The Party Girls crew digs into the first Kamala Harris vs. Donald Trump presidential debate. Our favorite/least favorite things each candidate said, Abdul from the Taliban, the dog eating thing, etc. It's dominating the news so we might as well talk about it. We also cover the protests and looting that erupted in Washington, D.C. in response to the police killing of Justin Robinson, a 26-year-old black man who had been rendered unconscious by a car accident when the cops approached his vehicle, guns drawn. Josh, Dustin, and Raul are joined by friend of the pod Kelly Rowe. They start by talking about the recent commitment to Duke of Khaman Maluach, a 7'2" center out of Africa in the class of 2024. They discuss what he'll bring to an already loaded team next season. Then they recap Duke's 79-64 road win over NC State. Topics include: Duke's composure and resilience after NC State started the game 9-0 The contributions of the bench, and especially the recent play of Sean Stewart Offensive rebounding The steady guard play Duke's strategy of single coverage on DJ Burns The pivotal 10-1 run in the second half that allowed Duke to pull away for good Next they turn their attention to the main event, Duke's matchup with UNC on Saturday. They talk about various scenarios where Duke could win the ACC regular season title with a win. Then they debate keys to a Duke victory. Will Duke be able to keep UNC's role players in check? Can they limit points off of turnovers and compete on the glass? Then they each give their predictions for the outcome of the game. Lastly, they reminisce about their favorite Senior Night memories before rambling for another 10 minutes about various topics (Coach Scheyer's first two seasons, Caleb Foster's injury, Justin Robinson's practice battles with Javin DeLaurier, etc, etc.) You can find Kelly Rowe at https://twitter.com/KellyRowe910. Bo and the crew talk about players returning to Ole Miss and Mississippi State, whether or not people care about the Heisman winner not being in the CFP, and how it has been one year since the tragic passing of former Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach live from the Bank Plus Studio. The guys talk about the key play makers returning to Mississippi State and Ole Miss including Trey Harris returning to Oxford and Justin Robinson staying with the Bulldogs. Would you sell your dog for $200 grand? With the playoffs coming up, Bo is rooting for Michigan but thinks it could go either way. New Orleans Saints and LSU Insider Mike Detillier joins the show on the Farm Bureau Guest Line talking the Pac 12, College Football Playoffs, the NFL Draft, and the NFC. Mike thinks that Michigan is certainly still in the conversation for the title, even being in the Pack 12. He says that Pack 12 football was not boring this year and that the only reasons coaches in the conference get fired is for being bad or being boring. Bo asks Mike how he thinks Micheal Penix Jr. stacks up and Mike gives his top five QBs for the draft with Caleb Williams #1, Jayden Daniels #2, Drake May #3, Penix #4, and Bo Nix #5. The guys talk Texas and whether or not Arch Manning will sit another year behind Quinn Ewers and Mike says he will just like Eli Manning before taking over late as a freshman. Mike does not think Texas and Oklahoma are ready for the brute physicality of the SEC, but still likes Texas in a close game over Washington due to the potential turned production on the defensive side. Bo asks with the 49ers being #1, who is #2 in the NFC and Mike thinks it is 50/50 Eagles or Cowboys. He also thinks it was Greenbay's defense that lost last nights game by letting the Cowboys rush for over 200 yards. Bo asks him if Brian Kelly can take the LSU tigers to playoffs next year after losing Jayden Daniels, and Mike says it will depend on if he can make the defense strong again. Bo wonders if they are waiting until after signing day to fire their defensive coordinator. Mike agrees and says there is no shortage of cash to throw around in Death Valley to hire a new one. We're back with Episode 560 to recap Duke's win over LaSalle! The Blue Devils took out LaSalle 95-66 to move to 4-1 on the season, and Donald and Jason are here to recap the good and bad from the game. There were some great headlines, so they begin there, recapping some of the best that were sent in by others. Then, they get to the wealth of good things that happened in this game from Tyrese Proctor to Sean Stewart and the team defense. After the break, we deal with the things to improve from this game as the team wasn't perfect on the evening. Limiting the scoring droughts and stretches of sloppy play are at the top of the concern list. We end by discussing Justin Robinson's appearance on The Brotherhood Podcast and taking a look at some of the big early season tournament results that hit our radar. Make sure you're following us! Bo and the crew talk about acceptable first date spots, MSU playing Auburn this weekend and the bad coaching transitions for Mississippi State in the past years in the third hour of the show live in the BankPlus Studio. The guys look at a list of first date locations that women don't approve of and talk about why the bar is the best place to sit on a first date. Mississippi State insider Steve Robertson joins the show on the Farm Bureau guest line talking about MSU heading into the Auburn game live in the BankPlus Studio. Steve looks at how the Bulldogs can beat Auburn and thinks that they need to force turnovers in order to get a win on the road. Steve talks about how the defense looked different against Arkansas and he thinks there was a change in either play calling or game planning. Steve talks about how wide receiver Justin Robinson is getting healthier each week and how he helped outweigh a poor special teams showing from Mississippi State. Bo asks Steve who could be the third component of a successful offense and he thinks that Tulu Griffin needs to get the right touches in the right situations. In the SEC Insider Hit, Bo and the crew talk about the bad transitions between head coaches for Mississippi State and how Houston Nutt didn't get a job after Ole Miss live in the BankPlus Studio. Bo talks about how Arkansas hasn't been consistently good since Houston Nutt was with the Razorbacks and the reason he didn't get a another head coaching job following his time at Ole Miss. Bo looks at how some schools like Tennessee have taken themselves out of the spotlight by cycling in and out of coaches and having no consistency. The guys look at how the trend used to be hiring former assistants of Nick Saban and the instances where that didn't work for schools. The guys announce this week's Bank Plus Player of the Week and name a talented running back that had a career game. Out of Bounds is sponsored by BetterHelp. Bo and the crew talk about the worst places for a first date, Mississippi State's defense looking different and what Auburn's QB play will look like this weekend in the second hour of the show live in the BankPlus Studio. The guys look at a list of the worst places for a first date and talk about experiences listeners have had on a first date. Bo asks Steve who could be the third component of a successful offense and he thinks that Tulu Griffin needs to get the right touches in the right situations. Auburn insider Nathan King joins the show on the Farm Bureau guest line talking about the Tigers coming off a loss to Ole Miss and facing Mississippi State this weekend live in the BankPlus Studio. Nathan talks about how he was a little surprised with the QB rotation against Ole Miss and how Payton Thorne told the media that he isn't used to a system like that. Nathan talks about what the scoring could be like between Mississippi State and Auburn and says how the firs team to 17 points could seal a win for themselves. Nathan looks at the two defenses matching up and think it is possible for MSU to use their better offense to get a win on the road. Nathan thinks that if the Auburn offense played like they did against Ole Miss then they will lose no matter how good their defense plays. Nathan thinks the crowd will still be in this game like they were against Ole Miss and they haven't given up on coach Hugh Freeze just yet. Nathan talks about how running back Jarquez Hunter had his best game of the season against Ole Miss but Auburn still needs to use more running backs in order to split up the workload. Nathan isn't sure if head coach Hugh Freeze will continue to try to use the two QB system but he doesn't think Payton Thorne's comments will have any influence on his decision. Bo asks Nathan if Auburn should have gone after Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders and Nathan says that at the time Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne looked like the best option in the window. Greetings, loved ones! This is a reprise of one of our favorite episodes to prepare the folks for our upcoming course... SOUL FOOD GENIUS!! Enjoy! Brought to you from North Carolina... we're being petty about eating RAW GREENS. Many of our ancestors derived good eats and nutrition from green veggies, cooked low and slow. So, why are people now eating raw greens? They are probably disconnected from culture and sacred foods, they're just too busy, or they don't know that you cannot derive the nutrients from these foods without cooking. We're here to educate y'all. Please take time for yourself, and make this sacred food with us! Enjoy, eat, and COOK THOSE GREENS! Here are some resources of items we've discussed in this week's POD: Everyday Utopia by Kristen R. Dr. Dom Flemons comes off as older than his 40 years and I think it's because he seems like he is of a different era. This is thanks in part to his work in teaching and interpreting such old songs, such as his work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops that he was in alongside Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson. Originally from Phoenix, Dom is considered an expert player on the banjo, guitar, harmonica, jug, percussion, quills, fife and rhythm bones. When he was 18 years old, he saw Dave Van Ronk in concert and was completely taken with the way Van Ronk told the stories and history behind the old songs he was playing in concert. From then on, Dom also would give the background of the songs he performed in concert, leading to much intense research for songs and their backstories. On his latest album Traveling Wildfire, he began work on the album during the pandemic. He wanted “to figure out a way to give the listener a way to process the world around them without being too didactic.” The record is filled with Dom's most personal songs about his family, history and, of course, interpretations of very old songs. We talk about all this and his strong outfit game, which, I'm sure, no one is surprised by. Justin Robinson breaks down the ins and outs of the business of the NBA when it comes to trying to make a roster. After stints with the Washington Wizards, Milwaukee Bucks, and a few other NBA franchises, Robinson speaks on the mental toll it takes on a player trying to stick around in the league, dealing with the pressures of non-guaranteed contracts, constant trips to the G League, and getting thrown into the rotation at any given time. It's a life that doesn't come with any glamour, but if done correctly, can still earn you a very good amount of money. We get into the financials of an NBA player trying to make a roster, and why guys often will elect to stay in the G League as opposed to going overseas, and we also pick Justin's brain on his decision to forego the G League this season, to play in the Australian NBL, one fo the fastest rising league's in the world. We end it with some fashion talk of course, including the ideology behind putting together a tunnel fit, not trying to overspend while getting fly, and whether or not players should have stylists. This interview was without a doubt one of the best conversations we've had, so get comfy, and buckle up, because this one is a treat!
Justin Robinson of the Samlerhuset Group joins me to unpack an exciting new discovery–the Shroud of Turin's face on Byzantine coins?! If the Shroud is just a Medieval forgery this should be impossible. Justin is a rare coin historian working with the organization that strikes the Nobel Peace Prize medal, and his lifelong fascination with history, numismatics, and the Shroud have intersected in a profoundly intriguing way.
