There are certain critical moments that we, as leaders, have a chance to change our minds--to think differently in order to lead better. And when we do, the outcomes for those we lead are extraordinary. In this episode, our Founder and CEO Jenni Catron shares about some of the perspective shifts she's made to take her leadership to the next level. Highlights from Jenni's teaching:Sometimes, we need to think differently to lead better. There are perspective shifts critical to our success. When we shift our perspective & see things in a new way, growth occurs. When growth occurs, it's impossible to stay stagnant.Example perspective shifts:Climbing the leadership ladder was not about me, but those I was leading.I was ridiculously in charge of my own life & needed to take responsibility for my own growth instead of waiting for someone else to map out my path. I should quit waiting for someone else to step up & take charge & realize I'm the one who needs to make the hard call & do the right thing.Jenni often asks leaders: What if you're frustrated about that because you're the one whose supposed to do something about it?When we challenge our perspective, it leads to breakthrough moments that define our leadership.Study from Barna 82% of young people believe society is in a leadership crisis. 1/3 believe that what it takes to be an effective leader is changing. The leadership landscape is changing.Leaders need to have the emotional intelligence to lead yourself well, to navigate the critical moments of your organization, & have the ability to discern the emotional current of your team and the culture. It's possible and essential. Can you think up? Can you change your mind?Perspective Shift #1: Who you're becoming is more important than what you're doing.Do the right things at the right time.Identify the foundational elements of who we are as leaders, while identifying the areas we need to adapt and grow & change with our surroundings. What must NOT change? Your core purpose: personal mission, vision & values.Clarity of purpose is essential for longevity.Have you experienced a crisis of purpose moment? Is your leadership foundation set?Defining your personal mission, vision & values is imperative.Check out Jenni's book CLOUT: Discover and Unleash Your God-Given Influence for help determining your personal purpose & mission. Be open to God's prompting, whether you're asking something big of someone or you're the one being asked. In Jenni's case, she was the one being asked to do something she never would have considered, but because of current circumstances in her life she was able to say “Yes”. As a leader, you may need to make a big ask of someone who might say “No”, but you don't know that for sure. So ask anyway. 2. Relational leadership is integral for successful leadership. When Jenni transitioned from corporate leadership to church leadership, she learned an important lesson: See the people you are leading as people, not as a means to your end. 3. If you want to find better ways to engage your church, you have to be willing to listen to your church. There is no “one size fits all” approach to church. Each body of believers is different, which is highly influenced by the culture they find themselves in. You'll never know how to meet the needs of your church until you know what those needs are, and in order to attain this knowledge, you need to listen. Quotes From This Episode: “Our job is to be faithful to the prompting God might put on our heart. God's responsible for outcomes.” - Jenni Catron “Don't say ‘No' for them.” - Jenni Catron “It's remarkable how God is at work when we're just faithful and obedient.” - Jenni Catron “A lot of times we will try to manufacture things that feel successful as leaders.” - Jenni Catron “Our job isn't to make people happy, it's to help people become better.” - Jenni Catron “Sometimes we exchange that person being happy for us in this moment for actually what's best for that person and their growth and their development.” - Jenni Catron
She landed right in the middle of her childhood dream, to work in the music business. And, while the nine years spent in that industry were fun, exciting, and personally fulfilling, she recognized (over time) that the spiritual restlessness she felt was really a signal for her to move on and explore other venues and other opportunities. The question she kept asking herself - Is this the best gift I have to offer? Today’s guest loves “putting feet to vision”, leadership front-runner and author, Jenni Catron. Understand that your gifts are transferable; Reach out to mentors; Write a thank you note to everyone you've worked with; For your first few days, listen and learn (become a sponge). Three pieces of advice she would give to her 20 year old self Quit comparing yourself and trying to fit in; Rather than mimicking others, influence the world in the way you are wired; By embracing your uniqueness, the people around you get to enjoy the best of you.
