Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review   Episode Details: Georgia trial lawyer and nurse Tracey Dellacona of Dellacona Law Firm, LLC shares how she strategically represented emergency room patient Ellen Wadsworth, whose misdiagnosed pain resulted in the amputation of both of her legs. On Thanksgiving Day in 2008, Ellen arrived at the hospital with severe pain in both of her legs and cold feet, which a physician's assistant -- after only a brief physical exam and vein testing -- determined to be cellulitis, a type of bacterial skin infection. Despite Ellen's inability to walk and pleas to be admitted to the hospital, the supervising doctor and physician's assistant sent her home with morphine. Hours later, Ellen returned to the emergency room after collapsing in her home, and it was discovered that she had arterial blockages in both of her lower legs. On December 4, 2008, Ellen underwent a double leg amputation below the knee. The defendants argued that Ellen's symptoms and physical conditions were entirely different at each emergency room visit and tried to place blame on Ellen's smoking and pre-existing medical conditions. In 2012, a Gwinnett County, Georgia jury found in favor of Ellen, awarding her $5 million in damages and charging the attending healthcare professionals and medical practice with ordinary negligence.  Read/Download Trial Documents   Guest Bio: Tracey Dellacona Ms. Dellacona graduated cum laude in 1985 from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and worked as an emergency department nurse and cardiac care nurse for several years in North Carolina before moving to Georgia to attend law school. For the 100th episode, we had to go out and bring you all a legend. Please welcome Bill Rodgers to D3 Glory Days. The 4x Boston and NYC Marathon winner, Olympian and Wesleyan graduate walked us through his career. From the early days, Rodgers enjoyed running with his friend and brother as it was a fun activity to do with a group. As he progressed through his high school days, he saw his potential to get better. The idea of going to a big state school was overwhelming and he went 15 miles down the road to Wesleyan College. His teammate and mentor Amby Burfoot played a big role in Bill's motivation to move to the marathon after college. Amby won the Boston Marathon in 1968 while he was a student at Wesleyan. Rodgers took time away from running after college as the Vietnam War made things feel insignificant. After living on the Boston Marathon course and seeing the race, Bill got the spark he needed to get back to training. In 1973, he ran his first Boston Marathon but dropped out at mile 20 and walked home. By 1975, Rodgers figured out it out and won the Boston Marathon in 2:09:55 - which was an American Record at the time. Rodgers would go on to win Boston and New York 4 times each, competed in the 1976 Olympic games and competed in 60 marathons. Rodgers also played a vital role in brining professionalism to the sport of running. He worked with other athletes to fight for the pay they deserved. This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Tracey Dellacona of Dellacona Law Firm, LLC (http://www.dellaconalaw.com/). Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents     Guest Bio: Tracey Dellacona Ms. Dellacona graduated cum laude in 1985 from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and worked as an emergency department nurse and cardiac care nurse for several years in North Carolina before moving to Georgia to attend law school. During this episode we dug in and talked about anxiety and depression, and just how important it is to identify if you are going through times of stress when you should look for help during those hard times. Anxiety and Depression are normal, and you aren't in this alone. There is so many people in your community who have had experiences with anxiety or depression. Especially in the military life as it breeds anxiety and depression when you are constant living in the unknown. We talked about some great ways to use self-care to manage anxiety and depression, but also knowing the importance of reaching out to a good counselor or doctor when things you are doing on your own just aren't allowing you to live your life fully and you need a little help. We often resist the idea of seeking help for anything and it doesn't make you weak, instead it really allows you to learn how to be your strongest. We talked about quite a few really good resources all of which are listed here: Military One Source: https://www.militaryonesource.mil/ Cohen Clinic: cohenveteransnetwork.org Military Chaplain: Reach out to your SFRG leader or your spouses command to use this free resource. In today's episode, Nick Warnes has a dialogue with Nikki Collins. The Rev. Nikki Collins is the coordinator for the 1001 New Worshiping Communities (NWC) initiative in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). She previously served as stated clerk and mission coordinator in the Cherokee Presbytery, and prior to that, founded Bare Bulb Coffee, a 1001 NWC in Georgia. Nikki's experience as a leader at the presbytery and NWC level has prepared her to be a bridge and interpreter for new worshiping community projects being developed around the country. She hopes to give additional shape, color and character to the 1001 movement in ways that will help the PC(USA) more fully embrace and learn from new worshiping communities being created. Nikki Collins began serving as the Coordinator for 1001 New Worshiping Communities in June 2018. Previously she served Cherokee Presbytery as Stated Clerk and Mission Coordinator and, before that, as the founder of Bare Bulb Coffee, a rich brew of full-service coffee shop, music and arts venue, and home to a diverse group of disciples committed to shedding light in the world. She graduated with a degree in psychology and religion from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia and earned her M.Div at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Nikki makes her home in Chattanooga, TN and is the mother of two young adult sons and the shepherd of a herd of spirited dogs and a lazy cat. She loves to plan a great college football tailgate, paddle a kayak, swing a tennis racket, and dig in the dirt. You can learn more about Nikki at newchurchnewway.org and onethousandone.org Here are some quotes from the interview: ""Where are we really feeling energized as a community? What do we love? And what does that look like for some people...who would love to do this with us, who would be comforted or challenged, or might grow in the ways that the Spirit is...growing us?"" ""Keep the rent cheap and travel... be in the community. Don't lock yourself into obligations that keep you from being involved with the community."" ""How does this message translate here? What am I seeing and learning from this person?"" ""This is a thing we're going to live, and we always have to be checking ourselves on that."" Wesleyan College in Georgia was once a whites-only school, now most of its new students are non-white and they have been raising big questions about some school traditions. Also, in the wake of the documentary, ‘Leaving Neverland’,, a popular museum in Germany is not cancelling its Michael Jackson exhibit, the museum director tells us why; we look back at the career of Ichiro Suzuki the greatest Japanese baseball player of all time; we compare some of the biggest politicians in the US to Roman emperors; and we try out a new millennial version of the popular Latin American board game,‘Loteria’. Dr. Catherine Meeks is a retired professor of socio-cultural studies at Wesleyan College. She is the editor of the newly released book, Living Into God’s Dream: Dismantling Racism in America. From the publisher: "This book is a report from the front, combining personal stories and theoretical and theological reflection with examples of the work of dismantling racism and methods for creating the much-needed “safe space” for dialogue on race to occur. Its aim is to demonstrate the ways in which a new conversation on race can be forged." Her book contains chapters from eight different contributors including herself. Some white, some people of color, some men, some women. The first chapter is written by Luther E. Smith, Jr. Dr. Smith is professor emeritus of Church and Community at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University. He writes: “Racism also persists because a large segment of the population benefits from it. This explains why and how individuals perpetuate the system of racism, even without their conscious awareness of the implications of their actions. The existence of racism relies upon it having the personal commitment of some and the inaction of many.” Celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and dismantle racism.
