Rich emphasizes the need for connection between athletes and the community. The CrossFit Games have lost some of their community feel since moving to Madison. Rich believes that the methodology of CrossFit is strong but needs better leadership. The Sanctional model provided more opportunities for athletes to compete. Rich suggests that the future of CrossFit depends on community involvement and leadership. There is a need for a collaborative approach to improve the CrossFit brand. The online qualifier for the CrossFit Games is not ideal. In-person qualifiers foster community involvement. Leadership in CrossFit requires a perfect scenario. The details of the 2025 CrossFit Games are still a little slim, but we know a few things.1. There will be a minimum of 30 men and women competing at the 2025 CrossFit Games.2. There are 9 Sanctional events, who will qualify 16 men and women to the Games. This implies that at least 14 athletes will qualify from the CrossFit Games from the new online Semifinal. Based on this information, who would have qualified for the Games in 2024 with the 2025 rules in place?

Feeroozeh Saghafi is a two-time CrossFit Games athlete who made her individual debut at the 2019 CrossFit Games. She's currently gearing up for her second appearance this August in Madison. She has also made multiple appearances on the Regional and Sanctional stage both as an individual and team athlete. Fee's rise to the elite level is remarkable. When she first started attending CrossFit classes, she had no aspirations of competing; she was looking to lose weight and surround herself with a healthy community. As she began consistently attending classes, she grew to love how strong and powerful she felt, and she was inspired by seeing other elite athletes. A competitive fire was born. For several years Fee trained alongside Scott Panchik at CrossFit Mentality, and recently she has moved to Florida to train with Brute Strength. One of the coolest parts of CrossFit is how young the sport is today. It's easy to forget the sport is only 15 years old (It can't even drive!) and we're still figuring things out. This includes how to react to crazy things you would never expect to happen on the competition floor. And how to score the athletes involved and effected by it fairly. In this episode, we talk about 10 wild scenarios that actually happened in elite CrossFit competitions and the impact of each. What if chip timers malfunction during an off-site, not-broadcasted event and most athletes placements are wrong? (At a Sanctional.) What if there is a clear programming/equipment snafu (like sleds unable to be pushed on the competition floor), that is not realized until after the first heat? What if a machine's screen does not work from the beginning after an athlete starts working? (Like an Assault Runner not counting any meters 30 seconds into running. At Regionals.) What if you cannot do a rope climb until your competitor finishes their reps because they mistakenly took your lane's rope? (At the CrossFit Games. On an event cutting to 75 athletes.) What if an athlete & judge disagree on score, by more than an entire round, and there's a language barrier, plus no broadcast footage to look through? (At the Games. For another event with major cuts.) What if essential equipment does not show up in time for a Regionals competition with workout movements that require the equipment? (Like benches not showing up due to a South America trucker's strike when there's bench press in the programming.) What if an athlete steps on a block of chalk—inches away from a bike fan—creating a mushroom cloud explosion of chalk dust covering half the floor? (At semifinals. We are asking for a friend.) What if a team in 11th place at the time cap for an event ultimately finishes 4th due to an irregular tiebreaker? (At semifinals.) What if it seems like there's a screen issue on a bike during a sprint event? (At the Games. Hint: the coach freaks out.) What if the pedals on a stationary bike are not functioning properly for an athlete during an event with only a single heat? (At the Games in a Masters division.) Chris stepped into the world of competitive CrossFit relatively recently; however not as an athlete, but rather a manager with years of experience in rugby and keen to enable athletes to qualify & complete as a team on the CrossFit Sanctional circuit. With lockdown easing in the U.K., I sat down with Chris to talk about the formation of Nasty x Saxons and his role as manager of a team that consisted of a number of U.K. athletes. As an relative but informed outsider, Chris shared his perceptions of the challenges with a sport that is still in its infancy; specifically highlighting the costs incurred to compete by the majority of highly dedicated athletes. Very topical, with even Eric Roza himself stating “There aren't enough athletes that can make a living with CrossFit right now” in the recent CrossFit Town Hall Meeting. In a break from our usual efforts to provide evergreen content based upon solid training principles, we instead theorize recklessly and rampantly about what the 2021 CrossFit Games season may look like. With the precarious financial state of many Sanctional events exacerbated by late event cancellations as well as likely extension of travel restrictions and potential second waves of COVID-19, we are likely to see continued disruption of the competition schedule. Will local competitions step in to fill that gap? Will athletes be willing to do events that involve multiple people in close quarters? And, what will the training implications be for athletes who likely won’t have any significant in person competitions on their calendars for awhile? And, how many Sanctionals will be able to run in 2021 – and how many will be put out of business due to 2020 event cancellations? [17:26] Will local competitions be running again anytime soon? [22:34] Will people be motivated to train without an event circled on their calendar to compete in? [27:53] What will the impacts of taking significant time off from competition be on people’s performance? Will this further the separation between elite athletes and everyone else? The delays and cancellations continue amid the coronavirus pandemic. Sean and Tommy update the latest changes to the Sanctional schedule. What do we actually mean when we talk about “peaking?” How should an athlete structure a peaking phase in their training? And, how do we get CrossFit athletes to be be able to do competitions when they’re not in top shape without getting hurt and without judging themselves harshly for their performance relative to others? Structuring a season for a CrossFit athlete has become a lot more complicated based upon the somewhat confusing structure of online qualifiers and Sanctional events, so figuring out a plan becomes all the more important. How should we structure an off-season – and what are the unique challenges of structuring a season in CrossFit compared to other strength and endurance sports? [16:44] How to detach your identity from your performance so that you can stick to a larger plan for your season – rather than getting caught up in the hype and comparison of every qualifier that you do. [25:18] How often should we touch on “sport specific training” throughout the season – even during a non-peaking phase? And, what is the role of “mental toughness” training in our sport?

What's up with the programming at the Sanctional events? Are events doing a good job of selecting and testing the athletes that are going to be moving on to the CrossFit Games? Should HQ step in and create specific standards surrounding how they want the testing to run? Now that we've seen a few of these Sanctionals - and Jon and I were at Wodapalooza in person soaking it all in and jostling for position to be able to see our athletes compete - it's time to break down some initial thoughts on how these things are going. On this weeks episode of the team soul podcast we touch on a bunch of different topics but our main focus dives deep on what's going on with Crossfit HQ and what they’re doing with Crossfit main site. Starting at the beginning of January all signs of the Crossfit games and the sport of fitness have been removed from Crossfit.com and gone are the Crossfit journal and the Crossfit podcast. The Crossfit games update studio has been transformed into grandpas living room and now the videos and articles are targeting the older generations. The workouts have even changed a bit. Less intensity, more focus on strict gymnastics work and conditioning. What's up with that? What do we think? Keep listening to find out! Before we get to it, here are a few reminders: Our competitive CrossFit program, team soul training is at the beginning stages of our open prep phase. The open is coming in 2 weeks. Are you ready? If not, Visit www.teamsoultraining.com to get signed up! Team Soul Barbell is split into two independent programs: Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. How will spots be backfilled? We also talk about our WZA predictions for the elite divisions and dive a bit into our upcoming training plan for the Open and Granite Games.
