepared extensively for potential amphibious assaults for decades.  Unlike in Ukraine, Yost suggests that it is in the US's interest for Taiwan to remain independent but not in its interest to defend Taiwan itself. Taiwan is a more significant strategic partner for the US than Ukraine. Instead, the US should sell Taiwan weapons to facilitate its ability to deter and defeat an invasion. He argues that China has structural weaknesses, and the invasion of Taiwan would not herald the end of the world.  Zack Yost is a freelance writer and researcher. He was a Fall 2021 Marcellus Policy Fellow with the John Quincy Adams Society and has been published in a variety of outlets. You can subscribe to his newsletter and follow him on Twitter @ZacharyYost. Co-Host of the War Economy and State podcast. Brian Wohlgemuth and Vaughn Spargur join me to explain the basics of the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, where a Norfolk and Southern train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed and dumped about 50 cars on the ground.  Video - https://youtu.be/Rg29Hoax2KA  Despite the severity of the incident, the mainstream media coverage has been inadequate but has shown the power of alt media to hold mainstream media more accountable.  We discuss the concerns around the chemicals being released and the lack of trust in the EPA to handle the situation. Additionally, we touched on other pollution issues in Ohio, including Superfund sites. People are getting their testing done privately due to distrust of the EPA's testing practices, and the administration has been largely absent. The episode also covered a New York Times article that discussed Norfolk Southern's profits and accident rates. The article revealed that the company paid shareholders nearly 18 billion dollars through stock buybacks and dividends in the past five years, twice the amount invested in railways and operations. The company neglected to invest in safety regulations, such as modern braking systems and stronger tank cars. A recent train wreck raised questions about the company's safety protocols and inspection practices, and the recent strike was partially due to safety concerns.  We also discuss the controversy surrounding a 2015 safety regulation requiring electronically controlled pneumatic brakes for certain high-hazard flammable trains carrying at least 20 consecutive cars filled with liquid liquids like crude oil. The Trump administration repealed the rule in 2018 after lobbying by the railroad industry. According to experts, this rule wouldn't have mattered with this accident. Summary - Reformed Libertarians with Gregory Baus Today I'm announcing a new podcast that I've been working on and will be co-hosting. Many of you know that I'm a Reformed Christian who is also libertarian. But what you may not realize, is the extent to which my libertarian views are grounded in the Reformed faith. For the past years, I've been one of the only Reformed libertarians with a major platform. This has created a challenge to me to provide content on seemingly disparate topics, but this takes away from my ability to focus in the topics I'm better known for and would prefer to refine my focus on. So today, I'm making an announcement about this new project with my friend and colleague, Gregory Baus. I will be co-hosting this new podcast, in addition to this podcast, Dare to Think - which will only get better. I'm excited about the opportunities. Join me, Kerry Baldwin with Gregory Baus, as we Dare to Think about introducing libertarianism to the Reformed world.   Main Points of Discussion 00:00    Introduction 01:26    How we came to start the Reformed Libertarians Podcast; Previous episodes with Gregory Baus on culture 02:56    What's the purpose of having a Reformed perspective of libertarianism; Definition of libertarianism 04:48    Typical Objections: "Profit over people" or "Do whatever we want"; Austrian Economic Theory; "If we care about human life, society, this warrants coercing groups to get along"; Principles of justice, morality, conception of human nature, nature of society and how it operates 10:14    Didn't John Calvin believe in using the magistrate to enforce Christianity? Reformed churches came to confess disestablishmentarian 13:42    What about Christian Nationalism? Mixture of more or less precise of Christian Nationalism create confusion and rejects the best Reformed Covenant Theology 16:28    Is libertarianism is a viable idea to begin with? When is the optimal time explore the ideas of freedom and prosperity? Shouldn't we just make the best out of the system we have? A discussion of the main points of Kerry Baldwin's article on human sinfulness and the question of the state's necessity for civil governance. This includes (however imperfect in this life) Christian good works (increasingly, according to the moral normativity of God's abiding moral will), and increasing conformity to whatever other abiding norms God has established for human action generally, and for cultural activity. https://honest2blog.blogspot.com/2022/01/reformed-biblical-theological.html 11:20 Example: logical norms in creational revelation 12:54 Literal and figurative sense of fruitfulness 15:00 Temporal common curse on people, so also their labors and the world 16:02 The error of scholastic views of the relation of religion to cultural activity 17:47 Neocalvinism, against scholastic views, rejects the false idea that there can be any religiously neutral area of human life 19:40 Is this a "cultural Christianity"? 21:25 The error of theonomic views of Christian cultural activity 22:13 Neocalvinism, against theonomic views, holds that the Old (Mosaic) Covenant (and its law) is no longer in force, but has spiritual application for the church, and is not a model for believers' cultural activity in the New Covenant era 23:16 A distinctively Christian view of cultural activity is a matter of discerning creational revelation as understood through the perspective of Scriptural teaching 25:24 What about so-called "transformationalism"? 27:30 Regeneration, and union with Christ in faith, involves our whole selves and lives. All our activity may be service to Christ (Colossians 3:23-24), not in conformity to philosophy that is not according to Christ (Colossians 2:3-4, 8), but rather transformed according to an understanding that all things are created by, through, and for Christ, moreover, and that in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17) 28:48 The reality of present futility because of the fall, even for believers; and the reality of present meaningfulness by the measure of final resurrection life in Christ 1 Corinthians 15:58 32:48 Intro discussion between Pastor Nate Xanders and Gregory Baus on Reformed Libertarianism statement https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwrDNUO5MDu-56FIiArhzVisvc1TayOFS The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.net Audio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com

Based on these principles, Islam and Economics derives a framework of operational institutional tenets for the economic organization of a society. It addresses all important business, policy, and equity issues that any economic system should resolve and broadens the discussion on the modern discipline of “Islamic economics.” In this conversation, they delve into the most contentious issue within Islamic economics, which is charging interest. They cover how Islamic banks have answered the Qur'anic prohibition on usury, and how Salman sorts through this problem. Next, they explore the Islamic view of taxation, and Salman made an Islamic argument that the only two permissible forms of taxation are wealth taxes and land use taxes. On this week’s Democracy that Delivers podcast, CIPE’s Senior Program Officer for South Asia Jennifer Anderson sits in for Ken Jaques to conduct an engaging interview with Ali Salman on the wake of Malaysia’s election upset. After 61 years, Malaysia’s ruling coalition was defeated in the ballots. Salman begins by sharing his experience working on the topic of religion and liberty as a founding member and now CEO of the Islam and Liberty Network, eager to establish a global program to share Islam’s foundations as a proponent for free-trade and market economy. Anderson and Salman then discuss the surprising political change in Malaysia and the role of IDEAS (Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs) in changing the way citizens view government performance, as well as the role of anti-corruption efforts in the region.

It’s time to go back and cover some basics. Robert Kiyosaki’s Cashflow Quadrant is one of the simpler concepts to understand, yet it’s it had more impact on my professional life than almost any other idea.    I remember the first time I read ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, and got the part about the Cashflow Quadrant. All of a sudden my path felt more clear, and since that day, I've never looked at work the same way.   For many of you this may be a review. That’s okay. Don’t underestimate the power in revisiting some of these basic concepts. For those of you discovering this idea for the very first time, I’m wildly excited for you.    As we grow The Liberty Network it’s so important that all of the members fully understand ideas like this one.   This is a pen and paper type of episode (if you’re in the space to write). Enjoy the show, and please continue to share your feedback with me via email.   In today’s episode, you will learn:   The difference between the left-hand and right-hand side of the quadrant How to move from the left to the right without jeopardizing your current position and security The advantages of Business Ownership What the ‘Self-Employed Trap’ is and how to move beyond it The meaning of leverage, and why most ‘Business Owners’ are lacking it What it means to ‘scale’ a business and why scalability is so important The concept of the Evolved Economy and why it’s a GREAT place to play Examples of some the world’s most successful ‘Evolved Economy’ businesses   Resources Discussed   BOOK: Rich Dad, Poor Dad     Visit http://www.movingmillennials.com/138 for complete show notes, to download The Manifesto, and to receive your free ebook, 'The Millennial Mentors: Volume 1'.

In today’s episode, I unveil something I’ve been working on behind-the-scenes for about a month. The Liberty Network brings together everything I’ve been learning over the past 5 years as an entrepreneur and puts it all in one spot. This private group is for those who truly get it.    It’s for young people who understand that the concept of a secure job no longer exists. It’s for young people who realize that salaries and wages aren’t keeping pace with increased cost of living. It’s for young people who want to leave the 9 to 5 once and for all, jump out of debit, and into total freedom.    Tune in as I discuss the 3 problems that are driving us inside The Liberty Network, and introduce the 4-Step Roadmap to Total Freedom.    If you want to learn more by watching the 3-part video series that covers the details of The Liberty Network, email me directly at dave@movingmillennials.com and write ‘The Liberty Network’ in the subject line.   This is the beginning of what I believe to be my most important and most valuable work to date. I would love for you to be part of it. Thanks for tuning in.
