This is Nelson John, let's get started. The Indian government has unveiled a 3 billion dollar incentives plan to stimulate the creation of electronics brands and enhance private research & development spending in the sector. The initiative is aimed at attracting investments and generating business worth over 15 billion dollars. The goal is to shift from merely assembling devices, which leaves most profits with foreign firms, to manufacturing core components domestically and owning patents for commercially sold devices. Historically, local brands such as Onida, Karbonn, Lava, and Micromax have struggled against international competition due to a lack of innovation. Shouvik Das explains how investing in R&D could revitalise Indian consumer electronics brands by fostering homegrown innovation and enabling them to compete globally. Aditya Birla Group and Adani Group, which were initially interested in acquiring Akzo Nobel NV's Indian paint operations, did not finalize their discussions, leading to a shift in potential bidders. Now, Indigo and JSW are negotiating – p otentially with private equity investors such as Warburg Pincus, TPG, Carlyle, and CVC – for a bid valued between 2.1 and 2.5 billion dollars. If completed, it could be the largest in India's paint industry, in which Akzo Nobel, which owns brands such as Dulux and Sikkens, holds a 5-6% market share. The decorative business, comprising two-thirds of Akzo Nobel's valuation, is a key attraction, Anirudh Laskar and Sneha Shah report. Pidilite Industries has proposed a share swap deal, while others suggest an all-cash transaction.JSW Group, Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners and Waaree Energies have placed their binding offers for Enel Group's renewable venture in India, eyeing a deal that may value the company's equity between 350 and 400 million dollars. Tack on the debt and we're talking of a total enterprise value north of 500 to 550 million dollars. The assets in play include 760 megawatts of wind and solar installations that are already up and running, plus a promising pipeline of projects that could add another 2 gigawatts. Enel Green Power India has been on the block since last year, and with these bids in, a deal could be wrapped up by the end of the fiscal year, insiders told Sneha Shah. The Election Commission of India looks set to retain its power to postpone assembly polls, even as India shifts towards a 'one nation, one election' system. This power is enshrined in the proposed Constitutional amendment introduced in the Lok Sabha, Manas Pimplakhare reports. The amendment aims for simultaneous elections across all levels of government but allows the ECI to seek deferrals from the President under special circumstances, a change from the current rules, under which the governor decides. The move to synchronize elections is aimed at improving financial efficiencies and reducing policy paralysis. However, if the Lok Sabha or state assemblies are dissolved prematurely, the incoming government will serve only the remainder of the term, maintaining a fixed election cycle every five years. Critics doubt the bill will pass soon, as the current government lacks the majority needed to push the amendment through.The Hindi version of Allu Arjun's Pushpa: The Rule-Part 2 has been a blockbuster hit, crossing the 500 crore rupee mark and giving single-screen cinemas in north India a much-needed boost. However, cinema owners are worried. After the Pushpa 2 wave, there's no big commercial hit in sight for a while, and sustaining their businesses looks tough. They are pinning their hopes on Salman Khan's Sikandar, which is set to release on the Eid weekend in March. Cinema owners Lata Jha spoke to called 2024 one of the worst years for these businesses, especially those in small towns. Themes such as nationalism aren't pulling in crowds like they were before, and movies that resonate with the common man, such as Pushpa 2, are rare. With Bollywood not churning out many mass-market hits, and the popularity of OTT platforms growing, the future looks challenging for single screens.

During a recent Indian Premier League match, West Indian bowler Obed McCoy celebrated taking a wicket by coolly swiping his chin with the back of his hand. McCoy's imitation of actor Allu Arjun's gesture was a reminder of the phenomenal run of 'Pushpa: The Rise' at the box office since its release four months ago. It was also a reminder of the fact that South Indian cinema has perfected the art of making pan-India movies, which appeal to both a larger domestic audience and foreign viewers. And, the results are showing where they matter the most, in terms of money earned. And Salman Khan too acknowledged it. He said on Monday that it is the heroism in South films that is drawing audiences to theatres, which is lacking in Hindi movies today. In 2019, Bollywood's share in domestic box-office revenues was higher than that of South Indian films. The numbers stood at Rs 5,200 crore for Bollywood versus Rs 4,000 crore for South Indian films. Meanwhile, Hollywood's share stood at Rs 1,500 crore. Things, however, have changed. An EY-FICCI report has revealed that South Indian films dominated domestic box-office revenues for calendar year 2021 at 2,400 crore rupees. Bollywood was a distant second at 800 crore rupees and Hollywood third at 500 crore rupees.   Till February this year, Telugu cinema was reportedly doing better business at the box-office than any regional language cinema. According to Ormax Box Office Report 2020 and 2021, which had been shared exclusively with Business Standard back in February, Telugu cinema's share in box-office revenues had risen to 29 per cent -- higher than Hindi's 27 per cent and Tamil's 17 per cent share.   Now, the Covid-19 pandemic definitely had a role to play here, but there are other reasons too. So, what are the reasons behind South Indian cinema's success? Within a week-and-a-half of its release, the Hindi-dubbed version of KGF2 has already hit the 300-crore-rupees collections mark.  The time taken to reach that milestone was amongst the shortest for a regional film, even when compared to RRR and Pushpa. Put simply, the southern film industry is getting savvier at creating content and marketing with each new release. Inox Chief Programming Officer Rajender Singh Jyala gave Business Standard the example of Yash, the Kannada actor who features in KGF2. He travelled to different parts of India to promote his film. He did not simply restrict himself to the south. Moreover, Yash also engaged with bloggers and YouTubers to build up hype. According to Shringar Films Chairman Shyam Shroff, the southern industry has understood what a Covid-exhausted audience wants. As they come out from under many of the restrictions imposed by Covid-19, people are seeking big-ticket and action-packed films. And, the southern industry has understood this need, with all of its hit films being based on this formula. The combination of big stars, big directors, drama and high-octane action has caught the fancy of the people. EY-FICCI report says that South Indian movies will continue to do better business than Bollywood films in 2022 because of their content clicking with audiences. All of this comes on the back of the fact that more big-ticket regional films are awaiting release in multiple languages across markets. But, there may be an elephant in the room. The dearth of big-ticket Hindi-language theatrical releases over the past two years due to the pandemic. There is another factor to consider. Experts have also pointed Business Standard towards fatigue with Bollywood stars and scripts as one of the possible reasons behind the new preference for South Indian films. Keeping both these factors in mind, what is the future likely to look like for the Indian box-office?   According to Karan Taurani, SVP, Elara Capital, 18 to 20 Hindi films expected to collect over Rs 100 crore are lined up in CY22 and FY23. The recent big announcement in Tamil cinema is the collaboration of director Nelson (Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, yet to release Beast with Vijay) with Rajinikanth. Since the time Rajinikanth collaborated twice with Pa. Ranjith and once with Karthik Subbaraj, there have always been calls for the biggest stars - meaning male actors who guarantee huge weekend openings at box office - to work with young, promising filmmakers making a different kind of cinema, themselves a coterie that came into being around 2008 in Tamil cinema. The list of filmmakers has only grown since then and it's been a great decade. From calls for Kamal Haasan at his height of stardom and experimentation to work with some of them to Rajini working with them and Vijay collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Ajith with H. Vinoth (and we've had more than a decade of Dhanush-Vetrimaaran), fans believe this is a treat. Currently we have upcoming films like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram with Kamal Haasan, Vijay's Beast with Nelson, Vetrimaaran's Vaadivaasal with Suriya and Pa Ranjith's film with Vikram to name a few.
