Upset stomach? Feeling liverish? Is something obstructing you from your normal functions? It might be a microscopic Nazi U-boat exploring your nether regions. How will you survive? Listen to find out! This Hun in My Gland, episode 125 of This Gun in My Hand, was forcefully expelled from the lips of Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Sisyphus, Eat Your Heart Out, available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. What folk remedy settles an upset stomach? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Doktor Goren's surname is taken from a minor character from the Springbok Radio drama Vale of Darkness, written by Ron Evans. I can't find info about when it was originally broadcast, but you can listen to the series from the Internet Archive or other sources on the web.https://archive.org/details/vale-of-darkness-19xx-xx-xx-26/Vale_of_Darkness_19xx-xx-xx_01.mp32. For the purposes of crossover with Melinda's stories about fairy munchkins, hamquatches, reptilibugs and the pets of our extended family, let's assume Fritz is actually my sister-in-law's dog playing the trombone. He's not a Nazi, just playing a part.3. When I was searching for a “sad trombone” on freesound dot org, I found 91 sound trombone samples stretched and modified by user PhonosUPF. The weird dramatic sound near the end of the episode is actually two of those trombone sounds combined.Credits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.Sound Effect Title: Sad Trombone.wav by Benboncan License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/s/73581/ Sound Effect Title: descent.wav by DguilLicense: Creative Commons Sampling+ https://freesound.org/s/85212/ Eatmore Meats commercial jingle by Allied Radio Artists.License: Public Domainhttps://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/commercials/allied-radio-artists-radio-jingles/eatmore-meat-products-195x-xx-xxSound Effect Title: 60Hz_Tube_Radio_Hum.wavLicense: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/people/hetanoyokozuki/sounds/541812/Sound Effect Title: G45-18-Submarine Motor Stop.wav by craigsmithLicense: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/438720/ Sound Effect Title: R18-31-Old Car Ahooga Horn.wav by craigsmithLicense: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/480002/ Sound Effect Title: Pouring Soup in a Metal Pan - Quick,Short,Gross by HitrisonLicense: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0https://freesound.org/s/251410/Sound Effect Title: trombone melody 3 by PhonosUPF License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/501272/Sound Effect Title: trombone blow by PhonosUPF License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/491015/ Sound Effect Title: Charlie Brown Style Teacher by crashoverride6 License: Public Domainhttps://freesound.org/s/146933/ The image accompanying this episode is a collage including details from Detective Fiction Weekly, February 12, 1938 (public domain painting by V. The deeply wise and playful somatic coach, host of the Radio Somonaut Podcast, choreographer and mama Whitney Dawn Pyles is here today to deepen our understanding of these bodies and how we can put them in places, spaces and positions to bring forward our highest healing and expression of Self. I met Whitney at a retreat we did at the top of the year, noticed her instantly (you'll hear about that!) and she provided us with a *tranformative* dance experience in a Yurt that we go into in-depth here!Whitney deeply understands the body and what it needs, she talks so gorgeously about her process with hers and teaches us so much about the need for compassion and intuitive movement in our lives, and she gives us tangible tools to use in the teeny tiny moments we have free in our day to widen our capacity and deepen our relationship with safety. This is a long one, because we get into dance, and her process of developing her "Inner Child Dance Party" that absolutely unlocked something in me, that was one of the most powerful and joyful healing experiences I've ever had. She goes into the details of this process, and you can absolutely steal some of these moves and do them in your living room. And also! In March, she is doing "Free Movement Mondays" virtually so you can get a low-stakes taste of her goodness and the general, life-changing, power of making movement a part of your life. AT OUR AGE: Kick butt WOMEN AUTHORS I am always thrilled when I find women who are bucking the system in their 60's and older. I feel this way because two women, Rosalind Severin McClean and Patt O'Neil are very different writers.  Yet they are women of a certain age in their 60's and seventies.  They have chosen the literary paths to share tales, poetry, idea.  In turn they show the world that us seniors still have a lot to offer. Ms. McClean has four titles of note: OCEANS of THOUGHTS Book one, Two and Three. Her latest publicatio, Book Four, is a charming and adventurous children's book: The Little Pianist.  The illustrations are colorful, eye-catching and will keep the attention of toddlers to young readers. Perfect holiday gift and the family can help read along to the young children . At first glance, one would think that Patt O'Neil's genre is Westerns.  Not so. She has a natural talent for story telling. Taking us to places as varied as Venice and Cornwall, readers get a flavor of intrigues and mystery. Her two recent works are collections of short stories: TWO SIDES of the SAME COIN: In-between stories of SHERLOCK HOLMES and John WATSON.  Two Sides of the Same Coin: In-between stories of Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson: O'Neil, P. A.: 9798859789276: Amazon.com: Books https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJLLK862 TALES OF THE SOUTHWEST is set in an epic genre from the 1880's to present day. Readers will taste the difference between water starved deserts, steep canyons unforgiving heat and as Patt O'Neil told me, people share the traits of moving through challenges, issues and problems until they all resolve in their best manner.  Such is the storyteller Patt O'Neil taking us into the depths of imagination, strife and history Tales of the Southwest - Kindle edition by Green, John Franklin, O'Neil, P.A., Pyles, James, Balcom, Gabriella, Crowley, Jay, Hartshorn, Edward C.. She was burned at six months old with second and third degree scald burns on her neck and chest. Alexi was abandoned by her parents shortly after the incident. She stayed in an orphanage until the age of two when she was adopted by a single parent mother who brought her back to the states. Alexi doesn't have any memories of her burns, other than what was told. She received extensive burn care from the ages of three to her teens. Due to the lack of immediate care, Alexi did not have the typical burn treatment like skin grafts, expanders, or spending time in a hyperbaric chamber. She had steroidal injections, pressure garments, stitching, and lasers. Today, Alexi is a licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) and certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC) with a speciality in DBT therapy modality and trauma informed care. She has worked in many mental health settings including residential, IOP/PHP, hospital, and low acuity outpatient. She currently works for Kaiser Permanente as a psychiatric social worker focusing on their high acuity cases by connecting them to higher levels of care. True confession time. I have, on occasion, found myself getting comfy with a rote response to the world's -isms (capitalism, racism, ableism) and villainous influences (patriarchy and white supremacy). "I know" these ills deeply affect me, personally and professionally. "I know" what my responsibility is in challenging those forces and creating an equitable world.  “I know” is a sign that I've grown too accustomed to my own answers. You know? Hurrah for Loretta Pyles, Ph.D.! Her writing forced a hard reboot of my "I know" attitude, flipping what had become automatic over to active and embodied. Loretta advocates for continual self-inquiry as critical to professional growth. She's dedicated her career to helping folks resuscitate the connections they've been conditioned to ignore: heart-mind, community, and nature. GUEST BIO Loretta Pyles, Ph.D., is Professor at the School of Social Welfare, University at Albany, SUNY. Her work centers on environmental disasters, racial/economic/gender justice, integrative healing, and human rewilding. She is the author of Progressive Community Organizing: Transformative Practice in a Globalizing World, 3rd ed. and Healing Justice: Holistic Self-Care for Change Makers. When she's not teaching or working on her new book on rewilding, she can be found playing outside or camping in her Volkswagen van. Let's be friends! Survivors of domestic violence often lack the resources to secure legal representation in either or both civil and criminal courts. And navigating the civil and criminal justice systems can be overwhelming for survivors. What's more, offenders in criminal domestic violence cases are entitled to attorney representation while their victims are not. To address the shortcomings of systems that do not adequately address the needs of survivors, organizations like the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project have stepped up to offer no-cost legal assistance that provides a holistic approach to representation. In doing so, survivors receive more than just attorney representation, they also receive advocacy, referrals to domestic violence services and help with child custody matters. We talk with attorney Jenny Brody for an understanding of what survivors need in these cases and how they can access appropriate resources. Ms. Brody also explains the importance of domestic violence training for law enforcement, attorneys and judges and how that training can improve outcomes for survivors.Jenny Brody has practiced family law in Washington, DC for more than ten years.  As the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, from 2008 to 2016, Ms. Brody provided legal assistance to hundreds of domestic violence survivors in Civil Protection Order cases, as well as in divorce, custody and child support matters.  As a member of the DC Superior Court Counsel for Child Abuse and Neglect Panel, Ms. Brody represented children as a court-appointed Guardian ad litem and also represented adoptive parents in adoption petitions.  Ms. Brody has devoted substantial time to improving the court system, as a participant in the DC Superior Court Domestic Relations and Domestic Violence Implementation Committees.  She also played a role in promulgating Guardian ad litem Practice Standards, through the Council for Court Excellence and in DC Superior Court. Ms. Brody is a recognized expert in domestic violence and family law issues, presenting numerous training programs in these areas for lawyers, judges, social workers, medical professionals and domestic violence advocates. Prior to practicing family law, Ms. Brody worked in private practice, at Rogovin, Huge & Schiller and at Powers, Pyles & Sutter.  She also served as an attorney at the United States Department of Justice, Civil Appellate Staff.  She clerked for the Hon. 358: Justice + Mindfulness In Social Work Education - With Dr. Loretta Pyles

Therapy Chat

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2022 63:48

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C revisits a previous interview from 2018 with Dr. Loretta Pyles. In this discussion you'll hear Loretta and Laura speaking about the process of social work education. To the listener - please keep in mind that this episode originally aired 4 years ago, many aspects of the educational process for social workers are critiqued in this conversation and there are many ways that change is being demanded and slowly implemented now. Loretta's approach is still not the norm in social work education. Loretta came to mind-body healing practices in 1999, after leaving a difficult long-term relationship and becoming burnt out from her social services and social change work. She found herself anxious, grief-ridden, and disconnected from her body, mind and spirit. Over the years, she has committed herself to a journey toward wholeness, presence, and compassion. The realizations that she later found in meditation and yoga deepened her ability to understand the ways in which oppression and undigested experiences rest in the mind-body continuum.  To learn more about these parts of herself and to experience life more fully, she practices a range of modalities including mindfulness, lovingkindness, breath work, physical poses, devotional mantra, group support, and self-inquiry. Loretta's sensibility about transformative social change was formed during her time working in a women's collective at a community-based domestic violence program in Lawrence, Kansas.  She continues to be inspired by the insights of collective and consensus building that come from feminist and other social movements, as well as conscious communication practices. She works with public and non-profit organizations to promote healing justice and offers workshops which support social workers and activists to embody mindful practice and self-care through trauma-informed and anti-oppression lenses. Loretta received her B.A. in philosophy and sociology from Baker University, an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Kansas. Formerly on the faculty at Tulane University School of Social Work in New Orleans, Loretta is Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the State University of New York at Albany.  She was Director of UAlbany's Community and Public Service Program from 2008-2012. The National Science Foundation has funded her research on human capabilities, community participation, and disaster recovery.  Loretta's social change and healing justice work has taken her across the globe including to Haiti, Mongolia, and Indonesia.
