In today's episode, I chat with Scott Panchik. Scott Panchik is a CrossFit Games legend but may be an even better coach. Stationed at CrossFit Mentality in Mentor, Ohio, he's not just about the reps but the love and commitment. He says, "I'm the fun gym-owner first, athlete second."
Scott and Jamie checked in today, talked to some coaches and athletes as they prepare to cover the Age Group Athletes tomorrow on their first day at the Games.
Feeroozeh Saghafi is a two-time CrossFit Games athlete who made her individual debut at the 2019 CrossFit Games. She's currently gearing up for her second appearance this August in Madison. She has also made multiple appearances on the Regional and Sanctional stage both as an individual and team athlete. Fee's rise to the elite level is remarkable. When she first started attending CrossFit classes, she had no aspirations of competing; she was looking to lose weight and surround herself with a healthy community. As she began consistently attending classes, she grew to love how strong and powerful she felt, and she was inspired by seeing other elite athletes. A competitive fire was born. For several years Fee trained alongside Scott Panchik at CrossFit Mentality, and recently she has moved to Florida to train with Brute Strength. Fee Saghafi has been trying to make her way back to the Games for a few years now, coming so close year after year. She made some big moves in the off-season, like joining Matt Torres and the Brute Strength Crew in Florida. That move paid dividends, as Fee books her return to Madison. She is also getting married the week after the games during a destination wedding in Mexico. What does it mean to her to have such a supportive partner. All this and so much more.Photos Courtesy of Roseyview Photography

Scott is a Crossfit games veteran who has competed in every year since 2012 and finished within the Top 10 all but twice and also finished in 4th, three different years. In the world of Crossfit Scott is a machine. A testament to the word consistency, he's a truly seasoned veteran who poured his all into the sport of fitness before retiring after the 2021 Crossfit Games. Panchik was awarded the Spirit of the Games award in 2021, which is awarded to one athlete each year who embody CrossFit's values during the most difficult of competitions those who exhibit the character, commitment, and camaraderie the sport seeks to cultivate in its training and competitions. Even though he's retired, he continues to pour his heart and soul into Crossfit and runs his affiliate gym called Crossfit Mentality. Towards the end of our conversation, Scott tells the story of how he came to faith, how he overcame his insecurities and intimidation of not knowing the Bible like he thought he should. It was such a vulnerable expression that I certainly can relate to. Hearing his testimony certainly helped me, and I hope it helps you as well. Scott is full of energy and known for wearing an ear to ear smile most of the time. He is such a fun dude, and I really enjoyed our conversation. He's an incredible man, husband, and father and it was an honor to host him on the show. DISCUSSION POINTS Scott reflects on his childhood He wasn't supposed to make it as a baby - he was very premature The journey as a walk on college football player Scott tells the story about how he met his wife From reconstructive knee surgeries to teaching high school to the Crossfit games Quitting his job as a teacher/coach to open his Crossfit gym Passion - finding what fulfills you The price of pursuing your dreams How to make significant, long-term growth in your life Scott reflects on his baby daughter Best parenting advice from Scott Scott's testimony in coming to faith Scott's last ride at the Crossfit Games with a new perspective LINKS IG: @scottpanchik

Fee Saghafi is one of the most recent guest athletes to attend Power Monkey Camp. Fee is a CrossFit Games athlete who trains alongside Scott Panchik out of CrossFit Mentality. Outside of Fees impressive athleticism, she is just an infectiously positive person, as we got to learn first hand a few weeks ago at camp. Not having a typically athletic background growing up, it is interesting to hear Fee's approach to training foundational movements as well as honing her mental game, which she attributes much of the credit to her CrossFit Games mentor Scott Panchik. Fee was a blast to have at camp, and we think you will find the same to be true on this episode, lots of laughs and good times. Enjoy! In this episode, Games athletes Margaux Alvarez and Adrian Conway join host Chase Ingraham to preview the competition that is set to take place Thursday, Jan. 13, to Sunday, Jan. 16. "This field is absolutely stacked. I have never had a harder time picking a top three — for both the men and women — than I have now, because this is just riddled with multiple-year Games athletes, elite individuals from top to bottom.” —Chase IngrahamThings are heating up in Miami, Florida, as a stacked field of athletes gets fired up to compete at Wodapalooza (WZA), an offseason, CrossFit-licensed event. This year marks the competition's 10th anniversary. What began as a one-day event has grown into a four-day “Functional Fitness Festival,” with over 2,300 athletes competing across 20+ different divisions, including teen, masters, and adaptive divisions. After reminiscing about their own experiences competing, spectating, and soaking up the ambiance at WZA, Alvarez, Conway, and Ingraham discuss their podium picks for the men's and women's divisions as well as the three-person elite team divisions. The trio unanimously predicts second-fittest man on Earth Pat Vellner and West Coast Classic winner Bethany Shadburne will rise to the top of the leaderboard. On the team side, Mayfem — with teammates Andrea Nisler, Taylor Williamson, and Haley Adams — is the front runner for the women, while The Boys — Noah Ohlsen, Chandler Smith, and Travis Mayer — and Mayhem In Paradise — Rich Froning, Angelo Diciccio, and Luke Parker — are heavy favorites to win for the men. Ingraham also reveals that Scott Panchik, who announced his retirement days before the 2021 NOBULL CrossFit Games, has accepted an invitation to compete at the event. Don't miss the action! “You're just a foot away from success. And it's just being resilient and fighting for what you want. It doesn't matter how many times you're knocked down. It's just standing up.”Our guests this week are Saxon and Spencer Panchik, two of the fittest men on the planet today. For most, living up to an older sibling's success is a deterrent when it comes to choosing a sport or similar endeavor. The opposite is true for Spencer and Saxon. It's actually become a major factor that drives them in their pursuit to crossfit excellence. The experience gained by their older brother, Scott Panchik, one of the greatest crossfit athletes ever, has become the blueprint they leverage as they navigate their own journey in the sport. As twins, they have a built-in accountability partner when it comes to training at a high level everyday and growing a successful gym business. They credit a lot of their success to their ability to do three things really well: staying in control of their emotions, mastering proper execution and knowing when to take risks. Throughout our conversation, you'll benefit from hearing how they use these skills to maintain a steady rise in the crossfit global rankings year-after-year. Make sure to listen ‘till the very end when they share a powerful story of how their fall from a 75-foot cliff when they were 12 years old led to where they are today!Timestamped Show Notes:(3:12) Getting to the Crossfit Games…(7:49) Focusing on positive outcomes and the law of attraction…(10:04) Managing expectations…(13:56) Training, working, and strategizing together…(18:02) “In training, we're pushing ourselves to fail. Scott is one of the most well known Games athletes in CrossFit, and if you know him personally, you know how kind and positive he is. He is now retired and focusing his energy on being a new father. We hope you enjoy this episode...we sure did. IG: https://www.instagram.com/scottpanchik/?hl=en
Scott Panchik's CrossFit Games career began in 2012 when he took 4th place as a rookie. After that, he went on to appear at the Games eight more times as an individual. Panchik never stood on the podium, but did finish inside the top 6 seven times in his career. After announcing that this would be his las season, Panchik took 11th at the Games despite a nagging knee injury. “When you get to that elite level, it comes down to who wants it more. And the people that stand on the podium, the people that earn their Games bids in my eyes, are the people that wanted it the most. And yeah. I want it. But I'm going to do my damn best to earn it as well. And now that I'm taking things a lot more personally than before, I'm excited. I'm fired up.”Today's guest is Fee Saghafi, 2x CrossFit Games competitor.Fee has so much energy to share and we're so excited for you to get some of that energy from our conversation with her today. We loved chatting with Fee about everything from her journey into CrossFit, how tight knit the CrossFit community is and what being part of this community means to her. To say this was an inspirational conversation is an understatement! Fee was courageous and kind enough to share the story behind one of the most challenging moments a professional athlete can face - training for a big competition only to have an unexpected obstacle derail your performance. She openly talks about her experience with getting sick going into the Mid-Atlantic Competition just a few weeks ago and how hard it was for her to get through it and still finish 7th place. We learn from her that adverse situations can actually be the thing you need to activate the warrior within you and find another level of competitiveness to do more than you previously thought possible. Without a doubt this conversation is going to get you fired up no matter what sport you do. I hope Julie doesn't mind that I call her a legend. Julie has had 4 finishes of 5th or better in the Crossfit Games, including a 2nd and a 3rd. Julie retired from competition but still is very active in the sport, with teaching seminars, and serving as an inspiration to so many Crossfit athletes. Julie is doing her residency and will one day have a practice with her husband. I love her attitude in using Crossfit, and healthy principals to be the bedrock of a medical practice. Its attacking health on the proactive basis, instead of just treating symptoms. I hope you enjoy the chat we had. I wish her all the success in the world. She spoke of Greg Glassman, the sports founder and his principles and also of Northeast Ohios own Scott Panchik, who continues to be one of the best on the planet in Crossfit. She talked about getting the mindset that she could stand out in the sport, after, as she said, there was a time she just went to a regular gym and aimlessly went through a non descriptive workout. Only when she discovered a crossfit gym, did she get the focus to become, potentially something great. Included in the interview is her praise for Crossfit Games veteran Scott Panchik, who owns Crossfit Mentality in Mentor, Ohio and has been a great advisor, and advocate for Fee. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-telich/message

If you have been living under a rock, Scott Panchik is a very familiar face in the CrossFit community, qualifying for every CrossFit Games since 2012, and finishing this past year just under ten points from this year’s podium. He is the epitome of consistency, dedication and professionalism. But where does that come from? Our awesome conversation centers around the themes of family, building strong relationships, community and sacrifice. Scott will be the first to tell you that much of his success can be attributed to his wife, his parents, and younger brothers. What role do they play and how have they helped Scott develop and evolved are covered in our conversation. He is a tremendously driven individual outside of CrossFit as well, and gives much of himself as a teacher to grow and build his community at CrossFit Mentality. We dive into the process of starting a business, what the community means to him, at the same time remaining a competitive athlete. Of course we discuss what it takes to make the games multiple times over, breaking down Scott’s training approach and mentality (pun intended). Reflecting back and looking forward to next year and what the future holds for Scott, his family, and CrossFit Mentality.
