Legacy
A performance psychologist on confidence, resilience, and the identity work that outlasts the medal

Legacy

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2026 27:48

Paul sits down with Dr. Jim Taylor — performance psychologist, former U.S. Ski Team competitor, and founder of Prime Mind for a conversation that traces a career built on a single insight. The mind is the final frontier, and almost none of us know how to work it. Jim's origin story is disarmingly honest. He was a good ski racer with a bad head, the kind coaches used to call a head case. One summer psychology course in high school changed the trajectory of his athletic career, and eventually his entire life. He walks Paul through what actually changed that season (not the strength, not the technique, the internal architecture) and why he decided somewhere around age nineteen that psychology hadn't been a choice so much as a calling. The heart of the conversation is the mental work Jim now teaches. Confidence isn't a skill, it's a muscle. Visualization isn't a nice-to-have — the primitive mind can't tell the difference between an imagined rep and a real one, and Jim used that mechanism to rewire his own belief system on the way to an international-level career. Resilience is fundamentally a perception problem. And the "good road / bad road" fork, he says, is often not a conscious choice at all — which is why most people stay on the bad road even when they know exactly where it ends. The episode's emotional center is the weight vest metaphor. Jim describes what happens when an athlete steps into competition carrying twenty pounds of expectation, identity, and self-worth on their shoulders. He walks through Alyssa Liu's Olympic story as an example of what the release actually looks like, opens up about his recent decision to walk away from a startup he'd invested two years into, and unveils the app-based extension of his practice Prime Mind that he built in the two-and-a-half months since he left. It closes on a legacy answer that quietly matches Paul's own help people see themselves before they know how to see themselves.   Timestamps 00:00 — Welcome and introduction 00:30 — The head case origin story 02:00 — The summer course that changed everything 03:30 — The breakthrough season on the U.S. Ski Team 05:00 — Middlebury, Psych 101, and the calling 06:30 — Purpose and passion as a fill-in-the-blank question 08:00 — Why startup building feels riskier than skiing 09:30 — Network, credibility, and the ski racing runway 11:00 — Performance psychology beyond sport 12:30 — Confidence, self-talk, and mental imagery 14:00 — The primitive mind and positive reps 15:30 — Rewiring belief through visualization 17:00 — Resilience as a mental muscle 18:30 — The good road and the bad road 20:00 — Post-medal letdown and identity loss 21:30 — Athlete to performer identity shift 23:00 — Alyssa Liu and the weight vest release 25:00 — Toxic sports cultures 26:00 — Walking away from a two-year startup 28:00 — Building Prime Mind solo in ten weeks 30:00 — The B2C and B2B model 31:30 — Favorite client stories and the mind as final frontier 33:00 — Legacy as long game 34:00 — Where to find Dr. Jim and Prime Mind Episode Resources Discover how Dr. Jim Taylor helps athletes, executives, performers, and high-achievers of every kind take the weight vest off and access the mental muscles that make peak performance sustainable — through one-on-one work, keynote and workshop content, and his new app Prime Mind: www.drjimtaylor.com Legacy Podcast: For more information about the Legacy Podcast and its co-hosts, visit https://businesslegacypodcast.com Leave a Review: If you enjoyed the episode, leave a review and rating on your preferred podcast platform. Today, I interview Riana Malia, who grew up through repeated family breakups, broken promises, and the belief that she had to earn love. The instability left her feeling unsettled, too much in some ways and not enough in others, while also teaching her to become deeply resourceful. Those early beliefs followed Riana through marriage, motherhood, financial hardship, betrayal, and relationships where she tried to manage outcomes and become who others needed her to be. Although she went to therapy, read the books, and talked about her experiences, the anger, sadness, and old story continued to shape her life. Her breakthrough came when she realized that repeatedly telling the same story was keeping her inside it. She learned to stand on her story instead, let go of the belief that she had to beg people to love her, and become the same person in every room. That shift helped her break the cycle of broken promises and create a different life.Today, Riana uses what she has learned to help women stop repeating the relationship patterns that no longer serve them. She helps them get clear about who they are, what they want, and the life and love they want to create.__________________Riana Malia is a Board-Certified Neurosomatic Practitioner, Identity Architect, and private authority for women who have built extraordinary lives and refuse to settle for ordinary love. Her methodology blends neurological rewiring, subconscious reprogramming, and nervous system recoding to address what therapy, retreats, and self-help have not been able to reach.Riana is the creator of the Clear to Create™ Method, which helps women clear old patterns, create aligned beliefs and habits, and claim a new identity. In this episode, Marsha explores the powerful connection between identity and personal transformation, emphasizing the truth that you cannot outperform the identity you currently hold about yourself. She dives into the gap that often exists between who people say they want to become and the version of themselves their subconscious mind still believes they are.Marsha unpacks how many individuals pursue new levels of success, visibility, leadership, or growth while unconsciously holding onto outdated beliefs, stories, and self-perceptions that no longer align with their future vision. She explains how this internal conflict can create resistance, self-sabotage, and emotional exhaustion, even when the right strategies and actions are in place.Throughout the episode, Marsha highlights the importance of identity work, emotional regulation, support, and repetition in creating lasting change. What if the reason your affirmations are not working has nothing to do with how hard you are trying, and everything to do with how your brain is wired? In this birthday special solo episode, I am pulling a teaching straight from inside the Creative Frequency to introduce you to one of the most powerful mindset tools I have ever used: askfirmations. These are not affirmations. They are curiosity-driven questions that hijack your Reticular Activating System and send your brain on a search for evidence, opportunities, and possibilities it was literally filtering out before.I am breaking down the real neuroscience behind why curiosity works better than forced belief, including how it activates dopamine, lowers nervous system resistance, and bypasses the identity blocks that keep you stuck. I also walk you through the full askfirmation practice so you can start using it today. This one is a gift, literally. Send us Fan MailIf you've been telling yourself you just need a little more clarity before you start, this will hit like a mirror. We're unpacking the real difference between women who build a million-dollar business and women who stay in “someday” mode, and it has nothing to do with talent, timing, or the algorithm. It comes down to micro habits you practice daily, especially when you don't feel ready. We walk through four principles that drive momentum in online business, content creation, and personal brand growth: discipline of clarity (clarity is chosen), speed to decision (progress is unpredictable but decisions are not), daily learning that actually changes behavior (less scrolling, more building), and audacity (the missing prerequisite to confidence). You'll hear practical frameworks like “action creates clarity,” the five-second rule to stop overthinking, and a simple input-to-output ratio that turns podcasts, YouTube, and courses into results. We also talk about real bottlenecks modern creators face such as starting an Instagram account, writing hooks, using SEO in captions, navigating AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude, and pricing offers at the level you're stepping into. If you've been stuck in analysis paralysis or hiding behind perfect plans, this is your push to make one bold move today. What's the decision you're making in the next five seconds?Work With MinnieI'm Minnie Courtney. No shortcuts. Just what actually works.Ready to talk - Explore Now

Dr. Marianne Pinkston is a board-certified family and functional medicine physician with nearly 30 years in solo practice, based in San Antonio, Texas. After personally overcoming rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, she transformed her practice and launched New Bloom, a personalized functional medicine platform focused on helping women reclaim their health, identity, and vitality. She is also the host of the Dr. P Better Life podcast, now in its fourth year. - New Bloom: mynubloom.com - Podcast: drpbetterlife.com - Instagram: @drmariannepinkston Key Takeaways: Chronic stress and adverse childhood events (ACEs) create a biological environment of inflammation that drives autoimmune disease, cancer, obesity, and metabolic disorders. Survival mode — the state of constantly being in fight-or-flight — is the root cause, not just a symptom, of most chronic disease. Identity is medicine. Changing your body requires changing the story you tell yourself about who you are and what you deserve. Emotional eating, people-pleasing, and overworking are survival mechanisms rooted in childhood experiences — not character flaws. Boundaries are not walls. They are a form of self-love that creates the biological conditions for healing. Dr. Pinkston lost 120 pounds over two years, reversed her diabetes and cancer, and is now an athlete at 57. Functional medicine addresses root causes — stress, identity, lifestyle, nutrition — rather than managing individual symptoms in isolation. Dr. Pinkston's Best Medicine: gratitude, paying it forward, and using lived experience to guide others. This episode brings my four-part series on the essential pillars of sustainable success to a close. We’re finishing with the most underestimated pillar of all… identity. You can have the energy, the strategy, and the mindset… but if your identity hasn’t caught up to the life or business you’re trying to build, you’ll keep hitting invisible ceilings. In this episode, I unpack why identity is the lens through which every business decision is made, from pricing and leadership to visibility, risk, and growth. I dive into the origin of how we unconsciously play small and why so many founders stumble as they scale. I also share the identity shifts that have made the biggest difference in my own journey. This is a conversation about shedding old stories, building a bigger internal container, and stepping into the version of you who can actually hold the success you’re working towards. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing all the right things but still can’t quite break through to the next level, this episode is for you. More often, it surfaces quietly through things like physical symptoms, emotional exhaustion, and a slow erosion of joy. This episode centers on how living out of alignment impacts the nervous system, the body, and long-term wellbeing, especially for high-functioning, purpose-driven people.A real world story illustrates how mental and emotional strain can accumulate beneath the surface, eventually manifesting as physical consequences that can no longer be ignored. The pattern is familiar: years of “shoulds,” pushing, and over-leveraging… followed by a moment when the body draws a hard line. This conversation is especially relevant for anyone interested in nervous system regulation, mind-body medicine, integrative health, or understanding how unresolved stress and trauma affect the body over time. Alignment isn't about perfection. It's about honesty, awareness, and choosing a path that supports both health and life. You'll Learn:[00:00] Introduction[04:52] The hidden cost of living by “shoulds” instead of what actually feels aligned[09:14] What happens when stress and misalignment start showing up in the body[12:01] The moment making money quietly replaces fulfillment without you noticing[17:08] What changes when you stop outsourcing your intuition to experts and templates[21:36] The slow erosion of confidence that comes from not trusting yourself[27:45] The role identity confusion plays in burnout, anxiety, and feeling stuck[34:12] What real self-honesty looks like before alignment can return[39:58] Why surface-level mindset work can't resolve deeper misalignment[46:41] The warning signs of unhealthy power dynamics with coaches or gurus[52:14] The skill of taking advice without giving away your authorityFind More From Dr. Stephanie Davis:Dr. Stephanie Davis | WebsiteQuantum Rx | InstagramQuantum Rx | Skool

Welcome to Follow Your Gut. Daily Anchors.I'm Juniper, and I'll be guiding you in this daily embodiment practice for grounding, expansion, and self-leadership.I have been on my own personal growth journey for a really long time. I've spent years learning and healing, expanding, unlearning, and rebuilding myself, and something I've really come to notice is that so many of the tools for growth today move incredibly fast. There is so much information, so many practices, so many insights coming at us all the time, and while so much of it is beautiful and so powerful, I've found it harder and harder to actually create the space to embody what I'm moving through.Personally, I have been craving an anchoring practice, something I can return to every day. And originally, this was something I was just going to record for myself as a voice note on my phone. But as I went to press record, I had this very clear, intuitive knowing that this isn't meant to be just mine. That it isn't just me feeling this way. As women, as mothers, and really as humans living in the world right now, our bodies were never designed for the pace we're moving at. We're processing more information, making more decisions, and holding more emotional weight than ever before, and without something steady to return to, it's easy to feel unanchored, even when we're doing all the right things.Welcome to Daily Anchors. This is designed to be a daily practice that you return to once a day for two weeks at a time. Each practice stays the same on purpose, because repetition is how the body learns safety, and safety is where real growth happens. When you come back to the same practice each day, you begin to notice how you're changing, even though the words don't. You begin to embody the work instead of just understanding it.This practice is for you if you are a mother awake in the middle of the night, holding your child and worrying about their health or development. It's for you if you're navigating your own health and feel overwhelmed by how much there is to know. It's for you if you're building something, becoming someone new, or standing at the edge of your next season and wanting a way to stay grounded as you grow. You can listen first thing in the morning before anyone else in your house is awake. You can come back to it in the middle of the day when you feel scattered. You can make it part of your bed time routine or in the middle of the night when you are awake wishing you could sleep. There is no right time. This is meant to fit into real life.At the end of each practice, I'll guide you through a few simple daily anchors.I'm dedicating every other Follow Your Gut Podcast episode to this practice, for you and for me. I'll be doing these right alongside you, and so will everyone on the ōNLē team. This is not about doing more. It's about creating space to actually embody the woman you're becoming. Thanks for listening! Episode 279: The Missing Piece in Manifestation | In today's episode, we're going deeper into the truth behind manifestation that most people overlook: worthiness. If your manifestations feel inconsistent, if you get close but can't hold it, or you're doing all the “right things” but nothing sticks: this is the piece you've been missing.Manifestation isn't just about mindset or visualization. It's about identity, and identity is built on what you believe you deserve. You don't manifest what you want; you manifest what you feel worthy of receiving. In this conversation, we explore why worthiness becomes the foundation of sustainable manifestation, how the nervous system impacts your ability to hold expansion, and the early experiences that shaped your sense of deserving. You'll learn how unworthiness quietly shows up in your money, relationships, and boundaries, and how to start reprogramming your inner world so you can finally align with what you've been calling in.If you're ready to move from “trying to manifest” into actually embodying the version of you who feels safe, deserving, and magnetic… this episode will change everything.✨ Want to go deeper? In today's episode, we're diving into Part 2 of the Signs You Need Identity Work series - and this one's all about one of the sneakiest blocks that holds so many entrepreneurs back: overthinking. You might tell yourself it's strategy or confusion, but most of the time, overthinking isn't about not knowing what to do; it's about not fully believing you're enough to do it. We're unpacking how perfectionism disguises itself as “being thorough,” why your brain overthinks to protect you, and what to do when you catch yourself spinning out on the smallest details (like your pricing, your launch plan, or your next post).I'll walk you through how to spot when overthinking is really an identity issue, how to interrupt that pattern in real time, and the mindset shift that will help you move with so much more ease, confidence, and speed in your business. Here's what you'll hear inside this episode:The connection between overthinking, perfectionism, and feeling “not enough”Why your brain uses overthinking as a false sense of controlHow to identify when fear (not strategy) is running the showA simple question to rewire your identity and take bold, aligned actionThe difference between knowing the strategy and trusting yourself to execute itIf this episode hits home (and you're ready to stop overthinking and actually start doing), join me for my free interactive workshop, “It Factor,” happening Thursday, November 20th at 12 PM ET.
