Gaganyatri Launch Delayed | ACs May Soon Stop at 20°C | India-US Trade Talks Strain

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. Gaganyatri Launch Delayed Again India's much-anticipated moment in space will take a bit longer. The Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission—meant to carry the first Indian Gaganyatri to the ISS—has been postponed due to a liquid oxygen (LOx) leak found during Falcon 9's booster test. SpaceX confirmed the issue via X, while ISRO announced that the launch will only proceed after thorough repairs and validation tests. This is the second delay, following an earlier weather-related rescheduling. No new launch date has been set. India-US Trade Talks Hit a Roadblock Trade talks between India and the US are entering a tense final phase. The US is demanding greater access to Indian markets in dairy, agriculture, shrimp, and digital services. But India is pushing back, citing food security and rural livelihoods. With a July 8 deadline looming, paused tariffs could soon return. Dairy remains a key sticking point, with India insisting on vegetarian feed standards for US imports. Despite the friction, Indian officials say a balanced deal is still within reach. ₹5,400 Cr Boost for Battery Storage India is ramping up its clean energy game with a fresh ₹5,400 crore push for battery energy storage systems (BESS). Announced by Power Minister Manohar Lal, the scheme aims to build 30 GWh of capacity, attracting ₹33,000 crore in investments. It builds on an earlier ₹3,700 crore initiative supporting 13.2 GWh. With peak power demand expected to hit 270 GW this summer, BESS will help stabilize the grid and support the 2070 net zero target. Undersea transmission lines to the UAE and Saudi Arabia are also in the works, with ₹90,000 crore earmarked for the project. Your AC May Soon Stop at 20°C The government plans to cap air conditioner temperatures at a minimum of 20°C as part of a national energy-saving initiative. Power Minister Manohar Lal said the new rule would apply to homes, hotels, and even cars. Air conditioners account for about 20% of peak power load. Raising the minimum temperature could save up to 3 GW during peak hours. With 100 million AC units already in use and demand rising, the move could cut ₹7.5 trillion in energy costs by 2035. RCB Sale Rumors and Parade Tragedy Just after winning their first IPL title, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) found themselves in the spotlight again—this time over rumors of a $2 billion sale. Diageo, the team's owner, denied the speculation in a filing with the BSE. But a deeper crisis unfolded on June 4, when a stampede at RCB's victory parade in Bengaluru left 11 dead and 56 injured. The tragedy has sparked criticism of event planning and crowd control. Meanwhile, India's health ministry is pushing to curb alcohol advertising in sports, putting further pressure on Diageo's branding strategies. Learn more about your ad choices. We are back with part two of Prion Diseases or Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. Kuru is a TSE/Prion disease that has affected the native people's of Papua New Guinea during the last century or so. I don't want to spoil just how it came about, but it does involve some taboo--and thankfully no longer practiced--funerary rites. The Australians who were observing and studying them just after WWI discovered the Fore people there were dying out quickly (the women and children especially) of some strange illness that led them to shake and tremble violently, become confused, and even laugh deliriously before dying. There native peoples had long believed it to come from sorcery, but the Australians and an American physician with many a flaw to discuss here were not content with such an answer. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) was identified in patients in the early 20th century and the symptoms were similar to other diseases now known to be prion diseases: dementia, hallucinations, stumbling, falling, loss of coordination, death. This seemed to be spontaneous and that was that. Then Europe's cattle began to show signs and symptoms that were alarming. They too loss their coordination, became agitated, held their heads strangely, fell over, and died. Cows who were ill were slaughtered and their meat and tissues made it into the food chain. In Cows, the illness was identified as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), though some journalists referred to it as "mad cow" disease. While the government agencies tried to keep it a secret to avoid the meat economy from going under, humans became infected via the ingestion of BSE infected meat. This illness in humans was identified as variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease and it caused chaos and panic among those who had been buying and eating beef. America would face a similar battle with similar government agency actions and there are some (scientists included) who have begun to believe that CJD is never sporadic but likely always related in some way to infected meat. Let's see why they think as much. Finally, we need to discuss what is happening to deer, especially here in North America. Chronic Wasting Disease showed up in Colorado in deer in the late 1900s (1970 onward) and it has since spread to elk, moose, reindeer and other such animals throughout the US and Canada. These animals are dying of a prion disease that likely jumped from sheep as Scrapie into deer as CWD. How could this have happened and what could it mean for the future?Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. 1. IndiGo's Gangwal Plans ₹6,831 Cr Stake Sale In a major move, IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal and his family trust are set to sell up to ₹6,831 crore worth of shares in the airline through a block deal. The sale, expected to happen Tuesday, involves up to a 3.4% stake at a floor price of ₹5,175 per share. Gangwal and his trust together own nearly 13.5% of the company. With shares up 461% over five years and near 52-week highs, investors are watching closely—this could mark a strategic exit or just profit booking. 2. NSE vs BSE: Expiry Day Showdown Begins Sebi's new circular limiting equity derivative expiries to either Tuesday or Thursday has kicked off a turf war. NSE wants to shift its Nifty expiry to Tuesday—the very day BSE had claimed earlier for its Sensex contracts. If approved, NSE could see a 5% boost in market share, while BSE may have to move to Thursday or risk losing volumes. The final decision is due by June 15, but until then, it's a race to lock in the more lucrative day. 3. Starlink Set to Launch in India at ₹850/month Elon Musk's satellite internet service, Starlink, is close to entering India after securing a Letter of Intent from the DoT. Plans may start at just ₹850 per month with unlimited data—among the cheapest globally. The goal? Ten million subscribers. But urban surcharges, spectrum charges, and licensing levies could raise prices. Even so, Starlink hopes to bridge India's digital divide, particularly in rural areas with poor connectivity. 4. Leela Hotels Launches ₹3,500 Cr IPO Luxury hotel chain Leela is making its market debut with a ₹3,500 crore IPO—the largest ever in India's hospitality sector. Backed by Brookfield, the IPO is priced attractively but comes with baggage: ₹2,567 crore in debt. Most of the proceeds will go toward deleveraging. With new properties planned and EBITDA margins at 50%, Leela hopes to ride the luxury upcycle, though rivals like Taj and Oberoi still lead in occupancy and brand recall. 5. India Pushes US to Ease Fruit Import Rules India is lobbying hard to get better market access for fruits like mangoes, pomegranates, and guavas under a proposed trade deal with the US. After 25 tonnes of mangoes were destroyed at US ports, India wants faster approvals and localized certification. Despite a 28% rise in exports to the US over two years, regulatory bottlenecks remain. Exporters say the deal could be a game-changer—but time, and cold storage, are running short Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Lodha Truce, ₹5,000 Cr Feud SettledAfter nine rounds of mediation and a mother's public plea, warring brothers Abhishek and Abhinandan Lodha have settled their ₹5,000-crore trademark dispute. As per the court-filed terms, Abhinandan can no longer use ‘Lodha' in isolation for real estate. Instead, he must use the full ‘House of Abhinandan Lodha' with clear disclaimers. Both parties waived financial claims and agreed to strict separation, including no shared employees or premises. Violations could trigger a ₹1 lakh/day penalty. Legal experts call it a rare, detailed resolution setting a precedent for intra-family brand disputes in India. 2. ITC's Record Profit Powered by Hotel DemergerITC reported a Q4 consolidated net profit of ₹19,807 crore, largely due to a one-time exceptional gain of ₹15,145 crore from the demerger of its hotel business. Adjusted net profit fell to ₹4,662 crore, down from ₹5,190 crore a year ago. Revenue rose 10% YoY to ₹20,376 crore, led by cigarettes and FMCG. EBITDA grew 3.7%, but margins slipped to 33.5%. A final dividend of ₹7.85 per share was announced, taking the full-year payout to ₹14.35. 3. Sun Pharma Profit Dips, But Margins Expand Sun Pharmaceutical Industries posted a 19% YoY decline in Q4 profit at ₹2,154 crore, even as revenue rose 8% to ₹12,959 crore. Strong domestic sales and global speciality drugs helped EBITDA grow 22% with margins expanding to 28.7%. US sales declined, but India sales grew 13.6%. The company declared a final dividend of ₹5.50 per share, taking FY25's total to ₹16. CMD Dilip Shanghvi highlighted promising global pipeline and recent acquisitions to strengthen the speciality segment. 4. Sensex Shake-Up: Trent, BEL In; Nestle, Indus Ind OutThe BSE Sensex is getting a facelift—Tata-owned Trent and defence PSU Bharat Electronics will replace Nestle India and IndusInd Bank from June 23. The reshuffle reflects shifting investor sentiment toward domestic consumption and defence stocks. Other key changes across indices: Dixon, Coforge, and Indus Towers will enter BSE 100; InterGlobe Aviation and Shriram Finance join the Sensex 50. IDFC First Bank replaces Canara Bank in the BSE Bankex. 5. De Beers Sees India's Diamond Market Doubling India's natural diamond market is set to double in five years, says De Beers Group CEO Al Cook, during his first visit to the country. India has overtaken China to become De Beers' second-largest market, after the US. De Beers is ramping up marketing spend, opening four new stores, and partnering with major players like Tanishq and GJEPC. While lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) are gaining ground, Cook emphasized their future lies in tech, not jewellery. De Beers has closed its LGD brand Lightbox amid a 90% fall in LGD prices. Send us a textTired of waiting overnight for ELISA results? Serial entrepreneur Bruno Oesch reveals how his groundbreaking 10-minute immunoassay technology is eliminating the biggest bottleneck in bioprocessing workflows. From contributing to Nobel Prize-winning prion research to founding Prionics (the first commercial BSE test) and now revolutionizing immunoassays with Elionova, Bruno transforms high-end science into practical solutions that work for everyday labs. Here are three takeaways from this podcast episode:ELISA - The Lab Workhorse That Still Matters: Since the 1970s, ELISA assays have been a cornerstone of bioprocessing and diagnostics. As Bruno Oesch puts it, they remain the "workhorses of biochemical labs." Despite requiring over four hours of binding and washing steps, ELISA remains widely used for its affordability and reliability. However, its slow, linear workflow calls for innovation.ElioDX - The Next-Gen Immunoassay: While Elionova didn't invent evanescence, they've made it accessible and practical. Instead of lengthy washes, a laser-generated evanescent field enables real-time detection, delivering results in just 10 minutes by measuring signal changes dynamically. The Future of Real-Time Bioprocessing: This breakthrough eliminates bottlenecks in biotech workflows. By integrating real-time analysis, ElioDX enhances efficiency, decision-making, and continuous bioprocessing, ensuring precise insights exactly when they're needed. As David and Bruno highlight, the future of immunoassays isn't just about innovation - it's about making these advancements practical and transformative across the industry.By bridging science and accessibility, leaders like Bruno Oesch play a crucial role in demystifying bioprocessing, sparking impactful discussions, and driving real change in the scientific community.Listen to the full discussion to explore how this real-time approach can streamline bioprocessing and transform your workflows.Connect with Bruno Oesch:LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/bruno-oeschElionova: www.elionova.comNext step:Book a free consultation to help you get started on any questions you may have about bioprocessing analytics: https://bruehlmann-consulting.com/callDevelop bioprocessing technologies better, faster, at a fraction of the cost with our 1:1 Strategy Call: The quickest and easiest way to excel biotech technology development. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 7th of April and here are today's headlines.Domestic benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty plummeted over 5 per cent this morning, following a sharp decline in US futures triggered by United States President Donald Trump's sweeping reciprocal tariffs last week. The BSE's 30-share Sensex nosedived 5.19 per cent, dropping 3,914 points to open at 71,449.94. Meanwhile, the broader Nifty slipped 5 per cent, or 1,146.05 points, opening at 21,758.4.How Asian markets opened? As trading resumed Monday, Asian stock markets crashed and the sell-off was widespread with Tokyo's Nikkei 225 dropping nearly 8%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 falling over 6%, and South Korea's Kospi shedding 4.4%. Oil prices also continued their downward slide, with the US benchmark crude dropping 4 per cent. The sharp declines followed a massive meltdown on Wall Street on Friday, as Trump's tariffs and retaliatory measures from China stoked fears of a full-blown trade war and heightened concerns over a potential global economic recession. US companies with significant exposure to China saw some of the steepest losses.Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Monday said that he will take a call on listing petitions challenging the changes made to the waqf law. The CJI conveyed this to senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who brought up the matter before a Supreme Court bench presided by him. Sibal said that a petition had been filed by Maulana Arshad Madani, president of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, a body of Muslim clerics. The CJI pointed out that a system is already in place to request listing of cases by emailing the court and said it should be followed and oral mentioning should be avoided. Sibal said he had sent the email request, following which the CJI said that he will examine it in the afternoon. As Indian stock markets plunged 5 per cent, the Congress Monday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that both United States President Donald Trump and he are experts in causing “self-inflicted wounds” to their respective economies. The bloodbath tracking Asian markets came in the wake of concerns over escalation in trade wars following the reciprocal tariff announcements by the US. In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh wrote: “It is no wonder that Mr. Modi and Mr. Trump describe themselves as good friends. Both are experts in giving their economies self-inflicted wounds.”Ahead of this year's Hajj pilgrimage, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has temporarily suspended the issuance of visas to citizens of 14 countries. The government will refrain from the issuance of Umrah, business, and family visit visas until mid-June 2025, which coincides with the conclusion of Hajj. The ban comes amid efforts to manage overcrowding associated with the Hajj pilgrimage and to prevent individuals from attempting to perform Hajj without proper registration, as stated by Saudi officials. This measure aims to avert a recurrence of last year's Hajj stampede, which resulted from extreme heat and the influx of unregistered pilgrims. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has directed authorities to enhance visa regulations. According to the revised rules, the final day to apply for an Umrah visa this year is April 13, 2025. Furthermore, no new Umrah visas will be issued until after Hajj concludes. That's all for today. This was the CatchUp on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Chance Armstrong and Dr. Jennifer Koziol to discuss a paper published in the AABP peer-reviewed journal The Bovine Practitioner. The journal is available open-access and the target audience is practicing veterinarians. Veterinarians performing bull breeding soundness exams are often asked when they can vaccinate bulls, and much of the available research focuses on type and timing of vaccination on females. The objective of this study was to determine if and how multivalent vaccines (modified-live and killed) affect spermatogenesis in bulls, measured by the percentage of normal sperm morphology and progressively motile sperm over a complete spermatogenesis cycle in bulls.  Our guests walk through the results of the study which demonstrated no detrimental effect associated with the use of multivalent modified-live or killed viral vaccines on the sperm morphology of mature bulls over a 61-day period. This suggests that vaccination of mature bulls following a routine bull BSE or at the time of turnout could be performed with limited risk. Our guests emphasize the importance of the veterinarian performing a full BSE 30-60 days before the breeding season starts. Armstrong re-iterates the Society for Theriogenology (SFT) standards for the appropriate evaluation of bulls for breeding soundness. Koziol and Armstrong are the authors of the SFT Manual for Bull BSEs and you can find information at this link. We also review how stress, nutrition and lameness also affect bull fertility and the importance of the veterinarian performing this complete evaluation to identify satisfactory breeders for cow herds. Finally, we discuss the new AABP Bull Breeding Soundness Examination Position Statement (find it at this link). This statement was developed by the AABP Reproduction Committee which ultimately states that this procedure is the practice of veterinary medicine and requires the expertise and knowledge of the veterinarian to perform. Our guests reiterate that this position statement is advocacy for the practicing veterinarian by AABP. If you are interested in reproduction, Armstrong and Koziol encourage you to join the committee by going to this link to email the committee chair. The email should include your name, veterinary school, grad year and your interest in the committee.  Assessing bull breeding soundness exam parameters following vaccination with modified-live or killed vaccine. 20/03/25 - Fairness in the supply chain, biosecurity measures to prevent a livestock epidemic

Farming Today

There've been cases of foot and mouth disease in Germany, Hungary and Romania this spring. How would we fare if it crossed the Channel? We're talking about biosecurity all this week, how to prevent disease, like FMD, from getting into the country and how to stop it spreading if it does. Livestock farmers have to follow strict rules when they move their animals. They also have to record all movements to ensure each individual cow or sheep can be traced in the event of an outbreak of a contagious disease. Cattle passports were introduced in 1998 after the BSE crisis and since 2010 all sheep have to be electronically tagged, a response to the major foot and mouth outbreak in 2001. We visit a south Cumbrian auction to hear about biosecurity measures and to see what farmers make of them. And James Wood, Professor of veterinary epidemiology at Cambridge University, tells us that in order to prevent the spread of disease, biosecurity measures are just part of the story. A group of cross party MPs has told the Government that farmers are way down the pecking order compared to the big supermarkets and food processors, and often feel powerless to challenge questionable behaviour by them. Yesterday in Parliament Alistair Carmichael, Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland and also Chair of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, introduced what's called a ten minute rule bill; the ‘Food Supply Chain Fairness Bill' aims to give farmers a more level playing field. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
