She sings & duets her original compositions and eclectic repertoire of standards in English, Spanish, French and sometimes German and Hebrew. Her performance range is just as wide, spanning opera, theater and burlesque. From blues to filk, from opera to indie, Mandee's range is nothing short of breathtaking. Her CDs include "Life Just Goes On", "Torch of Blue" and "Merry ChristmaChannaKwanzaa Vol 1.1", "Hey Phat Chick! (Ya Got it Comin' to You!)", and "A Decidedly Creepy EP". During the summer of 2015, Phat Man Dee produced her web video series “Take it to the Bridge with Phat Man Dee” where she jammed with musicians and artists on bridges in a 12 country tour, 15 city tour of Europe. Her most recent full length work was a 12 song CD “Songs to Fight Fascists By!” with "Social Justice Disco", a collaborative musical project with Liz Berlin, co founder of Rusted Root. This excited socially minded creation features over 60 musicians, dancers, and spoken word artists. Since the pandemic she has released two singled "Everybody Hurts" which is a cover of R.E.M.'s composition, "MasQue Up!" which is an original song written as a love letter to the trans and LBGTQIA community, and "Save You, Save Me" which will be available December 11, 2020 and includes musicians from all over the world. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amapofmyevolution/support
On January 4, 2020, Very Local was part of hosting New Year/ New Galaxy, a performance from the jazz/funk/pop/hip-hop band Starship Mantis at Black Forge Coffee Shop II in McKees Rocks. The event came together with the help of Buzzy Torek from Epicast. Epicast is a podcast production shop that works on many Pittsburgh podcasts including The Slaw: Staying on Top of Pittsburgh. In this episode, Aadam & Stephanie talk to Starship Mantis, and the owners of Black Forge, Dancing Gnome and Epicast about how they collaborate and what collaborations mean to local businesses and artists. IT'S A CELEBRATION! Last month this show turned 5 years old so I put together a really cool live panel to chat about all of our positive experiences navigating the "behind the scenes" of the "scene" and how to GET THINGS DONE! Guests include Connor Murray of Crafted Sounds, Icky Vicky of Icky Vicky's Brokenheart Sideshow, Ashley Bianca Corts of Black Forge Coffee House and Mario Fusca of Special Sessions Live. Sit back, relax and let's START THE BEAT! ALSO AVAILABLE ON: Spotify Apple Google Stitcher YouTube Instagram
The Drinking Partners welcome Black Forge Coffee owners Ashley Corts and Nick Miller, who Ed introduces as, “the og’est of the OGs.” The duo stops by the studio to announce Black Forge’s expansion; after three years in the Allentown neighborhood, the metal-themed coffee shop will open an additional spot in McKees Rocks. The early minutes examine how Black Forge has welcomed art, comedy, and music, and now features live music several days per week. The interview flows with a smooth vibe, as Nick and Ashley speak on how they first met and what led them to ultimately open Black Forge. Hint: they both wanted to stop working for sh**y people. However, the podcast offers an invigorating and encouraging message, from how they crowd-funded for their second location to how they value their employees. And, of course, it gives Nick an, “excuse to get day drunk,” as they sip on a coffee-flavored mead that Black Forge collaborated on with Apis Wine and Meadery. As the hour progresses, the conversation becomes much more Drinking Partners-like, with hilarious results. In the closing minutes, Ed and Day continue a new Drinking Partners tradition and ask for Ashley and Nick to name their favorite potato. Stay tuned to hear their answers (and a NSFW admission from Ed). Find Black Forge Coffee House here: http://www.blackforgecoffee.com.
In this episode, Mario and Hoon talk about things. Lots of things. Things like cooking, football, crime, growing up in a gritty neighborhood, being popular in high school, playing in a band, celebrities, standup comedy and hosting his new live talk show, "Special Sessions Live" held at Black Forge Coffee House in Pittsburgh PA. Though the conversation is lighthearted, and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to, Mario's own personal disruption lies within the way he reflects on all of his changes and transitions, and his positive outlook that he carries with him throughout. Please enjoy. Share. Comment. And remember: keep on disrupting, always.
This week I sat down at Epicast Studios to talk to the second half of Black Forge Coffee House, Nick Miller. I've seen Nick at different events around the city and we have a lot of mutual friends but I didn't know that much about him so I was excited to sit down with see where he came from. I had his partner Ashley on the Podcast awhile ago and we had an awesome conversation about BFCH and what they've been doing the last few years and how they were looking to open a new location. I loved hearing what she had to say so I definitely wanted to hear the other side of things and how Nick came into the picture. I mean who opens a Dark Metal Coffee Shop anyway? Two dope ass people who believe in themselves. I'm happy to know them and support what they do. Make sure you go back into the archives and check out my episode with Ashley Corts as well! #111 Greywalker Metal Band- Brian Howe and Ricky Zimerman When someone asks me to describe metal music, I can't. I know zero, zip, ziltch about metal bands. I have a friend in Pittsburgh who is part of the Epicast family named Brian Howe that intrigued me when I found out he is the lead singer of a metal band in Pittsburgh called Greywalker. Brian and I have hung out occasionally, he always saves the day for my lack of technical audio skills.(He has mad skills) We even recorded a short 1 minute video where I taught him why he should pack light while he travels. Brian has a soft spoken voice, and seems to be one of the nicest, and wittiest people I have come across in town. When I learned he sings in a metal band, I was floored. He runs his own podcast that is called Start The Beat with Sikes, where he interviews people in the music industry, so he is used to talking, but a metal band? Really? I was fascinated, and if you subscribe to my podcast (Which you totally should), you would know that if it is something I don't know a lot about, and am intrigued by it, I want it on my show. What is metal all about? I have to admit my taste varies all over the spectrum, but it has never dipped into metal. Like most music listeners, the deepest I went was Metalica. I am finding out now that that isn't very deep. If I am being honest with myself, I really wanted to find out if these guys were angry. They sound angry, are they filled with rage all the time? I assumed so based on some of the music. I got to sit with Brian and other band member Ricky Zimerman to chat with them about their music, being a self starter, and balancing work and hobbies. I liked what I heard in their songs, although not my normal taste, I found it intriguing that there was yet another layer to Pittsburgh's ever growing underground scenes that I don't know about. Greywalker has a cult following around the world too, not just in our hometown. Their new album drops on July 7th and they are celebrating with a release party at the Rex. It is sure to be an awesome time. We also had a surprise guest stop by! Nick Miller from Black Forge Coffee House has been on my show before to talk about how him and co owner Ashley Cortes Black have turned themselves into 16 bit characters for Coffee Crisis. All the good folk connect and collaborate in this town, which is why it is no surprise that Greywalker pitched in to help with the soundtrack of this game! How fun is that. Speaking of collaborations, these guys have their own hot sauce. Now that, is success my friend. Really I would have loved to release this episode for the lead up to Halloween. I feel as though it would be fitting, but alas, here it is. Enjoy! The episode is sponsored by Levity, Pittsburgh's premier sensory deprivation experience. Located in Squirrrel Hill on Murray Ave, Levity will have you relaxing in no time at all. All listeners get $5 off with code "Marta"
