Ep. 279 Matthew Bates - What Does the Bible Really Say About Salvation?

Shifting Culture

Matthew Bates joins us today to work out salvation. What is it? What have we got wrong? In our contemporary moment, we find ourselves wrestling with a profound misunderstanding of the gospel - a narrative that has been truncated, individualized, and stripped of its royal, communal essence. The gospel is not merely a personal transaction about individual salvation, but a comprehensive royal announcement about Jesus the Christ. For too long, both Protestant and Catholic traditions have inadvertently narrowed the expansive biblical vision of salvation. We've reduced faith to mental assent or ritualistic practice, when in reality, faith is fundamentally about allegiance - a comprehensive, embodied loyalty to King Jesus that transforms not just individuals, but entire communities and, ultimately, all of creation. Matthew seeks to recover a more holistic understanding. We are saved not just from something, but for something: the full restoration of our image-bearing capacity, the renewal of God's glory in and through us. This isn't about personal spiritual escapism, but about participating in a cosmic restoration project. In our conversation today, we'll explore how reimagining salvation as allegiance can bridge denominational divides, challenge our narcissistic cultural assumptions, and invite us into a more profound understanding of discipleship. We're not just talking about theological abstractions, but about a transformative way of being in the world. Prepare to have your understanding of the gospel radically expanded. Matthew W. Bates is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. His books have won top honors from Christianity Today, Outreach Magazine, Jesus Creed, and Englewood Review. When he isn't hiking, baseballing, or chasing his seven children, he co-hosts the OnScript podcast. A Protestant by conviction, Bates holds a PhD in theology (New Testament) from the University of Notre Dame. His popular titles include Salvation by Allegiance Alone, Why the Gospel?, The Gospel Precisely, and The Birth of the Trinity. He lives with his family in Quincy, Illinois. As Christians, we have brothers and sisters not just in your church, or your country, but all around the world. Oftentimes it's hard for us to grasp that we are connected in the body of Christ with people from other countries. In this second episode on the Family of God, we're going to look at how we should relate as brothers and sisters in Christ to people we don't even know. It may be easy for us to appreciate how to relate to the person we see at church every week . . . but what about the fellow believer you disagree with on cable news? Or the person living out their faith in a whole other continent? In this episode host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Ed Stetzer, Dean of Talbot School of Theology, Editor-in-Chief of Outreach Magazine, and host of Ed Stetzer Live on Moody Radio. A conversation about pain, disappointment, and friendship with God with Faith Eury ChoWORSHIPING IN THE WILDERNESSIt wasn't until late in 2022 that one little story in David's narrative stuck out to me. I was going through my own wilderness season, and had been for about a year and a half when I read it.When King David was returning to the wilderness in 2 Samuel 15 on his way into exile from his son Absalom who had taken over his kingdom, he paused. He paused to let everyone who was traveling with him (over 600 men and their families to pass by him), while Abiathar the priest made sacrifices. Wow.Y'all. This is powerful. It shows us that we can keep worshiping, even when we are on the way into a wilderness season, and all of our options feel heavy and impossible to navigate.I don't know whether you are coming out of a wilderness season, feeling like you're on the way into the wilderness or somewhere in between, but the one thing we learn from David is that the wilderness does not dictate our ability to worship the Lord in everything. This week, we continue to reflect on some of the themes in Session Five of Selah: Worship Invites Resilience in the Wilderness.TODAY WE'RE REFLECTING ON JAMES 1:5-6 ESV:If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. All of these experiences have come together with his pastoral work to form a unique gift for helping churches and ministries build great teams by finding their key staff. Prior to executive search, William led growth and innovation in churches in North Carolina, Alabama, and Houston. During his time in Alabama, William had the chance to help rebuild and relocate an ailing congregation and lead them to new levels of growth. At 31, he was elected Senior Pastor for the First Presbyterian Church of Houston, a church of about 5000 adults and 1500 children strong. It is Houston's oldest congregation. William is regularly invited to speak across the country in both church services and as a resource to churches and conferences on leadership. He is a regular contributor to several major publications including Forbes where he covers topics about having a strong faith and building a business, Fortune, and Outreach Magazine. He has also been published through Fast Company, Entrepreneur, and Inc. His book "Next: Pastoral Succession That Works" on effective pastoral leadership and succession was released through Baker Books in September 2014. His most recent book, "Search: The Pastoral Search Committee Handbook," the practical guide to the pastor search process, was released through B&H Publishing in June 2016.

How important it is to think and pray through the invitation, just like the rest of the message. That public proclamation (preaching) is not the only tool to make disciples. The art of engaging people and equipping them to serve. The digital footprint is now the first impression for many. Technology in church is a great avenue to involve young generations. The shift to hybrid worship (in-person and online) brings accountability in what we say and a stark reminder that many more people are watching than what you know. US is not #3 behind India and China in the number of people who profess to NOT be a Christian, Craig Etheridge in his book, BOLD. Outreach Magazine says that remote learning “threatens the $670 billion college-industrial complex. It also threatens the traditional approaches to discipleship.” Fight for relationship and the right to speak truth into another's life, not just to assert your authority.

She has also served on the advisory board of the Institute for Bible reading, ministered to international students with Cru in New York City, and engaged in three global gatherings of the Lausanne Movement. Michelle earned a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, completed spiritual direction training at Boston College, and studied the life and times of Jesus at Jerusalem University College.  She has published four books and is a regular columnist with Outreach Magazine. Hey friend, It is difficult navigating the division of our world, and it can be especially confusing for our kids who see it everywhere. As we raise the next generation of Christ followers, we as parents need tools to equip our kids to be a part of the solution to the division we see all around us. In this week's episode I sat down with author, Michelle Sanchez to discuss the beauty of community, how God created community, and how we are all made in the image of God. Michelle reminds us about the importance of communicating with our kids and how it is in fact at the core of scripture. Jesus reached out to the outcasts, so must we; and He gave us the great commission to seek out all people across the world. On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, take time to listen to this encouraging conversation! You can connect with Michelle through Facebook, Instagram, and her website where you can buy God's Beloved Community or her other resources such as, Color-Courageous Discipleship.    FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *What was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s real dream? We remember his "I have a dream" speech but sometimes we forget he was a pastor and his real dream was a spiritual one, for all of us to love one another as a body of Christ.  *Our kids are experiencing broken community, and Michelle offers the solution to communicate with them about it. It all begins in Genesis, even with God Himself as the Trinity, Three in One, there was community--likewise, humans were built for community.  *Every culture has its strengths and weaknesses. One strength in the United States is our independence, but it also becomes a weakness because we lack a strong sense of community and understand its importance; other cultures may lack individual independence but succeed with community bonds.    REMEMBER: *Jesus reached out to the marginalized. "It's all about the heart." - Michelle.  *Reconciliation as disciples hasn't been at the forefront of priorities. *We are here to advance the Kingdom of God, all nations like a colorful tapestry.    SCRIPTURE:  Revelations 7 Matthew 28   Connect with Somer!  Stay connected to Somer and the Love Where You Are podcast through her Facebook & Instagram! His book Confident Faith was the winner of Outreach Magazine's apologetics book of the year. His smaller evangelistic book, The Reason Why Faith Makes Sense, is an update of a classic that touched millions of lives — recreated by Mark for a new generation. He also wrote The Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask (with Answers), which addresses the ten spiritual questions believers most want to avoid. Prior to that Mark collaborated with Strobel to produce The Unexpected Adventure, a story-based book designed to encourage Christians to seize everyday opportunities to talk about Jesus. Mark's published pieces have sold a total of some three million copies. Mark was the original evangelism director at Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago, and then served as Executive Vice President of the Willow Creek Association. He was also an editorial consultant and periodic guest for Lee Strobel's television show, Faith Under Fire. He and Strobel have been ministry partners for more than thirty years. After receiving an undergraduate degree in business, Mark earned an MA in Philosophy of Religion, graduating magna cum laude from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. In addition, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mark and Heidi live near Denver, Colorado, and are the parents of Emma Jean and Matthew, both of whom serve in ministry roles. JC Worley leads Go Church in South Atlanta. He and his wife, Kimberly, lead Go Church. Go Church was the host location for the first-ever Courageous Pastors Gathering, and— more relevantly to this talk— JC is taking a more proactive role with CourageousPastors.com.   From 2006 until 2013, JC was the youth pastor at Go Church, for his father-in-law. He left to plant a church in the Metro D.C., area, with his father-in-law's blessing. They launched— and led— the church for 4 years. His father-in-law approached him about retiring and taking over his home church at that point. After much prayer— and wise counsel— JC and his wife relocated BACK to Atlanta, transitioning the Maryland location into a satellite.   This year, at Easter, Go Church launched a 3rd campus in the Atlanta area. Just before the pandemic, Go Church was— under JC's leadership— one of Outreach Magazine's Top 100 / fastest-growing churches.   A former client himself, JC is a coach on the team. And, he'll begin hosting the Courageous Pastors podcast. His believes Courage to Lead provides two things: #1 = Quality. It's been tested over-and-over, and has a developed framework. So, there's consistency. #2 = Content. The system includes information which pastors can use and apply in their unique context— immediately. These two factors create a consistent experience for others… … and it provides an on-ramp to help others apply the content and receive incredible results.   Feel alone?  You don't need to-- join the tribe.   ______________   Schedule a Strategy Session at www.CourageousPastors.com/strategy Learn more about Go Church at https://www.mygochurch.com/ Follow JC on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jcworley/ Register for The Gathering videos at www.CourageousPastors.com/gathering
