The guys try to recoup after a rough day all around for them and their respective NFL teams.
"Automatic for the People" refers to the motto of Athens, Georgia-based eatery Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods, after the phrase the restaurant's owner Dexter Weaver says to his customers instead of "you're welcome." We're ratcheting down the tempo and ratcheting up the drama on this one but will Kev find it all a bit pedestrian? Will Corey understand what the hell Michael is talking about in Try Not to Breathe? And will Kev pull away from Corey completely in the season-long game? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and drive.Songs covered in this episode: "Drive", "Try Not to Breathe", "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite", "Everybody Hurts", "New Orleans Instrumental No. 1", "Sweetness Follows"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashTwitter: https://twitter.com/UCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/mz9ymTwSSE Hosted on Acast. If a person's mix tape is filled with meaningful songs, the Bible's "mix tape” would be the Book of Psalms. Together, we'll study several of these powerful hymns, poems, and prayers during our popular summer sermon series, “Mix Tape.” Volume 6 launches tomorrow!
If you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on. The melody and the singing make you think it's a sad song, until you listen closely to the lyrics. Instead, Hurts is a song of encouragement, hope and an anti-suicide anthem simply aimed at teenagers. You know what? It actually works! Many people have contacted the band to tell them how the song changed their lives. The song talks about connection, and our need to realize that everyone goes through the tough stuff - so we shouldn't give up! That's pretty good news, but not quite the real Good News. We are going to look at several responses of desperate people in history and how they sought out hope and meaning in their lives and how it's similar, or different, from R.E.M.'s message to hurting teens.

The Big Mates discuss death threats, protest songs, milk toast, and Around the Sun by R.E.M.Adam, Steve, and Lucas continue their deep dive into the career and discography of R.E.M. by concluding their analysis of the band's thirteenth studio album, released in 2004. They talk about the writing and recording process, the context surrounding the songs, and offer up analysis, opinions, and thoughts from three differing perspectives on music, from being deeply into analysis and music, to not caring for art or critique, and everything in between. They continue with their track-by-track analysis of the album and explore why the record is often considered the band's weakest. They then sum up how they feel about Around the Sun, how it was received at the time of release, and how that perception may have changed in the intervening years. What do we think of Around the Sun? Why is it different to Everybody Hurts? Is it a melodica? When proposing an episode for this week's show, the goal was to put focus on a tour that we haven't discussed a whole lot on this podcast - the 2011 Canadian tour. The question here was which show would be the one to cover. So we crowd sourced it and got some great answers, but the best answer was a suggestion to do the episode in tribute of former Calgary Flames star, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were tragically killed recently. This made the Calgary 2011 show a no brainer to talk about. There is a big storyline that looms over this show. This happened to be the same day that R.E.M. called it a career. Hearing the band react to the news and play a very impassioned touching tribute to them with the song It Happened Today has been the consensus call back moment from this show. Pearl Jam could have made a decision to play one of their more well known radio singles like Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts or Man On The Moon, but we'll talk about how they selected the right song for the right moment. There are also songs in this setlist that connect to something that the band has done recently such as Brain Of J, Rats, Crazy Mary and even something relevant in concerns to Johnny Guitar! R.E.M. spent the decade after Murmur growing steadily more successful, their popularity cresting with the 1991 #1 album Out of Time and its inescapable hit single “Losing My Religion.” But instead of going on an exhausting world tour like most bands would, R.E.M. went right back into the studio and recorded Automatic for the People, an album that defies rock star excess at nearly every turn. You probably know “Everybody Hurts” and “Man on the Moon,” which are still radio standards to this day, and with good reason. But even those songs were much more downcast and introspective than one would expect from a band at the height of their popularity. Automatic for the People is the sound of R.E.M. entering their thirties and taking stock of their place in both music and the world, and though it may take some time to sink in, John, Phil, Rich, and special guest Jeff Blehar all consider it one of their best albums. So join us for part 2 of a band that cannot be contained by one episode, and calluswhenyoutrytowakeherup.Cohosts: John McFerrin, Phil Maddox, Rich Bunnell, Jeff BleharComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/140-rem-automatic-for-the-people-1992Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

In 1982 Eric Cassell published his landmark essay: On the Nature of Suffering and the Goals of Medicine. Though his narrow definition of suffering as injured or threatened personhood has been critiqued, the central concept was a motivating force for many of us to enter the fields of geriatrics and palliative care, Eric and I included. Today we talk about suffering in the many forms we encounter in palliative care. Our guests are BJ Miller, palliative care physician and c-founder of Mettle Health, and Naomi Saks, chaplain at UCSF. We discuss: How to respond when a nurse or trainee says, “I think this patient is suffering,” but the family does not share that perception The trap in comparing one person's suffering to another person's suffering How to respond to suffering, from naming to rebirth Ways in which suffering can bring meaning and purpose, or at the very least co-exist alongside growth and transformation The extent to which elimination of suffering ought to be a goal of palliative medicine (with a nod to Tolstoy) A simple 2 sentence spiritual assessment Credit to my son Kai Smith on guitar on Everybody Hurts for those listening to audio only (hand still splinted at time of this recording) -@AlexSmithMD Additional links: Screening for suffering: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27714532/ and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35195465/ and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31387655/ Evans CB, Larimore LR, Grasmick VE.
