Hear about four book recommendations on art, nature, magical creatures, and the joy of pet adoption, from Carol Roberts, head of youth services at Troy Public Library. "What's the Point of Art?" (Kay, Fischer, & Atkinson, 2024) explores the history of art from cave paintings through modern day, looking at specific movements & artists, as well as the purposes and contexts for art. The picture book "Night Walk" (Jason Cockcroft, 2024), showing a grandfather and child walking through nature on paths the deceased grandmother loved, could help with conversations of memories as well as nature. "The Bedtime Book of Magical Creatures" (Krensky, 2024) showcases creatures from countries and mythologies around the world. "Jump for Joy" (Ruelle, 2024) is a tandem story of loneliness changed by the pairing of a girl and her adopted dog. While aimed mostly at younger readers, people of all ages can enjoy these picks. For more details, including the illustrators of the fine artwork in each book, see www.thetroylibrary.org. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

There aren't many multilingual, multinational television shows that have been running for nearly seven decades. But what makes the Eurovision Song Contest so special to me is not the music, or the dancing, or the costumes that range from spangletastic to tear-off: no, it's the people butting heads about language. Historian Dean Vuletic, author of Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest, recounts the many changes in Eurovision's language rules, and its language hopes and dreams. This is the first of a two-part Eurovisionallusionist. In the next instalment: dictators. Protests. Boom Bang-A-Bang Ding-a-Dong Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley. I couldn't think of a more uplifting story and episode to share with you before this Thanksgiving Holiday (and at an economically challenging time for many when it's easy to feel down) than this conversation with Sabrina Ruelle. I met Sabrina on a LinkedIn text message thread where she struck me with her thoughtful, well-articulated and insightful answers to my simple question: "What is the biggest challenge facing you in your career now?". She sounded way wiser than her years and I knew I wanted to talk to her. It turns out Sabrina's story is a unique one. She was placed in foster care at 12 years old when her mom had to battle addiction and she spent the next few years defying the expectation that she would underperform in the system. After high school, the only college that would accept her was a community college but she didn't let that deter her either. She ended up getting her master's degree at Boston University, and today, at 32 years old, is a Senior Director of Program Marketing and Management with a healthcare device startup. She's one of the best storytellers I've met and shows you what's possible when you choose career paths that follow your passion - healthcare for Sabrina, because of her mom's struggles. Tune in to hear Sabrina's inspirational story and to see what's possible when you are determined to put down roots, bloom and count your blessings in any environment.

Gudrun talks with Polyxeni Spilioti at Aarhus university about spectral geometry. Before working in Aarhus Polyxeni was a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Anton Deitmar at the University of Tübingen. She received her PhD from the University of Bonn, under the supervision of Werner Mueller after earning her Master's at the National and Technical University of Athens (Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Physics). As postdoc she was also guest at the MPI for Mathematics in Bonn, the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris and the Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics. In her research she works on questions like: How can one obtain information about the geometry of a manifold, such as the volume, the curvature, or the length of the closed geodesics, provided that we can study the spectrum of certain differential operators? Harmonic analysis on locally symmetric spaces provides a powerful machinery in studying various invariants, such as the analytic torsion, as well as the dynamical zeta functions of Ruelle and Selberg. Legislation that would essentially block certain types of mining on a large swath of federal land in the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was passionately debated during a May 24 hearing of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources. The bill would prohibit sulfide-based mineral development in an area of Superior National Forest near the BWCA. During the hearing, a Congressman from Wisconsin said the United States must either depend on slave labor or open the stalled Twin Metals sulfide-mining project on the edge of the Boundary Waters if the nation aims to have renewable energy sources as it shifts toward a green future. Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, who represents Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District, asked Julia Ruelle from the Kids for the Boundary Waters organization if she thought slave labor should be preferred over the Twin Metals project. The audio in this short track includes segments from the May 24 hearing, as well as interviews with both Rep. Tiffany and Ruelle.

Restoring the faith of Catholics!
