Championed over the years by the likes of Americana superstar Scott Avett and music mogul Seymour Stein, the music of Clem Snide mainstay Eef Barzelay has become an optimistic, yet matter-of-fact touchstone in a weary world, whether crafting his own musings or covering the inspirational hits of Journey. NPR dubs him "the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor," and while Eef's evocative tone is of a similar caliber to Jeff Mangum or John Darnielle, his sentimental and visual lyricism puts him in a unique category. On this week's program, Eef discusses embracing the unknown, diving back into vinyl with his adult son, and the quandary of carrying on the Clem Snide moniker. Plus, a run-in with a New Jersey state trooper while shooting the album cover for 1999's Your Favorite Music. Eef hits the road later this month; tour dates and tickets are available at clemsni.de. He's just made a fantastic new record called Oh Smokey and we talked about that, resisting writing things down, the mystique of Led Zeppelin, bands not breaking up anymore, making his record with Josh Kaufman, God, and death, and the last time we hung out. In this episode we discuss excellent Pupil Premium practice and offer practical tips and ideas for how schools and teachers can support their most disadvantaged pupils. We explore the causes of disadvantage and why the attainment gap between rich and poor has remained stubbornly large. We look at the tangible classroom consequences of disadvantage and what that means for teaching and learning. Specifically, we touch upon how we can improve the attendance of disadvantaged students as well as their language and vocabulary levels. We look at how we can ensure the funding benefits all pupils living in disadvantage – and not just those eligible for free school meals – and we explore the Pupil Premium interventions that tend to work best in most settings. We look at the common ingredients of an effective Pupil Premium strategy, including breaking down the five steps recommended by the EEF (diagnose pupil need, ensure strong evidence, implement, monitor, evaluate). We look at the role and responsibilities of the Pupil Premium coordinator in schools and the part that must be played by senior leaders and governors. And we also discuss how to prepare for an inspection of your Pupil Premium practice.

On this episode of Mind The Gap, Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner are joined by Professor Rob Coe. The three of them talk through the history of Rob's work as a teacher and then a researcher. Rob's work on the EEF Toolkit and the Sutton Trust report highlighted existing evidence about cost-effective interventions, and the publications shattered a lot of educators' previously held beliefs. Rob says that subsequent arguments with teachers led to discussions about pedagogy, and he maintains that educators need to be focussed on actual learning, not proxies for learning. At the end of the episode, Tom, Emma, and Rob talk about the latest educational craze - instructional coaching - and what the research actually says about it, as well as where research about coaching is headed. Professor Rob Coe is Director of Research and Development at Evidence-Based Education and a Senior Associate at the Education Endowment Foundation. He was previously Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring at Durham University, where he worked for 20 years doing research, evaluation, teaching and policy engagement. Rob was a co-author of the EEF's Teaching and Learning Toolkit, the Sutton Trust report ‘What makes great teaching?' and the ‘Developing Great Teaching' report for the Teacher Development Trust. Dr. Eef van der Worp stops by May Eye Interrupt to talk with Craig Norman and Dr. Jason Jedlicka about how so much has changed since he authored his guide on fitting scleral lenses over a decade ago. The biggest change, he says, is in the improvement of solutions, partly thanks to good topographers and imaging of the ocular surface. Though Dr. van der Worp hopes specialty soft lenses will take off, he acknowledges more research is needed to understand how they behave on the eyes, and how the optics will change as they bend and flex on the eyes. As for what's next? He's excited to see more exploration on measuring individual aberrations to create an optimal lens as well as advancements in daily disposable customized lenses created through customized molds. Dr. Carjie Scott is known for increasing the number of Black and minority students at colleges. She currently serves as the inaugural digital enrollment director at Tennessee State University, where she streamlined processes, automated admissions decisions, and implemented the latest trends in technology to recruit top students. Since the start of her TSU tenure, she has continually exceeded recruitment expectations. Most recently, she led the team to receive its highest enrollment of first-time freshmen in TSU history. Dr. Carjie Scott published “You are Accepted: How to Get Accepted into College and Life.” It details her commitment to equalizing and maximizing educational opportunities for all students, particularly Black and first-generation students. The book birthed her desire to create an organization enabling her to use all her experience working at trade schools, top-ranked, highly selective universities, and HBCUs. This organization empowers students to be seated in the driver's seat on their journey into college! Therefore, she founded The Education Equalizer. She does speaking engagements, higher education workshops, and consulting services through this brand. She also founded The Education Equalizer Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit that accepts 20 rising junior and senior mentees annually for assistance with college preparedness. EEF also hosts virtual workshops for middle through high schoolers to prepare them for ACT testing, job readiness, and how to afford college. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Santa Fe College within the Student Leadership and Development department and a Radio Show Host on Power Station 92, which broadcasts live on Saturdays in Greater North Central Florida. She is a member of Greater Bethel AME Church, Jack and Jill of America, and the NAACP.
