Today on the Limitless Athlete Podcast, you'll be listening to a conversation between aerobic coach to the biggest names in CrossFit, Chris Hinshaw, and myself. Amongst many other pearls of wisdom, Chris discusses the Sticking Point - that moment in every workout when you are in the most discomfort and are most likely to quit. It's these moments, both in workouts and in wider life, where you have the greatest opportunity. If you listen to one part of you, you panic, or you slow down, or you quit. If you listen to the other, probably quieter voice, you'll confront an inner demon and add proof to the story you need to hear to fulfill your potential. Because of this, we have to predict when we'll feel at our most uncomfortable, and prepare our minds for that moment. The better prepared you are, the more likely you are to come out on top. Alongside this, we also discuss... How Sara Sigmundsdottirs socks tell a story about mindset and learning The pros and cons of fear for competitors Why Chris made Mat Fraser write down every single workout How anxiety ruins endurance And far, far more.

And, the difference between “can’t get into” vs “can’t get out of” range of motion problems. [26:11] How do you peel apart an assessment when someone has a range of motion in an unloaded situation (like reaching overhead with their arm) but struggles to achieve that position in a loaded situation (like hanging from a pull-up bar)? [32:14] “The functional continuum” – how to return to sport from an injury, correct dysfunctional movement patterns, and move well under high metabolic fatigue [39:31] How do you get buy-in from high-level athletes to take steps backward and work on basics? [48:31] “If you need someone to shout at you to do five more reps, you’re not going anywhere anyway.” [57:58] How do you structure an environment for competition amongst competitors? This is a cross-post from the Legion Strength & Conditioning podcast - where we get much more into the weeds with CrossFit coaching and competition. Figured this may be interesting to some of the folks here, so bringing this across the divide Phil Mansfield is a multi-disciplinary coach with a history competing and/or coaching in rugby, cycling, swimming, triathlon and more. In the CrossFit world, he is best known as the coach to multi-time CrossFit Games podium finisher Sara Sigmundsdottir. We got up early - well, early for me (Phil’s internal clock was still on Denmark time) - after Wodapalooza to have a quick chat before Phil did a postmortem on the competition with Sara. Anyone that has met Chris Hinshaw will probably confirm that he is intense, in a good way. He doesn't leave anything to chance. This is probably also the reason why he could compete and be successful as an ironman athlete and businessman. Many top athletes have now started to listen to Chris and his methodology since he started coaching Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Jason Khalipa, Rich Froning, Sara Sigmundsdottir, Tia-Claire Toomey, Katrin Davidsdottir and Mat Fraser. Meaning almost all top 10 athletes in the games had something to do with Chris. Was this just by accident? We don't think so. In this quite long episode we handle many many subjects and to be honest we had the feeling there was still left to talk about. Chris shares and gives a lot of his knowledge through many platforms and he did not hold back in this episode either. We talk about different ways to program smarter to be able to do more pull ups, handstand push ups, thrusters and much more. Chris also shares what was his initial spark to begin with triathlons and to start with Ironmans and we believe this has some great take-aways for parents and/or any kind of coach out there. Feel free to comment and give us feedback. Happy to hear what you have to say.
