Healthcare as we know it (especially in the U.S.) is mostly sickcare. Instead of working with us to keep us healthy, it treats us when we're on the verge of disease or are outright unwell. There's a growing movement to change that approach, which would be especially beneficial for menopausal women, who are at a time of their lives when the risk for many diseases can begin to rise. This week, we sat down with Julie Foucher, MD, who provides precision, personalized medicine with Wild Health to talk about the potential benefits of this type of healthcare for women in and beyond the menopause transition. This far-reaching conversation also includes her thoughts on fasting, inflammation, stress, mindset, and much more.Dr. Julie Foucher is a former four-time CrossFit Games athlete and family physician practicing precision medicine. She launched the Pursuing Health podcast back in 2015 while transitioning from CrossFit competition to being a full-time medical trainee. “I think everything happens for a reason, and we all have our unique path,” explains Dr. Julie Foucher, Physician with Wild Health and Former Crossfit Games Athlete. Always passionate about sports, Dr. Julie quickly fell in love with Crossfit while pursuing her medical degree. Understanding the correlation between fitness and well-being, Dr. Julie now practices precision medicine, helping others optimize their health. At Wild Health clinic, Dr. Julie tries to factor in all the data about a person before creating a plan. Since every body is so distinct, it's safe to say that different treatments work for different people. By factoring in each individual's overall health results, Dr. Julie and her colleagues can personalize a plan that works for each person. The main focus is to find an optimal lifestyle that supports each client's needs, rather than find a broad solution that only works for a few. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to wellness. Julie Foucher interview Fitness with Friends interview Lazer Dukic story
Julie has planted her flag on the fitness industry over the last 13 in some impressive, and broad ways After starting CrossFit in 2009, she quickly became a household name.. if your household was filled with Crossfitters.. Julie went on to compete in the CrossFit games 4 times. Across her four Games appearances, she has never finished outside the top 5. This incredible display was trumped by the fact that she was also traveling weekends as a member of the CrossFit seminar staff, AND attending medical school. Her last games appearance was in 2014, as she was committed to completing her residency and knew the stress that would come along. During this time she was continuing to travel for seminars, and she started the posting health podcast When CrossFit health formed, Julie was on the team who put MDs through the CF, level one seminar. She worked as a Liaison between the Fitness community and her physician peers. She currently practices family medicine, and is working to create long lasting health through fitness by spearheading CrossFit's Precision Care, an initiative that connects to doctors who help create a plan for long term health. We talk a lot about how Julie handled the stress of completing at a high level while working toward her MD, and her passion and vision for the future with CrossFit health. This episode is simply dripping with stories about how Chris has helped train the minds of some of CrossFit's greatest athletes. Mat Fraser, Rich Froning, Julie Foucher, Sara Sigmundsdottir, Kara Webb, Jason Hopper and many more feature in today's show. Today on the Limitless Athlete Podcast, you'll be listening to a conversation between aerobic coach to the biggest names in CrossFit, Chris Hinshaw, and myself. Amongst many other pearls of wisdom, Chris discusses the Sticking Point - that moment in every workout when you are in the most discomfort and are most likely to quit. It's these moments, both in workouts and in wider life, where you have the greatest opportunity. If you listen to one part of you, you panic, or you slow down, or you quit. If you listen to the other, probably quieter voice, you'll confront an inner demon and add proof to the story you need to hear to fulfill your potential. Because of this, we have to predict when we'll feel at our most uncomfortable, and prepare our minds for that moment. The better prepared you are, the more likely you are to come out on top. Alongside this, we also discuss... How Sara Sigmundsdottirs socks tell a story about mindset and learning The pros and cons of fear for competitors Why Chris made Mat Fraser write down every single workout How anxiety ruins endurance And far, far more.
On this episode of Health Gig, we speak with Dr. Julie Foucher, one of CrossFit's most notable and accomplished athletes. “The model of medicine where you base treatment of patients on statistics and epidemiology- what works for most people- we felt like we could do better as a society and as a group of physicians, and that's what took us down the route of creating Wild Health and focusing on precision medicine.” - Dr. Matthew Dawson, Wild Health CEO Can human performance be optimized by tailoring medical care to each patient's unique genetic makeup? Matt Dawson, MD and Mike Mallin, MD are the co-founders of Wild Health, a healthcare clinic using a genomics-based personalized medicine approach. Dr. Dawson has been a life-long athlete focused on optimizing performance. He received scholarships to play two sports in college even with self-professed "minimal talent" because of his voracious reading and implementation of any fitness or nutritional techniques that would give him an edge. He continued that obsession into medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and as a physician he has won numerous national awards for education, innovation, and leadership. Dr. Mallin has been in medical practice for 10 years, but obsessed with health, physical performance, and longevity his entire life. He attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and currently practices in Bend, Oregon. Dr. Mallin is board certified in emergency medicine and has completed a fellowship in point-of-care ultrasound. Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin met during their Emergency Medicine residency in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they bonded over their life-long passion for optimizing performance. Throughout their residency, they continuously self-experimented with nutrition, fitness, and recovery techniques to give themselves a competitive edge. Together they have gone on to grow several businesses, create apps, and author two textbooks. Most recently they founded Wild Health where they use a medical approach rooted in the lessons they learned during their time self-experimenting as residents. Wild Health utilizes a team of medical professionals to look at an individuals unique genetics, lab results, microbiome, and lifestyle factors in order to craft a precision treatment plan that fits the patient's health, fitness, and longevity goals. I recently had the opportunity to appear on Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin's Wild Health podcast, and I was excited to catch up with them at their home base in Lexington, Kentucky to have them as guests on Pursuing Health. We talked about how they became interested in genomics and personalized medicine, how using an objective Health Score can motivate patients to make lifestyle changes, and the processes they're implementing to make precision treatment plans the future of medicine. In this episode we discuss: Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin's backgrounds in health and fitness, and why they decided to go into medicine How Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin met and some of the adventures they shared during residency The nutrition and biohacking they experimented with as they went through their medical training How Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin came to recognize that genomics were integral to practicing medicine What personalized medicine/genomics-based medicine means What the patient process looks like Using an objective Health Score to help motivate patients and give them a way to track progress How Wild Health uses health coaches to be more hands-on with their patients The Wild Health Fellowship The tipping point that allowed them to go all-in with Wild Health, and what their vision for the future looks like Three things Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin do on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on their health One thing they struggle to implement that could have a big impact on their health What a healthy life looks like to Dr. Dawson and Dr. Mallin You can follow Wild Health on their website, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Bridging the Gap Between the Hospital and the CrossFit Affiliate. This is an interview that ICE Faculty Member, Dustin Jones, had with Dr. Julie Foucher, MD, of the Pursuing Health, and Michele Mootz of CrossFit Health. This episode was published on Dustin's GEROS Health podcast as well as Julie's Pursuing Health Podcast. The show notes below are courtesy of the Pursuing Health Podcast team. Enjoy! --- “We are trying to reach the populations that would otherwise never consider walking into a CrossFit gym. That was goal #1 was, when we first put this out to people, if you're the least likely person to go to a CrossFit gym, we want you. And it was followed pretty closely after that with, we will meet you wherever you're at. And, got a pretty good response just from that. We have targeted two primary populations. One we call special populations, and that covers everything from the severely overweight to chronic disease: diabetes, COPD, you name it, we've got it. And, that was our primary target was a special populations class, and then reaching seniors, and the people who didn't have exposure to any kind of physical activity, let alone CrossFit, and teaching them some of the skills that would be necessary to keep them living independently.” – Michele Mootz When it comes to helping seniors and other “unlikely exercisers” become active and functionally fit for a lifetime of health, Dustin Jones and Michele Mootz are leading the charge. As a home health physical therapist, Dustin Jones works to keep older adults resilient and independent at home. He is also the founder of Geros Health and the Geros Health podcast, where he connects thousands of clinicians to share information and education about caring for older adults. Michele Mootz is a true CrossFit original, getting her start in Santa Cruz back in 2004. An experienced physical therapist, she fell in love with CrossFit methodologies and ultimately left her formal work as a physical therapist to become a full-time coach. Michelle has worked on the CrossFit Seminar Staff member for 10 years, currently serving as a Flowmaster. Most recently she has taken over the CrossFit Heath program at CrossFit HQ where she works with older adults as well as those struggling with obesity and chronic disease in an effort to help them regain their health and independence. Michele, Dustin and I met up at a recent CFMDL1 seminar to share a discussion on how we can bridge the gap from the hospital to the affiliate. In this episode, we discuss the considerations that go along with working with these special populations, how affiliate owners can get start their own senior and special populations programs, and how healthcare providers can get involved with their local affiliates. In this episode we discuss: The stereotypes surrounding CrossFit, and the initiative CrossFit HQ is undertaking to reach populations who would never consider trying CrossFit, including obese populations, those with chronic disease, and seniors How a box owner or a dedicated coach can create an inviting environment for those who need CrossFit the most so they feel welcomed The criteria CrossFit HQ uses in allowing those interested to join their CrossFit Health program Scheduling and programming considerations for special populations What primary care physicians should look for in an affiliate in order to feel comfortable referring patients How healthcare providers can get involved with their local affiliates The Derelict Doctors Club or “DDC” The trickle-down theory: why the MDL1 is not open to all healthcare providers How HQ is working towards a directory of doctors who CrossFit The reasoning behind CrossFit HQ's decision to track quality of life over other health data markers Michelle's action steps for box owners and coaches who would like to get started helping special populations Julie's action steps for medical providers who would like to consider using functional movement to help their patients Dustin's thoughts on why functional movement is so important for rehabilitation patients You can follow Dustin and Geros Health on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and via his podcast. In Episode 005 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing we share in an engaging conversation with world class Cross-Fit athlete and recent medical school graduate Julie Foucher-Urcuyo. As you will hear in our discussion, I first discovered Julie as part of her inspiring podcast: Pursuing Health and more specifically after her episode with our mutual friend and the mastermind behind the Evolution of Medicine and the Functional Forum: James Maskell. Between the two of us, we share tremendous passions for lifestyle medicine, fitness and utilizing a functional/ancestral approach to restoring health and maintaining wellness. We additionally are both about to embark on new journeys as first year family medicine residents. To learn more about functional medicine, maintaining wellness and utilizing an ancestral approach to restoring health, you can access our Ebook using this link. http://www.amedicinalmind.com/resources-for-health.html Before I lay out the specific details for today's show, I want to share a little bit more about Julie and her amazing life story. Julie is a four-time CrossFit Games athlete and finished on the CrossFit Games podium twice (2nd in 2012 and 3rd in 2014) both during her time in medical school and has never finished outside the top 5. Julie also has a growing interest in Functional Medicine, having completed her medical school training at the Cleveland Clinic and is about to begin her residency training with the Cleveland Clinic's Fairview Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. Her passion lies in combining what she has learned through all of these modalities to inspire and empower others to live a lifestyle that supports optimal health. She additionally hosts the previously mentioned podcast Pursuing Health, where she shares inspiring stories of individuals from all walks of life. During our discussion, besides reminiscing and reflecting about our own medical school journeys we dig into some really important questions facing medical professionals, medical trainees and our nation as a whole. In the podcast you will hear: Julie's fascinating background as medical student and Cross-Fit athlete, balancing grueling training with the rigors of medical school How Cross-Fit and exercise in general can be used and scaled for both the experienced athlete and novice beginner Julie's approach for addressing health concerns through a multifactorial program including diet, stress management and of course, exercise A thoughtful discussion into the concept of exercise vs. movement, how one can grow through traumatic life events including major injuries and the importance of engaging in the process versus simply being motivated by a perceived outcome. And lastly, Julie shares her latest projects and her intentions for holding a space designed to heal and nourish. Did you know Cross-Fit is actually the ideal place to be vulnerable, to connect and to grow? Enjoy this powerful conversation from two young professionals seeking to change the way medicine is practiced and what the “practice” of medicine even means. Stay up to date with Julie on her website, www.juliefoucher.com, her Instagram, @juliefoucher, Twitter @Julie_Foucher, or Facebook, JulieFoucherCF, and her podcast Pursuing Health with Julie Foucher.
