MLB proposed a system where player arbitration-eligible players would earn salaries dictated by WAR metrics. WAR is a good metric, but it does have its flaws. What are some downfalls of this approach? Former Blue Jays southpaw Brett Cecil has called it a career. It looks like some big-name free agents will sign in the next few weeks. All this (and more) on today's episode.
In a hard hitting episode, we catch up with former Blue Jay Brett Cecil for a remarkably frank discussion about the path his life has taken since he left Toronto. We also talk with Barry's friend Mio Yokoi, who has recently begun documenting her battle against cancer. Despite dealing with some heavy topics this week, both Brett and Mio take this episode to a seriously positive and uplifting place!

News on Carlos Martinez, Brett Cecil's new delivery and the Cardinals rotation with Brian Walton of thecardinalnation.com We get into the issues with testing, the likelihood of a season and the players who may be used as reserve. What does Nashville have to do with that? Also, is there truth to losing the home-field advantage with the schedule as it stands now? Is it about the field, fans or about being with one's family at home? Listen here:
Injury updates, coronavirus issues in MLB and media coverage, and more with Derrick Goold. We break down exactly what could be different for fans as far as news stories go? How is Paul Goldschmidt's elbow? Will his availability for the season opener be affected? Miller threw a more aggressive bullpen session on Wednesday. How did it go? He's made it through a battery of tests with nothing conclusive. Brett Cecil is again bitten by the injury bug. Another MRi is slated for him. Wainwright gets the start today. We talk his camp and more on his future with the club. Listen here:
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals game from Tuesday Feb. 25. Plenty of talk on Alex Reyes, how he looked, what he said afterward. Brett Cecil, Austin Gomber, Dylan Carlson chatter as well. A few audio clips from the players. You know the drill. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bschaeffer12/message
Looking forward to the pitching in today’s game against the WS champion Nationals. Austin Gomber gets the start. He missed most last year with an elusive injury. Derrick says, this year, Gomber has much better defense around him so that could be a boon. Knizner said Gomber’s new cutter could be a real difference maker. It will be great to see Alex Reyes today too. He looks slimmer, more athletic. Brett Cecil is on the list as well. He will pitch a lot this spring to figure out what the club has in him. Sosa continues to be a guy to watch. Derrick Goold says it’s likely he makes it on the opening day roster. Derrick also says Brad Miller is a left handed Jedd Gyorko with pop. Listen here:
First game tomorrow and we talk the starter, Jack Flaherty's, focus and drive. Goold calls him a "precision monster" and we talk about Flaherty's preparation being similar to Kobe Bryant. What is the plan for Dakota Hudson cutting down on walks? What is he doing to change it up? To refine? Dan says he's intrigued to watch Brett Cecil too. Is he on the comeback trail? It's do or die for him this year. Derrick has some surprisingly nice things to say about how Cecil has looks so far. We end discussing "KK" Kim and his role. We'll see him briefly tomorrow. Told you it would happen! A double dose of Blue Jays talk is coming at you today! And it's supersized! A.J. Andrews begins by discussing the Toronto Sun's Rob Longley's report on the attendance problems facing the Blue Jays this season. While not as dire as it looks, Andrews offers solutions based on her own experience and what Rogers can do to make sure the cash continues to flow. The second half begins with the help of @KarenSoutar1, who listed nine Blue Jays and asked how many would remain when the team contends again. Signs are good for most, but there is a direct clash on the horizon between two members of Karen's list. Finally, A.J. blasts one of the top trending articles in Blue Jays land, an attempt to construct the 2020 Toronto roster that makes absolutely no sense. Tim Mayza is traded. Brett Cecil, Corey Dickerson, Collin McHugh and Shelby Miller are all added. Spelling errors abound. It is mind-boggling. She read it so you don't have to. For the last time in what should be a while (though of course you never know), Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) get together on a Monday evening to talk about the past week of Cardinal baseball. The Cards have started to pare down their roster and some notable names are already down with the minor leaguers. Were there really any surprises about who went down and who is still around camp? Brett Cecil is still dealing with a lot of things and now seems to need to add some of the weight he lost. Is this going to turn out well for him or the Cardinals? The guys then talk about Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks getting their contracts renewed and what things look like for Dexter Fowler. A bit shorter show but they'll be back Friday and they didn't want you to get tired of them!
It's the first ever Chirps Mail Bag episode! Alex and Tara took your questions and, after talking about Bryce Harper one last time, answered them in long-winded fashion. What? There's a lot to be said about Tyler O'Neill and Brett Cecil! The outfield is crowded, and the bullpen is, too. Is there room for everyone's favorites? And, to prepare you for the Chirp of the Week, who would YOU call "Mr. March"? Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. Another season is starting, both in baseball and for Gateway, and Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Birds on the Black, @tarawellman) start diving into the Cardinal news of the day. Adam Wainwright elaborated on his thoughts about the current labor market and issues, something the commissioner seemed to take offense over. Was it wise for Uncle Charlie to speak out? Brett Cecil lost a lot last year and has lost a lot of pounds this year. Can he be an effective lefty and, if so, how does that complicate even more the bullpen? It may not be the longest show, but you have to warm up and stretch before hitting the drills, right?
Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. The Redbirds are on a roll right now, winning five of seven this week even as they ended it with a loss to the Brewers and therefore out of the playoff picture. Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Tara (Bird Seeds, @tarawellman) are still pretty happy with this team and are excited about their run from "let's plan for October" to "wow, even the division is within reach." Lots of great things happened this week and there's plenty of news as well. So tune in to hear your favorite hosts talk about Greg Garcia, Luke Weaver, Carlos Martinez, Brett Cecil, and even more. You know you want to!
3:00 - Ronge is wrong. We're all right. 3:15 - Jen Langosch on the Cardinals continued surge and the addition of Brett Cecil on the roster 3:30 - Hot Topics 3:45 - MLB Network's Bill Ripken on players moving away from analystics if it doesn't fit their game and the Cards as playoff hopefuls
Ever want to hear a couple of Cardinal bloggers react to news in basically real time? That's what you've got this week as Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (Red Dirt Redbird, @amedlock1) sit down to record right as the Cardinals completely overhaul their bullpen. This wasn't just getting a couple of tires rotated, this was reworking the whole engine. (Please note, I am not a car guy so this is as far as I can go with the analogy.) Sam Tuivailala? Traded. Greg Holland? Nice knowing you. Brett Cecil? Conveniently spared by the DL. Then there was Tyler Lyons. #70. The #PatronPitcher, going the same route as Holland. Somehow, Daniel was able to hold back the tears. Plenty of new faces as well. Luke Weaver returns, as does Daniel Poncedeleon from his short trip back after his no-hit debut. This weekend will also see the first Cardinal apperances by Tyler Webb (not quite the same, Cardinals) and Dakota Hudson as the Cards mull what else to do before the 4 PM Tuesday deadline. The guys also give their thoughts on whether some Cardinals will be still here on August 1 and what the news about Chris Archer being a target means. It might be a bit jumbled, but it's a thorough look at everything that's happened!
Oh boy what a weird time. The Cardinals have seen historical offense, incredible debuts, no-hitters disrupted by fire alarms and bullpen implosions. So where are we? The Cardinals LOOK like they're playing better, but the results are still the same. The bullpen is largely to blame, but there's some missing offense too. JJ sits down with Producer Mike to talk this bizarre week. Why is Marcell Ozuna still hitting fourth? Should the Cardinals cut ties with Brett Cecil and Greg Holland? What about Dexter Fowler? Was the fire alarm in Cincinnati an inside job?! We get into all of that in more in this week's episode. Sit back, plug in, and enjoy!

Another frustrating week for the Cardinals, culminating in two losses to the Royals and another to Pittsburgh. Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (The Redbird Daily, @amedlock1) are pretty confounded by it all and don't have the answers. Well, beyond the fact that people should start hitting and doing it consistently. That might help things. Plenty of talk about the unfulfilling offense segues into some disappointing relief work. Greg Holland apparently gives up two runs every time he pitches now. John Brebbia has been struggling. Brett Cecil probably shouldn't be called on to just get lefties out. With all this depressing news, there is a ray of hope. Well, make that a Reyes. Alex Reyes has dominated throughout his rehab tour and capped it with a mind-boggling outing in Memphis. He's coming. Let's just hope the Cards can score some runs for him.
Mike Matheny, Lance Lynn and Brett Cecil discuss the Cardinals' walk-off loss.
So you're four weeks into the season and your team looks like a dumpster fire? No worries, with our tips and tricks we can help you build that Brett Cecil of a team into an Aroldis Chapman!
Brett Cecil. Jaime Garcia. Seth Maness. Dexter Fowler. How in the world can Daniel Shoptaw (C70 At The Bat) and Tara Wellman (Bird Seeds) get through all of these moves in 30 minutes. They're professionals (except for the being paid part of that definition) so don't try this at home. Daniel and Tara talk about what the team looks like now, what these moves meant, and if John Mozeliak might have some other moves up his sleeve. Plenty of St. Louis Cardinal baseball to discuss here folks!
Shi Davidi of Sportsnet stops by to discuss the upcoming Winter Meetings, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Jays offseason plans as they relate to budget and potential free agent targets. Greg and Josh also discuss Brett Cecil's departure, Edwin Encarnacion rumours, and then run down the numerous players to whom the Jays have been connected this offseason. Mike Silva discusses the latest rumors with Yoenis Cespedes and predicts the Mets will sign the star outfielder by the Winter Meetings. He also feels that relief pitching will get overvalued this winter and explains why. With Neil Walker now re-signed and 5 players added to the 40-man roster, what is next for the Mets? Can any of the additions help in 2017? What does the Brett Cecil contract mean for Jerry Blevins? How can a potential 26-man roster change the way team's view the 40-man? How did Gavin Cecchini and other members of the Mets organization perfer in the AFL? Michael Mayer of Metsmerizedonline.com gives his take to round out this week’s program.

This deal officially marks the end of his tenure with the Blue Jays and we bid him farewell with another edition of Fill in the Blank.
