The Invisible Border: The Vanishing Line of Separation Between Church and State (Robert Yelle)

TheoPodcast

Secular liberalism requires a separation of church and state, so as to guarantee both the security of the polity and religious freedom. However, where to draw the line between religion and politics remains the subject of debate, with a growing number who claim it is not possible, and may not even be desirable, to do so. This problem is hardly new. As Robert Yelle recounts, it has roots in the early modern period, when the foundations of the liberal, secular constitution were laid by such figures as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke in England. Where Hobbes argued for a state church and a civil religion, Locke argued for a stricter division of labor between church and state, reprising older formulas from Christian theology. Revisiting this history sheds light on our current predicament. This episode is a cooperation between TheoPodcast and the Catholic Academy in Berlin. Folge direkt herunterladen

Do religions have borders? Geography, porosity, and the question of appropriation (John Thatamanil)

TheoPodcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2023 50:33

This podcast argues that although it is virtually impossible to demarcate clear descriptive boundaries between religious traditions—religious traditions are too porous, fluid, and relationally constituted for such stark lines to exist—nonetheless, persons from within traditions often find that they must draw normative boundary lines. Here, John Thatamanil considers one particular case, namely recent talk about the risks of appropriation. If there really is something ethically problematic when communities within one tradition take practices from another—this podcast explores Christian appropriation of Passover practice during Holy Week—then, clearly that is because traditions recognize that some rituals properly belong to one tradition and not another. One is not free to do as they please with their practices. Thatamanil argues that despite the fact that it may prove descriptively difficult to demarcate the lines between traditions, persons from religious communities may and often do need to come together to build and maintain boundaries between each other, even if those boundaries too will need routine renegotiation and maintenance. In this podcast, Marcia Pally explores that paradox of foundational human cooperativity—as both evolutionary biology and our Christian and Jewish traditions tells us—and yet breakdowns of the very cooperativity that makes us flourish, leading to violence and divisiveness. The specific divisiveness investigated here is the rise of right-wing populism among America's white evangelicals, which emerges not from "us" thinking but from "us-them" thinking. Pally traces the path from religio-political history and current conditions to us-them thinking among white evangelicals, providing detailed information about current evangelical political and policy positions. Across every continent except Antarctica, borders are increasingly prominent, monitored, reinforced, and transgressed. In this podcast, Gary Slater shows how the world's borders can be organized into a short list of different forms, with three particular types of borders—religious borders, political borders, and ecological borders—interacting in a way that is uniquely analytically stimulating, morally compelling, and relevant to some of the most significant challenges of the twenty first century. Simon Cox is the Director of Blackpool Research School and in this episode will be discussing the best evidence on supporting students to learn remotely Blackpool Research School at St Mary’s Catholic Academy is an exciting development and part of the evidence-based journey that St Mary’s Catholic Academy has been on. We have supported schools at the forefront of making evidence-based practice the norm and Research School status is the natural next step for us. As the Research School for the Blackpool Opportunity Area, our aim is to develop an evidence-based profession, empowering teachers to use accessible tools based on research evidence to improve outcomes for all pupils. Our core purpose is to: Share and disseminate the very best of evidence-based practice to schools and teachers across Blackpool. Provide evidence-based training. Host conferences and events Support schools and work with Teaching Schools in the region Develop interventions and practices that help improve the life chances of pupils. The EEF's rapid evidence assessment examines the existing research (from 60 systematic reviews and meta-analyses) for approaches that schools could use, or are already using, to support the learning of pupils while schools are closed due to Covid-19. When implementing strategies to support pupils’ remote learning, or supporting parents to do this, key things to consider include: Teaching quality is more important than how lessons are delivered Ensuring access to technology is key, especially for disadvantaged pupils Peer interactions can provide motivation and improve learning outcomes Supporting pupils to work independently can improve learning outcomes Different approaches to remote learning suit different types of content and pupils This research was funded by The EdTech Hub – as part of the partnership between the EdTech Hub and the Education Endowment Foundation. It has been published as a global public good – to support the global response to the education impacts of COVID-19. The EdTech Hub is a Global Initiative led by the Department for International Development (DFID), The World Bank and The Gates Foundation.

In this week's interview, Phil is in conversation with Stephen Tierney @leadinglearner about his new John Catt book 'Educating with Purpose' About the book: The past decade in education focused on what works. The decade ahead must focus on what matters. In his second book, Stephen Tierney argues that it is time for the purpose of education to move to the centre of the debate. Why we educate is a question from which all else evolves. A question for all times, it will resonate deeply with those who have experienced the Great Pause caused by the global pandemic in 2020. And it is a question that we need to answer, because that purpose will determine what schools and the education system as a whole will do next. Proposing that the telos of education must be a life well-lived, Tierney argues for a re-purposing of education. He provides the theory of four philosophies of education - personal empowerment, cultural transmission, preparation for work and preparation for citizenship - alongside a powerful critique that challenges the current orthodoxy. Available here: https://www.johncattbookshop.com/educating-with-purpose-the-heart-of-what-matters About Stephen: Until recently I was CEO of the Blessed Edward Bamber Catholic Multi Academy Trust. A trust in Blackpool including Christ the King and St. Cuthbert’s Catholic Acadamies – primary schools – and St. Mary’s Catholic Academy is an 11-18 school. I chair the Headteachers’ Roundtable Group. My first and probably only book is titled Liminal Leadership and is available via John Catt Ltd or Amazon. Liminal Leadership is based on my reflections of thirty years of leading and learning; it is written for teachers and leaders who want to reflect on their current or future practice. In September 2013, I became Executive Headteacher of St. Mary’s Catholic College and Christ the King Catholic Primary School. These two Blackpool school’s first hard federated in January 2009. Previously I had been the headteacher of St. Mary’s Catholic College from September 2000 and thirteen years of headship have been a real rollercoaster of a journey. St. Mary’s is a hugely exciting place to work. We know we need to go the extra mile with our students, staff’s generosity and willingness to work with and for students whilst supporting each other adds to the wonderful ethos that permeates the school. Whilst at St. Mary’s I was very involved with the Specialist Schools & Academies Trust. Prior to headship I was Deputy Headteacher at Our Lady’s Catholic High School, Lancaster and Head of Science at De La Salle in St. Helen’s. My career started in Blackburn at Notre Dame Catholic High School in September 1988 with the school amalgamating the following year to form Our Lady & St. John’s Catholic High School. I am fascinated by leadership, learning, pedagogy and the curriculum and these elements have been intertwined throughout my professional life so far.
