Last year, Martin Empson joined Long Reads to speak about the German Peasants' War, Europe's biggest social revolt before the French Revolution. Martin returns to talk about what happened next. After the revolt was crushed, radical religious tendencies became a vehicle for social discontent. The most famous of those tendencies was known as Anabaptism. A group of religious radicals inspired by Anabaptist ideas even took power in the German town of Munster. After the bloody repression of the Munster rebels, the very idea of Anabaptism became a sinister bogeyman for Europe's ruling classes. Martin's book The Time of the Harvest Has Come: Revolution, Reformation and the German Peasants' War will be published later this year. Read Martin's Jacobin article, “Anabaptism Was the Revolutionary Face of Reformation Europe,” here: https://jacobin.com/2024/07/anabaptism-reformation-europe-peasants-revolution Long Reads is a Jacobin podcast looking in-depth at political topics and thinkers, both contemporary and historical, with the magazine's longform writers. Gavin Nascimento is back to chat about the conflict in the heartland of the middle east. We chat about how to approach this topic, and we do not support the conflict in any way. It's crazy how polarizing this is now after everything we have been through. How do we facilitate the next movement, and stick to team humanity, and use knowledge and wisdom to rise above this. We get into the parasite class, the dark history of modern Zionism, British Zionism, Cecil Rhodes, The Balfour Declaration, The Roundtable Group, the state born out of terrorism, the shadowy organization to control USA and Britain and thus the world, the call for secret societies, The Rothschilds and Rockefellers, the Dead Sea, psychological strategies, nihilism and revisionist Zionism. In the last part - which goes long, another 1.25 hours we get deeper into all of this. How some of this came from Russia way back then, the elite unifying to maintain order, Radical Reformation, the devils advocate question on defense of the powers in the early 1900's, morality - the moral life of babies, Milgrim, Evian Conference, Nazi's and Eugenics, the Marxist roots of modern Israel, the golden rule and united principles. https://twitter.com/truthwarriorg https://www.instagram.com/truthwarriorgavin/ https://www.amazon.com/History-Elitism-Government-Population-Control-ebook/dp/B0BSS9W4M5 To gain access to the second half of show and our Plus feed for audio and podcast please clink the link http://www.grimericaoutlawed.ca/support. On this episode I speak with Shane Angland about the Radical Reformers of the 16th Century, and how the ideas of the Radical Reformation, though they were initially met with opposition — they have had an incredible impact on Christianity as we know it today, including how the church relates to the government and society as a whole. Furthermore, we discuss some of the lessons we can learn today from the mistakes and missteps of the radical reformers, as well. Shane Angland is a Teaching Elder at Ennis Evangelical Church in County Clare, Ireland. He spent several years as a missionary in Ukraine, and is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theologyforthepeople/support
Jason Landsel, author of a new graphic novel, Jason Landsel, author of a new graphic novel, talks about the Radical Reformation and its legacy. Peter and Susannah give a brief but lively summary of the story of the life of Felix Manz, one of the original Radical Reformers who was a founder of what would become the Anabaptist movement. His story, bound together with the story of Ulrich Zwingli, the Magisterial Reformer of Zurich, raises questions about the role of state authority in the life of the church, freedom of conscience, and the nature of conversion, which are still passionately debated today. Peter and Susannah speak with Jason about the political-theological issues involved, the role of humanism and the return to sources in the Reformation, and the personal story too: Manz had been Zwingli's protégé, almost his surrogate son, before he sentenced him to death. They discuss also the historical background to the debates over baptism and tithes and church membership and independence which fueled the drama of Felix's life, which involved a number of jailbreaks as well as intellectual ferment. The Ottoman armies were advancing, and Catholic Europe and the other Reformed areas were watching as this debate over the future of the Reformation played out in Zurich.
Would you die for your beliefs? Five hundred years ago, in an age marked by war, plague, inequality, and religious coercion, there were people across Europe who dared to imagine a society of sharing, peace, and freedom of conscience. These radicals were ready to die for their vision. They were executed by the thousands—by water, by fire, and by sword—in both Catholic and Protestant states. Next year, Plough Publishing House will present BY WATER: THE FELIX MANZ STORY, the first of a three-volume graphic novel series that dramatically and creatively evokes a little-known chapter in the history of Europe's Reformation. Written by Jason Landsel and featuring art by Sankha Banerjee, BY WATER is a compelling and timely story about young people standing up for truth against the corrupt political and religious leaders of their day. “Felix Manz was the son of a Catholic priest who became an unlikely leader and ultimately the very first martyr of the Radical Reformation,” said writer Jason Landsel. “BY WATER chronicles the real life conflict between Manz and his mentor, the establishment reformer Ulrich Zwingli. Manz revered Zwingli as a father figure, but ended up being drowned on Zwingli's orders for insisting that only believers should be baptized.” “This trilogy tells the story of the radicals from the Reformation period who tried to build an alternative society inspired by Gutenberg's Bible and Thomas More's Utopia,” said Plough Publishing House Editor Sam Hine. “These graphic novels skillfully combine historical figures and events with imagined scenes and encounters to create an ambitious, action-packed and historically accurate account of young people standing up for their convictions.” BY WATER: THE FELIX MANZ STORY will be published by Plough Publishing House on March 21, 2023 and will be followed by subsequent volumes titled BY FIRE and BY SWORD. Plough Publishing House, founded in 1920, is an independent publisher of books on faith, society, and the spiritual life. The company is based in Walden, New York with branches in the United Kingdom and Australia. Plough also publishes Plough Quarterly, a bold new magazine of stories, ideas, and culture to inspire faith and action. Jason Landsel is a New York-based writer and illustrator with a lifelong fascination with the history of social and religious radicalism. As a contributing art director to Plough Quarterly, his artwork is featured in a regular column of the magazine. He is a member of the Bruderhof, an Anabaptist community movement that traces its roots to the Radical Reformation. Sankha Banerjee has illustrated graphic novel adaptations of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Wind in the Willowsand well as graphic historical biographies of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Wright brothers. His works have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon, France, and the India International Centre in Delhi. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Multimedia and Animation, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, India. Richard Mommsen, who assisted in historical research and scriptwriting for By Water, is also a videographer, podcast producer, and director of the Bruderhof's historical archives. “Christians should stop seeking political control and power and just focus on winning the lost.” “Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world' so Christians should stay out of government.” “Neither Jesus nor the early Christians tried to take over Rome. He built His kingdom in people's hearts and minds.” Many variations of this argument can be found in Christian Twitterverse, usually, in response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The idea seems to be that real Christian spirituality neither seeks nor celebrates political or judicial victories. Christians should only be concerned with the things of God, not the things of this world. In other words, God isn't concerned with government, and Christians shouldn't be either. Though this line of thinking sounds quite Christian, it isn't. Rather, it is an inaccurate portrayal of the relationship between God's justice and earthly justice. Just as importantly, it misunderstands what our salvation is for and why God calls us to live in this world, instead of just whisking Christians to heaven the moment we're saved. Recently, my colleague Shane Morris tackled this bad theology on Twitter, and the thread was republished by the Babylon Bee news offshoot, Not the Bee. I'll paraphrase his points: First, for most of the Church's history, Christians have agreed that civil laws should in some way reflect biblical morality. Neither Catholics, Orthodox, nor most Protestants believed that being apolitical was a good or godly thing. While there were occasions over the centuries when Christians shunned political involvement for a variety of reasons, often because they were prohibited from any involvement, it wasn't until the Radical Reformation and movements like the Anabaptists in the 1500s that swearing off politics gained traction as a principle for following Christ. Even then, it was a minority opinion. On the contrary, for most Christians, being a civil magistrate has always been seen as a high and noble calling. This, of course, makes a lot of sense since there is really no such thing as not legislating morality. No matter who writes the laws of a land, those laws always reflect someone's moral beliefs. Protecting innocent lives from deadly violence, something that occurs in abortion and other forms of murder, is the central function of good government. God created government to serve that purpose. Second, Shane pointed out something many theologians have noted over the years: that when Jesus said, “my kingdom is not of this world” in John 18:36, He did not mean “my kingdom has nothing to do with this world.” Rather, He meant that His kingdom is not from this world, does not use this world's methods (such as violent revolution), and does not aim at the world's ends. Still, as Abraham Kuyper pointed out, Jesus' kingdom absolutely does affect this world, over which He has declared total sovereignty, and in which He holds individuals and governments accountable for administering justice and punishing violence against the innocent (see Genesis 9:6). As for the part that neither Christ nor the first Christians tried to take over Rome, anyone who says this should read further in their history books. In A.D. 325, the Emperor Constantine ended the official persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. Just decades later, in the year 380, Emperor Theodosius declared Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. As a matter of simple historical fact, Christians did take over Rome! Setting aside questions about the legitimacy of established religion and how good such an arrangement is for the Church, it's simply not true that early Christianity did not seek to impact earthly governments. Early Christians showed intense interest in impacting governments in everything from the outlawing of infant exposure to ending persecution to the ending of the gladiatorial games. The assault of the Church against the gates of Hell progresses, of course, through the preaching of the Gospel and the conversion of souls—what the Apostle Paul called “spiritual weapons.” But by advocating for good and just governments—especially when it comes to protecting innocent lives—Christians are loving their neighbors and fulfilling the other half of our calling in this world: to pray and obediently work so that God's kingdom will come and His will be done “on earth as it is in Heaven.” We are saved for a purpose. Along with evangelism and worship, we are to be good citizens and to love our neighbors. This will involve supporting righteous laws and opposing wicked ones. No law in this nation's history has been more wicked than Roe v. Wade. Therefore, Christians are right to celebrate its downfall and to work to undo its bloody legacy. And Christians are right to oppose other wicked legislative efforts, such as the misleadingly named “Respect for Marriage Act.” The idea that Christians have a calling so high that it keeps us from politics may sound spiritual, but it's something almost no Christian in history would recognize. Nor would Jesus, who in the same conversation with Pilate where He said, “my kingdom is not of this world,” also reminded this government official where his power came from.
The Reformation truths bombs have been released but even so, there is radical ideas and factions as the Reformation continues.

The main figures of the reformation such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and Zwingli are part of what is known as the Magisterial Reformation. There was another wing of the reformation that was known as the Radical Reformation. Dr Dojčin Živadinovic takes us through this very crucial history and shares why we have much more in common with this less known, smaller branch of the reformation than we sometimes think. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Protestant Missionaries Going to China, 1 of 2 In this episode, we look at one of the key parties playing a part in the Taiping Rebellion: foreign Protestant Christian missionaries. Christianity is a universal faith (it means you too!) with a message revolutionary in magnitude. Though it isn't the main player, it's a critical background player. Quick Rundown of Church History Christianity was founded by Christ. All of the ancient churches (Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, etc.) share formal liturgy, a literary/literate core and a complementary oral culture, and a formal hierarchy. Around 1500, in the Roman Catholic Church, the Protestant Reformation took off against a series of abuses and rampant corruption. It got ahead of the Catholic hierarchy's ability to control it, and so there's that now. The introduction of printing was key to the ethos of the Protestant Reformation. The centrality of a religious text (the Bible) and the increased accessibility of literature made sharing the Protestant message much, much easier. The Magisterial Reformation was the first stream of Protestantism. It kept a lot in common with its Roman Catholic origins—as much of a force for revolution that it was. The Radical Reformation went even further, further emphasizing conscious personal conversion and explicit profession of faith. It was a further break from centuries of authority and tradition. When Protestants started to send missionaries, print was a primary way they shared their message—and so that's how the founder of the Taiping movement got the resources he started out with. What This Means for China Messengers coming with a universal religion, revolutionary message, sharing their message in print. They are driven to share their spiritual and moral message, no matter what happens next. And it's entering the ferment that is China at this time. Why We Make Music, Part 1: Peter and Susannah open the Music issue podcast series with a discussion of Anabaptist music: the beautiful and occasionally grim songs of the Radical Reformation. But what is music for anyway? They talk about music as a crucial aspect of the human Telos, and the need for the body of Christ to worship Him in song. The sheer power of music has been recognized in all the philosophical traditions of the world as well: music can call out the best in you, and can make you worse. It is not something to be taken lightly. Then they bring on Mary Townsend to talk about Dolly Parton and her exhibition of the Aristotelian virtues of magnificence and magnanimity: the way in which she spends money out of thoughtful love for the public good, and the way that her generosity in song reflects a fundamentally Christian experience of having been given a gift of song. In this way, Dolly may serve as a truly Christian corrective of Aristotle's more masculine and humorless magnanimous man. The petite blonde woman from Tennessee may be the closest thing we have to a living example of public and thoughtful greatness that is also good and beautiful. Read the transcript. In the west, the Church cannot afford to be sheltered in privilege and ignore the challenges, victories, and kingdom creativity happening in Jesus-centred communities in the developing world. Putting Jesus at the centre means we must learn from our global and often marginalized brothers and sisters in how they're putting Jesus at the centre and the ways they're advancing kingdom creativity. Join us for a fascinating, challenging, and awakening conversation with César Garcia, the General Secretary of Mennonite World Conference (MWC). England's Reformation was supposed to bind the nation into a single 'Church of England'. In fact the country was shattered into a kaleidoscope of religious variety. Amid the confusion, a few English people embraced radical possibilities: mystics turned religion into an allegory, separatists created democratic, self-governing communes, utopians explored ideas ranging from pacifism to full-blown revolution. This lecture traces how this radical edge of the English Reformation helped shape some of the most apparently secular aspects of the modern world.A lecture by Alec RyrieThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/radical-reformationGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. The Violence of Love, Part 5: Felix Manz was the first martyr of the Radical Reformation, drowned by his fellow Christians for performing adult baptisms. His story is a story of a world on fire with commitment to Christ, with friends who became enemies wrestling over nonviolence, justice for the poor, and the meaning of the gospel. Pete and Susannah discuss what his time has to say to ours. Then, they catch up with Rachel Pieh Jones, whose eighteen years living among Somali Muslims has taught her more than she could have imagined about her own Christian faith. Her book, Pillars, released recently with Plough Books, describes this journey of friendship and discovery. Pete and Susannah also talk about Bruderhof Easter Gardens, and almost-post-vaccination life in New York City. Read the transcript. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this Episode we take a break from the historical narrative of the Separatists to talk about the difference between credobaptism (believer's baptism) and paedobaptism (infant baptism). Did the earliest Christians baptize babies? If so, why aren't there any examples in Scripture? If not, how did the ordinance come to be imbued with such ceremonial pomp? Why didn't it end with the Reformation? And why was believer's baptism met with such militant resistance? In this episode we are continuing the story of John Smyth and John Robinson's congregations as they escape from England and head to Amsterdam in 1607/1608. This moment is important for a number of reasons, but two particular things stand out: 1) Smyth baptizes his congregation as believing adults (believer's baptism), which was deemed a heresy during Medieval Christianity and 2) Robinson leads a faction of the group to the city of Leiden, where they worship until their decision to travel to America as pilgrims in 1620. We will be focused mostly on the actions of Smyth, as he is credited with forming the first Baptist church in Holland in 1609 – though not necessarily prototypical. Other subjects discussed in the episode are the “Radical Reformation” and the differences between paedobaptism (infant baptism) and credobaptism (believer's baptism). Lastly, we end with Smyth's defection to join the Mennonites and Helwys' courageous move to return to England and fight for religious liberty in his homeland.
