Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, July 13, 2024. Jobs & Hope tackles the substance abuse crisis by helping those in recovery obtain job training and employment…West Virginia Botanic Garden celebrates the opening of its new visitor center…and Concord University becomes a leader in the increasingly popular e-sports industry…on today's daily304. #1 – From JOBS & HOPE –  Do you have a barrier to employment?  Jobs & Hope West Virginia is the state's comprehensive response to the substance use disorder crisis.  Established by Governor Jim Justice and the West Virginia Legislature, this program offers support through a statewide collaboration of agencies that provide West Virginians in recovery the opportunity to obtain career training and to ultimately secure meaningful employment. Learn more: https://jobsandhope.wv.gov/   #2 – From DOMINION POST – Local organizations and community members gathered recently to celebrate the opening of the West Virginia Botanic Garden's new Equitrans Midstream Visitors Center.  The Visitors Center is housed in a new facility emulating the modern, elegant style of the garden's popular event venue, The Terrace at Tibbs Run. The facility features an eye-catching gift shop for nature lovers of all kinds, information desk, and rear patio overlooking a garden. Also in the works is the addition of a snack cafe, tentatively projected for summer 2025. The center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. For more information, visit WVBG.org. The Athens, West Virginia school made history when it became the first public university in West Virginia to create a competitive program for e-sports, an organized form of video gaming that's often played in front of spectators. Since the program began in 2019, the school has fielded National Championship teams nearly every year. The Concord Maroon Team captured the 2024 title in the Eastern College Athletic Conference by taking down Brewton-Parker College. Concord University's E-Sports Team Director Austin Clay, who created the “e-sports management” major, says the major is very fluid and conforms to the interests of the students. “Right now, e-sports is a $2 billion industry and looking to become a $12 billion industry by 2030, so we want to make sure our students coming through Concord, competing in e-sports, can get a job within that industry, as it's a rapid-growing industry within the tax sector,” Clay said. Greetings everyone! In this podcast, Christian and I had the opportunity to interview a mentor that is dear to our hearts, Steve Edwards. He serves as the women's basketball head coach and the campus pastor at Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA. BPC is where Christian and I both got our B.A. degrees in Christian Studies. Throughout this podcast, Steve shares his story and discusses his life as a minister. Throughout the conversation, we spent a lot of time just discussing ministry from all of our perspectives and sharing some important advice from experience and scripture about "Ministry Lifers" as Steve called it! There is wrestling. This is more than likely a test of how much of a wrestling fan you’re going to make yourself. There is limited action around the country, but the men and women in the NAIA are competing. The NAIA released its first Women’s Coaches Poll of the season on Monday and Wayland Baptist comes in No. 1, ahead of Campbellsville, Grand View, Menlo and Life. Wayland just recently lost its head coach as Aaron Meister left to go back to his native Kansas to start the men’s and women’s program at Friends University in Wichita.

Speaking of Life, coach Ashley Sword’s team was in action over the weekend and topped Indiana Tech and the University of the Cumberlands. Indiana Tech was wrestling its first ever women’s dual matches in school history. Life won 39-5 while the University of the Cumberlands edged Indiana tech 25-23.

Life beat Brewton-Parker 42-4 on Monday night as well.
On the men’s side of things, third-ranked Reinhardt opened up 2-0 after a trip to Florida, beating Keiser 55-0 and fifth-ranked Southeastern 24-19. Southeastern beat Keiser 49-6.

Coleman Bryant of Southeastern knocked off Cole Tenety 3-1 in sudden victory at 174 pounds in a matchup of returning All-Americans. Former Indiana Hooser Blake Rypel has resurfaced on the college mats, he’s at Southeastern. He won his debut by fall at 184 for the Fire. Reinhardt did pick up powerful bonus victories from returning All-Americans Trent Leon, Nolan Saxton and Antonio Stewart to power coach Jeff Bedard’s Eagles.

In other action on Monday, Brewton-Parker College beat Central Baptist (Ark.) 53-3, while St. Andrews beat the Central Baptist 42-15. No official score from St. Andrews and Brewton-Parker, but I’m told it was 43-9 in favor of Brewton-Parker. Not the first time I’ve had to chase down the opposing team looking for a score from a wrestling event held at BPC, but I digress.
Here’s what went down since the last time I gave a scoreboard update:
Jamestown (N.D.) beat Northwestern (Iowa) 24-22.
Arizona Christian beat Hastings 28-15
No. 7 Indiana Tech beat Thomas More 26-21
No. 4 Lindsey Wilson got a pair of big W’s, shutting out Missouri Baptist 55-0 and beating Williams Baptist 46-3. Williams Baptist beat Missouri Baptist 42-12 in the other dual there.

Earlier in the week, Benedictine (Kan.) beat Central Methodist 27-18, while Ottawa (Kan.) beat Oklahoma Wesleyan 43-12. New coaching alert in Division II where Ohio State alum Colt Sponseller is now the new head coach at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. Josh Hutchens stepped down back in September. … while NCAA qualifier Michael Blockhus will land at Minnesota after announcing he was leaving Northern Iowa a few days ago.

REV. BOBBY GAYLE’S TESTIMONY I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior as a child and I have continued to grow and mature in my faith over my whole life.  Thirty years ago I married the love of my life and we have 4 beautiful children.  Three of them have married and one is in college. We have 6 grandchildren, but 2 of them are living with our Lord.  Noah was born in 2007 and he lived for a week and baby Blackwood was a miscarriage in 2009. At 25 years of age, I answered my call to full-time ministry. I have been afforded the opportunity to work out my sanctification through the United Methodist Church. I have an A.A. in ministry and a Bachelor of Ministry from Brewton Parker College. After completing those degrees, I obtained a Master of Divinity from Emory University. I served 17 years in local United Methodist churches as a pastor. I love the local church and its ministries. I served the Trinity Circuit in Toombs County for 3 ½ years, then I served the Irwinton-Toomsboro-Salem Charge in Wilkinson County for 13 ½ years. We assisted approximately 10 people into full-time ministry.  I have always been involved in Christian missions. Over the years, I have continually heard the cries of the poor, the needy and the least. Like my earlier call, I simply said, "here I am, Lord".   Seven years ago, we began a ministry called "Unto the least of His" based out of Matthew 25.
