We are BACK after a hiatus and with a really exciting new type of episode! Our biggest mission at MINT is to help moms and trainers become more educated and aware. For the longest time, it's been very tough to find actual studies done on pregnant women as it relates to exercise. However, that's changing and today we talk about a recent study featured by Emily Beers in a Morning Chalk Up article. The study was done on a small group of pregnant women and their babies, testing how high intensity interval training and moderate intensity training effect health markers of the baby. Women in menopause get a lot of nutrition and fitness advice. Some of it is sound. Some less so. Quite a bit of it is downright predatory. That is why the best nutrition and fitness advice for menopausal women is often not about grams of protein or hours of exercise, but rather a hard look at our own attitudes and beliefs about how we eat (or don't eat) and move our bodies. What narratives form our nutrition and fitness foundations? Are they even true? This week we dig deep into those narratives–and how to change them–with Meredith Root, co-founder of Tactic Functional Nutrition and Tactic Functional Fitness, both of which are grounded in empathy and behavioral change.Meredith Root has a B.S. in Biological Engineering and 6 years experience in biopharmacetutical process development. She is an active member of the Canadian and American Society for Nutrition and contributing writer for The Morning Chalk Up. She has been a nutrition coach since 2015 and along with her partner, Alex Parker, founded Tactic Functional Nutrition in 2018. Tactic now employees a team of 10 coaches and works with people from all over the globe on health and habits. Together, Meredith and Alex run Tactic's Instagram page which has garnered over 210k followers as well as their podcast, Afternoon Snack, which allows them to amplify their messaging even further. Fundamentally, the Tactic methodology is one that emphasizes consistency with basic nutrition and fitness principles that compound over time; communicated in a way that inspires trust, confidence, and self-determination. Their new business, Tactic Functional Fitness aims to bring uncommonly good fitness to common people. The CrossFit Games season structure has changed again, and the qualification stage of the semi-finals is set to be more structured moving into next season. Every year since the sport stopped doing regionals, qualifying for the CrossFit Games has always looked a bit different every year. The changes moving forward look to centralise the programming back to CrossFit and some changes to the distribution and the availability of spots to the CrossFit Games. Overall this looks like it will create more standardisation in the sport, which for athletes and coaches is a good thing. This will give more clarity on how to train, prepare and approach competition. Give this week's episode a listen to hear more about the changes from Jon, our very own human Morning Chalk Up feed, and our thoughts and anecdotes over the last several years of consistent changes. For any sport to grow, it needs more eyeballs on it. It needs fans — both in attendance and watching the broadcast — to generate revenue and succeed financially. So, the fan experience and watchability of the action for spectators is a critical component in professionalizing the sport of CrossFit. Inspired by a Morning Chalk Up article, we examine this past year's CrossFit Games to discuss workouts that played well for the fans watching. And we brainstorm about ways to improve some of the workouts that were harder for fans to follow or understand what was happening in the race happening on the competition floor. Morning Chalk Up Article:Fan Perspective: Was the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games a Success? by Emily Beers* We think Boz did a fantastic job and will only improve as he gets more years under his belt.
Since the semi-finals, there has been much talk about PED use at the CrossFit Games. Many athletes were caught this year after the testing at semi-final events, and it has received a lot of attention from YouTubers, blogs like The Morning Chalk Up and finally, our very own podcast! If you're after hot takes and gossip, this topical episode has all of that, with Todd and I making wild guesses on questions like- "how many people were on PEDs in this year's season". When we look at PED use in CrossFit and those that are getting caught, it is evident that there are areas around the globe where this is happening more and that the culture around PED use in different regions of the world is different. As CrossFit grows and becomes more global, this is something that the sport will have to navigate more so. Check out and listen to this episode to hear our cynical views, hot takes and wild guesses on PED use in CrossFit. Preslie Hirsch is a staff writer and correspondent for Morning Chalk Up, the host of the top-rated Hey Preslie Podcast, an Olympic weightlifter, CrossFit coach and health enthusiast based in Austin, TX. In this episode, we talk about the value in sport beyond ‘winning' and how to enjoy sport regardless of your fitness level. Preslie shares her perspective on body image and the process of learning to love what the body is capable of doing. It is an appreciation for being strong and confident that will ultimately bring joy and satisfaction in sport participation. You can find more from Preslie on the Hey Preslie podcast and on the Morning Chalk Up. THE GRITTY DETAILS There is so much value in being involved in sport far beyond ‘winning.' You do not have to be the best in the world to do something you love. It is important that athletes find a coach and community that they vibe with and that promotes a positive environment. Be intentional with the media you consume. Social media can be a great avenue for connecting and learning. But it is also ok to choose who you consume content from. You do not have to embody feelings and emotions. Learning to separate thoughts from who they believe themselves to be. Shout out to the Morning Chalk Up for doing a series of articles featuring their female contributors about their experiences surrounding body image (Fighting the Stories in Our Heads: A Series on Body Image). We review each awesome write up and talk about how our own experiences relate. If you have ever felt too big, too small, not strong enough or even thought about comparing yourself to others then give this a listen. A common theme emerges that at some point we have all experienced some issues with our own body image and in many cases this has been initiated or at least exacerbated by others in our environment. We are all a work in progress! Happy listening!

Morning Chalk Up (@morningchalkup) is a daily newsletter for CrossFitters, founded in 2016 by Justin LoFranco. What started as an emailed aggregate of information has turned into a full sports journalism company that covers athletes, events, sponsors, and the full scope of the CrossFit Games season via articles, interviews, social media content and more. The Morning Chalk Up recently issued a correction regarding the article and podcast they published regarding E. coli in Lake Monona in Madison. Sean and Tommy discuss the move, where things went wrong and why CrossFit may have chosen to remain silent when it was published. The Open is officially over. What was good, what needs work and what can we expect moving forward? Plus, Facundo Etchecolatz from CrossFit Mayhem joins the show to talk about the teams in Argentina that have been disqualified from competition.
In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I caught up with Jack Farlow, who is making waves as a competitor in the sport of fitness. We talked about Jack's journey from the early days of finding fitness to his first CrossFit Games appearance as a teen in 2019. Jack talked about his training methods, nutrition, recovery, and mindset. We also chatted about how he is able to balance his training schedule and keep up with one of the most challenging and demanding undergraduate programs in the country. Growing up, Jack Farlow played all kinds of sports including lacrosse, football, soccer, and baseball but had a true passion for hockey. In 2015, he found the competitive side of CrossFit. Within a couple of years, his passion for the sport outgrew his love for hockey. Since then, he has competed globally including the CrossFit Games in 2019 where Jack took home a 6th place finish in the teen division. Jack is currently training to join the world's fittest and qualify for the CrossFit Games as an adult. Earlier this year, Jack was featured in the Morning Chalk Up as one of the Sports Young Guns to watch out for in the 2022 CrossFit Games season. Clearly his future as an athlete is very bright. You can find more about Jack Farlow on Instagram. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.
The Morning Chalk Up published an article on January 19th detailing alleged negligence on the part of former CrossFit Games director Dave Castro. That same night, we went live and detailed the inaccurate journalism done by the author Emily Beers and Justin Lofranco of Morning Chalk Up (even though it was claimed they waited so long to publish the article so they could gather the facts... oops!). Almost two months later, Morning Chalk Up has retracted the article and subsequent podcast.Partners:https://paperstreetcoffeeco.com/ - THE COFFEE I DRINK!https://www.barbelljobs.com/ - WORLD'S #1 JOB BOARD FOR THE CROSSFIT COMMUNITYhttps://www.zoeharcombe.com/register/... - 50% off first year with code "sevan22"https://thesevanpodcast.com/https://sogosnacks.com/ - SAVE15 coupon code - the snacks my kids eat - tell them Sevan sent you!

Today on the Limitless Athlete Podcast, you'll be listening to a conversation between founder of the Morning Chalk Up, Justin LoFranco AKA J-Lo, and myself. The biggest lesson I think the average person can learn from this is how Justin goes out of his way to expose himself to challenge, rather than insulating himself from difficulty. One certainty of life is that you are going to encounter challenge and strife. Your path through life will be littered with trials and obstacles. That's one of the guarantees of life, along with tax and death. This is especially evident in training, but also in our relationships, our careers, and every other area of life. Look around you, and you'll notice that difficulty is everywhere. You'll also notice how some people thrive under it, and others crumble. What's more, it's relative: what challenges you and I will be at two different levels. What prepares us for hardship is hardship itself. When you do difficult things, you get better at doing difficult things. What was once beyond you, is now within your capabilities. This is not because these tasks become any easier, it's because you prove to yourself that you are ever more capable. You and I should not be waiting for challenge to explode into our lives from the unknown, but should be biting off as much as we can chew at any given opportunity. The path to growth, and to a better life, runs through hardship, not around it. Alongside hardship, Justin and I also discuss How you become identified with being a CrossFitter Delaying gratification for the bigger reward in the long run Summiting the US' highest mountain Dealing with fear And the benefits of solitude
