386 - How Poor Communication Destroys Trust (Part 1) with Dr. Fern Kazlow

Podiatry Legends Podcast

Dr Fern Kazlow returns to the podcast, and we dive into the critical role communication plays in building trust with our patients. This is Part One of our conversation, where we focus on how poor communication can damage connections with patients, staff, colleagues, and also family and friends. We also examine the dangers of outsourcing, particularly when it comes to compromising your authenticity, and why connection-powered business is the future. PLEASE, take a look at my UPCOMING EVENTS.  Eight Key Takeaways from (Part One) Poor communication directly decreases trust and weakens patient loyalty. Human connection is more important than ever in a world leaning heavily on automation and AI. Connection-powered business requires presence, listening, and authenticity. Patients can easily tell when communication is outsourced or generic. Editing and creating content yourself helps maintain authenticity and audience respect. Loyalty comes from honest communication, not just good outcomes. Presence in patient interactions is more valuable than perfection. Malpractice claims often stem from poor communication rather than poor outcomes. John is joined by Bethany W. Kristovich, Partner and Co-Chair of the Professional Liability Defense Group at Munger, Tolles & Olson, LLP.  They discuss some of the unique aspects of legal malpractice cases, including how often they arise from collection cases, how a plaintiff must prove not only malpractice but that without the malpractice, the case would have had a different result, the importance of expert testimony in malpractice cases, and the difficulty of mastering damages theories from both the underlying case and the malpractice action.  Bethany explains some of the worst things that can happen in a malpractice case, including the lawyer criticizing the former client so much it provokes a backlash by the jury, internal emails in which lawyers on the same team criticize each other's work, and lawyers who appear arrogant because they don't know their own rates.  Finally, Bethany explains several ways lawyers can protect themselves from malpractice claims, including making sure the client is worthy of the firm before taking their case, getting a retainer and staying current on billing and collections, creating short agendas for telephone conversations to document the topics being discussed, and including the client in all decisions about the case.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. Send us a textWide release date: August 25, 2025Episode Summary: Dr. Uffe Ravnskov talks about his decades-long career challenging the idea that high cholesterol causes heart disease, discussing LDL's protective role in the immune system by binding to bacteria, the harms and biases in statin research influenced by pharmaceutical companies, evidence that high cholesterol benefits the elderly and reduces infection/cancer risks, and how mental stress or infections elevate cholesterol as a response rather than a cause.About the guest: Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD is a physician and independent researcher who earned his MD from the University of Copenhagen in 1961 and a PhD in nephrology. He has worked in various clinics in Sweden since the 1960s, focusing his research on challenging the cholesterol hypothesis in heart disease. Now 91, he has published over 200 papers, authored books like "The Cholesterol Myths.”Discussion Points:LDL cholesterol helps the immune system by sticking to bacteria, clumping them for removal; low LDL increases infection risk.Animal studies show injecting LDL protects against lethal infections, while historical data links severe infections to worse atherosclerosis.Elderly people with high cholesterol live longer; low cholesterol raises mortality risk more than high levels.Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) doesn't cause early death via cholesterol alone—co-inherited coagulation factors are the issue, and FH patients often have lower infection rates.Statins lower LDL but increase infection risk, cause muscle weakness/brain issues (often blamed on aging), and show no clear benefit in unbiased meta-analyses.Research biases include cherry-picking studies, exaggerating benefits via relative (not absolute) risk, and pharma funding suppressing critical views.Mental stress can raise cholesterol by 10-50% in 30 minutes, often misread as a heart disease cause rather than an effect.Saturated fat and high cholesterol aren't proven harmful; Ancel Keys' claims ignored contradictory evidence.Stopping statins often reverses side effects quickly, improving quality of life.Related episode:M&M 244: Seed Oils & Heart Disease: Oxidized LDL, Cholesterol, Fat & Cardiology | Tucker GoodrichReference Paper:LDL-C does not cause cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review of the current literature*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Seed Oil Scout: Find restaurants with seed oil-free options, scan food products to see what they're hiding, with this easy-to-use mobile app. KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + electrolytes formulated for kidney health. I've been keeping a secret from you. When I revealed the Six-Malpractice patterns killing your deals in episode #468, I only told you half the story. The diagnosis without the cure, and that was intentional. Because what I am about to share with you is dangerous. Not financially, dangerous, but psychologically dangerous. Only because today is going to force you to confront some uncomfortable truths about why you keep sabotaging your own success. And today I plan to show you what I discovered while researching my private clients habits. The cure for Creative Real Estate Malpractice isn't what anyone expects. It's not learning new techniques or finding better sellers or improving your offers. It's about rewiring your thinking and point of view when talking to Sellers. Your deal killing patterns aren't accidents. They're not mistakes. They're your subconscious mind way of protecting you from the deeper issues you might have. Something you probably don't even realize you're afraid of. But once you reveal the psychology behind the malpractice, you can rewire the habits that create it. Then install new patterns that serve you instead of sabotaging you. Let's get started…

BAD NEWS: You're committing malpractice on motivated sellers. And don't even know it! After some recent coaching with private clients, I've identified the exact "malpractice" that's choking your deals before they even start. You think you're being professional. You think you're following the "system." But you're actually making the same critical errors that doctors get sued for, and it's killing your credibility with sellers faster than you can say "subject-to." Your offers get rejected. Sellers go cold after initial interest. You can't close deals even when you know the numbers work. You're spinning your wheels while other investors are crushing it. And just like medicine, created real estate malpractice has consequences. Sellers lose trust. Your reputation suffers. Your income flattens. And the cure isn't more technique or better scripts. The cure is understanding why you keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Listen today and "crack open," in your mind, the exact psychological framework that explains why the top 1% to 3% take all the best deals down.

Welcome to another insightful episode of the Legal Nurse Podcast, hosted by Pat Iyer. In this episode, Pat sits down with Dr. Charles Grodzin—a board-certified pulmonologist and critical care physician, seasoned expert witness, and co-editor of an upcoming handbook on pulmonary embolism. Together, they delve into the world of evidence-based practice in medicine, demystifying what the term truly means and how providers can effectively integrate the latest knowledge into patient care. Dr. Grodzin shares his passion for improving the understanding and management of pulmonary embolism, shedding light on why this often-misunderstood condition needs more attention in both clinical settings and the courtroom. The conversation covers the challenges of applying evidence-based standards to rare conditions, the importance of staying up-to-date in the age of rapid information access, and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in diagnosis and care. This episode offers valuable perspectives on the intersection of medicine, law, and ethics. You'll also get an inside look at the role of expert witnesses, the nuances of defining standard of care, and the necessity of objectivity and integrity in legal medical reviews. Pat, Kenna, and Grace also discuss potential nursing liability, particularly around failure to speak up or document concerns during procedures, calculation errors with weight-based medications, and issues with informed consent—especially if a surgeon adds a procedure without patient agreement. Additional topics include the complexities of healing (such as keloid scarring), how patient expectations sometimes don't align with outcomes, and the unique risks of pediatric plastic surgery. They also touch on rare but devastating occurrences like operating room fires, sharing a poignant case involving a young child to underscore the importance of safety protocols and clear communication. The episode wraps up with practical advice for legal professionals interested in consulting on plastic surgery cases, along with contact information for Kenna and Grace's consulting business. What you'll learn in this episode on How Evidence-Based Practice Impacts Patient Care and Malpractice Cases : There's plenty to learn in this honest, practical discussion about the current and future state of evidence-based medicine. What is evidence-based practice in medicine, and how do healthcare providers incorporate it into their daily work? How does evidence-based practice apply to rare medical conditions that a provider may have never encountered before? What are the challenges and considerations when comparing standards of care between large tertiary hospitals and smaller community hospitals? How are artificial intelligence (AI) tools being used in the diagnosis and management of conditions like pulmonary embolism, and what is required for their adoption in clinical practice? How should expert witnesses remain objective when reviewing cases for attorneys, and what is their role in providing medical expertise during litigation? Malpractice is the improper treatment of a case, client, or situation by a professional that results in someone's harm. It occurs when someone in a given profession does something that causes injury, injustice, or damage. And unfortunately, malpractice doesn't just happen in the medical or legal fields. In Matthew 5:21-48, Jesus addresses a different kind of malpractice —biblical malpractice—the misuse, misinterpretation, and misapplication of Scripture in ways that hurt rather than heal. Jesus' six-part message on murder, adultery, divorce, oaths, retaliation, and love reveals the dangerous consequences of interpreting God's Word through the lens of tradition, bias, and personal agenda. In this message, we're going to dive into Jesus' teaching so we can learn how to protect the church from the danger of biblical malpractice.
