In this episode, Craig Thompson interviews Paul D. Miller about his book, The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism? They discuss the personal background of Paul Miller, the relationship between Christianity and America, the concept of separation of church and state, and the dangers of Christian nationalism. They also touch on the influence of Christianity on the American founding, the definition of nationalism, and the importance of American ideals over heritage. The conversation explores the tension between nationalism and progressivism and the need for constructive dialogue. The conversation explores the topics of American identity, human flourishing, the relationship between Christianity and America, the role of Western and Judeo-Christian values in promoting freedom, the impact of ideas on history, the importance of democracy, the tension between free speech and promoting certain beliefs, the role of local involvement in shaping communities, the establishment of national holidays, and the dangers of Christian nationalism. Takeaways Christian nationalism is the belief that America is a Christian nation and that the government should enforce a specific cultural and religious template. The historic Baptist emphasis in political theology is the separation of church and state, which is essential for religious freedom. Christian nationalism violates both constitutional and theological principles by giving the government jurisdiction over cultural and religious identity. American identity should be defined by the ideals of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, not by specific cultural or religious backgrounds. Nationalism and progressivism are two extremist, illiberal movements that fuel each other and hinder constructive dialogue. Neither the left nor the right is offering a vision of American identity or human flourishing that is satisfactory. The desire to avoid oppression is universal and not uniquely Western. Democracy is not impossible, but it requires a desire for peace and a willingness to live together without killing each other. Public libraries should be open to all citizens, regardless of their beliefs, but there should be a code of conduct that regulates behavior. The government should not have the power to ban certain groups from accessing public resources. There is a need to balance the celebration of national holidays with an understanding of the historical context and the exclusion of certain groups. Christian nationalism is an over-realized eschatology that seeks to build a version of the kingdom of God on earth, which is not the purpose of Christianity. The church should be the Christian nation, reflecting the true glory of the kingdom of God. There is a danger in merging the power of religion and politics, as history has shown. It is important to have an understanding and appreciation of our history as a nation, while also recognizing the flaws and striving for a more perfect union. Sound Bites “The historic Baptist emphasis in political theology is the separation of church and state.” “Christian nationalism is when you say America is a Christian nation and the government ought to keep it that way.” “To be an American means to accept the ideas of the Constitution and the Declaration, to be loyal to them and to participate in the drama of our life in this land.” “Neither of them is offering a vision of American identity that I can support.” “We're so busy tearing each other down on either side that we don't have the opportunity to actually encourage human flourishing.” “There's nothing uniquely Western about not wanting to be oppressed.” Subscribe to The Ordinary Christian Podcast

How to be a Patriotic ChristianThe topic of Christian nationalism takes us into deep questions of how we understand and live out our allegiances to both our country and the kingdom of God, how we ought to relate to our neighbors, and how we should pursue justice and flourishing within our nation. It's also a topic rife with confusion and uncertainty. But what is Christian nationalism, and how is it different from a robust patriotism? On our podcast we explore these questions with scholars and authors Richard Mouw and Paul D. Miller who help us distinguish between living out one's faith in the public square and instrumentalizing faith for political ends:"Because I think America is in fact, so great, it means it is so tempting to idolize America because it's just one of the greatest things. Anything we idolize becomes destructive, and it can be destructive individually of our spiritual lives. But when you idolize a nation, that nation can be unbelievably destructive." - Paul D. What do people mean when they say “Christian Nationalism”? – 6/26/24

What do people mean when they say "Christian Nationalism"?   Christian nationalism is in the news, but what is it? Nationalism is different from feeling patriotic or making sure to vote every November. Part of what defines nationalism in general is its goal to reserve privileges for only one group in a country that has many groups. Christian nationalism, to be specific, aims for the government to privilege Christians. Dr. Paul D. Miller believes Christian nationalism is a danger to the Church. That's because it makes a Christian's citizenship in a country a higher priority than a Christian's citizenship in God's Kingdom. “If we start to orient our hearts towards America as if it were an ultimate thing, well, that's actually idolatry, and we misunderstand the entire Gospel, as if the Gospel is all about making America great. And that's just not why Jesus came,” Miller says. “He said very clearly, ‘My Kingdom is not of this world.' I'm grateful for America, but it's really important that I don't confuse America for Jesus' Kingdom.” He believes that Christian nationalism not only threatens the Church, but also our democracy. “It is a danger, I think, in a more mild sense of being in tension with the principles of liberty and equality for all citizens, Christian and non-Christian alike.” And while not all Christian nationalists are violent, some are. Those waving Christian symbols and calling on God as they broke into the nation's capitol on January 6, 2021 are an example of the movement's violent minority. “That kind of mixing of religious rhetoric with a violent assault on the citadel of democracy is, I think, clearly dangerous for American democracy,” Miller says. “Again, that's a small minority, but it is there, let's not ignore it.”  Miller wants the Church to be aware of the danger of Christian nationalism, even as he points out that it's not the only threat.  “This is part of a much bigger conversation. While we've talked about the dangers on the Right, there's dangers on the Left as well.” - - - Dr. Paul D. Miller is Martha's guest for this Inside Out discussion on Christian nationalism. Dr. Miller is a former member of the National Security Council staff who has served as an intelligence analyst for the CIA and as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. Currently Dr. Miller is a professor of the practice of international affairs at Georgetown University. Read a more detailed biography of Dr. Paul D. Miller, a Christian scholar, political theorist, veteran, and former White House staffer, provides a detailed portrait of—and case against—Christian nationalism. Building on his practical expertise not only in the archives and classroom but also in public service, Miller unravels this ideology's historical importance, its key tenets, and its political, cultural, and spiritual implications.

In just the last year, the conversation around Christian nationalism has changed dramatically. What was once a more agreed-upon slur is now being embraced as a badge of honor. But the reality is that Christian nationalism actually corrupts Christianity and at its core, is antithetical to the Gospel. On today's episode, Keith discusses this phenomenon with Paul D. Miller, author of the recent book, The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism. Paul provides a helpful, formal definition of Christian nationalism, explaining what is (and what isn't). Listen as he answers questions like: Should churches take part in patriotic celebrations? If America loses its Christian faith, will our democracy crumble? Is embracing “America first” ideology considered nationalism? Does nationalism lead to segregated societies? Why does Christian nationalism thrive in certain environments over others? Why are so many self-proclaimed Christian nationalists drawn to Trump? Finally, Paul ends by sharing three tests you can use to make sure you're not falling into Christian nationalism yourself. You won't want to miss this one! Ok, truth time... From what I'm reading, Republican control of the U.S. Senate may be decided in the Georgia run-off next month between incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock and his Republican challenger, Herschel Walker. Curious to know more about how that could go, either way, I watched the debate between Warnock and Walker, and was struck by one exchange in particular. Warnock, who pastors at Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Martin Luther King, Jr. also co-pastored back in the day, says women should have the right to choose abortion because "even God gave Adam and Eve the ability to choose." To that, Walker replied that we need to read the rest of the book to learn that God told us to choose life. This, then, brings us back again to the question of what "Christian nationalism" is. And you can check out this CT article from last year by Paul D. Miller for more on why I can't quite take it seriously. Or, by contrast, read also this piece by William Galston from November 4th. The long and short of it is that all folks like me really want politically is the freedom to be heard when we counter the likes of Raphael Warnock with "it is written," preferably without being called Nazis for doing so. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Our second political episode ever! Does it have anything to do with the elections occurring next week? You bet! Did we invite this guest on the show to trash nationalism some more? Sure did! BUT: Paul Miller is not our typical guest. For one thing, he's a self-described conservative patriot. He's a professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He worked for George W. Bush. And he's a Christian (a Baptist to be specific). From that perspective, he mounts an unflinching case against Christian nationalism in his book The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism. We don't see eye to eye on everything with Paul, but we're definitely on the same page about the seriousness and the urgency of this movement within American Christianity that has taken over an entire party and is actively threatening to overthrow American democracy, or as Paul calls it, the liberal experiment of self-governance. It's important stuff, and people on opposite sides of a lot of political and moral issues should be talking to each other about it. So that's what we do here.A couple books mentioned in the interview are:Mere Civility by Teresa BejanThe Case for Nationalism by Rich LowryThe beverage we sample is Willett Family Estate Small Batch 4 Year Rye. Paul D. Miller is currently a professor of global politics and security at Georgetown University, and a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. He worked at the National Security Council under Presidents Bush and Obama, and was a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army prior to that. Miller's book is "The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism." There are all kinds of books out there on Christian nationalism. But what I like about Paul is that he's coming to this topic as someone who has spent most of his life as a conservative Christian. He's making a very robust case for why Christian nationalism is a bad idea, but he's doing so, as he writes in his book, "because of my patriotism and my Christian faith, not despite them."And because Miller comes from inside evangelical Christianity, he's careful to avoid painting with too broad a brush. He doesn't accuse any Christian involved in political activism of pushing Christian nationalism. And he also doesn't say that someone who supports Christian nationalism, or who believes that America is a Christian nation, is a fascist, an authoritarian, or a theocrat who wants the country to be governed by the 10 commandments. At the same time, Miller is quite clear in his book that nationalism usually leads to authoritarianism. He takes on nationalism first, and engages in this book with the arguments of the chief proponents of nationalism, such as R.R. Reno and Yoram Hazony. And only after doing that does Miller move on to addressing the beliefs of Christian nationalists."Patriotism—an affectionate, open gratitude for the blessings of our political life here—is a virtue, which is why is it so important to distinguish it from the vice of nationalism," Miller writes. "But America is not a chosen nation, it is not the 'nation whose God is the Lord,' (Psalm 33:12) and Americans are not the 'people who are called by my name,' of 2 Chronicles 7:14. All Christians should join in that affirmation."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to episode seventy-nine of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I got to make another new friend and have an important conversation about an issue that has been a hot topic of conversation for the last five or six years – Christian Nationalism. Dr. Paul D. Miller is a political theorist and political scientist focusing on international affairs, the American experiment, and America's role in the world. He spent a decade in public service as Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff, as an intelligence analyst for the CIA, and a military intelligence officer in the US Army. Paul is currently a Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at Georgetown University. He is an alum of Georgetown, has a master's degree in public policy from Harvard, and earned a PhD from Georgetown in International Relations. As you can imagine, he has written widely on international affairs, political theory, and religion in public life. His most recent book – and the focus of our conversation – is The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism (published recently by IVP Academic). It is an excellent book. It is thoughtful, detailed, and balanced. I learned a great deal form the book and felt very delighted and privileged to be able to have a conversation with Dr. Miller about it. No matter your political leanings, there is a great deal to be gleaned from Dr. Miller's research and experience.

Everyone is suddenly talking about Christian nationalism. Some on the political right are embracing the label, while others on the political left are condemning it. Bart Barber, the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention, was interviewed on 60 Minutes this week to explain why Christian nationalism is fundamentally anti-Baptist. But Al Mohler, another influential SBC leader, is less eager to condemn Christian nationalism and takes a more nuanced view. Mohler also says any Christian who doesn't vote for the Republican Party is being “unfaithful to God.” The Holy Post crew unpacks his argument.  Then, Skye interviews Georgetown professor, Paul D. Miller, about his new book, “The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism.” Miller defines Christian nationalism historically, and explains why it is both anti-American and anti-Christian. The topic of Christian nationalism has been much in the news recently. Republican politicians like Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia both have claimed the term as their own, and Boebert in particular has loudly proclaimed that she does not believe in the separation of church and state. “I'm tired of this separation of church and state junk,” she said. “The church is supposed to direct the government; the government is not supposed to direct the church.”Perhaps the most aggressive Christian nationalist, despite his protestations about the term, is Pennsylvania's Doug Mastriano, a state senator who is the Republican nominee for governor in that state. Listen to Mastriano's comments in a 2021 zoom call a week before the January 6 insurrection, in which he baptizes conspiracy theories and his political will to power in the language of spiritual righteousness. That call was organized by a man named Jim Garlow, who is reportedly influential in something called the New Apostolic Reformation, which is a loosely connected network of men and women who call themselves apostles and prophets. These self-proclaimed divine emissaries claim that God speaks to them uniquely, and they claim authority over other people based on these grounds. Here's another example of the growing fusion throughout the country between religion and politics, in a way that confuses the two as one and the same rather than understanding them as separate but enhanced by one another if cross-pollinated in healthy ways. This is audio of an event this past July 1 in Atlanta, Georgia, in which two major figures in the NAR -- Lance Wallnau and Dutch Sheets, along with two other men, Mario Murillo and Hank Kunnemman, according to Jennifer Cohn of the Bucks County Beacon -- lead an audience in a vow to take over the U.S. government and impose a theocracy.Philip S. Gorski is an expert on Christian nationalism. He is the author of "The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy," along with Samuel L. Perry, a professor at Oklahoma University. Gorski is a sociology professor at Yale University and is the author of American Babylon: Christianity and Democracy Before and After Trump and American Covenant: A History of Civil Religion from the Puritans to the Present.Gorski has written this of Christian nationalism: it is "political idolatry dressed as religious orthodoxy."We talk about the ways that sometimes the term is used imprecisely to condemn anyone who is a Christian, and I ask him to help us explain the ways that political extremism, especially the growing willingness to discard democracy and pursue authoritarianism, can be motivated by this belief system. You can also check out David French's interview with Paul D. Miller on being thoughtful as Christians about political agendas: "When the Bible tells us to take captive every thought, and to test for truth, to seek wisdom and understanding, I think all that applies to our political lives as well. And that means we have to be on guard against those who would seek to hijack us or our movement, or our churches, we have to be on guard against those who would make a direct appeal to us, for our power, or to be our protector or defender. There are good ways for Christians to be involved in politics and to work for justice and flourishing for all, but there are some dangers in making ourselves vulnerable to those who would exploit us."Paul D. Miller on our role as Christians in the public square: "Christendom is not the point of Christianity, right? Jesus didn't come in order for us to build a society that feigned outward obedience to Christian cultural norms. He came to inaugurate his kingdom, which he will consummate and will make real when he returns, we're not the ones who build His kingdom. We might, insofar as we act as citizens of his kingdom today, be foreshadowings or foretastes of it, and that's a good thing. But Jesus' kingdom doesn't need our help, and it will come about with or without us. That means that our agenda in the public square isn't building Christian society, it is building peace and justice."-------Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? Much of our conversation with Dr. Paul D. Miller is about his recent book THE RELIGION OF AMERICAN GREATNESS: WHAT'S WRONG WITH CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM. Over the course of our talk, we do a deep dive into the very definition of Nationalism and Christian Nationalism; the difference between tribal evangelicalism and biblical Christianity; how jazz was used as an example by Rich Lowry of National Review to make an argument FOR Nationalism that Dr. Miller then uses to make quite a thorough argument AGAINST Nationalism; the particular chauvinism of Christian Nationalists; the blasphemy of the insurrectionists who invoked God's name in the midst of a terrorist attack on January 6th; and, yes, we did talk about what Professor Miller meant when he said he would not want to live in a country where drag queens were barred by law from going to the library or hosting an event.  Dr. Miller is a political theorist and political scientist focusing on international affairs, the American experiment, and America's role in the world. Previously, he spent a decade in public service as Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. He is also a research fellow with the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and a visiting professor with the American Enterprise Institute's Initiative on Faith and Public Life. Dr. Miller writes widely on international affairs, political theory, religion and public life, and film and culture. In addition to his most recent book, The Religion of American Greatness, he is also the author of Just War and Ordered Liberty; American Power and Liberal Order; and Armed State Building. More of his writing has appeared in the Washington Post, The New Republic, Mere Orthodoxy, The American Interest, The World Affairs Journal and quite a few other publications. Dr. Miller holds a PhD in international relations and a BA in government from Georgetown, and a master in public policy from Harvard University. https://www.pauldavidmiller.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Religion-American-Greatness-Christian-Nationalism-ebook/dp/B09MSNPQZ4/
