Let's get started:Indian benchmark indices remained upbeat on Monday, with both Nifty and Sensex closing the session in the green. BSE's 30-company Sensex surged 0.15 percent while NSE's Nifty-50 saw a rise of 0.22 percent.Mini-cars have long been the gateway to four-wheeled transport for many in India, but they're facing a bit of a rough patch. Maruti Suzuki, the big player in India's car market, is hitting the pause button on sprucing up this segment. Why? Well, it boils down to costs and affordability. Right now, Maruti dominates the hatchback market, holding about 70% of it, but they're choosing to hold off on upgrades until these cars become more wallet-friendly for the average buyer. Their mainstays—the Alto, Celerio, and S-Presso—won't see significant changes for a while. Maruti's betting that once incomes go up, these entry-level cars will become popular again among first-time buyers. But here's the kicker: the overall market for entry-level cars has really dipped, from more than 470 thousand units back in 2011 to just over 160 thousand in 2024. Customers are more inclined towards entry-level SUVs instead. Mint's autos correspondent Alisha Sachdev writes on the shrinking market for entry-level hatchbacks.Nasdaq-listed IT firm Cognizant, which has more than 250 thousand employees in India, is getting tough with employees who are resisting returning to the office. They've warned that continued absence could lead to termination. This move, detailed in a letter from April 15, makes Cognizant one of the first major IT companies to use firing to get people back to their office cubicles. Until recently, Cognizant was flexible about office attendance, letting individual teams decide based on their project needs. But earlier this year, they changed gears and started asking their employees in India to be in the office three days a week. They even began tracking office attendance closely. Mint's IT correspondent Jas Bardia reports on the emerging trend of IT companies using termination as a tool to get people back to office. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys have also been tightening policies around office attendance, linking them to pay hikes and bonuses, indicating a significant shift from the more flexible remote work policies during the pandemic.The banking sector is basking in the glow of an extraordinary earnings season for the March quarter. State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, just posted a record-breaking profit of more than 20,000 crore rupees for the quarter, outshining even Reliance Industries, India's most valuable company. Punjab National Bank is another state-run lender that's making waves, with its net profit skyrocketing almost three-fold. Private players including HDFC and Axis Bank, too have reported strong numbers. However, not everything is smooth sailing. The robust post-pandemic economic recovery has led to a surge in credit growth, especially in the retail segment, which has outpaced deposit growth. This situation has pushed the loan-to-deposit ratio to a decadal high of 80%, signalling potential liquidity and credit risks. Banks are now caught in a tough spot. They need to either reduce loans, which could stifle growth, or increase deposits, which might hurt margins because higher interest rates would have to be offered to attract depositors. Mint's Abhishek Mukherjee examines what's behind the stellar fourth-quarter performance of banks and whether the results show the complete picture. Tata Motors experienced a standout fiscal 2024, thanks mainly to the performance of its British subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover. JLR's margin climbed impressively to 8.5% from just 2.4% the previous year, a boost attributed to better scale, reduced costs for input materials, and strong sales of the Range Rover and Defender models. Additionally, JLR generated a whopping ₹24,000 crore in free cash flow for FY24, significantly cutting down TaMo's net automotive debt from ₹43,700 crore at the end of the previous year to ₹16,000 crore by March's end.Looking ahead, Tata Motors is potentially on track to erase its net debt by FY25, thanks to the continued cash flow from JLR. Mint's Manish Joshi brings a snapshot of Tata Motors' fourth-quarter performance and how the growth of its British subsidiary is on its way to a slower lane. The buzz is real! By the end of September, summer starts giving way to the fall. The pleasant weather also ushers in harvesting and festival season in the entire country-- which starts with Onam and Navratri and goes on till Diwali. People go on shopping spree, flooding markets and shopping malls. Online purchases also hit the peak during this period. Mobile phones, TVs, fridges, washing machines sell like hot cakes due to the irresistible offers. But what about cars? Hit hard by pandemic, passenger-vehicle makers were waiting for the festival season for more than one reason. First, they expect to see record volumes. Second, they expect a swift recovery in their profitability to pre-Covid levels. CRISIL Research says that cumulative retail sales in October and November are expected to touch a record 650,000-700,000 units. And dispatches to dealers are expected to cross a million units in the September quarter. But there is a spoiler.  The waiting game The good news may not extend to you, the buyer. Across brands, the average waiting period for popular models is about three to four months. This suggests that there may be more buyers chasing new cars than the carmakers can supply. Shortage of chips and pent-up demand in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic are the reasons. Expect limited discounts & offers So, buyers should expect limited discounts and offers. And, offers will mostly be limited to vehicles seeing low demand, such as some entry-level hatchback models. In the beginning of September, the industry was estimated to have about 700,000 pending bookings, with Maruti Suzuki alone accounting for 377,500 units.  The likely trend So what will be the trend this festival season? There will be strong demand for top-end trims on the one hand, and negligible discounts on select models on the other. The sales trend till August indicates that while the growth momentum has continued for SUVs, it has hit a plateau for sedans. So, those looking for discounts may want to try their luck with the latter. So, how much can you expect to save even where discounts are on offer?  An analysis of available reports on recent offers shows that you may bag discounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000, that too depending on the model and trim. Finance schemes and exchange bonus benefits will also be there. But, that is a far cry from past festival season sops. Discounts on passenger vehicles had reportedly gone up to 1 lakh rupees for some models in 2019. Even where discounts are on offer, they are small for the most part.  Mahindra, which only recently started deliveries of the Scorpio N, has bookings for 100,000 units. And, depending on the variant, the waiting period is 70 to 90 weeks. There is not much incentive then to offer good discounts. In the beginning of September, Autocar India reported that Honda was offering discounts and benefits on its fourth and fifth-generation City, Amaze, Jazz and WR-V models. The fifth-generation Honda City, a midsize sedan, got the most discounts. On offer were either a cash discount of Rs 5,000 or free accessories worth Rs 5,496. A discount of Rs 5,000 and a bonus of Rs 7,000 was also on offer on car exchange. However, no discounts were on offer on the City Hybrid. Right before the start of the festival season, Maruti Suzuki offered discounts on the Ciaz, XL6 and Ignis. It is offering benefits of up to Rs 48,000 for all variants of the Ciaz sedan. The Ciaz saw a 29 per cent year-on-year drop in sales in August 2022. It was also Maurti's worst-selling model that month, accounting for just 1.13 per cent of total units sold across models.  For Ignis, a small hatchback, the automaker is giving a consumer offer of up to Rs 10,000 and an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,000. Maruti Suzuki has also been offering heavy discounts on Celerio, S-Presso and Dzire in September. Tata Motors has also come out with offers for Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali. Un unico obiettivo: dimostrare che sostenibilità, lusso e performance possono convivere in una vettura. Ovviamente la vettura non era un’auto qualsiasi, ma una Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. Noi c’eravamo e partendo con le batterie agli ioni di litio da 9,4 kWh completamente ricaricate in appena 2 ore dalla presa di corrente industriale siamo riusciti a limitare i consumi reali della nostra prova a 3,8 litri per 100 km, percorrendo quasi 60 km ad emissioni zero. Come dire oltre trenta chilometri con un litro di benzina al volante di una berlina Porsche lunga cinque metri e con oltre 416 CV. Missione compiuta, a dimostrazione dello stato dell’arte raggiunto dalla motorizzazione ibrida plug-in che del resto si sta affermando sempre più anche nelle competizioni come dimostra la stessa Porsche con la sua 918 che corre nel Mondiale Endurance. Per la cronaca, siamo arrivati secondi a 0,1 litri per 100 km di differenza! Golf parade Nel 1974 inventò un nuovo segmento di mercato e da 40 anni lo domina. È questa l’inconfutabile verità che gli uomini di Volkswagen sottolineano in occasione delI’importante traguardo della best seller teutonica. Nel 1976 debutta la GTI prima vera sportiva compatta. Nel 1978 la GTD prima diesel sportiva compatta. Dal 1996 adotta – con otto anni di anticipo rispetto alle normative – l’ABS è di serie, seguito poi nel 1999 dall’ESP che diventerà obbligatorio per legge solo a partire dal 2011.
