The Dussehra festivities are here, and so are Dussehra processions. In Mysore, like every year, this time too, the elephant Abhimanyu will carry the 750-kg Golden Howdah and lead the procession. Abhimanyu is 59 years old and this could be one of the last times he performs his annual duty. While people love temple elephants and pachyderms like Abhimanyu are an integral part of religious rituals, it is, nonetheless, a fact that elephants are wild animals, and their transition to life in captivity is rarely without distress. In this episode of InFocus, we look at the life trajectory of Abhimanyu, and the larger issues around human-elephant conflict in the context of captive elephants.
Dussehra marked the end of the 10-day Navaratri period last week. After a gap of two years, markets were full of keen shoppers. And both offline and online purchases surpassed guesses. The sales of vehicles jumped by an impressive 57%. And it's not the end. Diwali is drawing close. And then the new year. So what do the sales data and other indicators from the current season suggest about consumption, which has suffered due to persistently high inflation? Railways is also gearing up to meet the festival rush, and to make up for some pandemic losses in passenger revenue. But Railways freight operations were not affected by the pandemic upheaval. The revenue of Railways from freight transport jumped by 24% last fiscal. And the government has lined up a host of measures to transform the freight service. Defying headwinds, banks too are expected to report a healthy rise in net profit and net interest income for the September quarter as successive rate hikes by the Reserve Bank of India failed to curb credit growth. Besides, easing government bond yields in the quarter gone by will support treasury income. We share with you how the Q2 report cards of banks look like, and the warning signs that investors should be wary of. From the financial markets, let us move on to the judiciary. Differences have emerged within the Supreme Court Collegium over appointment of judges to the apex court. But what exactly is collegium and how does it work? Barring a few names such as Apollo Hospitals and Fortis Healthcare, most hospital stocks have firmly outperformed the market in the last six months. Aster DM Healthcare, Shalby, Max Healthcare, and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences have gained up to 23% during this period versus a 3% slide each in the BSE Sensex and BSE healthcare indices. Analysts, too, remain firmly upbeat on the sector, which is undergoing a healthy expansion cycle, and is seeing a recovery in its non-Covid business. Param Desai, Research Analyst, Prabhudas Lilladher says, the sector is reaping benefits of previous capex. Most companies are yet to reach optimum utilisation. Average revenue per operating bed remains healthy. Pricing, international patient inflow to drive near-term growth. Analysts see strong growth visibility over the next 4-5 years as hospitals would add twice the current capacities by this time. Apollo Hospitals, for instance, recently, marked its entry into Haryana as it acquired a hospital asset in Gurugram for Rs 450 crore. Fortis Healthcare, too, has lined up a capex of Rs 400 crore for the current fiscal, while Max Healthcare is said to be in the race to acquire Care Hospitals. The companies are generating strong cash flows, and the debt leverage for major players has significantly improved vs pre-Covid year of FY20. According to Jefferies, in FY22, Max and Fortis' net debt to EBITDA came below 1x, while it was 1.2x for Apollo. This has slipped from over 3.5x levels over the last five years Besides, the sector's shift towards taking land-on-lease, instead of owning it, has allowed companies to use fewer funds to set up hospitals. Aditya Khemka - Fund Manager, InCred PMS says, hospitals have shifted to asset-light model. This allows higher return on equity, faster expansion. Expect FY23 sales to rise in the range of low-high teens. Turnaround in high margin non-Covid business to lift profits. Khemka prefers companies that undertake mostly brownfield expansion as these players break-even quicker than the larger chains. He remains bullish on Aster DM Healthcare, and Healthcare Global Enterprises. Equity markets will be closed today on account of the Dussehra holiday.
The festive season is also, and more, about fun and food, revelry and community.

Indian equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 are likely to open sharply higher on Tuesday tracking gains across global markets, following an overnight surge on Wall Street amid easing US Treasury yields. Singapore Exchange (SGX) Nifty futures — an early indicator of the Nifty index — jumped as much as 252 points or 1.5 percent to 17,120.5, suggesting a strong start ahead on Dalal Street. The Indian market will remain shut on Wednesday for Dussehra.
Vijayadashami also known as Dussehra, Dasara or Dashain, is a major Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navaratri every year in India and Nepal. It is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, the seventh month of the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October.
“O Rakshasa, It might be possible for a person to live for a long time after forcibly taking away Shachi Devi, a woman of unmatched beauty and wife of the wielder of the thunderbolt [Indra]. But a person who abuses me shall not be released from death even if they were to drink amrita [nectar which grants immortality].” (Sita Devi speaking to Ravana, Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kand, 48.24)
By the end of September, summer starts giving way to the fall. The pleasant weather also ushers in harvesting and festival season in the entire country-- which starts with Onam and Navratri and goes on till Diwali. People go on shopping spree, flooding markets and shopping malls. Online purchases also hit the peak during this period. Mobile phones, TVs, fridges, washing machines sell like hot cakes due to the irresistible offers. But what about cars? Hit hard by pandemic, passenger-vehicle makers were waiting for the festival season for more than one reason. First, they expect to see record volumes. Second, they expect a swift recovery in their profitability to pre-Covid levels. CRISIL Research says that cumulative retail sales in October and November are expected to touch a record 650,000-700,000 units. And dispatches to dealers are expected to cross a million units in the September quarter. But there is a spoiler. The waiting game The good news may not extend to you, the buyer. Across brands, the average waiting period for popular models is about three to four months. This suggests that there may be more buyers chasing new cars than the carmakers can supply. Shortage of chips and pent-up demand in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic are the reasons. Expect limited discounts & offers So, buyers should expect limited discounts and offers. And, offers will mostly be limited to vehicles seeing low demand, such as some entry-level hatchback models. In the beginning of September, the industry was estimated to have about 700,000 pending bookings, with Maruti Suzuki alone accounting for 377,500 units. The likely trend So what will be the trend this festival season? There will be strong demand for top-end trims on the one hand, and negligible discounts on select models on the other. The sales trend till August indicates that while the growth momentum has continued for SUVs, it has hit a plateau for sedans. So, those looking for discounts may want to try their luck with the latter. So, how much can you expect to save even where discounts are on offer? An analysis of available reports on recent offers shows that you may bag discounts ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 45,000, that too depending on the model and trim. Finance schemes and exchange bonus benefits will also be there. But, that is a far cry from past festival season sops. Discounts on passenger vehicles had reportedly gone up to 1 lakh rupees for some models in 2019. Even where discounts are on offer, they are small for the most part. Mahindra, which only recently started deliveries of the Scorpio N, has bookings for 100,000 units. And, depending on the variant, the waiting period is 70 to 90 weeks. There is not much incentive then to offer good discounts. In the beginning of September, Autocar India reported that Honda was offering discounts and benefits on its fourth and fifth-generation City, Amaze, Jazz and WR-V models. The fifth-generation Honda City, a midsize sedan, got the most discounts. On offer were either a cash discount of Rs 5,000 or free accessories worth Rs 5,496. A discount of Rs 5,000 and a bonus of Rs 7,000 was also on offer on car exchange. However, no discounts were on offer on the City Hybrid. Right before the start of the festival season, Maruti Suzuki offered discounts on the Ciaz, XL6 and Ignis. It is offering benefits of up to Rs 48,000 for all variants of the Ciaz sedan. The Ciaz saw a 29 per cent year-on-year drop in sales in August 2022. It was also Maurti's worst-selling model that month, accounting for just 1.13 per cent of total units sold across models. For Ignis, a small hatchback, the automaker is giving a consumer offer of up to Rs 10,000 and an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,000. Maruti Suzuki has also been offering heavy discounts on Celerio, S-Presso and Dzire in September. Tata Motors has also come out with offers for Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali. But, it is offering discounts on five models, which are

Adharm Par Dharm Ki Vijay Dussehra : Pujya Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu Satsang
Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a Hindu festival that commemorates the triumph of good over evil. Dusshera is celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvin, the seventh month of the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar, which occurs between September and October in the Gregorian calendar. In different parts of the India, Vijayadashami or Dusshera is commemorated and celebrated for different reasons. Vijayadashami is the end of Durga Puja in India's southern, eastern, northeastern, and some northern states. The event is known as Dussehra in the northern, central, and western states, and it commemorates lord Rama's victory over Ravan at the end of Ramlila. In the famous Hindu epic Ramayana, Ravana kidnaps Rama's wife Sita in the Ramayana to take revenge on Rama and Lakshmana for cutting off Surpanakha's nose. In the end, Rama triumphs over Ravana and saves Sita. The triumph is then commemorated by the burning of the effigies of Ravana. The tenth day, Dussehra, is the end of Navratri's nine-day celebrations. According to another legend, Goddess Durga battled and killed Mahishasura on this day. The day is known as Vijayadashmi. The nine days leading up to Vijayadashami are dedicated to a different powerful manifestation of Goddess Durga.
