Geopolitieke omwentelingen laten allerlei nieuwe allianties ontstaan. Stubb noemt dit idee ‘a marriage made in heaven’. Hun Rudolf Thorbecke was diens tijdgenoot Lord Durham. Warm bepleiter daarvan was nota bene queen Victoria. From a man named Porky Bicker stockpiling 70 tires for three years to fake a volcanic eruption in Alaska, to a pair of pranksters who stomped around Clearwater, Florida in giant lead penguin feet for a decade, to Saskatoon radio hosts who convinced an entire province (and a sitting member of Parliament) that Canada was switching to "metric time" — this is a masterclass in long-form mischief. The hosts close with a naturally occurring iceberg off the coast of Dildo, Newfoundland that defies all earthly explanation, before pivoting — somehow — to a serious reflection on Easter weekend, public accountability, and the fragility of moral character under the spotlight. Former Newfoundland premier Brian Peckford is the one man still alive who was personally in the room with then prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau when provinces and the federal government agreed, together, to a new Constitution Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He talks to Brian about the real basis for Section 33 — the notwithstanding clause — and how it came into being. He explains why the story that the federal government is telling about the clause's alleged misuse is false, why Ottawa's attempts to override it are unconstitutional, and why the Supreme Court has no authority to weigh in on its use, as the justices are now doing at the justice minister's request. Chris flies solo today, without Mitzi on this Monday, but still manages to keep it (mostly) on the sunny side! Today, on National Tartan Day, and the year’s 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence, we explore the fascinating history and linkage between our Declaration, and the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath, along with a special bonus surprise anniversary connection of the “Triumphal Entry” of Jesus Christ on Apr 6, 32 AD (10th of Nisan) spoken of in all four Gospels! If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. – John 8:36 KJV Triumphal Entry – in all four Gospels! Mat 21:1–11 Mar 11:1–10 Luk 19:28–40 Jhn 12:12–19 From the National Tartan Day Time and Date page: The Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on April 6, 1320. The American Declaration of Independence was, in fact, modeled on this particular document. Almost half of the signers of the American Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent. The US Senate Resolution on National Tartan Day was passed on March 20, 1998. From that point onward, National Tartan Day was designated as a day for all Americans, particularly those of Scottish descent, on April 6 each year. From the summary of John King Bellassai’s Two Declarations with a Common Purpose: The Link between 1320 and 1776: Tartan Day in the United States is April 6th, which is also the anniversary of the signing of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath. The significance of this date is the striking similarities in phrasing and intent between the Declaration of Arbroath and the Declaration of Independence. A key to understanding this link is the fact that the American Revolution came right on the heels of the Scottish Enlightenment. While Scottish immigrants were a small part of the general colonial population, their influence on the worldview held by the educated segment of the colonial population, most notably Thomas Jefferson was very influential. Several other key events including the fact that Jefferson's mother's family were of Scottish decent of one of the signers of the Declaration of Arbroath and his Scottish William & Mary professor William Small, whom Jefferson described as his mentor, most notably also played a role in the creation of the Declaration of Independence. To suppose them to have surrendered these in any other way than by equal rules and general consent was to suppose them idiots or madmen, whose acts were never binding. To suppose them surprised by fraud, or compelled by force, into any other compact, such fraud and such force could confer no obligation. Every man had a right to trample it under foot whenever he pleased. In short, he asserted these rights to be derived only from nature and the author of nature; that they were inherent, inalienable, and indefeasible by any laws, pacts, contracts, covenants, or stipulations, which man could devise. [x] John Adams, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law – Teaching American History In a word, let every sluice of knowledge be opened and set a-flowing. The encroachments upon liberty in the reigns of the first James and the first Charles, by turning the general attention of learned men to government, are said to have produced the greatest number of consummate statesmen which has ever been seen in any age or nation. The Brookes, Hampdens, Vanes, Seldens, Miltons, Nedhams, Harringtons, Nevilles, Sidneys, Lockes, are all said to have owed their eminence in political knowledge to the tyrannies of those reigns. The prospect now before us in America, ought in the same manner to engage the attention of every man of learning, to matters of power and of right, that we may be neither led nor driven blindfolded to irretrievable destruction. Nothing less than this seems to have been meditated for us, by somebody or other in Great Britain. There seems to be a direct and formal design on foot, to enslave all America. This, however, must be done by degrees. The first step that is intended, seems to be an entire subversion of the whole system of our fathers, by the introduction of the canon and feudal law into America. The canon and feudal systems, though greatly mutilated in England, are not yet destroyed. Like the temples and palaces in which the great contrivers of them once worshipped and inhabited, they exist in ruins; and much of the domineering spirit of them still remains. The designs and labors of a certain society, to introduce the former of them into America, have been well exposed to the public by a writer of great abilities; and the further attempts to the same purpose, that may be made by that society, or by the ministry or parliament, I leave to the conjectures of the thoughtful. But it seems very manifest from the Stamp Act itself, that a design is formed to strip us in a great measure of the means of knowledge, by loading the press, the colleges, and even an almanac and a newspaper, with restraints and duties; and to introduce the inequalities and dependencies of the feudal system, by taking from the poorer sort of people all their little subsistence, and conferring it on a set of stamp officers, distributors, and their deputies. But I must proceed no further at present. The sequel, whenever I shall find health and leisure to pursue it, will be a “disquisition of the policy of the stamp act.” In the mean time, however, let me add, — These are not the vapors of a melancholy mind, nor the effusions of envy, disappointed ambition, nor of a spirit of opposition to government, but the emanations of a heart that burns for its country's welfare. No one of any feeling, born and educated in this once happy country, can consider the numerous distresses, the gross indignities, the barbarous ignorance, the haughty usurpations, that we have reason to fear are meditating for ourselves, our children, our neighbors, in short, for all our countrymen and all their posterity, without the utmost agonies of heart and many tears. Tartan Day has expanded into an entire Tartan Week in New York City and Angus, and into multi-day events in some other locations, including Washington, DC. The name Scotland Week has also been promoted in Scotland. The events typically have parades of pipe bands, Highland dancing, and other Scottish-themed activities. In 1998, the efforts of the coalition and the Caledonian Foundation (led then by JoAnne Phipps), with the legislative sponsorship of Senator Trent Lott, resulted in United States Senate Resolution No. 155 (introduced March 6, 1998) to adopt April 6 as National Tartan Day. The resolution passed March 20, 1998, “to recognize the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States”; it also referred to the predominance of Scots among the Founding Fathers of the United States and claimed that the American Declaration of Independence was “modelled on” the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath. The now quasi-official National Tartan Day was held annually thereafter; The Washington Times reported in 2000 on the event, by which time it was already growing into a three-day affair in Washington, DC.
What does a kid from Nanton, Alta., write in his private journals after spending his days influencing some of Pierre Elliott Trudeau's most controversial policies? This week on West of Centre, host Kathleen Petty takes a peek into The Coutts Diaries: Power, Politics, and Pierre Trudeau 1973-1981, with the book's editor, Ron Graham. As the prime minister's principal secretary, Jim Coutts was said to have exercised more backroom power than anyone else in modern Canadian political history. He was everywhere that mattered during the Trudeau era 50 years ago, and then went home and wrote a lot of it down.Just as you'd expect from a diary, Coutts' offers juicy insight into exactly what he thought of both Alberta premier Peter Lougheed and Progressive Conservative Party leader Joe Clark. His entries reveal how influential he was as the reviled National Energy Program was being devised in the spring of 1980. And his private anxieties about inflation, affordability, energy prices and Western alienation read like they could have been written today. As Albertans' anger toward Ottawa reached a boiling point, Coutts understood the West's legitimate grievances. So, about 8 weeks ago I started in on a book, and I could NOT put it down. What makes “The Coutts Diaries: Power, Politics and Pierre Trudeau” so compelling, is that it is what it says it is ... a written diary of exactly what when on in the backrooms of power during most of Pierre Trudeau's 15 years as Prime Minister. It's not conjecture. It's not speculation. It's the record. Meticulously transcribed – candid detail by candid detail – by Trudeau's Principal Secretary, Jim Coutts, one of the most powerful men in Canada, in his private diary.Today on the pod, the man who breathed life into those diaries over 40 years after the last entry, editing it all into one astonishing volume. Author and journalist: Ron Graham.Ron is a multi-award winner and the man responsible for one of my favourite books on Canadian politics, “One-Eyed Kings”. Greg Marchildon speaks with Ron Graham about his book, The Coutts Diaries: Power, Politics, and Pierre Trudeau 1973-1981. Jim Coutts, principal secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau from 1975 to 1981, was one of the most powerful men in Canada during those tumultuous years. Equally admired and attacked, respected and reviled, he was, in the words of one contemporary journalist, “a political phenomenon such as Canada has never known before: Machiavelli masquerading as a cherub.” The man who “exercised more backroom power than anyone else in modern Canadian political history,” Coutts not only knew everyone and saw everything at the centre of the action, he wrote it all down. Now, for the first time, his secret diaries have been edited into a single volume that offers an astonishing, behind-the-scenes look into public events and private lives during some of the most dramatic years in Canadian history. Ron Graham is an author and journalist based in Toronto. He has written extensively over many decades on Canadian politics, history, religion, business, and culture. Nicole O'Byrne speaks with Barry Cahill about his book, A Biography of Robert Henry Winters. This biography is of Nova Scotian Robert Henry Winters (1910-1969) who was first elected to Parliament in 1945 and appointed to Cabinet by Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent in 1948. Between 1957 and 1965 Winters was one of Canada's most prominent businessmen, running companies specializing in resource extraction and development. Returning to politics in 1965, he was again elected to Parliament and soon joined the Cabinet of Prime Minister Lester Pearson as minister of trade and commerce. Notably, Winters placed second to Pierre Trudeau in the vote to choose the new leader of Canada's Liberal Party in 1968. Leaving politics once again and re-entering big business, Winters became president, and then chair of Brascan (now Brookfield Asset Management) before his unexpected death. This book will be a welcome read for anyone interested in Canadian politics, especially within the Liberal Party, Canadian business, and the interaction between the two. Barry Cahill, MLitt is an independent historian in Halifax, Nova Scotia, specializing in the legal profession, the 1917 Halifax Disaster, Canadian Black Studies, especially slavery and abolition, and Canadian political biography. He was a Commonwealth Scholar at Oxford University, and has published eight books and numerous scholarly articles, including several in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and is currently working on a biography of William Stevens Fielding, Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier's minister of finance throughout the fifteen years of the Laurier government, 1896-1911. In 2013 Nick Cater published a book called “The Lucky Culture”. In the intervening years a whole lot has changed, so he is writing a follow-up. And the essay, “Multiculturalism's Berlin Wall Moment” (Quadrant magazine October edition) is associated with it. The essay covers the assault on western culture, beginning with Pierre Trudeau's inability to understand the mistake he was making. And so it spread. REL-MAR McConnell Media Company – Transcript The ‘X' Zone Radio/TV Show – Thursday, August 28, 2025 Happy Retirement Gord - Segment 1- 00:00.00 – 06:23.385 “Here on The ‘X' Zone Radio Show, while we broadcast internationally to listeners across Canada, the United States, and around the world, right here on your Home Town Radio, Classic 1220 AM – CFAJ from our broadcast studios in St. Catharines, Ontario, it's important to take time to celebrate the people in our own community who make a lasting difference in our daily lives. Today, we celebrate Gord, the manager of Shoppers Drug Mart at 125 Carlton Street here in St. Catharines, who is retiring after beginning his career with Shoppers Drug Mart back in 1978. Now, let's take a moment to remember what Canada looked like when Gord first put on his Shopper's Drug Mart badge. In 1978, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was our Prime Minister. The Toronto Blue Jays had just played their second Major League Baseball season. Terry Fox was training quietly for what would become his heroic Marathon of Hope. Anne Murray was topping the music charts, and Canadians were gathering around their TVs to watch Hockey Night in Canada, cheering on legends like Guy Lafleur and the Montreal Canadiens, who would go on to the Stanley Cup that year. Through all those decades of Canadian history, Gord has been a constant with kindness, professionalism, and a friendly smile at Shoppers Drug Mart. His leadership and dedication, along with the entire Shoppers team, have made that store a true pillar of the community. On behalf of all the friendly and dedicated staff at Shoppers Drug Mart, the friends you have made, the customers that you have helped, everyone here at The ‘X' Zone Radio/TV Show, my wife Laura and myself, Gord, we all want to thank you. Thank you for always being there for our family, and for families in St. Catharines that have met you, and have been customers at your Shoppers Drug Mart in the Lake and Carlton Plaza. Gord, as you step into retirement after nearly half a century of service, we all wish you nothing but health, happiness, and well-earned relaxation. Gord, congratulations on an extraordinary career — and thank you for being part of our lives since 1978.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Also, are Justin Trudeau (who is the son of Pierre Trudeau and definitely not the son of Fidel Castro) and Katy Perry dating? 6:00pm- Tom Azelby closes out the show for Rich. Send us a textI sit down with Dr. Salim Mansur, professor emeritus and political scientist, to explore the untold story behind Canada's multiculturalism policy. Dr. Mansur pulls back the curtain on the political, philosophical, and constitutional roots of multiculturalism in Canada—revealing how a once well-intentioned idea may now be weakening liberal democracy and national cohesion. From the War Measures Act to the Emergencies Act, and from Pierre Trudeau's grand vision to Justin Trudeau's declaration that Canada has “no core identity,” this conversation unpacks the real consequences of prioritizing group identity over individual liberty.Support the showVisit my NEW Website! https://www.christopherbalkaran.comCheck out my Instagram/Tik Tok for daily posts: Instagram @openmindspodTiktok @openmindspodcast
Just in time for Jewish Heritage Month, the team behind the iconic Heritage Minutes—60-second short films about notable Canadians throughout history—is spotlighting Bora Laskin, the first Jewish justice appointed to the country's Supreme Court. Laskin became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court soon after. He served from 1970 until his untimely death from pneumonia in 1984 at the age of 71. The son of Jewish immigrants to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) in Northern Ontario, Laskin was a gold-medal law student in Toronto during the 1930s. With widespread antisemitism in the profession in those days, it was challenging for Laskin to find an articling position, which he ultimately did—with a Jewish firm. Laskin then went on to complete multiple degrees, including from Harvard. After nearly two decades teaching law at the newly founded U of T law school–where the library now bears his name-Laskin was appointed to the provincial court in Ontario, where he developed a reputation as a champion of the labour movement. After former prime minister Pierre Trudeau appointed Laskin to the Supreme Court, Laskin's judgments led to patriating the Canadian Constitution, enshrining the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and equalizing women's marital property rights. This new minute-long short film stars veteran Canadian Jewish actor Victor Garber, who was reportedly eager to take on the role due to his own heritage. It will be broadcast on more than 70 television stations and also online beginning May 7. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by Sam Rosenthal, one of the creative team members behind the project, who explains the drive and meaning behind the project. Shelley Laskin, his niece and a Toronto school board trustee, also joins. Related links Watch the Bora Laskin new Heritage Minute by Historica Canada on YouTube beginning May 8. Episode 161 Chapter 22, Electronic Music in Canada. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 22, Electronic Music in Canada from my book Electronic and Experimental music. Playlist: ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN CANADA Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:34 00:00 1. Hugh LeCaine, “Dripsody: An Etude For Variable Speed Recorder” (1955). One of the earliest pieces of tape music by the inventor and composer Hugh Le Caine. Also, one of the most available works from the early years when it was used to demonstrate simple techniques of tape composition. It is probably the most-played work of electronic music other than “Poeme Electronique” by Varese. Every sound in this work is based on a recording of a single drop of water falling into a bucket, which then underwent various speed adjustments and edits to create this composition. 2:12 01:38 2. Hugh LeCaine, “Ninety-Nine Generators” (1956). The title refers to the 99 tones of the touch sensitive organ. Each note had a separate generator and they could all sounds at the same time. 1:42 03:40 3. Hugh LeCaine, “This Thing Called Key” (1956). Le Caine composed on his Special Purpose Tape Recorder using individual tape playback heads for six tapes, activated by keys. 1:53 05:22 4. Anhalt, “Electronic Composition No. 2” (1959). 8:47 07:16 5. Norma Beecroft, “From Dreams of Brass” (1964). Norma Beecroft is a Canadian composer, producer, broadcaster, and arts administrator. Among the pioneering academic electronic music composers, she worked independently in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto. 15:59 16:04 6. Paul Pedersen, “For Margaret, Motherhood And Mendelssohn” (1971). Composed at McGill University where Pedersen was director of the electronic music studio. The electroacoustic work uses fragments of speeches such as prime minister Pierre Trudeau's and the electronic sounds were composed using Le Caine's Polyphonic Synthesizer. 4:21 32:02 7. Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, “Zones” (1972). Musique électroacoustique réalisée au Sonic Research Studio, Université Simon Fraser, Vancouver. An exploration of different instrumental timbres using electroacoustic music. 9:02 36:22 8. Alcides Lanza, “Eidesis IV For Wind Ensemble And Electronic Sounds” (1977). Lanza studied music in Buena Aires, moved to Canada in 1971, and became Director of the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University in 1976. 11:20 45:24 9. John Mills-Cockell, “Collision” from Gateway (1977). Produced, engineered, organ and synthesizer by independent Canadian musician John Mills Cockell. 03:32 56:54 10. Dennis Patrick, “Phantasy III (Excerpt)” (1977-78). Completed in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto, where he was Director of the studio beginning around 1976. 04:53 01:00:26 11. Hildegard Westerkamp, “Cricket Voice” (1987). This work is a “musical exploration of the cricket,” with a cricket sound recorded in Mexico. If you know crickets, you will note that this one is not Canadian. But the composer is and this work was produced at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver where Westerkamp was teaching at the time. 11:09 01:05:20 12. Ann Southam, “Fluke Sound” (1989). Southam is another female Canadian composer of note. She is from the Toronto area. This work is from a period when she was immersed in electroacoustic music. 10:22 01:16:16 13. Norma Beecroft, “Evocations: Images Of Canada (1992). In contrast to the earlier tape works of Beecroft, this is a purely digital composition. She used an Apple Macintosh, the program/sequencer Performer and a Roland D-70 synthesizer. 16:01 01:26:30 Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (02/18/2025): 3:05pm- - Democrats continue to battle against the Trump Administration's war on corruption and wasteful spending within the executive branch. According to reports, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is in the process of assessing Social Security's expenditures—which has resulted in the administration's top official stepping down. 3:30pm- Rich and Matt are heading to the White House tomorrow morning to meet with cabinet and Trump Administration officials—but President Donald Trump is in Florida, Vice President JD Vance is in Munich, and Marco Rubio is in Saudi Arabia…so, who are they going to meet with? 3:50pm- Will anyone be attending the anti-Trump “Principles First Summit” later this month in Washington D.C.? Rich suspects attendees will only be interested in the free boxed lunch. 4:00pm- Bill D'Agostino—Senior Research Analyst at Media Research Center—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to break down some of the best (and worst) clips from the Sunday shows. During an interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Face the Nation's Margaret Brennan outlandishly, and inaccurately, claimed the Nazi movement was able to gain momentum in 1930s and 1940s Germany thanks to freedom of speech. 4:30pm- From his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders expanding access to in vitro fertilization. While speaking with the press, President Trump emphasized the need to end the war between Russia-Ukraine. 5:00pm- On Tuesday, from his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders expanding access to in vitro fertilization. 5:10pm- BREAKING NEWS: According to The New York Times, Judge Tanya S. Chutkan declined to bar the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Elon Musk from accessing sensitive information from several federal agencies as part of the Trump Administration's mission to do away with wasteful spending. According to Fox News, DOGE has already saved American taxpayers $55 billion. 5:15pm- Rich and Matt are heading to the White House tomorrow morning to meet with cabinet and Trump Administration officials—but President Donald Trump is in Florida, Vice President JD Vance is in Munich, and Marco Rubio is in Saudi Arabia…so, who are they going to meet with? 5:20pm- According to reports, George Soros is looking for a progressive, far-left version of Joe Rogan. Rich hilariously imagines what his show would sound like if he sold out… 5:40pm- While speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Vice President JD Vance passionately defended free speech, explaining that “in Britain and across Europe free speech, I fear, is in retreat.” 6:00pm- Does Rich finally have indisputable proof that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is actually the son of former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro? Matt says the montage is not convincing—and the show still officially believes Justin is the son of Pierre Trudeau. 6:15pm- On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz visited Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in hopes of negotiating an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. 6:30pm- New Jersey State Senator Mike Testa—Serving NJ's 1st Legislative District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the rising cost of utility rates in NJ.
On Feb. 10, the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada published its decision on whether Library and Archives Canada was justified to block the release of the full, un-redacted 1986 report on suspected Nazi war criminals and collaborators who came to Canada after the Second World War. The government archives department claims it can't release everything, because Canada received some key information after the war from an allied foreign government—who wouldn't like it published, even all these years later—and doing so could jeopardize Canada's international relations. Plus, releasing RCMP file numbers could be dangerous. The OIC ruling suggested that B'nai Brith Canada, who has been lobbying for decades to unlock the Canada's murky wartime immigration policies, should take the case to the Federal Court of Canada. And that's just what B'nai Brith Canada has done. On Jan. 21, lawyers for the Jewish human rights group filed documents asking for a judicial review of keeping the so-called "Deschenes Report" secret. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by Sam Goldstein, former legal counsel to B'nai Brith Canada, and by historian and author Howard Margolian, a former war crimes investigator who thinks Canada let in relatively few hardcore Nazis back then—but wants the names released as well as their entire case files. Related links Read B'nai Brith's legal application to the Federal Court for a judicial review of Ottawa's refusal to release all the classified war criminals documents. Back in the day, the bird that was Liberal Party of Canada had two wings: a social justice wing and a business wing. They co-existed pretty well and kept the Liberals balanced, and in power, for the lion's share of the last hundred years. One prominent Liberal has never been under any illusion as to which wing he preferred, as you'll hear from Lloyd Axworthy, who spent more than two decades in public life, working for three different prime ministers. He joins host Steve Paikin to discuss his new book: "My Life in Politics." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 4: 6:05pm- Pennsylvania U.S. Senate Race: On Thursday, sixteen Pennsylvania counties finished their recounts—resulting in Republican Dave McCormick gaining seven votes! In response, Sen. Bob Casey officially conceded the race. 6:15pm- During a Wednesday Bucks County Commissioners' meeting, Board of Commissioners Chair Diane Ellis-Maseglia apologized for comments she made last week—when she announced her decision to count ineligible ballots in a state-wide recount, ignoring a Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision. However, during her apology she bizarrely defended her actions and bizarrely referenced Roe v. Wade. When residents in attendance reacted with jeers, she began smiling and laughing. During one notable exchange, a Bucks County resident called on Ellis-Maseglia and Robert J. Harvie Jr. to resign—and Scott Presler vowed to support candidates to defeat both board members when they are up for reelection in 2027. 6:20pm- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—who is the son of Pierre Trudeau and definitely not the son of former Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro—announced a reduction in migration. 6:30pm- On Thursday, former Congressman Matt Gaetz announced he is withdrawing as Donald Trump's nominee to serve as U.S. Attorney General. According to reports, Gaetz concluded he had no pathway towards confirmation after meeting with Senators earlier in the week and determining that at least four—Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and John Curtis—would not support him. Republicans will hold a 53 to 47 advantage in the Senate, consequently cabinet nominees cannot afford to lose the support of more than four Republicans. 6:40pm- Breaking News: Donald Trump Selects former Attorney General of Florida Pam Bondi to serve as Attorney General of the United States.

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.A helluva guest on the pod today. Because he's an historic guest. The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy is with me today. Elder statesman and academic. PhD in Politics from Princeton University. MLA in the Manitoba Legislature for 6 years, before embarking on a 21-year career in the House of Commons – more than half of those in the cabinets of Pierre Trudeau, John Turner and Jean Chretien.Minister of Foreign Affairs.Minister of Employment and Immigration.Minister of Labour. Among other portfolios. In his post-political life, President of the University of Winnipeg. And in 2015, promoted to Companion of The Order of Canada. Mr. Axworthy has a new book which I highly recommend: “Lloyd Axworthy: My Life in Politics”.No exaggeration to say he was a key figure in some of the most important stories of the last half century. It's a lot to cover in an hour. I want to talk about his view on cities, given his pre-political academic life as an acclaimed urbanist. Getting elected in Winnipeg. And then his time in Ottawa – with a focus on 3 areas: The Western Grain Transportation Act, Modernizing our Social Security System, and the Land Mines Treaty. And then a little about current politics and his post political life.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 143 Canada is in a lot of trouble, but few of us realize how far back the trouble really began. In 1968, Canada was swept with a madness affectionately called "Trudeaumania," and a new prime minister, Pierre Trudeau, was swept into office with an interest in making major transformational changes to the Canadian circumstance. Though his ambitions were greater than what the political environment in Canada in the 1970s and 1980s could tolerate, the elder Trudeau shifted policies and government institutions strongly into the radical model championed even today by some of the most concerning outfits on the planet, including the World Economic Forum (WEF), United Nations (UN), and the infamous neo-Malthusian "Club of Rome." In fact, in this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay exposes that Pierre Trudeau worked closely with the Club of Rome (https://www.utpjournals.press/doi/full/10.3138/cjh-57-2-2021-0101/) before it officially launched and set Canada's environmental policy from its outset in line with their wicked ambitions. Join him to learn how deeply infected the Canadian Liberal Party is, and has been for fifty years, with bad Communistic ideas like "degrowth" (https://newdiscourses.com/2023/08/degrowth-wests-leap-backwards/), "sustainable development" (https://newdiscourses.com/2021/10/sustainability-tyranny-21st-century/), "inclusion" (https://newdiscourses.com/2023/11/the-fraud-of-diversity-and-inclusion/), "Net Zero" (https://newdiscourses.com/2023/05/absolute-zero-and-the-western-holodomor/), and the "well-being economy" (https://newdiscourses.com/2023/11/degrowth-distributism-well-being-economy/). The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: 5:05pm- House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and Congresswoman Veronica Escobar reiterated their support for President Joe Biden's reelection campaign when asked by the press. Notably, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said “she's not here to give advice” to her colleagues and that discussions about Biden's ability to serve as president for another four-years should be made in “private.” 5:15pm- J.D. Tuccille of Reason.com writes that “the New York State government agreed to subsidize news media.” He continues: “With audiences declining for news reports, many very concerned people have called on governments to do something to prop up outlets failing to win enough public support to keep the lights on. That something comes in the form of money unlikely to win back an indifferent public but that stabilizes employment prospects for reporters. The result may be that journalists will cater to state officials rather than woo readers and viewers.” You can read the full article here: https://reason.com/2024/07/08/if-you-dont-trust-media-now-wait-until-its-government-funded/ 5:35pm- Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said that it was not uncommon for First Lady Jill Biden to attend meetings with President Joe Biden. 5:40pm- At one point during Tuesday's White House press conference, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked: “Say the Pentagon, at some point, picks up an incoming nuke—it's 11pm. Who do you call? The First Lady?” 5:55pm- A New York Times article suggests that Kamala Harris' team is already looking into potential running mates should Joe Biden step aside, making her the nominee. The Harris team's shortlist includes Governors Josh Shapiro (PA), Andy Beshear (KY), and Roy Cooper (NC).
Darrell Castle talks about the conviction of Donald Trump on 34 felony counts in New York last week in America's first Stalinist show-trial designed to be an example of what could happen if you challenge the prevailing ideology of our new post rule of law, post bill of rights, nation. Transcription / Notes CHALLENGING THE POWERS THAT BE Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday, the 7th day of June in the year of our Lord 2024. I will be talking about the conviction of Donald Trump on 34 felony counts in New York City last week. This was America's first Stalinist show trial designed to be an example of what could happen to normal people if they challenge the prevailing ideology of our new post rule of law, post bill of rights, nation. Before I get into the conviction, I will remind you once again that yesterday, the 6th of June was the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the coast of France. Hundreds of thousands of young men were sent ashore in Normandy to confront the Nazi army that enslaved Europe. Thousands of them died that day but they all knew that death was a real possibility for them and yet they went anyway. When I see the thousands of crosses in the Normandy cemeteries today my first thought is what a terrible waste. What private at Omaha Beach or Lieutenant on Utah would have become a great doctor, but now many thousands have been deprived of his care. What Canadian sergeant would have become prime minister of Canada thus sparing us the horrible Pierre Trudeau and his much worse son Justin. These are all things that we can't know because they are all dead, but there is one thing of which I am certain and that is that the nation is no longer worthy of them because they fought to preserve something that has been squandered as you will hear in this report. In my analysis of Trump's conviction, I looked around for some quote, and some example with which I could illustrate what happened and reveal the depths to which we have sunk as a people. The best quote is from the chief of Stalin's secret police Lavrenti Beria. “Show me the man, Ill show you the crime.” Professor Alan Dershowitz said that Judge Merchan took Stalin one step further because a day after the ruling and verdict he still didn't know what the crime was. The prosecution didn't bother or was unable to define the alleged crime that Trump allegedly committed. That didn't matter because the judge told the jury in his instructions that they didn't have to agree or even know what the crimes were as long as they had a belief that criminal acts were committed. This was, therefore, one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in U.S. history. So, what was the crime of which he was supposedly guilty? We still don't know exactly what the jury decided because apparently even they didn't know what the crime was. A biased judge who refused to recuse himself apparently because he was hand selected for the purpose of a conviction. A biased jury and a biased prosecutor who ran for office on the promise of finding a crime to prosecute Trump for. The prosecutor and the system tried to follow Chief Beria's statement but try as it did no crime could be found so they just made one up or invented one. This is a stain on the system of law and justice in America and it makes it difficult to ever respect such a system again. If this verdict holds then be afraid because this is no longer America but instead it has morphed into a Stalinist system of terror from above. If we are to have hope for this country, for our system of individual rights, this decision must be overturned without a lot of delay and bureaucratic wrangling. There used to be a sacrosanct system of standards and everyone knew that the integrity of the system for all of us was more important than the evidence or lack of it against any one criminal defendant. First, there had to be a victim, a step missing from Trump's trial.

In the latest Ipsos poll, 72 percent of Canadians want Trudeau to exit federal politics and leave as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Ipsos says that number is up from 60 percent in September. Even within his own party, 33 percent of Liberal supporters would like Trudeau to resign. That's consistent with other recent polls that show the Conservative Party of Canada, under its leader Pierre Poilievre, 19 percentage points ahead of the Liberals and headed for one of the larger majority governments in Canadian history. Nanos Research founder Nik Nanos described what the Liberals need to stand a chance in the next federal election is a "complete reboot." "Either with a new leader or… Justin Trudeau with a renewed vision of why he believes that he should deserve another mandate," Nanos said in a recent episode of CTV News Trend Line. Canadians have even taken to the internet to try to remove Trudeau from office through the traditional legislative process. As of Monday morning, more than 175,000 Canadians have signed a petition for a vote of non-confidence in the House of Commons against the minority Liberal government. The petition is sponsored by MP Michelle Ferreri (CPC-Peterborough-Kawartha) and reads: "The policies of this government aren't aligning with the crisis Canada is facing: housing costs, infringement of civil liberties, highest inflation in history, unbalanced immigration policies, taxation to the point of poverty, weakening of our economy by importing natural resources that Canada already has and under-utilizes; and based on the past eight years of this Prime Minister, Canadians do not have confidence in this Prime Minister, after five ethics investigations and Canada's reputation being tarnished on a global scale under his leadership. To the extent that Canada is being discluded from participating in statements regarding important geopolitical events." Sen. Percy Downe, a Liberal who was chief of staff to former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, recently wrote that it is time Trudeau left office. Trudeau laughed off the appeal. There is considerable doubt that his departure would save the Liberals' fortunes in the next federal election. Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, who was prime minister of Canada from 1968-1984 with the exception of a nine-month period in 1979 when a minority Progressive Conservative government was in power, famously took "a walk in the snow" on Feb. 28, 1984 when he decided to leave politics. He announced his resignation the following day, Feb. 29 – a date that only occurs on a leap year. https://www.foxnews.com/media/doctor-treating-freed-hamas-hostages-reveals-unprecedented-abuse-rewrite-textbooks Doctor treating freed Hamas hostages reveals unprecedented abuse: 'We have to rewrite the textbooks' A doctor treating freed Hamas hostages in Israel says survivors are suffering from an unprecedented level of "extremely severe psychological abuse" endured during captivity. "I can tell you that on behalf of all the medical and psychological teams treating those who return, the mental states we encountered have no precedent in medical literature. We feel that we have to rewrite the textbooks of post-trauma," Dr. Renana Eitan told "Sunday Night in America." Eitan revealed the Tel Aviv Medical Center is actively treating more than 15 former hostages and described their "severe physical and mental abuse." "Those held captive were subject to starvation, to beating, to sexual abuse. They were being held in inhumane sanitary conditions. Extremely severe psychological abuse was inflicted on them, including separation from family members, separation of siblings, separation of children from their mothers. They were held in solitary confinement and spent long days in total darkness until they developed severe hallucinations," Eitan claimed. "Children were forced to watch brutal videos. They were under constant threats by weapons and threats to harm them even after they were released. They refer to the forced use of psychiatric drugs and other substances." Eitan also detailed cases where individuals, though appearing physically unharmed, are dealing with "severe post-traumatic symptoms." "Some of the home comers, they look happy, they look fine, they look physically fine, and we try to hold on to those optimistic signs, but still, even those who seem fine, we know that most of them [are] suffering from severe post-traumatic symptoms, they have painful, traumatic memories. And they are entering into dissociative states, where for a moment they feel as if they are still in captivity and only later do they return to the understanding that they have been released," she said. This week marks two months since the Hamas terror attack on Israel which left 1,200 dead and 240 held hostage. According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, 73 Israelis and 24 foreign citizens have been released from Hamas to date. Eitan urged the release of the remaining hostages "as soon as possible" as they face a long road ahead of physical and mental rehabilitation. https://www.breitbart.com/2nd-amendment/2023/12/04/israeli-security-minister-we-are-approving-up-to-3000-gun-license-applications-day/ Israeli Security Minister: We Are Approving ‘Up to 3,000’ Gun License Applications A Day Israel Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir says his ministry is now approving “up to 3,000” gun license applications a day. The Times of Israel quoted Ben Gvir saying, “When the war started, we knew that we were right when we said that every place that has a weapon can save a life.” He went on to say, “My policy within the office was to permit as many people as possible to get a weapon…[and] in a short period of time, we were giving up to 3,000 approvals a day.” Ben Gvir indicated over 260,000 gun license applications have been approved since October 7, 2023. On November 15, 2023, Breitbart News pointed to a Times of Israel report which indicated over 236,000 gun license applications had been filed in Israel at that point in time. In mid-November roughly 1,700 applications were being approved daily, and the number of daily approvals has nearly doubled since then. Breitbart News noted that an armed civilian opened fire Thursday on terrorists who attacked a Jerusalem bus stop. Two off-duty soldiers opened fire as well and the terrorists were killed. https://thepostmillennial.com/arlington-home-explodes-after-suspect-sets-off-flares-as-police-serve-search-warrant?utm_campaign=64487 Arlington home explodes after suspect sets off flares as police serve search warrant On Monday, a home in the Bluemont neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia exploded as police were attempting to serve a search warrant following reports that a flare gun had been fired from within earlier in the evening. While three members of law enforcement suffered minor injuries, the fate of the suspect, who is believed to have been in the home at the time, has not been revealed. According to the Arlington County Police Department, officers were called to a duplex on the 800 block of North Burlington Street around 4:45 pm to investigate reports that someone had "discharged a flare gun 30 - 40 times from inside his residence into the surrounding neighborhood." While his actions did not result in any injuries or property damage, officers nonetheless obtained a search warrant and tried to make contact with him via telephone and loudspeaker. Their attempts proved fruitless, and the suspect remained "barricaded" inside. At around 8:25 pm, he "discharged several rounds" from what authorities believe was a firearm, resulting in the aforementioned explosion. The blast sent shockwaves through the surrounding area as residents watched debris fly into the air and the structure burn to the ground. The fire department arrived on the scene a short time later, and by 10:30 pm, the blaze was extinguished. While police have not released the name of the suspect, local outlet ARLNow has reported that public records show the resident of the now-leveled home to be a man named James Yoo. According to Newsweek, Yoo's social media posts were reportedly filled with rants about the government, the police, and his own neighbors, who he repeatedly labeled "spies," suggesting they had fake identities and were assigned to monitor him for their "handlers." His YouTube channel included videos with pictures from his LinkedIn page depicting people he claimed were his neighbors entering and leaving their homes, according to the outlet. One of Yoo's neighbors, Alex Wilson, told ARLNow that he kept to himself and often had his windows covered with aluminum foil. Yoo also allegedly chased away prospective buyers with a knife while his house was on the market.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (06/02/2023): 3:05pm- Shortly after delivering the commencement address to the U.S. Air Force Academy on Thursday, President Joe Biden took a scary fall—thankfully, after being helped up by several secret service agents he appeared to be ok. While some questioned whether this was a symptom of his advanced age, members of the mainstream media were quick to jump in and dismiss those fears. 3:10pm- June 1st kicked off Pride Month. An NBC Nightly News report from Stephanie Gosk bemoaned the fact that several companies have begun to be less vociferous in their support/participation in Pride Month—specifically, elements of the LGBTQ+ community that have been outspoken in their support for “gender affirming” procedures on children. For example, following backlash from parents, the Target retail chain removed children's swimsuits that promised to “bind” and “tuck”—appealing to transgender-identifying kids. 3:15pm- JPMorgan has downgraded Target's stock after backlash stemming from their sale of trans-merchandise for children. Caroline Downey of National Review writes, “[t]he stock was demoted from overweight, which means the broker has a positive outlook on the company's prospects due to its current share price and that the stock is considered a strong buy, to neutral, which means the broker believes the investor should hold the stock as its price may not change.” You can read more here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/jpmorgan-downgrades-target-stock-amid-backlash-over-lgbt-merchandise/#:~:text=Target%27s%20stock%20was%20downgraded%20on,the%20store%27s%20LGBT%20product%20campaign 3:35pm- During a town hall-style interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, former President Donald Trump mocked Chris Christie's presumed run for president in 2024—pointing out that the former New Jersey Governor is barely polling at 1%. 3:45pm- State Senator Ed Durr—representing New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his reelection campaign. However, as economist Dr. EJ Antoni notes, a significant number of those new jobs were courtesy of government employment—with real hourly and weekly earnings still struggling due to inflation. 4:15pm- According to a report from Patrick Thomas of The Wall Street Journal, beef prices in the U.S. are on the rise due to inflation which has “pushed up prices for fuel, feed and equipment”—complicated by “[s]evere drought in many key cattle-producing states, such as Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, parched grazing pastures, requiring spending on supplemental feed such as alfalfa and hay—which are up more than 20% on average from the prior year.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/beef-prices-high-summer-barbecue-12a08905?mod=hp_lead_pos5 4:20pm- While appearing on MSNBC, White House Economic Advisor Bharat Ramamurti said he believes that middle class families are doing well and, consequently, the economy is doing well under President Joe Biden's leadership. McCarthy, “FBI director Chris Wray reached a compromise with committee chairman James Comer (R-KY)” regarding a House Oversight Committee subpoenaed document which is alleged to show members of the Biden family were receiving payments from foreign nationals for policy influence while Joe Biden was Vice President.
