In this episode, we are discussing Christa Carmen's meta Gothic novel The Daughters of Block Island with special guest Crystal O'Leary-Davidson. Crystal O'Leary-Davidson, writing as C. O. Davidson has published fiction in PseudoPod, Cemetery Gates, and in anthologies, most recently Hard to Find: An Anthology of New Southern Gothic. Her story, “The Mark,” in Vastarien, was recognized by editor Ellen Datlow in her anthology of The Best of Horror of the Year, Vol. 15 as one of the works of “notable dark fiction in 2022.” An English professor at Middle Georgia State University, she teaches classes in the Gothic, the Weird, and slasher horror films, and she co-edited a book of critical essays, Monsters of Film, Fiction, and Fable. Currently she is writing on the American mall in teen horror. There's no way around it: this one is just utterly horrifying.Creepy dolls: checkCreepier other toys: checkCreepiest pro-rape-culture plot: CHECKAROONEYAnd that's not even getting into the monsters Raggedy Ann and Andy meet along the way…Christa's summary was: "Raggedy Ann and Andy have to rescue ..someone... a horse maybe? A camel? And go on an extremely trippy and downright terrifying adventure to do so, journeying into some sort of cave in the process. And there are songs. Scary songs. And maybe Raggedy Ann and Andy are real dolls first and then get transformed into cartoons. Maybe raggedy Ann has to rescue Raggedy Andy WHILE RIDING a horse slash camel."This is more or less correct, though definitely missing a ton of what makes this one utterly terrifying. Christa also revealed to us that she actually sang one of the songs for this with her sister for a talent show as a child! Can you imagine?

A camel? And go on an extremely trippy and downright terrifying adventure to do so, journeying into some sort of cave in the process. And there are songs. Scary songs. And maybe Raggedy Ann and Andy are real dolls first and then get transformed into cartoons. Maybe raggedy Ann has to rescue Raggedy Andy WHILE RIDING a horse slash camel.This is more or less correct, though definitely missing a ton of what makes this one utterly terrifying. Christa also revealed to us that she actually sang one of the songs for this with her sister for a talent show as a child! She’s promised us a video to prove it… We’ll update you when we see it!
