PowerCast episode originally released May 2, 2017. In the three and a half years we’ve been doing this show, we’ve noticed that when people really find their best “fit” they start to excel. Powerlifters, weightlifters, CrossFitters, even and maybe especially entrepreneurs. After being involved in plenty of other sports and activities, our guests this week, Chyna Cho and Freddy Camacho, both found their “fit” when they tried CrossFit for the first time. They’ve both made multiple trips to the games, and in this year’s CrossFit Open, Chyna placed first among the individual women competitors in the Northern California region, and Freddy placed 7th among men ages 50-54…all while working full time as a cop. They also found that their lives fit very well together. We recorded this show during the first week of the Crossfit open season. For those that don’t know, the open is the series of 5 weekly workouts that qualify athletes to compete at Regionals. We talk about how they prepare to compete, how they balance gym ownership (and Freddy’s job) with training, how they met and eventually got married, and look back on that time when Chyna, who is now one of the fittest women in the world, was fat. You can find Chyna @chynacho and Freddy @freddycamacho65, and them both at CrossFit of Fremont: crossfitoffremont.typepad.com/blog/ Mark Bell and Jim McDonald host. @thejimmcd PowerCast theme and opening music bed by Aaron Moore. Doug Chapman was the 13th CrossFit affiliate. At his peak, he had 400 members at HyperFit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Though that number has declined in recent years, he's best known for his online programming for athletes such as Julie Foucher. Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Lindsey Valenzuela, Jennifer Smith, Nick Urankar, Neil Maddox, Chyna Cho, Jacob Heppner—they're all coached remotely by Doug. But his gym doesn't focus on competition. "If you focus on competitive CrossFit, you're going to ruin your business," he said. At the 1:09 mark, Nancy arrives. She's a retired lawyer and law professor, and she has a lot to say about training seniors with CrossFit. Doug steps aside for a few minutes and lets me talk to Nancy instead. As Doug moves more toward personal training and small group training (instead of teaching classes,) he talks about what makes a great trainer vs. a great coach and why many coaches should do more PT to improve their class coaching.
